Grace Maude Heller Annan, 94, of Riverton, Wy, died July 17, 1989 at her home in Riverton. Funeral services were held July 21, with burial at Mt. View Cemetery there.
She was born at Red Oak May 22, 1895, to Cora Charter and John Heller. Bryan L. Annan and she were married on Valentine's Day, 1917, in Coin. The family moved to Wyoming in 1935 to farm land home-steaded by her husband's father.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, four brothers and four great-grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Keith Annan of'Saratoga, Wy, and William L. :(Bill) Annan of Coeburn, Va; two daughters, Geraldine Vermillion of Pavillion, Wy, and Lois Wagner of Riverton, Wy; 19 grandchildren, 55 great­grandchildren; 17 great-great­grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Hutchison of Corning.
Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church at Riverton where she had been a member.

Adrian Baker, age 28, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Monday, October 23, 2000, at his home in Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 27,2000, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa, with Reverend Richard Iske officiating. Visitation with the family was held from 7:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 26, 2000, at the funeral home. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. A memorial will be established. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Adrian Thomas Baker was born March 3, 1972, in Oakland, California, the son of Vunita Baker. He was a graduate of Clarinda High School.
Survivors include his mother Vunita Vieregge of Clarinda, Iowa, sister, Allison J. Newell of Oakland, California, brother, Antonio D. Aranda, Clarinda, Iowa, sister, Erica M. Aranda of Clarinda, Iowa, brother, Michael B. Vieregge of Clarinda, Iowa, grandmother, Charlene Baker of Des Moines, Iowa, two nephews and one niece. Other local relatives surviving are his great aunts Darlene Washington and Bertha Baker, who helped raised Adrian. Preceding him in death was his grandfather, Gerald Baker.

Adrian Thomas Baker of Clarinda went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 23, 2000. Adrian was born March 3, 1972. He is survived by his mother Vunita Vieregge, sisters Alison Newell of Oakland, California; Erica Aranda of Clarinda,  brothers Antonio Aranda and Michael Viereasre both of Clarinda, grandmother Charlene Baker of Des Moines. Several aunts, cousins and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Gerald Baker. Services are pending at Walker-Merrick Funeral home. Internment will be at the Clarinda Cemetery

Bollinger, Mable A. - Little Mable A., the two months old baby girl of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Bollinger, died on Wednesday evening at seven o'clock. The little one had been frail from birth and the mother is still unable to be up. Short services were held at the home Thursday afternoon and burial at the Elmwood cemetery. Davis, Janet E. Ewing - Janet E. Davis died Friday in peace with the Lord by her side at a residential care home in Phoenix, Arizona. Rejoice, because great is your reward in heaven!
Janet was born November 22, 1915, in Wichita, KS to James and Edna Ewing. The Ewings moved to the Brookside area of Kansas City during Janet's childhood. She attended Southwest High School and graduated from Baker University. Janet was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, the Women's City Club and the 2nd Presbyterian Church. Janet lived in Kansas City most of her life. She raised 2 children while residing in Prairie Village and working at an investment firm.
She was married to Charles A. Davis for 13 years, before his death in 1981.
Janet was a loving person of dignity and grace. Her absence will be missed by all that knew her. Janet leaves her daughter, Farell and son-in law William Smith of Phoenix, Arizona, son James Wine of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Step daughter, Robyn Smith of Oklahoma City, OK, Grandson Doug and daughter-in-law Karen Smith of Denver, CO, Grandsons Jeff and Kyle Wine of Lee's Summit, MO and great granddaughter Madeline Smith.

Graveside services were held Sunday, October 22, 2000, at the Villisca Cemetery, with Rev. Sandra Wainwright officiating. Wolfe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Doris Lucille Crain Davison, 73, passed away Monday, August 7 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.  
She was born near Hepburn, la, on September 25, 1915 to James Franklin Crain and Anna Mae Beavers Crain. She attended the Hepburn and Sullivan Grade Schools, Clarinda High School and graduated from Tarkio, Mo. High School in 1933.
In 1936 she married Gilbert Boyer of Burlington Junction, Mo. and was engaged in farming. They had one child, James Ray, who died in infancy.
In 1950 she married Jesse Davison of St. Joseph, Mo. To this union were three children: Mrs. Elmer (Marcia) Vespestad, Slater, la; Kenneth Davison, Denver, Co; and Mrs. Brian (Gwyneth) Reed, Guymon, Ok. Doris worked for many as a retail clerk then later as a switchboard operator at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute, retiring in 1981.

