JOHN M. MCCAUSLAND.

Since 1855 there has been no name in the northeastern part of Scott County more familiar than that which heads this biographical sketch. John C. McCausland was a native of the old Keystone State, being born in Lancaster County, May 15, 1814. His parents were William and Rebecca (Clemson) McCausland, and he was left an orphan at the age of seven, his mother having died at his birth. He was cared for by an older brother, who was managing the farm, until he was seventeen years of age, and during this time he had received a common school education. The estate was then divided among the children and John C. employed a housekeeper and cultivated his share of the farm for three years, when he sold it and engaged in buying and selling stock, which he followed for many years.

February 16, 1836, Mr. McCausland was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Garber, who was also a native of Lancaster County, where she first saw the light of day, November 12, 1815, and was a daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Garber. After their marriage they moved around for several years before settling down, when in the spring of 1855 he emigrated to Iowa and settled in Butler Township, where he purchased three hundred and twenty acres of land on section twenty three, after which he purchased the entire section. For many years he engaged in breeding thoroughbred cattle, but he found it not as profit able as other branches of business, hence he abandoned it and engaged in buying and shipping stock for the Chicago market.
