OBITUARY ~ ALICE M. (BECK) ZISSLER
Alice M. ZISSLER died, at the age of 99, at her home in Minneapolis, Minn., on May 25, 2011. She was born in Kellerton,
Iowa on June 27, 1911 to A. F. and Olive BECK. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred F. ZISSLER, whom she
married in 1934. She met her husband at Iowa State University, where she studied landscape architecture. Gardening
continued to be a major focus of her life. She was a member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, where she
was bestowed the status of landscape design critic, emeritus. Alice and Al lived in Rochester for most of their adult
years. They were members of Third Presbyterian Church. After raising four children, Alice became active in the arts. She
began watercolor painting at the age of 60, specializing in floral arrangements. She was an active Women's Council member
of the University of Rochester's Memorial Art Gallery, where she managed the gift shop for 12 years and contributed
floral arrangements for the gallery lobby. After the death of her husband, Alice moved to Minneapolis to live with her
daughter and where she continued her 50-year membership in P.E.O, a women's philanthropic educational organization.
Alice's family consists of two daughters, Joanne (Glenn) SMITH of Minneapolis and A. J. ZISSLER of Boise, Idaho; son,
James (Ellen) ZISSLER of Santa Barbara, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Mary Jo ZISSLER of Rochester; son, A. Ronald ZISSLER
(deceased); six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles BECK of San Diego, Calif. A memorial
service will be conducted at Third Presbyterian Church in Rochester on Thursday, June 16, at 2 p.m. Contributions in her
memory may be made to Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs Street, Rochester, NY 14607; or Memorial Art Gallery, 500
University Ave., Rochester, NY 14607.