Survivors include her three children, eight grandchildren, one sister, Dorothy Currie, of Tarkio, Mo, two brothers, Charles Crain, Kansas City, Ks and James G. Crain, Clarinda, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one infant son, three sisters, and one brother.
She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Circle 8 Square Dance Club of Clarinda.
Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at Trinity Presbyterian Church with Rev. Charles Bulger officiating.

Burial was in Clarinda Cemetery with Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in charge of arrangements

Memorials may be directed to Des Moines Mercy Hospital, 8th floor Oncology Department.

Mr. Loren E. Dunn, 77 of 2313 Central Avenue died Tuesday, October 17, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney where he had been a patient for the past week.
He was born January 9, 1923 in Tennville, Iowa to Augustus A. and Minnie M. (Devine) Dunn. He grew up and attended school in Villisca, Iowa.
He was a veteran of WWII entering the U.S. Army in 1943 where he served until 1946. He married Laura
Overman July 11, 1947 in Iowa. He farmed in the Villisca area until moving to San Diego, CA in 1952 and worked for Teledyne-Ryan. He moved back to Nebraska and lived in York until moving to Kearney in 1985. He worked as a Security Guard at Eaton Manufacturing and was currently working as a Security Guard at IGA. He enjoyed Big Band music and traveling.
Surviving relatives include: Son, Gayle Dunn of Axtell, Nebraska, Daughters, Linda Stein of Villisca, Iowa and Marcia Vais of Anita, Iowa, Brother, Roland "Rollie" Dunn of Kearney, Sister, Katherine Kallos of Kansas City, MO, 9 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife, 2 sisters and 3 brothers.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2000 at noon at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney. Rev. Ron Harris will officiate. Graveside services and burial will be in the Arlington Cemetery at Villisca, Iowa at 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice. Rev. Robert Beard, officiating, Wolfe Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements. Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

Hancock, Jane Berry - Jane Berry was born in the year 1829 at Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and departed this life at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Gamble November 4, 1919, in her ninetieth year.
She was married in 1857 to Samuel Hancock, who died in Melbourne Australia.   She with her three children made their home with her father until  his death, after which she moved to Aberdeen.   In the fall of 1881. she with her youngest daughter, came to this country with her brother, the late George Berry, of Clarinda, Iowa.   She made her home at College Springs for several years then removing to Clarinda, Iowa she resided with her brother, Geo. Berry and wife, helping care for both of them  during  their  illness.    After their death she has since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Henderson, of Coin, Iowa. Besides this daughter she leaves to mourn the loss of mother, Mrs. Joseph Barr of Liberty, Nebr., and a son Joseph Hancock, of London, England. She also leaves three granddaughters and  five  grandsons,  besides other relatives in this country.
She also leaves a host of friends for every one loved Aunty Hancock.
She was a staunch member of the Free Kirk of Scotland and transfered her membership to the United
Presbyterian church and was a faithfnl member until her death for she loved her Church, her Bible and her Home.
She was a woman of rich Christain experience kind thoughful and loving.   Faith in the Crucified One was her hope of eternal life and, she was anxious that others might have a like faith and assurance that they too might enjoy peace with God thru the atoning work of Jesus Christ. Her whole  life was a witness to Christ's saving power and the last service rendered was to present his claims to those about her.
On Wednesday  before  she died was afflcted with a stroke of paralysis after which she was not able to converse with her friends but was thought to be conscious part of the time at least, until finally  she was called up higher.    Those who knew her mourn her departure but they do not mourn as those who have no hope.   "For if in them Jesus died and rose again even so with them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him."
The funeral services were held in the United Presbyterian church, her pastor, Rev. Wm. Story, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. R. E. Harvey of the M. E. church, and Rev. W. C. Williamson, D. D., of Clarinda each bearing testimony of the beautiful life that come to a close. Interment was in the Elmwood Cemetery. Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at the Nelson-Boylan Chapel in Red Oak for Helen Marie Hardee, 70, of Red Oak.

