Baker, John Andrew
[Correspondence of The Journal]— Rev. John Andrew Baker was born in Washington, D. C, Feb. 18, 1832; died Nov. 15, 1921. He was taken to Alabama when a young boy, remaining there until the Civil war. He came to Clarinda, Iowa, at the close of the Civil war. He was united in marriage to Miss Susan Auston, March 4, 1866, who preceded him to her great reward eleven years ago. To this union were born twelve children—two dying in infancy. He confessed a hope in Christ and on Oct. 6, 1877 was ordained a Baptist minister by the Southwestern Association at Emerson, Iowa. Since that time he has lived a consistent Christian. He leaves to mourn his demise ten children, twenty grandchildren, ten greatgrandchildren, and a host of friends. Two hymns he requested sang at his funeral were: "O Happy Day," and "Asleep in Jesus." Sermon text, II. Corinthians, v, i. Rev. S. Rev. John A. Baker - Rev. John A. Baker was born Feb. 11, 1832 in Washington, D. C, and died Wednesday, Nov. 16th, at his home in Harlan Twp. aged 89 years, 9 months, and 15 days. Rev. Baker was a tried and trusted employee of the Shambaugh Milling Co. for years.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Second Baptist
Church, with Rev.
officiating. Interment was in Clarinda Cemetery.

John A. Baker, age 89 years, died at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, 1921, at his home one mile-southeast of Clarinda. He formedly [?] was a preacher, and conducted services in the Second Baptist church in this city. He is survived by four sons and four daughters. His funeral will be held Friday afternoon, Nov. 18, at 2:30 o'clock, at the Second Baptist church. Burial will be in the Covenanter cemetery in Harlan township. Bates, Ophelia A. Hanson Eiker
Mrs. H. G. Bates passed away Wednesday. Nov. 2nd, at her home 115 W. Nishna Street, following a two weeks illness. Short services are being held at the home this Thursday afternoon, at 3:30, conducted by the Presbyterian pastor, Rev. A. B. Marshall D. D., the body being then taken to Lenox for burial. Mrs. Bates was not quite seventy-nine years of age.

Mrs. Ophelia A. Bates, wife of H G. Bates, died at her home on west Nishnabotna street, Nov. 2, 1921, after an illness of but a few days. She was born in Illinois, Jan. 6, 1853, and came to Iowa in 1880. She was twice married, the first time, Feb. 24, 1881. To James A. Eiker, and Oct. 3, 1911, to H. G. Bates. Mr. Eiker died Sept. 13,1896. She was the mother of two daughters, Mrs. Ortie Morley of Lenox, Iowa, and Mrs. Fleta Simmons of Clarinda. She united with the Presbyterian church in early life and was still a faithful member when she entered into her rest. The burial was at Lenox, Iowa. Mrs. H. G. Bates
Mrs. Ophelia A. Bates wife of Mr. H. G. Bates of West Nishna Street, after a short illness, entered iuto her rest on the 2nd of November.
Her maiden name was Hanson. She was born near Hamilton. Illinois, January 5, 1853. She came towa in 1880, and the next year married to James A. Eiker. Two children were born to this union, Mrs. Ortie Morley of Lenox, Iowa Iowa and Mrs. Fleta Simmons, of Clarinda. Mr. Eiker died September 13, 1896 and then on October 3, 1911, she was married to Mr. Bates who, with her two daughters and a brother Monroe Hanson of St. Joseph, Mo., a nephew, two neices and five grand children survive her. She united with the Presbyterian Church in Ill. in her girlhood and was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Clarinda at the time of her death. The burial took place at Lenox, la. last Friday.

Beauchamp, Noah - Noah Beauchamp, son of Nathan and Elvira Beauchamp was born in Terre Haute, Ind., Nov. 6, 1851, and died at his home in this city Dec. 4, 1921, age 70 years 28 days. The cause of his death was heart trouble. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. He has spent most of his life in this vicinity. In 1876 he was married to Matilda Maze. To this union were born two children, George E. Beauchamp of Rapid City, S. Dak., and Mrs Nora Tonkinson of this city. In 1889 Mr Beauchamp was married to Almira J Brees. Three children were born to this union: Mary Frances, who died March 10, 1899, Charles N. Beauchamp,, and Mrs. Florence Thompson of this city. Besides these children he leaves to mourn their loss a loving wife and two brothers, Martin L. Beauchamp of this city and Charley Beauchamp of Council Bluffs; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, besides other relatives and a host of friends. Mr Beauchamp has been a member of the Christian church for many years and has lived a true Christian life.

Bertram, Clara - Mrs Bertram had
lived at Yorktown
Mrs Fred (Clara) Bertram, 90, of Shenandoah died Wednesday [Feb 12, 1975] at the Shenandoah hospital following a long illness.
Her services are to be Saturday at 2 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Shenandoah with the Rev Gary Arp of the Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Memorial is suggested for the Trinity Church, Mrs John Steinkamp to be in charge, or envelopes can be left at the funeral home.
She was born at Seward, Neb, and residence had been there until she and her husband came to Yorktown in 1920. They had a general store for six years before moving to Shenandoah. Mr Bertram was a car salesman for the Ahlgren agency, and died in 1969.
Six children include Alma of Shenandoah, Mrs J E (Edna) Norton, of Alhambra, Calif, Mrs Bert (Marie) Lorimor of Farragut, Mrs Ed (Lillian) Meyer of Fullerton, Calif, Mrs Glen (Selma) Sunderman of Portland, Ore, and Ray of Portland. She had 19 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Mrs Emil Reiting of Seward, Neb, is a sister.

