THE WININGER FAMILY

Descendants of Andara WININGER

Scott County, Virginia and Hawkins County, Tennessee

NOTE: The WININGER surname has been spelled as "WINEINGER" or "WINNEINGER" "WINEGAR" in some censuses and documents.

The first recorded ancestor of the WININGER family was Andara WININGER.

Most of the WININGERS who resided in Scott County, Virginia and Hawkins County, Tennessee during the early 1800's are descendants of either David and Martha (POTTER) WININGER or Andara and Catrin WININGER or John Alexander and Catherine WINEGAR.

Clemens DUNKELBERGER was born in Solingen, Wurtemberg, Germany, the son of Clemens and Maria Martaretha (GODSCHALK), and married in 1738 to Anna Maria HAUER. Anna Maria (HAUER) DUNKELBERGER was born in Germany in 1720, the daughter of Hans Miehll, Sr. and Anna Maria (STEINER) HAUER. Clemens DUNKLEBERGER died February 12, 1776, Windsor Twp., Berks County, Pennsylvania. NOTE: The surname is spelled "DUNCKELNBERG" in German records.

Catherine (DUNKELBERGER or DUNGELBERGER) was the daughter of Clemens (or Clementz) and Anna Maria (HAUER). She was born in 1740, Windsor Twp., Berks County, Pennsylvania, and died March 30, 1832, Church Hill, Hawkins County, Tennessee. Catharerine and Andara WININGER married in Berks County, Pennsylvania. It has been noted that Andara WININGER was the son of Nicholas and Catherine or Catrina (GFELLER) WININGER.

Clemens DUNGELBERGER's will which was recorded in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 1776 mentions "my son- in-law Andara WININGER and his wife Catharina." It is believed that this is the same Andara and his wife Catharina (DUNGELBERGER or DUNKELBERGER) WININGER. Andara was listed in the personal property tax lists of Washington County, Virginia from the years of 1804 to 1810. Then, Andara moved to Hawkins County, Tennesse where he wrote his will in 1810, thinking that he was about to die while suffering from typhoid fever. Andara recovered and lived until 1832.

From this 1810 will, it is determined that Andara and Catrin (DUNKELBERER or DUNGELBERGER) WININGER were the parents of at least seven sons:

NOTE: An article appeared in the Jasper County, Indiana newspaper which stated that Sarah and Isaiah were in love but Sarah's father Peter Kinder WININGER was against any possibility of the young couple getting married. Isaiah left for Crawford County, however due to the fact that Sarah was pregnant, a magistrate was sent out to bring Isaiah back to Dubois County. Arrangements were made for the couple to wed but Peter refused to allow them to marry in his home. At the time the article was published, Isaiah had left Dubois County, Indiana. He evidently was found, the couple married, and became the parents of twelve children.

Isaiah's father Hugh D. CASSIDY was born in Ireland in 1808 [perhaps the reason Peter WININGER didn't want his daughter Sarah to marry Isaiah?], and was naturalized as an American citizen September 12, 1842 renouncing "allegiance to Queen Victoria of Great Britian and Ireland." Spring Valley Herald, March 24, 1911
CROWDER, FLOYD. Floyd, the little son of Chas. CROWDER died Monday night after a severe illness of about two weeks and much suffering in all. The sorrow of the child is unusually deep, because this death has separated twin brothers, which have been the truest of brothers since their earliest days. The child had been a perfect picture of health until the measles took hold of it about two weeks ago, followed up by pnemonia ant then with cerebral spinal menegitis. Of nine that were sick in the family, Floyd was the last to be overtaken by the disease. The enitre community sympathizes with the family in the sorrow and as a word in conclusion to father, mother, sister and brothers, be comforted as little Floyd's spirit is with the angels. The body was interred in Robinson Cemetery, Tuesday 2 p.m.

NOTE: Floyd died during the height of a measles epidemic that spread through Orange County, Indiana during March of 1911. All public schools were closed in an attempt to stop the epidemic of measles which was followed with pneumonia.

OBITUARY- WILBURN PATTON HEAD

Wilburn P. HEAD, who was a native of this county, but who has lived several years in Kentucky, was killed by his horse on his farm in Lee County, KY., where he had gone from his home in Richmond to see about some matters on his farm, on Friday afternoon, July 1 [1922]. He was in a field among his cattle when his horse suddenly kicked him in the breast, from which he died the following morning.

This was a shock to his many friends in Scott County, as there has not been a more manly man, with stronger traits of character, went out from our people than Wilburn P. HEAD. Everybody who knew him admired and liked him. He was the son of the late H. P. HEAD and was reared below Speers Ferry, this county in Robinett Valley. He will be recalled by many here several years ago as a student at Shoemaker College, also by many of his school friends when at William and Mary College. Later he left college and went to Idaho and was engaged in the sheep business there for several years; returned from there and married Miss Mollie STEPHENSON, daughter of the late J. W. STEPHENSON, near Speers Ferry. He then engaged for a while in the mercantile business at Appalachia, and later in merchandising and farming in Kentucky. To this marriage four daughters were born. He has been successful in business and always made friends where he went. He has several relatives in Scott County, J. H. PETERS, of the Peoples National Bank, being his cousin and boyhood friend. He leaves one brother, H. H. HEAD of Appalachia, and one sister, Mrs. Paralee DARTER, of Church Hill.
