A congressional act of 1855 entitled soldiers who served in military service of the United States to receive Land grants. This original land grant of 120 acres was presented to Martin Ray, a Private in Captain Warner's Company, New Hampshire Militia during the War of 1812.  Martin Ray assigned the land to Joseph M. Clarke on  May 1, 1860.
The land description included the south 1/2 of the southeast quarter and the northeast quarter of the southeast quarter of section 34 in Township 76 north and Range 38 west (all in Lincoln Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa).