She died Aug. 7, 1989, at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha. She was born Jan. 20, 1919 in Taylor County to Robert and Florence Garner Hamilton.
She married Truman Marion Hardee April 4, 1944 at Clarinda. Hardee lived in New Market and Clarinda for a period of time, and has resided in Red Oak for the past 40 years. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Rev. Clem Keyes, a former Clarindan, being in charge of the service. Burial was at the Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak.
Survivors include her husband Truman of Red Oak, son Duane of Red Oak, daughters, Elaine Meads of Red Oak and Loraine Ross of Des Moines; and seven grandchildren.

Harris, Rachel Elma Archer - Rachel Elma  Archer  was  born at Waynesville,  Ohio,  Feb.   8,   1853, and departed this life at her home in College Springs, Iowa, Sept. 25, 1919. She was married to Martin L.  Harris at Bardolph, Ill., May 21, 1874, later moving to Iowa.   Mr. Harris preceded his wife in death March 20, 1911.   To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Harris was born five daughters and one son, who survive —Mrs.   Alta   Heumphreus,   Clearmont, Mo., Mrs. Winifred  Palmer  of Coin, la., Mrs. Anna Dow of St. Joseph, Mo., Frank of Rupert, Idaho, and Mrs. Halllie Sollars of College Springs. Harris, Sarah Ann Skinner - Mrs. Grant Harris
Sarah Ann Skinner, daughter of David and Katherine Skinner, was born in Koscinsko county, Indiana, July 25, 1862, and died at Clarinda, Iowa, March 19, 1919. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1864, and has since resided in this state. She was united to U. G. Harris, at Clarinda December 31, 1885. To this union were born four children, Mrs. John Dowdell of Creston, Mrs. Rusk Phillips of Clarinda, Calvin B. of Council Bluffs, and Elmer Finley, who preceded the mother into the beyond, ''She united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1881, afterwards uniting with the Christian church of Clarinda, being a member of that church at the time of her death. Besides the family Mrs. Harris leaves two sisters, Mrs. Dora Waterman and Mrs. Ross Morris of Clarinda, and a brother, John H. Skinner of Colorado Springs,
Colo., and many warm  friends to mourn their loss.
The funeral was held at the home Friday afternoon, March 21. In tha absence of the pastor of the Christian church, Rev. R. C. Snodgrass, Rev. M. M. Cable of the M. E. church conducted the services. Interment was made in the Clarinda cemetery. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Mar 27, 1919

Mrs. U. G. Harris died at her home in this city Wednesday, March 19, 1919, after a long illness. The funeral was held from the family home Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. M. M. Cable. Hymns were sung by a mixed quartette consisting of Mrs. H. C. Hawley, Mrs. J. G. Scroggs, A. F. Galloway and Charles Keeran. Interment was in Clarinda cemetery. Herzberg, Anna Amelia - Little Anna Amelia Herzberg, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Herzberg, was laid to rest in Summit cemetery north of Yorktown Sunday afternoon, Rev. C. H. Jaebker the pastor of Immunuel Lutheran Church conducting the services. The child was just past a month in age, death being due to bronchial pneumonia. F. Hitchcock, that mourn for one who was in every worthy of our respect, and that we lament the loss of a comrade, that ever ready to give a friendly greeting to a fellow soldier, giving the hand of aid, the voice of sympathy especially to those that were sick" and distressed, generous, kind, loyal, a good man, and what more can we say. Hitchcock, W.'s DAUGHTER - The terrible news comes from Blanchard that the little daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Hitchcock, aged about two years, met an awful death the fore part of last week. It seems that while the mother was absent from the house a few minutes the little one's clothes caught fire. A young brother ran to call his mama, and the girl following, the flames were increased in the open air. A mail carrier chanced to be passing and hastening to the child wrapped his overcoat around it and extinguished the fire, but it was found her person was badly seered and the flesh fell from the arms. A physician was at once called, but the little sufferer was beyond all pain in a few hours after. Hodgens, Mary Ellen Hartman - Mary Ellen (Hartman) Hodgens was born at Beallsville, Wash. Co., P., April 4, 1843, and died at her home in Braddyville, la., Aug. 19,1919, aged 76 years, 3 months and 25 days, having been a resident of Page County for 44 years.   
She was united in marriage to Wm. Leland Hodgens of Washington Co., Pa.. Nov. 30, 1865. To them were born four children, one of whom died in infancy. Her husband died four years ago. Two of her children, William Hodgens of Nebraska City and Mrs. Myra Root of Cheyenne, Wyo., were present at the time of her death. Mrs. Root, who is a trained nurse in a hospital in Cheyenne, faithfully cared for her mother during her last illness.
Sister Hodgens has heen a member of the M. E. Church since her youth.

