Funeral services for Vernie Horton of Clearfield were held Thursday, Dec. 30,
at United Methodist Church in Clearfield, with Rev. Alan Rusk and Rev. Phil
Henderson officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Dick Longfellow and Don
Wilson.
Casket bearers were Wayne Wilson, Charles Jackson, Grover Main, Jerry
Fletchall, Dean Spurrier and Richard Spurrier.
Honorary pall bearers were Dale Bickel, Jerry Golden, Jerry Ewalt, Rupert
Herring, Wayne Kemery, Dwight Matheny, and Dick Longfellow.
Interment was in Clearfield Cemetery. Military graveside rites were performed
by members of Woodside American Legion Post 97.
Wilson-Watson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Vernon Dean Horton, son of Bill & Grace (Short) Horton, was born May 28, 1935,
at Conway and departed this life Dec. 27, 1993 at his barber shop in
Clearfield at the age of 58 years, 7 months and 30 days. He attended
Clearfield Schools & graduated in 1954.
He entered the Army in Oct. of 1954. While in the Army he served as a cook,
and cooking was something in later years he enjoyed doing for his family and
friends.
On Jan. 16, 1955 he was united in marriage to Carol Lee Abarr at the United
Methodist Church in Clearfield. To this union were born 2 children, Douglas
Dean & Janet Lee, both of Lenox.
Vernie attended Iowa Barber College in Des Moines and had a barber shop in
Clearfield for 35 years. One of Vernie's favorite pastimes was visiting with
friends in his shop and on main street. He also was an avid gardener, taking
much pride in it as well as his yard and home.
Sports were an important part of his life. He coached Little League Baseball,
officiated football and basketball and was scorekeeper
for basketball for 20 years. He loved his children and grandchildren dearly
and enjoyed watching their many activities. He was looking
forward to watching his grandchildren as they participated in sports and
activities in the years to come.
He was very active in community affairs. He was a member and treasurer of the
Clearfield Lions Club and past City Treasurer and past treasurer of the
Clearfield School Board. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church
and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Lee; his son Doug (wife Paula) Horton of
Lenox; daughter Jan (husband Lynn) Christensen of Lenox; seven grandchildren,
Abbie, Blake and Josh Horton, and Tara, Tisha, Tate, and Trey Christerisen of
Lenox; sisters Cleota (husband Boyd) Larsen of Clearfield and Kay (husband
Lanny) Douglas of Lenox; mother-in-law Marietta Abarr of Clearfield and a host
of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Johnny and Bob.
Vernie was a friend to all and willing to help others.
