Leana Fern SPURRIER, daughter of John & Myrtle ETHINGTON SHAFFER, was born on a farm north of Clearfield, Iowa on
May 24, 1911 and passed away on September 18, 2007 at Clearview Home in Clearfield.
On December 26, 1931, she was united in marriage to R. E. SPURRIER and to this union 3 children were born; Richard,
Dean, and John Paul SPURRIER. Fern moved to town at the age of 8 and lived the rest of her life in Clearfield.
Fern was valedictorian of her graduating class from Clearfield High School in 1929 and taught school for 3 years
before getting married. She was a member of the Clearfield Christian Church and was a Sunday school teacher for many
years. She was a Past Matron of the Corneilia Chapter of Eastern Star, a member of the Clearfield Lionells and a
member of the Clearfield Library Board.
Fern & R. E. enjoyed camping and spent many winters in Texas and traveling to Japan with the Lions Club in 1969. They
also spent many Augusts camping with the Lions at the State Fair.
Left to cherish her memory is her son Dean SPURRIER & wife Brenda of Clearfield; daughter-in-law Mary Ellen SPURRIER
of Clearfield; grandchildren Cory SPURRIER of Des Moines, Clint (wife Kris) SPURRIER of Mount Ayr, Scott (wife Lori)
SPURRIER of Clearfield, Angela (husband Chris) NAYDOCK of Gilbert, AZ, and Brent (wife Tracy) SPURRIER of Corning;
15 great grandchildren; 1 sister Margaret HENDERSON of Lenox; 3 sisters-in-law Charlene SHAFFER of Clearfield,
Audrey SHAFFER of Boulder, CO, and Betty SHAFFER of Longmont, CO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son John Paul; son Richard; 4 brothers Clyde, Gilbert,
Delbert, and Donaven; 2 sisters Opal McMICHAEL and Louise FRENCH; brothers-in-law Earl CAMPBELL, Harvey FRENCH, and
Ralph McMICHAEL; and 2 sisters-in-law Lillian CAMPBELL and Irma SHAFFER.
Services were conducted on Saturday, September 22, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. from Christian Church of Clearfield, Iowa, with Rev. Eydie STEPHENS
officiating. Musician was Patty PARRISH and the congregational hymns were "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "In The Garden."
Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Casket bearers were Cory SPURRIER, Clint
SPURRIER, Scott SPURRIER, Brent SPURRIER, Dwight MATHENY and Larry BRAMMER. Fern was laid at rest in the Clearfield
Cemetery at Clearfield.