Hodges, Elizabeth Willey - Elizabeth Willey was born in Warren county, Ohio May 22, 1852 and departed this life April 13, 1919, aged 66 years, 10 months and 21 days.
Her parents moved to Illinois when she was a girl and it was in that state that she was married to Daniel Hodges, Nov. 5, 1870.
To this union were born 4 children, Elsie who lived but 16 months, Lee 18 years. The living children are Ira and Lina E.
Sister Hodges united with the Baptist church in Illinois in 1879, and moved with her husband to Nodaway county in 1883 and to their farm between Braddyville, Iowa, and Clearmont, Mo., in 1884, where they have since resided.
While she for some time has not been in the best of health, yet her sudden passing came as a surprise to here friends as well as to her husband and the children. She was taken to a Sanitarium, where she was visiting her daughter and every possible care was given her.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist church at Clearmont, conducted by R. R. Watts, where a large concourse of people had met to pay their last respects for the departed. The remains were take to the Burch cemetery east of Braddyville for interment. Mrs. Hodge was known by a large number of people in and around Braddyville, where she had lived for 35 years. Hollis, Edward Jr

Edward Hollis Jr., was born in Valley township, Page county, Iowa and died in St. Anthony, Ida., at the age of 54 years 4 months and 17 days. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Murphy Hollis and was the youngest of a family of eight children. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him to the great beyond.   Two brothers, William Hollis of Burlington Junction, Mo., and Samuel Hollis of Nodaway, lowa, and sister, Mrs. George Sinn of this city, survive.   The late Mr. Hollis was married Feb. 26, 1891, to Miss Florence M. Loy, who survives him. He was a member of the Union church of St. Anthony, Ida. Mr. and Mrs. Hollis left Page county about nineteen years ago.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the North Grove church, conducted by Rev. J. M. Williams of Clarinda. A quartette from Clarinda  rendered  excellent music. Edward Hollis, Jr. Funeral services for Edward Hollis. Jr., who died October 18, at St. Anthony, Idaho, were held Sunday afternoon at the North Grove church. Burial was in the North Grove Cemetery.
The death of Mr. Hollis was due to heart failure. He was 54 years of age. Besides a loving wife, Mr Hollis is survived by two brothers and one sister, the latter being Mrs. George Sinn of this city. He was united in marriage with Miss Florence M. Loy, Feb. 26, 1891. Mr. Hollis lived in this community for many years as a farmer, until about 19 years ago when he and his wife moved to Idaho. Horton, John Thomas - The funeral of John Thomas Horton, who passed away at his home in this city, Sunday, Sept. 28, 1919, was held at his home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. R. C. Snodgrass. The burial was in Clarinda cemetery. The following obituary has been given The Journal for publication:
John Thomas Horton was born April 5, 1883, at Dallas Center, Taylor county, Iowa, and passed out of this life at his home in Clarinda, Iowa, Sept. 28, 1919, age 36 years 5 month and 23 days. Brother Horton lived the most of his life in this community, giving back to it in a straightforward life his debt to the fruitful influences of the community which contributed to the joy of his living. He leaves to mourn his loss, a mother, Mrs. Mary Horton, a wife, Mrs. Effie Horton; and besides these, two sisters and one brother: Mrs. Mary Walker, Clarinda, Mrs. Kate Corrum, Kansas City and Raymond Horton of this city. He leaves also two step sons, Raymond and Loren.
Brother Horton was a member of the Odd Fellow fraternity, thus contributing what he could to the spirit of mutual helpfulness in the world. Some time ago he accepted Jesus as his Savior, having been baptized by the pastor of the Christian church.
In this profession of faith so beautifully made he passed on to the other world carrying with him the hope of