Brown, Norris Lee -
Funeral services for Norris Lee Brown, 44, of Route 2, Clarinda, were conducted at St John Lutheran Church this Monday afternoon. The Rev Carl M Lueker officiated. Interment was in the Clarinda cemetery.
Casketbearers were Eldon Brown, Richard Calhoon, Donald Hoskins, Robert Hull, Lester Neismier and Harry Wagoner. Mrs Duane Wagoner was the organist. Mrs Carmen Clements and Mrs Gene Mulkins were in charge of the register, and Mrs Bill Zenor and Mr and Mrs Robert Henke were flower bearers.
Memorials were established for St John Building fund, Dakota Boys Ranch and the cancer fund.
Visitation was held Sunday from 9 am to 9 pm, and the family received friends and relatives from 7 to 8 pm, at the Clarinda Memorial Chapel, where arrangements were made.
Mr Brown, a life-long resident of Clarinda, died at his home, Saturday [Jan 11]. He had been in ill health for five months. He was born Oct 6, 1930, at Clarinda, the son of Harve and Blanche (Calhoon) Brown. He was raised on the farm where he resided at the time of his death.
He graduated from Clarinda High School in 1949, and enlisted in the U S Navy in 1951. He was stationed at Guam and served aboard the Destroyer USS John R Craig. He married Clythia Sump, April 23, 1955, at Clarinda, and lived in Long Beach, Cal, till his discharge in October of 1955. They returned to Clarinda where he was active in farming. He was a member of the Extension Council, and an active member of St John Lutheran Church where he served as a youth counselor, an usher and served on the Board of Education.
He is survived by his father Harve; stepmother Opal, wife Clythia; three sons: Bruce of Clarinda, Kirk and Douglas, both of the home; one daughter Andrea, also of the home; one grandson, two brothers, Lowell of Farmington, Mich, Arnold of Clarinda; four sisters, Mrs Lisle (Clarice) Young of Medford, Ore, Mrs Alfred (Lois) Miller of Bedford, Miss Geneva Brown of Oak Park, Ill, and Mrs Robert (Ruth) Docker of Henderson.
He was preceded by his
mother.

Buch, Kortnee Marie was born on November 21, 1995 at Omaha, Ne, the daughter of Norman and Dedra Stamps Buch. She died shortly after being brought to Clarinda Municipal Hospital on June 8, 1996.
She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church on December 16, 1995.
Besides her parents, she is also survived by a twin sister, Karyee, and sister Kaylee, who is 2 1/2 years old.
Her grandparents are M/M Carroll Stamps of Gravity and MM Raymond Buch of Clarinda.
Kortnee was preceded in death by an infant sister, Kelsey, in 1991.
Graveside services were held Tuesday morning, June 11, at Immanuel cemetery. A memorial is being established.

Burton, Gertrude McMillan - Gertrude Burton died in Colorado
Mrs Albert (Gertrude) Burton, 70, died Jan 16 at her home in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was formerly Gertrude McMillan, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Harry A McMillan of Clarinda. Two surviving brothers are Ivan McMillan of La Habra, Calif, and Hugh McMillan of Lincoln Park, N J.
Following graduation from
Clarinda schools in 1922, she
attended Simpson college, taught
school in Iowa, and was
employed in Chicago. She
became a professional musician
and entertainer, being member
of a girls' band which toured
Europe, accomplished on seven
instruments. The home has been

Campbell, Clyde M. -
Clyde M. Campbell, Jr. was born December 10, 1923 to Clyde M. and F. Mabel Arnold Campbell at Dexter, Iowa. He graduated from Dexter High School and joined the army during the Korean War. Following his army service he worked as a plumber in Carroll, Iowa.
On December 22, 1956, he was united in marriage to Sarah L. Hill at Newton, Iowa. He is survived by his wife in Clarinda; his son, Mark Arnold of Sioux City; and his son Christopher Frank, wife Diane, and grandson Alexander Frank of Clarinda.
Clyde was in the plumbing and hardware business in Clarinda until his retirement. Most recently he was working part-time at Wallin Plumbing.
Clyde served as Elder in the Carroll Presbyterian Church before moving to Clarinda in 1965. He was also an Elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Clarinda and had served on committees in the Presbytery of Missouri River Valley.
Clyde was active in Clarinda Rotary Club until his death, having served as President for three different terms. He was a Paul Harris Fellow.
He was a long-time member of the National Rifle Association and taught Hunter Safety Classes for the Department of Natural Resources. He was a member of the American Legion in Clarinda. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Maurice, and sister Marian Brooks. Two sisters survive: Evalyn Kingsbury and Katie Shaull.
Death occurred at his home in Clarinda, Iowa on June 6, 1996. Graveside services were in Newton on June 8. Memorial Celebration services were held Monday, June 10 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Roy Fox officiating.
Memorials are suggested for the Trinity Presbyterian Church, the Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship, or the Clarinda Emergency Medical Service.

