OBITUARY - MATILDA AGNES (SOBOTKA) JEZEK
Matilda Agnes SOBOTKA JEZEK, the eighth of nine children was born to Joseph Jr. and Mary (KRECHKY) SOBOTKA, on
December 12, 1900, on the SOBOTKA family farm southeast of Diagonal. She passed away November 1, 1986, at the age of
85 years, 10 months and 20 days, at the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
She graduated from the Star Center
Rural School in Washington Township. In 1919 she was baptized and joined the First Methodist Church of Diagonal,
On January 20, 1924, she was united in marriage to the boy across the road, David A. JEZEK, at the parsonage
of the First Methodist Church in Diagonal.
They established their home of 34 years on the JEZEK farm,
southeast of Diagonal. Two children, Earl David and Mary Margaret, were born to this union. Matilda was a charter
member of the Wednesday Club and a member of the Methodist Women's Society.
In 1959 she and David retired
from farming and moving to their new home in Diagonal. Retirement consisted of continuing to raise a large
vegetable and flower garden. Her association with the young children, who passed her home going to and from
school, brought her much enjoyment. Helping friends and neighbors was another source of joy.
She was preceded
in death by her husband, David, on January 16, 1978. In November 1979, she became a resident of Clearview
Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, where she resided until her death.
Other family members who preceded her were:
her parents; five sisters, Albena (Mrs. John RYCHNOVSKY), Anna (Mrs. William RICKER), Mary (Mrs. Lewis SLAVIK),
Sophia and Rose, who both died in infancy; three brothers, Fred SOBOTKA, Edward SOBOTKA and Andrew SOBOTKA,
all of the Diagonal community.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Janet JEZEK of Los Altos,
California; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Phillip STAMPER of Colorado Springs, Colorado; six grandchildren,
Wayne STAMPER and wife Becky of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Gary STAMPER and wife Jeanetta of Dillon, Colorado, Bruce
STAMPER and wife Debbie of San Jose, California, Carl of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Linda JEZEK of Mountain
View, California, and Kenneth JEZEK of Van Nuys, California; four great-grandchildren, Kyle and Mark
STAMPER of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Ryan and Holly STAMPER of Dillon, Colorado; two sisters-in-law, Eva SOBOTKA and
Frances SOBOTKA of Diagonal; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held November 4, 1986, from
the United Church of Diagonal, conducted by Rev. Eydie DEAL. Music was provided by Mrs. Harold TAYLOR,
Mrs. Richard TAYLOR and Mrs. Jack TAYLOR.
Casketbearers were Leo SOBOTKA, Joe SOBOTKA, Ivan SOBOTKA,
David SOBOTKA, Charles SOBOTKA and Lawrence RYCHNOVSKY. Burial was in the Bohemian Cemetery at Diagonal, Iowa.