John Thomas Horton was born April 5, 1883, and died Sunday, Sept. 28, at 5 a. m. at his home on east Main street, from tuberculosis. He was the son of Matthew and Mary Horton. He is survived by his wife, one brother, and his mother. He has no children. He was a barber by trade, but has not had a shop for several years on account of his failing health. Hovendale, Velma - Velma, the 16 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs I K Hovendale, living east of town, died at her home on Wednesday morning of the Spanish influenza, after a short illness. She was attending school in College Springs and came home on Friday night slightly ill. A short funeral service was held at the home on Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev C.M. Hutchings, Mildred -
Death invaded the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vete Hutchings in Clarinda, Monday afternoon, Sept. 29, 1919, and took their little daughter, Mildred Hutchings. She died of pneumonia, after an illness in which she was cared for in the most tender and solicitious manner by relatives and physician. She was born in Clarinda Oct. 19, 1915, and was nearly four years of age at the time of her death. She was a very bright little girl and a delight in her home. Her affection for her little brother Lowell, her elder, was remarkable. While she was living the brother and sister were almost inseparable. Mildred looking up to Lowell and wanting to go everywhere he was. Besides the surviving parents and the brother Lowell, among other surviving relatives are the grandmother, Mrs. Will O. Hutchings, and grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Endsley. The funeral takes place at the home at o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. R. C. Snodgrass, and interment will be in Birchwood cemetery. Hutson, James - The funeral of James Hutson who passed away at his home northeast of Hawleyville last Saturday, was held day at two o'clock at the M. E. Church in Hawleyville, Rev. Field, pastor of the Baptist Church in New Market, officiating. Mr. Hutson was one of the oldest settlers of this community. He had been sick for some time, suffering from cancer of the face. Graveside services for Harold K. Jett, 78, of Clarinda will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Hawleyville cemetery with Rev. S. Bruce Willson officiating. Jett died August 5, 1989, at the Municipal Hospital.

He was born July 24, 1911 in Iowa, the son of James Ernest and Aurel Belle Hollingsworth Jett. He had worked at local Clarinda hotels and had been a resident of Bethesda Care Center before entering the hospital.

Survivors include a son, Keith Jett, Shenandoah, and daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Joan) Briggs  of Tallahassee, Fl. Brothers are J.D. Jett, W. Covina, Ca, and Garnett Jett, Shreveport, La. Burial  will  be  in Hawleyville  cemetery  with Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials will be used toward the purchase of a grave marker.

Funeral services for Addie Larson, 93, of the Bethesda community will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bethesda Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Stadie officiating. Visitation is to be Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.
Mrs. Larson died Sunday evening at the Stanton Care Center where she had lived for the past seven years. She was born Oct. 6, 1895 at Warrensburg, Mo, the daughter of Harry and Jennie Wood Brownlee. She taught at North Page and Fairview Schools before marrying Albert Larson Feb. 24,1921. They lived on the same farm one half mile west of Bethesda all of their married lives. He died July 16,1977.
Mrs. Larson had been an active member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church and other community organizations.
Survivors include two children, Kenneth Larson of rural Clarinda and Mrs. Ivan (Reva) Falk of Tucson, Az. There are four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Brothers are Glenn Brownlee of Villisca and Dean Brownlee of Cheyenne, Wy, and one sister is Dorothy Schantz Malmberg of Red Oak. 
She was preceded in death by parents, husband, brothers, Estey and James Brownlee, and sister, Myrtle Royer.
Burial will be in Bethesda cemetery. Memorials are to be directed to Bethesda Lutheran.

McCreight, Paul Nelson - A graveside service was held at Clarinda Cemetery Wednesday for Paul Nelson McCreight, 30, of Overland Park, Kan. Mr McCreight became ill with a heart condition March 8 and died March 13 at St Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.
A native of Clarinda, Mr McCreight was son of the late Paul N McCreight and the former Fae Stoops. Mr and Mrs D O McCreight are grandparents.
The funeral was held Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, conducted by his pastor, the Rev Charles Spiney. Mr McCreight was deacon of the church.
He leaves his wife Sandra and two daughters Paula and Laurie; his mother, Mrs Fae Underhill of Kansas City; and a brother Ronald at Houston, Tex. Mr McCreight was sales representative for Hallmark Cards.
Fifty friends of the family drove from Kansas City for the service here Wednesday. Other relatives and friends came from Evergreen, Colo, Blockton, Des Moines and Council Bluffs.

