Margaret Annn (JEANES) MATTHEWS, 73, died Saturday, September 5, 1987, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, where she had been a patient for a few days.

She was born August 16, 1914, near Maloy to James E. and Mary E. BYE JEANES. She graduated from Redding High School. She married Joseph MATTHEWS April 6. 1938. To this union two children were born, JoAnn and William. They farmed several years in Ringgold County until Joe retired in 1955. After Joe's death she moved to Mount Ayr and worked at the Cleaview Nursing Home for 16 years before she retired in 1980. She moved to Huxley, Iowa to be closer to her children in 1980.

Margaret was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Huxley. She enjoyed a wide variety of activies, including gardening, sewing and crafts. Her family and friends also benefited from these activites. She volunteered much time to help the city librarian with the pre-school story hour; made caps for the hospital guild to be used for premature babies; knitted outer clothing for Story County Social Services.

Survivors include a daughter, JoAnn BARNES and her husband, Carl, of Alleman, Iowa; a son, William and his wife, Alice, of Des Moines, Iowa; two granddaughters, Karla and her husband, Rob ALBAUGH, and Kristine BARNES; two grandsons, Joe and Ray MATTHEWS; three sisters, Merle GREELEY of New Market, Louise JONES and husband Alva of Clearfield, and Evelyn REYNOLDS and husband Merrill of North Hollywood, Calif.; for sisters-in-law, Alta JEANS of Redding, Doris (Bertie) JEANES of Lamoni, Carold JEANES of Waverly, and Lora NEWBURN of Clearfield; one brother-in-law, Harlan FREEMAN; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held September 8, 1987, from the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, conducted by Rev. Patrick NIXON. Music was provided by Mike GREENE, Mrs. Dan DUNNING and Mrs. Robert FISHER.

Casketbearers were Bob LYNCH, Lee KEENAN, Raymond WALTER, Don SEVIER, Billy WYMAN and Gene MOTSINGER. Honorary pallbearers were Ben HILL, Earl WHEELEN, Ronald CONLEY, Pat CARR, Richard ROUTH and Forrest OVERHOLSER. Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, Iowa.
