Lizard Township History

Lizard township, located in the southeast corner of the county, is crossed by the north and south branches of Lizard creek. The Sioux name for Lizard creek was "Was-sa-ka-pom-pa", translated to mean the river with lizards.
Lizard township was established by an order of county judge Luther M Pease on February 19, 1859. The township boundaries went through several changes until the final boundaries were laid in 1874.
The folks in Lizard township were the first west of the Des Moines river. All who arrived were pre-emptors. Congress then granted railways land, and some of the pre-emptors lost their property as the lands were not certified until 1858. The homestead law went in to effect July 4, 1862.