Jennie McKinnon, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Dunham, was born born Dec 13, 1878 in Sabula, Iowa. She was married to Clyde McKinnon, Oct 27, 1914 at Clarinda. He died in 1940. She was employed at the Mental Health Institute for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and two sisters.
She was a member of the Christian Church.
She is survived by one sister, Mrs Perry Douthit of Clarinda, a sister-in-law, Thelma Dunham of Arlington, Va, two nieces, Jean Beedles of Onawa, Iowa, and Margaret Dunlap of Arcadia, Colo, and one nephew, Ben Dunham of Onawa, Iowa.
Memorial services were held Aug 19 at the Lavelle Funeral Home with Rev John Beebout of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Mrs Leslie Forbes was soloist with Mrs Ronald Perry at the organ. Casket bearers were Phillip Spunaugle, Carl Gillespie, Earl McCowan, Ralph Lyman, Ernest Pearson and Earl Warner. Burial was in the Clarinda cemetery.

COUNTRYSIDE (Special)—Word was received by relatives here, Mrs Lila Chesnut, Mrs Sid Woldruff, and Ira Chesnut, Friday morning of the sudden passing of Frank Mudd of Detroit, Mich, at his home. The cause of death was a heart attack. Frank was well known, in Clarinda having visited in that city often when his father, the late Rev J F Mudd, resided for many years in the district elder's parsonage of the Free Methodist church. Frank Mudd was forty-five years.of age. Burial was held at Detroit Sunday. He leaves his wife arid two children, one brother, Chester Mudd, in California, and Miss Eula Mudd, only sister, at Winona Lake, Ind.

Michael W. Naughton, 55, a board of director member at Citizen's State Bank, passed away unexpectedly July 24 1989 in Omaha.
Naughton was also a partner with the accounting firm of Deliotte, Haskins, and Sells; an officer of Panhandle Aviation, Inc.; a board director at Farmers Savings Bank in Fremont, Ne.; Oakland State
Bank; Humboldt Trust and Savings Bank. He was a long time business associate and friend of the Duncan family, originally from Clarinda.

Funeral services were conducted July 28 at St. Robert's Church in Omaha. Naughton is survived by his wife Betty of Omaha and eight children.

Paul H. Otte, 95, of rural Braddyville died July 31, 1989, at Bethesda Care Center, where he had lived since 1982.

He was bom May 16,1894, in Page County, the son of Frank and Henrietta Wehrkamp Otte. On March 14, 1918, he was married to Clara Driftmier, who preceded him in death Feb 2, 1988. Mr and Mrs Otte had farmed in the rural Braddyville area.

