OBITUARY - DR. ELLEN "CARMELITA" (O'CONNER) MEINDL

Dr. Carmelita MEINDL was born March 7, 1928 at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond Heights, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. She was the daughter of John T. and Ella (CARMODY) O'CONNER.

Carmelita was raised southwest of Maloy, Iowa on a farm. She graduated from Duchesne College in Omaha, Nebraska and returned to teach at Maloy. She moved to St. Louis and began teaching the English gifted program in the public schools. After earning her doctorate of philosophy degree from St. Louis University, in St. Louis, Missouri she taught at St. Louis University, Indiana University - South Bend; was the chairperson of the Education Department at Fontbonne College in St. Louis and retired as director of inservice education at St. Mary's Health Center in St. Louis.

Carmelita married Joseph MEINDL in St. Louis in 1970. She lived most of her adult life in St. Louis and had permanently moved to the farm where she grew up in June of 2000.

Carmelita was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maloy. She belonged to many professional organizations and her work has been published in professional journals.

Carmelita passed away September 11, 2000.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Jane McDONALD.

Carmelita is survived by her husband Joseph of Blockton, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maloy, Iowa on September 14, 2000 with Fr. Leonard KENKEL officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Nancy SACKETT. Casket bearers were Jim HANSHAW, Jason HANSHAW, Mark FRIEDMAN, Earl DRAKE, Richard DAVISON and Robert DAVISON. She was laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery in Maloy, Iowa.