Crook, Robert - Robert Crook Atlantic postmaster
Robert Q Crook, 63, whose wife is the former June Hamm of Clarinda, died Feb 13 at a Council Bluffs hospital where he had been patient since Jan 16. He had served as Atlantic postmaster for 15 years. He had been born in Wisconsin, and came to Atlantic in 1939, prior to his World War II experience. He was married to Miss Hamm in l941.

Emmett Cummins died Monday
Emmett Cummins, 83, longtime farmer of the Burlington Jet, Mo, area died early this Monday morning at the Fairfax, Mo, hospital, where he had been admitted Sunday evening. He and his wife have been making their home at Northview Manor in Tarkio.
Funeral services are pending at Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel at Burlington Jet.

Depew, Estella Crouse - Mary Estella Crouse Depew was born in Villisca. Iowa, on Aug 8, 1891, to David and Ida Hiatt Crouse. She passed away at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital Dec 24, 1974. She was married Dec 11, 1919, to Charley Depew, who preceded her in death Feb 22, 1973. With the exception of two years spent in Colorado, the couple resided in Page and Taylor counties. She has spent the last 35 years in the home south of New Market.
To this union were born three chlidren Paul Depew, New Market, Leila Depew and Inez Jo Depew, Clarinda.
She is survived by the son, Paul, and his wife, Sarah; daughters, Leila and Inez Jo; a nephew, Delbert Crouse and wife, Kansas City, Mo; a neice, Mrs Richard (Doris) Williams and husband, Glenwood; sisters-in-iaw, Mrs Jennie Cagley, Clarinda. Mrs Corda Depew, Torrance, Cal; and brothers-in-law, George Depew and wife. Ida, Bedford and J A Depew and wife. Alpha, Albuquerque, N M.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Ora Crouse and a brother, Leo Crouse.
Early in life Estella accepted Christ as her Saviour and Lord and remained faithful to this conviction. The family became a part of the New Market Church of Christ congregation in 1949 and she has actively attended when possible.
She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec 27, 2 pm at the Church of Christ in New Market. Loren Daly was officiating clergyman, soloist was Shirley Larson and organist Lois Moore. Pauline
Harland attended the register.
Ushers were Lee Long and Dick Rainforth. Casket bearers were Dean
Moore, Thomas Harris, Dell Damewood, Merle Harland, John Harness
and Robert Malcom. Final resting place was Clarinda Cemetery.

Flood, Florence - Mrs Jim Flood was Mrs Williams' niece.
Services for Mrs Jim (Florence) Flood, 74, of Streator, Ill, will be held at 11 am Saturday at Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca.
Mrs Flood is a niece of Mrs Earl Williams of Clarinda and a former Villisca resident. She died while vacationing in Florida.
She is survived by her husband, a son Thomas and two grandchildren.

Anna Gunaca, 82 Last Rites Held January 31
Funeral services for Mrs. Martin (Anna) Gunaca, 82, of Gardena, California were held at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford conducted by Carl Cummings. Mrs. Gunaca died January 27, 1975 in Gardena, California. Interment was at Conway Cemetery, Conway, Iowa.
Anna C. Taylor, daughter of Robert and Cylinda Wallace Taylor, was born in Clarinda, Iowa, August 3, 1892. She grew to maturity in Clarinda, Iowa, where she attended school and church and was active in the various community affairs.
On November 12, 1920, she was united in marriage to LesterA. Hunter, at the Methodist parsonage in Maryville, Mo.
Until ill health caused her husband to retire from the farm in 1950 the Conway area had been their home. They moved to California to live and her tusband passed away March 22, 1960.
Three children were born to bless this home. Two daughters and one son, Kenneth, who died at the age of 16 months.
On November 1, 1963, she vas united in marriage to Marin Gunaca. He died in March 1967.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.
Left to cherish her memory are the two daughters: Kathryn and her husband, Elmer Freemyer, of Loveland, Colo., and Arlene and her husband, Jean T. Smalley, of Gardena, Calif.; six grandchildren: Larry Freemyer, Marvin Freemyer, Diana Lemmerman, Marsha Marshall, Richard and Roger Smalley; four great grandchildren: Randy Freemyer, Sheralee Freemyer, Kyle Lemmerman and Melissa Freemyer; three sisters: Laura Banister, Bernice Juracek, Jessie Parmely; one brother, Burt Taylor; four sisters-in-law: Bernice Hunter, Gladys Hunter, Lena Hewitt and Doris Taylor; other relatives and many friends.
She was a long time member of the Conway Methodist Church until moving to California when she became a member of the Calvary Baptist church of Gardena, California, he was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for over 25 years.
Mrs. Gunaca will long be remembered as a kind and loving
rife, mother, sister, friend and
neighbor, and she will be sadly