Survivors include his son, Darrel Otte of Crystal Lake, Ill, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, wife, infant son, two rothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. John Lutheran Church, with Rev. David Renfro officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda cemetery with Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Salber, Fred - Fred Salber died Sunday at the Glenwood Institution for the Feeble Minded, after terrible  suffering from  convulsions.   He was 24 years old and had been an invalid all his life. Sanborn, Dr. - The Sidney Herald announces the death of Dr. Sanborn last weak at Springfield, Mass , where he had resided the past ten years. Old settlers here will remember the Doctor as a regular visitor here from Sidney as a dentist. He was nearly 81 years of age. His remains were brought back to Sidney. Sanger, Charles Miles - Charles Miles Sanger, father of Will M. Sanger, of this city, died at his home in Paxton, Ill., last Sunday afternoon at 2:30. He would have been 70 years old had he lived until next Monday.   His death was caused by a cold he contracted the fore part of last week, which rapidly developed into pleurisy. He leaves  a wife, a son and a sister, besides his mother, to mourn his death. Mr. Sanger received a letter Saturday stating that it was no use to come home, as his father was unconscious and would not recognize him, and Monday he received a telegram announcing his death. Laura Belle Westfall was born in Sioux City, August 21, 1873, and passed away July 16th, 1921, at the home of her husband, A. H. Shrimpton, the Singer Sewing Machine man, living west of New Market. At the time of her marriage to Mr. Shrimpton her home was in Beloit, Kans., they being married in 1893 at Concordia, Kans. They moved to Page County, having lived In Clarinda twenty-six years ago, later moving to the farm on which she resided at the time of her death. A year ago Mr. and Mrs. Shrimpton conducted the Burlington Hotel.
Mrs. Shrimpton leaves her husband, six children, one child dying in infancy, and three brothers, Ralph Westfall of New Market, Charley Westfall of Colorado and a brother in Idio, Wash. Slump, Eliza
Mrs. Eliza Slump passed away Monday evening, April 18th, at her home on E. Clark Street, at the age of 72 years and 11 days. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning from Harmon's Funeral Home, conducted by the Christian minister, Rev. J. A. Burns, the remains being then taken on the train to Henderson, la., for interment.
Eliza Abigail Jones was born at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, April 7th, 1849. In the year 1855 she accompanied her parents to Illinois. Her father died when the girl was 10 years of age, leaving her to have the responsibility of her younger brothers and sisters. In 1867 she was married to Edward Slump, being then in her fifteenth year. For a time the family lived in Warren County, la., then in Mills County, near Henderson. Seven children are living, Mrs. Effie Bell of near Guss, Charles of Henderson, Mrs. Allie Minett of Brighton, Colo., Mrs. Dora Fielder of Hallenburg, Kans., Mrs. Fielder of near Villisca, Elza Slump of Clarinda and Clyde Slump of near Villisca. Twenty-two grand children and two great-grandchildren are living, also one brother, David Jones of Murray, la. Steer, Grace Elizabeth - Grace Elizabeth Steer, youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Steer was born at Missouri Valley, Iowa, February 28, 1917 and passed away after two weeks' serious illness at her home August 26, 1921, aged 4 years, 5 months and 28 days. On March 26, 1919, she was united in marriage with Adolf Steeve, She died March 31, 1921, having attained the age of 25 years 8 months and 12 days. She leaves to mourn her untimely decease her sorrowing husband, her parents, one brother, five sisters, her mother-in-law and many other relatives. The brother is George Sundermann, and the names of the sisters, Mrs. Albert Lambring of Seymour, Ind.; Mrs. D. B. Jensen of Breckenridge, Okla.; Mrs. H. C. Stevenson, Robert John
Mrs. Robert Stevenson has received the sad news of the death of her son, Robert John Stevenson, who died at Los Angeles, Calif., Nov. 17, 1921, from cancer of the stomach.
Mr. Stevenson had been in poor health since last summer, but did not know of his serious condition until the physicians told him an operation would be necessary. Upon further examination it was found that an operation would not save his life.
Mr. Stevenson will be remembered by many as a former resident of Page county, he having been born on the old homestead two miles southeast of Clarinda, Oct. 28, 1868, and was in his fifty-fourth year. Stitt, Sarah Nancy Payton
Sarah Nancy Payton was born at Muncie, Ind., Sept. 14, 1846, and came to Henry county, Ill., with her parents in 1854, where she grew to young womanhood. On Nov. 1st, 1864, she was united in marriage to W. D. Stitt and lived near Woodhill, Ill., until 1870, when they came to Page county and located on a farm near College Springs. She and her husband were among the comparatively early settlers in Page Co. and contributed a real service in building up everything that was for the good of the community.
Their home was ever open to any and every one in need of a friendly hand, and many a stranger and wayfarer enjoyed their hospitality, always graciously and generously given. Ministers of all creeds found a hearty welcome in their home, as well as substantial support in the work in which these pioneer ministers were interested, for religion was a force and factor in their life, and many lives were richer because of the influence and example of these good people.

Five sons and three daughters survive: D. D. Stitt Clarinda; C. M. Stitt, Fort Morgan, Colo.; Artie Henniger, Yorktown; Rev. S. F. Stitt, Detroit, Mich.; H. E. Stitt, Boston, Mass.; Emma Borthwick, Coin, and Inez Miller, Hepburn, and William P. Stitt, Clarinda.

Funeral services were held at the home of her son, D. D. Stitt, 300 Eighteenth street, at 9:30 Tuesday, and at 1 o'clock from the Presbyterian church at Yorktown. Interment was in Summit cemetery.

