The subject of this sketch was a native of Birdwood, Gloucestershire, England, where he was, December 11, 1826. His parents were James and Hannah (Elliott) Pickering, of English birth.
Charles E. received his primary education in the village of his birth, where he resided until 1842, when he came to America and located near Saratoga, New York, where he engaged in farming. After twelve years of residence in that State he came to Scott County, Iowa, where he purchased land in the northeast part of Davenport Township, consisting of two hundred and fifteen acres. In 1874 he disposed of his farm and purchased another tract of land just east of the city limits, where he lived until his death, June 30, 1890.
In 1869 Mr. Pickering was united in marriage to Miss Jane Parry, a sister of the late Dr. Parry. Their union was blessed with four children, three of whom are living: Sophia, Bessie, Mary E., who live with their widowed mother on the old homestead.
