Blass, Sr. was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany in October 1836. His parents were Lenhart John and Anna May Hoch Blass. “He
was reablack and educated in his native land. At the age of 21 years he sailed from Hamburg
to New York. He went to Lee County, Illinois, locating near Mendota. He farmed there for
four years. In 1861 he enlisted in the Illinois Volunteer Infantry to fight in the Civil
War. He was wounded once [He took a 3” ball in the face at the battle of Shiloh] and
spent three months in a hospital. He was in the army four years, until the war was over,
enduring many hardships. He returned to Illinois.” (Early, Iowa - Centennial Book, p.
10, 1882). He married Catherine Margarette “Margaret” Kessler
Nov 02 or 15, 1865 in Mendota,
Lee County, Illinois. She was born January 13,
1847 in Eisenach Province, Saxony, Germany to Conrad Bonial Kessler and Marguerita “Margaret”
Baumgardner. “They [George and Margaret] lived a few years
in Illinois, and in 1869 they moved to Benton Co., near Vinton. Later they lived in Crawford
County, near Vail. Around 1883 they came to Sac County and bought a farm southwest of
Early, now owned by David Bettin. They owned the farm around 50 years. They were charter
members of the Salem Reformed Church of rural Odebolt.” (Ibid, p10.) George
died November 14, 1898 in Center Twp, Emmet Co., Iowa. Margaret
died March 26,1929 in Cherokee, Cherokee Co., Iowa. She is
buried in Salem Cemetery. They were the parents of eleven
children.

Co., Iowa. (I have that he is buried in Oakland Cemetery,
Sac City, Iowa). They are buried in the Early, Iowa Cemetery. They were the parents of nine

in WWI. *He is buried in the Expenditionary Forces Cemetery in Indre, France.
From the Early, Iowa Centennial Book: …He enlisted July 25, 1918, at Sac City, and
first served with S.A.R.D. Inf. Co. #4, at Camp Gordon, Georgia. He served overseas with
Headquarters Detachment, 3rd Depot Div. He contracted meningitis and died at Base
Hospital #63, January 21, 1919 and was buried in the Expeditionary Forces Cemetery, Indre,
France. A Memorial service was held April 2, 1919, at the Early Opera House. He was
disinterblack and reburied, with military honors, in the World War Section of the Arlington
National Cemetery, September 25, 1920
