In the younger class of Scott County's enterprising, public-spirited and successful business men Henry H. Sindt is worthy of prominent mention. He has made his way in the world from humble circumstances to a position of prominence among his neighbors and associates by honest effort and force of character, and is a worthy citizen of a prosperous and intelligent community. He was born at Davenport, Iowa, October 9, 1850, the son of Thies and Abbe (Stoltenberg) Sindt, both of whom were natives of Germany. They immigrated to America in 1847, prior to their marriage, sailing on the same steamship, and were married in 1849. The mother died in 1871. The father is still living and is a prosperous and influential farmer of Blue Grass Township, Scott County. Henry had good educational advantages and after leaving the public schools pursued a course of study at Bryant & Stratton's Business College of Davenport. In 1873 he left Davenport, and going to the town of Wolcott opened a hotel, of which he has been the success ful and popular proprietor and manager ever since. He has interested himself in everything pertaining to the welfare of his town and community, has taken a leading part in the conduct of local public affairs and is universally respected and esteemed by his fellow-citizens.
He has been honored by them with numerous offices of trust, which be has filled with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of the public. For nine years he served as Township trustee; he was Township clerk six years, served the same length of time as County supervisor, and for seventeen years was constable of his Township.
In all the relations of life Mr. Sindt has demeaned himself as a conscientious and honorable business man, seeking in everything to do unto others as he would have others do unto him. He is a man of genial, sunny temperament, large hearted and hospitable, faithful to his friends and conspicuous for his good qualities of head and heart.
February 22, 1873, he married Miss Katharina Horst. Of four children born to them, three, August, Clara and Alma, are living. Laura died in 1876 at the age of eleven months.
