The subject of this biographical sketch is a self-made man in all the full sense of the term. He first saw the light of day in Pleasant Valley Township, Scott County, December 23, 1847, and is the third son of William and Catharine Du Bois. His education was obtained in Princeton Township at District No. 3 school. In those days it was seldom a scholar got more than a three months' schooling out of twelve, and Theodore was no exception to this rule, for his father had a large family and his income was meager. The best part of his education was obtained in later years through practical business experience. He followed farming until 1886, when he moved to Princeton and began dealing in live stock. Since that time he has been very successful, his business having been extended each year, until he has become one of the largest shippers of live stock in the northeastern part of Scott County.
Mr. Du Bois was united in marriage to Miss Evaline Myers, daughter of C. T. and Sarah Myers, on April 9, 1872. The only child born of this union died in infancy.
Mr. Du Bois has twice been elected to the office of Township trustee, and after serving nine years as member of the school board he was reëlected in 1894 for another term of three years. Since he became a resident of Princeton he has been elected mayor of that city twice and has also served as a member of the city council. He is a member of Swan Lodge No. 234, Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Princeton, and of the Home Forum, a fraternal and insurance organization having its headquarters in Chicago. In political matters he, like his deceased father, is a staunch Democrat. As a business man he is one of the active and enterprising young men of Scott County. Having been born here, he has grown up with the County, and has contributed his full share toward the development of its resources and the upbuilding of its institutions.
