Hello Polk County!     I was born and raised in Des Moines and worked there as an historical consultant until 1991.      There is a Grand Army of the Republic grave marker at my great- grandfather's grave.  I have no other evidence that he served in the Civil War, and I have my doubts that he did.  i checked a large published roster some time ago and found nothing.     i would like to know if there are GAR records available that I could check.

I my wife were born and raised in Iowa. Somewhere along the way we acquired a wooden hanger, we think in the first house we owned in Chariton, and are interesed in finding out what we can about the company that had it made. In the center of the hanger, on the wood under the hook is says "No More" "No Less" "$15" "Made by Union Labor". On the left arm "Suit or Overcoat to Order" and underneath that "Oldest $15 Store in the West B. F. BAILEY, Propr. On the right arm  "Glascow Woolen Mills Co." and under that "819 Sixth Ave. Branch at 422 E. Locust, Des Moines, Iowa" We have used this hanger now for about 25 years without giving it a thought till now.  Any information you can provide would be appreciated. I have images of the hanger scanned into my computer in tiff format. Dick and Joyce Kirkham Originally from Perry, Iowa.

Electa ENOS, b 1840 in Ohio, d 1917 at Polk Co, Iowa, she md 1) a Mr. COURSON, c1873 and had two children: Clara bc1874 & Charles bc 1878 both born in Iowa, per Polk Co, Iowa 1880 census.  The census shows she is divorced with these two small children.  By 1900 she lives with a companion,
Esther Courson, 16yrs old, born in Iowa.  We know that she married a George WRIGHT, must have been after this census?  Data on Electa is taken from her
half-sister's obit, Elmira (Rose-Bell) Chapman, that died in 1910 at Paulding Co, Ohio.  This same obit also lists a half brother living at Polk Co, IA, Addison Enos, which we have no record on.  These two Enos' were the children of James & S. (White) Enos.  Would love finding a connection in Polk and that can give information of the descendants of both Addison and Electa.  We would like knowing more of Clara and Charles Courson.  Thank you.

MATHIS-DESPAIN: Jose MATHIS married Lucinda DESPAIN in Kentucky and preceded Lucinda's father John DeSpain to Des Moines County, Iowa. They were still there 1860, but in 1870 Jose is in Polk County, and wife looks like "Lemira", born Penn. Did Lucinda die and he remarry, or is this just a distorted listing for Lucinda? By 1880, Jose is a widower living with son William in Douglas Township. My interest is date and place Lucinda died, and cemetery listing if there should be one.

RUSSELL, Frank and Arthur. In an obituary I read that my great-great- grandfather Arthur RUSSELL owned a store in Des Moines in the early 1800s. In 1847 his son Frank RUSSELL was stricken with rheumatism and his father Arthur heard from traders about the healing waters of Hot Springs, South Dakota so he set out with some emigrants for Hot Springs. Does anyone have access to old newspapers, etc. which might show the name of Arthur RUSSELL having owned a store there in Des Moines? I was told that Arthur was born in Massachusetts and am wanting to find out his wife's name. She was from New Hampshire.