Funeral services for Mrs. John (Anna) Haidsiak, 91, of Blockton, were held February 1 at the United Methodist Church in Blockton conducted by Rev. Jerrold Swentin. Mrs. Haidsiak died January 29,1975. Interment was at Polsley Cemetery, Page County, Iowa.
Beloved person Anna Christina was born July 24, 1883 to Charles and Sophia Grant Holms in Page County.
On November 6, 1901 Anna was united in marriage to John F. Haidsiak. To this union 10 children were born.
Preceding her in death were her husband, John, and three daughters, Hazel, Ethel and Lucile; her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Those left to cherish her memory are Helen Hunter, Frank and Vivian Haidsiak, Fae and Nina Dukes, Wayne and Jean Haidsiak, Otis and Vera Carson, Max and Lois Haidsiak and Harold and Annabel Walkup; 29 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren, nieces; nephews; and hosts of friends and relatives.
Words are inadequate to express the love and devotion she gave. Mom's faith could be exemplified in this prayer: God, I thank you that when I tire of striving and struggling I can yield the load to you. You can do the impossible for me. Keep me close to you, through Christ, Your Son, my

Heiliger, Kenneth Herbert - Kenneth Herbert Heiliger was born October 31, 1916 to Henry Phillip and Hilda Roscher Heiliger in Plymouth, NE. He died June 9, 1996, age 79, at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
Kenneth was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Plymouth, where he attended school. In 1928 the family moved to Lincoln, NE, and Ken attended and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1933. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1938. Ken joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, after employment in the finance business.
On October 5, 1943 he was united in marriage to Ann Louise Gersib at Grace Lutheran Church in Lincoln, NE. The couple lived in Ottumwa, IA and Memphis, TN while Ken was stationed at Naval air stations as an adrninistrative officer. His service duty ended in 1946 as a Lt. in the Navy Reserve. He was employed at Banker's Life in Lincoln, Brown & Bigelow in IA and NE, and in March 1958 he was employed by the Boone Blanic Book Co. as a sales representative on County Government offices in the western half of Iowa, until retirement as Vice President and part owner.
Ken and Ann came to Clarinda in July, 1958, and have made this their home.
Ken was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, and was ordained as an elder. He taught Sunday School for a number of years, and served on various committees. He served as Moderator of the Southwest Iowa Presbytery for one year.
He was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, attending the Estes Park, CO FCA Conference for many years. Ken was also a member of Gideons, the Christian Business Men's Committee, Toastmasters, the American Legion, and the NU Football Touchdown Club.
Ken and Ann were not blessed with children of their own, but they loved children. Ken was known as "Uncle Ken" by many.
Ken is survived by his wife, Ann, of over 52 years; sister-in-law, Doris Heiliger of Sidney; brother-in-law Arthur and wife, Shirley Gersib of Columbus, NE; sister-in-law Esther Gersib of Des Moines; several nieces and nephews; cousins; many other relatives; and a host of friends.
Memorials may be directed to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Gideons, or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, June 12, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Don Fisher and Rev. Ron Davis officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Harry Henneman

Harry F Henneman, 60, of Clarinda died Sunday morning at a hospital in Jackson, Miss, where he had been taken after becoming ill on his way home from Florida. He and his wife and daughter Debbie were on a vacation, when he became ill.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at Walker Funeral Home with the Rev John Clark officiating. Burial will be in Clarinda cemetery.
Mr Henneman was born Dec 31, 1914, in Page County, the son of Mr and Mrs Louis Henneman. He was married to Erma Lou Irwin, Sept 1, 1937. Mr Henneman had operated the Henneman Feed Store before his retirement, due to ill health.

Death of Lee E Higgins, 61, at Pearland, Tex, occurred Jan 6, and services were being held this Thursday at Niday Chapel in Pearland.
Mr Higgins was son of Mr and Mrs Henry Higgins, born in Clarinda Oct 3, 1913. His mother survives him here, as do a brother, Laurence, and four sisters, Mrs Bill (Rae) Kelley and Mrs Alma Harrell of Clarinda, Mrs Robert (Florence) Greenlee of Cheyenne, Wyo, and Mrs Ermal (Irmal) Hamm of Decatur, Ill.

Mrs. Edna I. Humphrey, 84, of Clearmont, MO died early Tuesday morning, June 11, 1996, at her home.
She was bom April 6, 1912, near Braddyville, IA, the daughter of Norman M. and Nina Finnell Fishell. She graduated from Clearmont High School in 1931.
She married William Burch Humphrey on April 23, 1932. Mrs. Humphrey operated the Humphrey Cafe in Clearmont until her retirement. Mr. Humphrey preceded her in death on June 22, 1980.
She is survived by three children: William R. Humphrey and wife, Audria, of Clearmont, MO; Jacob N. Humphrey, Clearmont; and Karen Cook and husband, Donald, of Minneapolis, MN. There are 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Sisters are Ioma Burch, Braddyville and Thelma Guthrie and husband, Kenneth, of Clearmont. Lewis E. Fishell of Clearmont is a brother.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband, son Michael J. Humphrey and brother Lawrence Fishell.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 13 at the United Methodist Church in Clearmont, with Don Barnett officiating. There is open visitation at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda.
Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Clearmont. Memorials may be directed to the Clearmont United Methodist Church.

