One of the enterprising and progressive men of Scott County, and one who is always willing to aid a laudable enterprise, is the gentleman whose name heads this sketch. Mr. Sergeant is a son of Charles and Polly (Woodard) Sergeant, and was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, April 1, 1832. In 1855 he came west with his father and settled in Black Hawk County, Iowa, where he laid out and christened the town of "Hudson."
In 1861 Mr. Sergeant decided to seek his fortune in the mining districts of Colorado, where he was successful in accumulating about three thousand dollars. After ten years in the gold fields he returned to Iowa. During his residence in Colorado he was elected to the State Senate to fill a vacancy made by the incumbent moving out of the State, but refused to act as a legislator.
Mr. Sergeant was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Condit, daughter of Sylvester G. Condit, a native of Washington County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Condit was a very early settler in Scott County, having come here about 1835, and settled in Le Claire Township. Mrs. Sergeant, née Condit, was born here and has resided in the Township ever since. The date of their marriage was November 19, 1873.
Mr. Sergeant owns a great deal of valuable land in Le Claire Township, and has platted a town on the bank of the Mississippi river and named it Island City.
