OBITUARY - JOHN EDWARD COMBS

John Edward COMBS, son of Charley and Lillie Mae (WILKINSON) COMBS, was born February 11, 1907, at Allendale in Worth
County, Missouri. He departed this life at his home in Clearfield, Iowa, on July 30, 1989. John's early years were
spent on farms in Worth County, Missouri and Ringgold County, Iowa. He graduated from Redding High School with the class
of 1928. He will be remembered in his home community for his love and participation in sports, especially basketball and
baseball. On February 26, 1930, John was united in marriage with Freda Mae JAMESON at Bedford, Iowa. They made their
home in the Redding area until 1949 when they moved to a farm southeast of Clearfield, Iowa. In 1955, they moved to their
present home in Clearfield where John was employed by SPURRIER Oil Company. John was a member of Noble Lodge #457 A.F. &
A.M. He was a charter member and for many years as active participant in the Clearfield Lions Club. John is survived
by his wife, Freda; son, Donald Dean and wife, Judy, of Bloomfield, IA; daughter Donna Mae HIATT and husband, Paul, of
Grant City, MO; grandchildren, Regina ROGERS and husband, Jim, of St. Joseph, MO, Kevin HIATT and wife, Shelly, of Grant City, MO,
Jeffry COMBS of Stockton, CA and Victor COMBS of Grinnell, IA. Also surviving are two great-grandsons, Brock and Jordan
HIATT; a sister, Cleda DANIELS of Mount Ayr, and two brothers, Harold of Mount Ayr and Harley of Redding. He was preceded
in deathy by his parents, two brothers and two sisters. John was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather. He
cherished his many friends, young and old alike, and was especially kind to those in need. He was always ready with a
helping hand. Final rites were conducted Wednesday, August 2, 1989, at the Clearfield United MethodistChurch, with
Rev. Alan RUSK, officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Dick LONGFELLOW, Mrs. Richard SPURRIER and Mrs. Harold NELSON.
Casketbearers were Richard ROUTH, Charles JACKSON, Gilbert SHAFFER, Jerry FLETCHALL, Lawrence BARKER and Richard
SPURRIER. Honorary pallbearers were Lee BAILEY, James DARST, J. B. ROUTH, Orrin LARSEN, Henry CALKIN, Joe STEVENSON,
Archie BAILEY and Dale JUERGENS. Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield, Iowa. Masonic graveside rites were
conducted by Noble Lodge #458 A.F. & A.M., Clearfield. A memorial was established to the Lenox-Clearfield Rescue Squad.