Jennings, George - Attend funeral services at Humboldt
The Jennings families have returned from attending services for the father of L E (Tony) Jennings which were held Wednesday at Humboldt. George Jennings, 91, of Bradgate died Sunday [Feb 9, 1975] after two months hospitalization.
Mr and Mrs Tony Jennings had gone to Bradgate on Saturday, Mr and Mrs Jerry Jennings and children, Mr and Mrs Bill Jennings and family, Mr and Mrs Myron Nothwehr on Wednesday. Paul Jennings, who is in the air force, flew from Seattle on Tuesday, and is visiting the parental home in Clarinda until last of this week.
The father had been a resident of the care center at Humboldt. His wife died 24 years ago. He had been a farmer since 1914 in the Bradgate rural area.

She was born Dec 17, 1884, in Erwin, Tenn, the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Edwards. She was married to Tildon Correll and later to Hans Larson.

Lee, Georgianna Mae Muehliesen - Georgianna Mae Muehliesen Lee was born Feb 22,1887 in Milwaukee, Wis. to Emil and Gretchen Muehliesen. She was one of a family of five who with their parents have all preceded her in death.
On May 8. 1905, Georgia was married to Samuel T Lee in Chicago, Ill, and to this union were born six sons, Samuel T, James M, Robert C, Brainard E. Richard B and John A Lee, who mourn her death on Dec 27, 1974, in Seattle, Wash.
The Lee family were long time residents of Clarinda, the sons educated and grew up in our community. Both Mr and Mrs Lee are remembered by the host of relatives and Clarinda friends for their contributions to the Covenanter Church, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce and many other civic activities.
Mrs Lee was president of the Page County older boys and girls conference for many years in the early thirties and her enthusiasm for YWCA projects will never be forgotten.
The family home at 120 West Grant Street was filled with hospitality for the young and old neighbor or stranger were welcome.
Mrs Lee felt the love of 15 grandchildren. 18 great grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren. They, along with wives of her sons, will miss her.
Private family services were officiated
by Seattle Covenanter pastor Robert
MacMillan. Interment was in Mt View
Cemetery in Tacoma, Wash by side of
her husband who died in 1957. A son.

Martin, John
John Martin, M.D., 91 years of age, died May 29, 1996 in the Oaknoll Health Center in Iowa City after a long illness. There will be no visitation or memorial service and the body has been donated to the University of Iowa Anatomy Department. Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Iowa Foundation for the John Martin Rare Book Fund in the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences.
Dr. Martin was born December 18, 1904 in Keithsburg, IL to John C. Martin and Nora B. Richardson. He attended the public schools in Keithsburg and Peoria, IL and graduated from the Peoria High School in 1922. He then attended the Lewis Institute in Chicago and received his medical education at Northwestern University.
He was on the faculty at Northwestern and practiced neurosurgery at Passavant and Wesley Memorial Hospitals in Chicago. In 1942 he went into service with the Illinois 12th General Hospital Unit and served in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations during World War U, where he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Following service, Dr. Martin again practiced medicine in Chicago and Haiti before re-entering the Army to establish a neurosurgery residency program at Walter Reed Hospital. He retired from the Army as a full colonel, and subsequently moved to Clarinda, IA to be near a favorite aunt and cousin. He served on the staff of Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
He moved to the Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City in February 1992, and will be remembered in this community for the internationally famous rare medical book collection, which he gave to the University of Iowa; and which is housed in the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences in a room named for him.
He is survived by one brother, Harry, of Sierra Madre,CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister and three brothers. His remains will be interred in the family plot at ML Zion Cemetery, Martinsburg, IA.

Mrs Arthur J (Clover) Mendenhall, 79, of Clarinda died early Sunday [Feb 9, 1975] at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 2 pm Wednesday at Walker Funeral Home with the Rev John Clark officiating. Burial will be in Clarinda cemetery.
She was born Dec 31, 1895, at Clarinda, the daughter of Henry and Isabel Clark Carver. In 1917, she was married to Robert Bond. One son Ralph was born to Mr and Mrs Bond. In 1941 she was married to Arthur J Mendenhall. Mrs Mendenhall had worked at the Farmers Mutual Phone Co from 1921 to 1941 for many years as chief operator.
When she and Mr Mendenhall were married they lived at Unionville, Mo, until 1970, when they returned to Clarinda to make their home.
Mrs Mendenhall is survived by her husband of the home at 314 W Clark and two grandsons, Dennis Bond, stationed with the Air Force in Spain, and Terry Bond of Clarinda. Mrs Audrey Bond of Clarinda is a daughter-in-law. Mrs Jean Edwards of Omaha, a niece was raised in the home as a daughter. There are four great-grandsons.

Funeral services for Mrs Reed (Lu) Merrick, 70, mother of Tom Merrick of Clarinda, were held Wednesday at Hutchinson Funeral Home at Humeston.

Services were held December 15 for Harold E. Millen, 71, at the Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah, Iowa with the Rev. Donald R. Arthur officiating.
Harold died December 13 [1984], at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. Interment was at the Union Grove Cemetery, Northboro, Iowa.
Harold E. Millen, son of Harry and Leila Bullerdick Millen, was born March 25, 1912 at Westboro, Mo. Later he moved to Shubert, Nebr. with his family.
On April 25, 1950 Harold
was united in marriage to Iola New in Bedford, Iowa. One son, Lynn B. Millen, was born to bless this union.
Harold served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Lexington in 1932. Harold was employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad as a station agent for 35 years, living in various communities which included Hopkins, Mo. Stanton, Iowa and Shenandoah at the time of his retirement from the railroads. Later he worked for Beecher Chevrolet in Shenandoah for three years.
He was a member of the Shenandoah United Methodist Church, Eagles Lodge and the Railroad Brotherhood.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Deane Millen.

