Clyde Carroll Horton "Pete", the second son of Clyde William and Mabel Moore Horton was born May 13, 1912, near Conway, Iowa and passed away at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, December 28, 1996.

On October 22, 1931, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Ferguson and to this union were born two children, Ruth and Jerry.

Pete was engaged in farming in 1931 and due to cinch bugs and drought was forced to sell out during the depression years. In 1933 they went to Washington state and worked on a ranch and construction. In 1936 the family moved back to Iowa where he worked at various jobs for as little as 50 cents a day. In 1949 he became custodian and school bus driver for the Clearfield School.

In 1961 they applied for work at Glenwood State Hospital School. While working there they did research on Coed living for young adults.

They worked one year with juvenile delinquents before retiring.

Following retirement they traveled and spent the winters fishing in Texas, he was a member of the Clearfield Lions Club and Clearfield Methodist Church. In 1982 he married Irene Hinshaw.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ruth, in 1973, son-in-law, Virgil Brown in 1996, his wife Marj of 50 years in 1981, wife Irene in 1998, brother Bill Horton and his parents.

Survivors include his son Jerry (Karen) Horton of Richland, Iowa, grandchildren; Gary (Sara) Horton of Coralville, Iowa; Robert Horton of Fairfield, Iowa; Jackie (Bruce) Bierma of Mauston, Wisconsin; Patricia (Chris) Garvey of Omaha, Nebraska; Kelly (Zeny) Brown of San Diego, California; Brian (Debbie) Brown of New Virginia, Iowa. Great grandchildren: Erika and Shannon Bierma, Christopher Garvey, Jeremy and Jenna Brown. His dear friend and companion Grace Brown. Sisters Helen Lou Duey of Clearfield, Iowa, Isabel Trost of Lenox, Iowa, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Services were held Tuesday December 31, 1996 at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield, Iowa with Rev. Al Rusk officiating. Music was by Patty Parrish and Kathy Nelson. Casket bearers were Chris Garvey, Bruce Bierma, Brian Brown, Gary Horton, Robert Horton, and Jerry Fletchall. Honorary Pall Bearers were Kelly Brown, Eldon Still, Jerry Ewalt, and Johnny Duey. Burial was at the Clearfield Cemetery in Clearfield, Iowa.
