Winifred Knox, daughter of Howard and Mary Calkin Knox, was born September 25,
1909, on the family farm three miles west of Clearfield, Iowa, and passed away
at the Clearview Home in Clearfield, Iowa, on November 1, 1993, at the age of
84 years, one month, and six days.
Winifred's education began in a country school, better known as Corn Bread
College, and later attended Clearfield High School. After leaving high school,
Winifred lived at home with her parents and became a homemaker.
Winifred was a member of Greenwood Church, Southwest of Clearfield and of
Greenwood Ladies Society. Later, she became a member of Clearfield United
Methodist Church.
In November 1958, she moved with her parents to Lenox, Iowa. After their
death, she continued to live there alone and attended the Lenox United
Methodist Church. She enjoyed attending the Adult Sunday School Class and
Lenox U.M.W.
Winifred enjoyed cooking, sewing, and attending to her flowers. She loved to
make quilts. She especially enjoyed her great nieces, Shanda and Sherry
Stephens and Anndee Huegel, and a great nephew Jeffrey Stephens, children of
Ivan Stephens and Enid Stephens Huegel.
Winifred enjoyed celebrating birthdays. She was born on her father's birthday,
so they shared their "big day" together. One year after his death, her great
niece, Sherry Lynn Stephens arrived on September 25 and Winifred was so proud
to share her birthday with her.
Winifred really enjoyed her neighbors in Lenox, especially the birthday
coffees. She was always talking of the arrival of a little one in the
neighborhood and kept us informed of their progress from birth till they were
all grown up.
In August 1986, Winifred was diagnosed with having two inoperable brain
tumors. She entered the Clearview Nursing Home in Clearfield, Iowa where she
received excellent loving care for seven years.
Winifred was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Raub and Clifford
and one sister Evelyn and a brother-in-law Wilson Stephens.
