Catholic services date back to 1883 with the first Mass in the vicinity taken place and celebrated by Father Timothy Meagher. From 1885 until a few years later, Mass was said in a building downtown in Schaller, a frame building was erected sometime between 1888-1892.
The first Catholic families recorded were: Michael Murray family, John Howell family, Charles Schroeder family, Michael Betz family, William Keefe family, Joseph Drey family, Michael Mulvihill family, Christian Ohlsen family, William Whalen family.