She was the former Mildred Sipes. She was married to Mr Miller in 1942 and they lived at Country Club Village near St Joseph. Her husband survives, as does a son, Jan of Houston, Tex, who has been with them recently, and daughters, Mrs Jack (Droma) McCall of St Joseph and Mrs Jerry Clymens of Kansas City.

Funeral services for Osie C Moser, 54, formerly of Taylor County and a POW in Germany during World War II, are being held at 1:30 pm Saturday at the Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah, following his death Wednesday at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha.
He was member of Co F 168th Inf, which went from Villisca in WW II, and spent 27 months in prisoner of war camp with many of the Co F buddies from this area. He had recently been employed as driver for Yellow Cab in Omaha.
Rev Darrell Heidner of Omaha, former Shenandoah minister, will officiate at the services.

Nelson, Esther - Mrs Victor (Esther) Nelson, 81, of Shenandoah died this Monday morning [Jan 13, 1975] and services are to be held at 2 pm Wednesday at St John's Lutheran Church in Essex.
Mr and Mrs Nelson have been residents of Garden View Care Center at Shenandoah, originally from Essex. Their sons are Darrell of Pueblo, Colo, and Lysle of Essex and daughter, Mrs Duane (Regina) Wallin of Essex. Two brothers are Clarence and Theodore Swanson of Essex and sister, Mrs Paul (Lillie) Haley of Omaha. There are six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Newberg, Dorothy Marie Sprague - Dorothy Marie Newberg, 67, of Villisca, died Thursday, June 6, 1996 at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Ne.
Dorothy was born March 2, 1929 in Grant, IA, the daughter of Laurance and Julia Sander Sprague.
She married Cecil Newberg on September 5, 1946, in Kansas City, MO. She had worked at Union Carbide in Red Oak for 33 years. Dorothy was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Villisca.
She is survived by her mother Julia Sprague, of Villisca; daughters Mrs. Tom (Linda) Nisely of Glenwood, IA and Janice Newberg of Villisca; son, John Newberg and wife, Vickie, of Fulton, IL; 3 grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Wayne (Jane) Smith of Blair, NE; and brothers Jim Sprague and wife, Carol, of Dorchester, NE and Jerry Sprague and wife, Deb of Eagle, ID.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her father and husband.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 10 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca. Burial was in the Villisca Cemetery. Memorials are to the Advent Christian Church Building Fund.

Ray Oldham, 77, native of Clarinda and brother of Mrs Martha Hurd, died Saturday morning [Jan 18] at Sioux City and services are to be held Wednesday there.
Mr Oldham has been a trainer and handler of horses for many years. He was in Omaha prior to establishing himself in Sioux City in the 1950's. He was son of the late Mr and Mrs Charles Oldham of Clarinda.
His wife, Ada, and daughter, Glenna of Baltimore, survive him. The daughter was at home at time of his death. Leonard and Glen Oldham of Omaha are brothers, and the late Mrs Lewis Arnett was another sister.

Mrs. Ray Pace, 54, of Cheyenne, Wyo., died January 18 in a Cheyenne hospital where she had been taken for minor surgery. She was formerly Maxine Greenlee, daughter of the late Roy and Maude Porter Greenlee of Bedford.
Mrs. Fern Hatfield, a sister, joined Andrew Greenlee of Red Oak and Charles Greenlee of Council Bluffs to go to Cheyenne for the services. The funeral was held January 21 with burial at Cheyenne.
Mrs. Pace was born November 7, 1919, at Bedford and was married to Ray Pace of the Siam vicinity, on October 15, 1937.

Reed, Emmett - Emmett Reed, son of Mitchell and Sarah Reed, was born at Kirkville, Wapello county, Iowa, Dec. 30, 1856, and departed this life at his home in College Springs, Iowa, on Aug. 3, 1921, aged 64 years 7 months and 4 days. At 3 years of age, he with his parents moved to Page county, Iowa, locating near Braddyville, where he grew to manhood. On Jan 17, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Ida E. Morrow at her home west of Braddyville, by the Rev. B. Shinn, who was at that time pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church. To this union were born five children, Effie G., Clyde M., George O., I. Floyd, and Harold LeRoy. The last named died in infancy. Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Reed located on a farm about one and a half miles west of College Springs where they lived thirty-three years. In the spring of 1900, they sold their farm and moved to College Springs, residing there until the spring of 1918, when they moved to Lake Charles, La. There they remained one year, then returned to College Springs where they continued to reside until his decease. Mr. Reed had been failing in health for some months but until recently was not thought to be in a serious condition. For a number of years Mr. Reed has been a faithful reader of the Bible and possessed quite a knowledge of the Scriptures, and sometime ago yielded himself to the Lord. Recently, while talking with a friend, he said that he had surrendered himself to the Lord, and that he knew that everything was all right between him and God, that he was ready to die. Mr. Reed was a good citizen, a loyal friend and neighbor, and a loving and devoted husband, father and brother. He leaves to mourn his departure, his devoted wife, one daughter, Effie G., who for three years has been living in Lake Charles, La., three sons, Clyde M., who tor three years was enlisted in the service of his country during the late war, but for the last seven months has been with his parents; George O., who lives on a farm northwest of College Springs, and Floyd, also of Lake Charles, La. He also leaves four brothers and two sisters, William D. of Clarinda, George W. of Shambaugh, Frank E. of Quitman, Mo., Thomas M. of Braddyville, Mrs. S. J. Armstrong of Sloane, Iowa, and Mrs. Ella M. Johnston, now residing with her daughter in Shambaugh. All but Mrs. Armstrong were present at the funeral service. Besides these he leaves nine grandchildren and many other relatives, and a host of kind and faithful friends. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church, and condcted by the pastor, the Rev. A. P. Keast. Interment was made in Walnut Grove cemetery.

Mrs. Reed died Tuesday night at Bethesda Care Center where she had been for a short time.
She was born Nov. 29, 1898, near College Springs, the daughter of Charles A. and Lulu Baird Walker.
She lived all of her life in the Braddyville and College Springs area except three years.
She was educated in the rural schools of Page County and attended Amity High School in College Springs.
Prior to her marriage she taught in rural schools.
On June 26, 1918 she was married to Lloyd Reed who preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1977.
Mrs. Reed is survived by three children, Loyd Reed of Klamath Falls, Or, Mrs. Glen (Doris) Perry of Northboro, and Lowell Reed of San Leandro, Ca. There are 14 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. Brothers are Harold Walker of Tucson, Az, and Roger Walker of Horseshoe Bend, Ak.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Mitchell, two brothers and one sister.
Burial will be in Braddyville

Junior Renander, 73, of Bethesda, died Thursday morning, June 6, 1996, at Immanuel Hospital, Omaha, NE, following a brief illness. He was bom March 7,1923 to John A. and Mabel E. (Schantz) Renander near Bethesda, IA.
He graduated from Clarinda High School in 1941. On February 28,1952 Junior and Delores Shoemaker were married at the Bethesda Lutheran Church. Together they farmed and raised a family near Bethesda. Junior was also active in the Bethesda Lutheran Church and his community.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Debra and husband, Michael Springer of Creston; 2 grandchildren; brother, John Lisle Renander and wife, Jean, of Salem, OR; sister-in-law Delores Renander of Fort Worth, TX; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents and brother, Warren.
Funeral services were Monday at the Bethesda Lutheran Church, with burial at the Bethesda Cemetery. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Shaulis, Ruth Connell - Mrs Ruth (Paul) Shaulis, of Phoenix, Ariz, died Saturday evening [Jan 11, 1975], of a cerebral hemorrhage.
She attended school in Clarinda, the daughter of the late E.J. and Ina Connell.
Surviving relatives are her
husband of the home in Phoenix,
a daughter Shirley Wanke of
Seattle, Wash, two grandchildren, two brothers and five
sisters. The three sisters in
Clarinda are Gertrude Heatherington, Bertha Lee and Mrs Louis

Smith, Donald R. -
Donald R. Smith Dies Jan. 16 [1975]
Donald R. Smith of Council Bluffs died at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha January 16 after a lingering illness. Funeral services and burial were at Hamburg, la., January 19.

Funeral services for Donald R (Dick) Smith, 43, were held at Hamburg following his death Jan 16 at an Omaha hospital. He was brother of Mrs Vera Moore at New Market, and long-time rodeo and horseman in the Council Bluffs area.
He had returned to Council Bluffs in 1968 after being school superintendent two years in Montana. He served as a front line medic in Korea for 17 months.
His wife, formerly Shirley Pierce of Bedford, a son, Donald, and daughter, Shirley, are of the home in Council Bluffs, and daughter, Mrs Christofer (Cheryl) Wehe of Phoenix, Ariz. His parents are Mr and Mrs Ora N Smith of Council Bluffs.

Sunderman, Glen R. - Services Saturday for Glen Sunderman
Glen R Sunderman, 60, of Clarinda died Tuesday afternoon at Municipal Hospital where he had been admitted Monday evening. His health had not been good for several years.
Mr Sunderman was a veteran of WW II and member of the VFW. He had worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission maintenance department for 34 years.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm Saturday at Walker Funeral Home with the Rev David Patterson and the Rev Richard Ramsdell officiating. Burial will be in Clarinda Cemetery with military graveside rites.
The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 7-8 pm Friday.
Mr Sunderman is survived by his wife Mary of the home at 214 W Garfield and two daughters, Mrs Darrell (Janet )Siefering of New Market and Mrs Eddie (Mary Virginia) McCalla of Clarinda. There are five grandchildren.
Sisters are Mrs Ella Thogmartin of Bedford and Mrs Henry (Mabel )Staashelm of Sac City.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Janice Jane and four brothers and four sisters.

Swanson, Donald Paul - Donald Paul Swanson, 31, of Clarinda, died Sunday morning, June 9, 1996 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha. His death was the result of an accident on the river near Clarinda on Saturday afternoon.
He was born September 28,1964 at Clarinda, the son of Paul A. and Beverly J. Hamm Swanson. Donald was married to Debora Gray on March 30,1991. He was service manager at Cardinal Auto Sales in Clarinda.
Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by a daughter, Samantha. Also surviving are parents Paul and Beverly Swanson, Clarinda; one brother, Edward Swanson of Clarinda; sisters Cindy Cordell of Clarinda, and Janene Willcoxon, Shenandoah; grandfather, Arlo Hamm, Clarinda; and many nieces and nephews. Jack and Joann Gray of Villisca are his father and mother-in-law.
Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Rev. John Clark and Rev. Dennis Bradley officiated. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.
A memorial is being established.

Thompson, Marybird L. Lindsay -
Mrs. Marybird L. Thompson, 85, formerly of Clarinda, died Friday evening, June 7, 1996 at Cameron, MO, where she had lived for the past 4 years.
She was bom on November 2,1910, at Council Bluffs, IA, the daughter of William and Evan Lohmann Lindsay. She was married to Earl Thompson, who preceded her in death. Mr and Mrs Thompson were longtime residents of Clarinda.
She is survived by two sons, (Zip) Thompson and wife, Denise, of Elmhurst, IL and John Thompson and wife, Janet of Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia. There are 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 11 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Rev. John Clark officiated. Burial was in the Clarinda cemetery.

Tompkins, Lola E. - Services Monday for Lola Tompkins
Funeral services for Miss Lola E Tompkins. 86, formerly of Clarinda, were conducted at the Clarinda Memorial Chapel, this Monday. The Rev Richard Ramsdell officiated and interment was in the Clarinda Cemetery.
Casket bearers were William Dugan, Uril Good, Martin Mier, Wilbur Meyer, LeRoy Rope and Kennard Tompkins. Visitation was held at the Clarinda Memorial Chapel from Saturday until time of services Monday.
Miss Tompkins, who had lived in the Clarinda area most of her life, passed away at the Davison Rest Home at Clearmont, Mo, on Friday [Feb 7, 1975]. She was born Feb 17, 1888, at Page Center, the daughter of James and Charlotte (Meyers) Tompkins.
She is survived by two
brothers, Charles of Shenandoah,
and Roy of College Springs, three
sisters, Mrs Ava Carney of
Shenandoah, Mrs Ora Griffith of
Fresno, Calif, and Mrs Ruth
Robison of San Diego, Calif. She
was preceded in death by seven

Wagaman, Amy McElroy - Amy Wagaman died Saturday
Mrs Fred (Amy) Wagaman, 61, died at her apartment at Country Manor Saturday afternoon [Jan 18, 1975]. Police Chief Vern Woodard said the police were called to the scene by acting medical examiner, Dr Kenneth Jensen. It was reported to police by Dr Jensen that Mrs Wagaman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Funeral services for Mrs Wagaman will be at 2 pm Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home with the Rev L P Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.
Mrs Wagaman was born July 11,1913, at Clarinda, the daughter of Harry and Myrtle Fletcher McElroy. She was married to Fred Wagaman, Aug 16, 1933. They had lived at Coin and Glenwood, before moving back to Clarinda. She and Mr Wagaman had lived at Country Manor since last fall, moving here from Coin.
Mrs Wagaman had worked at the MHI and the Glenwood School, as well as cooking at several places during her working years. She had been a news writer from Coin for the Herald-Journal.
Besides her husband, Mrs Wagaman is survived by five children: Paul Wagaman of Glenwood, Mrs Robert (Juanita) Gray of Clarinda, Mrs Herbert (Eula) Thomas of Coin, Mrs Oary (Carole) Hummel of Essex and Richard Wagaman of Glenwood. There are 18 grandchildren and three great -grandchldren. Two brothers are Ralph McElroy of Council Bluffs and Paul McElroy of Coin. One sister is Mrs Dale Bennett of Phoenix, Ariz. Lee H Whitehead Taylor native
Lee H Whitehead, 62, died Thursday at his farm home south of Siam, and services were being held this Monday at Walker Funeral Home with the Rev Bettie Hull officiating and singing.
Besides his wife Shirley, Mr Whitehead is survived by three children: Dusty Whitehead of Clarinda, Mrs Bill (Kay) Rock of Braddyville and Mrs Leonard (Faye) Anderson of Omaha. Horace Whitehead of Colgate, Okla, is a brother. There are three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Frank, two sisters, Hester Whitehead and Mrs Bertha Eden, and an infant grandson, Darian Dean Rock. He was also preceded in death by 5 half brothers and sisters.
He was born July 4, 1912, in Taylor County, the son of W K and Matilda Bennett Whitehead. He was married to Shirley Hughes on June 30, 1936. Mr Whitehead had farmed and worked at Dougherty's Elevator in Bedford as his last employment.
Mrs Grace Perry was organist
at the service. Casketbearers
were Reid Shields, Herb Christie,
Don Dougherty, Dale Loghry,
Bob Brown and Roger Gant.
Honorary bearers were Frederic
Handorf and Ralph McElroy.
Mrs Charles Thompson was at
the register. Burial was in
Memory Cemetery at New
Markets.