Alma Sunderman, age 90, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2000, at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 25, 2000, at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Reverend Ken Lampe officiating. There was visitation with the family 7:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 24, 2000, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial was in Summit Cemetery near Yorktown, Iowa. Memorials mav be directed to the Lutheran Hour, Clarinda Lutheran School, or to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Clarinda, Iowa. Alma was born February 7, 1910, to William H. Meier and Rosa Herzberg Meier at home in Nodaway Township, Page County, Iowa. She was baptized on February 20, 1910, in her parent's home by Pastor W.J. Horn. She attended Vienna Country School and then St. Paul's Lutheran School in Yorktown, Iowa. Her confirmation was held on April 13, 1924, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Yorktown, Iowa, by Pastor C.E. Schroeder.
On August 25, 1932, she was married to August Buesing at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Yorktown, Iowa. To this union seven children were born, Alberta (Mrs. Jack) Smith of Clarinda, Iowa, Arthur Buesing (wife LaRayne) of Fairmont, Minnesota, Norman Buesing (wife Farah) of Kearney, Nebraska, Donald Buesing (wife Connie) of Clarinda, Iowa, Ruth Meether, deceased, Heidi (Mrs. Denny) Bartz of Villisca, Iowa, and David Buesing (wife Kendi) of Clarinda, Iowa. August died August 11, 1965. September 26, 1971, she married Hubert Sunderman. Step­daughters are Deloris (Mrs. Vic) Fruedenburg, Orlando, Florida, Mildred (Mrs. Curt) Wolf anger of Medina, Illinois, and Myra (Mrs. Alfred) Rodemann of Maitland, Florida. Hubert died August 9,1989.
Alma is survived by six children, three step children, 18 grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and 25 step great grandchildren, sister,   Ester Smiley of Clarinda, Iowa, brothers, Rudolf Meier of Clarinda, Iowa, Lorenz Meier of Coin, Iowa, nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands, daughter, Ruth Meether, son-in-law, John Meether, grandchildren, Shirley Smith, Alan Buesing, one step grandchild,   Douglas Rodeman, great grandchild, Heather Fisher and brother Arnold Meier.

Sunderman, Fred Roll of the Silent
Sunderman Fred - Fred Sunderman, one of the pioneer settlers of Page County, died last Saturday morning at 9:30, at his home in Douglas Township. He had the rheumatism for a number of years, and about three years ago was afflicted with it in both of his limbs, making it impossible to get around without help. But he bore his cross with great patience. About a week and a half before his death indigestion set in, this being the immediate cause for his death.

The deceased was born in Hanover, Germany May 10th 1838, and reached the age of 83 years and 4 months. When about two years of age his parents, Casper and Charlotte (Goecker) Sunderman came to this country and first located in Cincinnati, Ohio, but after a brief period there, made their way to Jackson County, Ind., entering a tract of timberland, on which his father made a small clearing and built a log cabin.

He was married April 3rd, 1862, to Louisa Meonning, also of Jackson County, who survives him. They have lived fifty years at the home they first purchased. This union was blessed with nine children. Three having died in infancy, six children survive him, their names being, H. F. Sunderman, L. J. Sunderman, Ed Sunderman, Mrs. H. D. Wagoner, Joe Sunderman, and Mrs. Herman Wagoner. Twenty-three grandchildren and one great grandchild all were able to attend the funeral.

The funeral services were held Monday afternoon, Sept. 12th, at 2 P. M., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Israel, services being conducted both in English and German. The text was chosen from the 116th Psalm, 15th verse, which reads as follows: "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints". The pallbearers were his four sons and two son-in-laws. Death has removed a lifelong esteemed citizen from among the living in Page county, Fred Sunderman of Douglas township, who was well known in Clarinda as well as elsewhere in this county, and whom to know was to respect. An industrious, successful farmer, he led an active life until ill health compelled him to give up his work. He was one of the founders of Emanuel Lutheran church in Nodaway township, which was established over fifty years ago, and when he passed away there was no survivor of the founding of that church left. He was a trustee of the church for nine years. In Douglas township public affairs he was township trustee for some twelve or fifteen years. He also for a long time was a stockholder and director in the Clarinda National bank.
The following particulars concerning him have been furnished The Journal for publication:

Fred Sunderman.
Death   has   removed   a lifelong esteemed citizen from among the living in Page county, Fred Sunderman of Douglas township, who was well known in Clarinda as well as else where in this county, and whom to know was to respect.  An industrious, successful farmer, he led an active; life until ill health compelled him to give up his work.   He was one of the founders of Emanuel Lutheran church in Nodaway township,   which  was established over fifty years ago, and when he passed away there was no survivor of the founding of that church left.   He was a trustee of the church for nine years.   In Douglas township public affairs he was township trustee for some twelve or fifteen years. He also for a long time was a stockholder, and director in the Clarinda National bank.
The following particulars concerning him have been furnished The Journal for publication:
Fred Sunderman, one of the pioneer settlers of Page county, died last Saturday morning at 9:30 at the home in Douglas township. He had rheumatism for a number of years and about three years ago was afflicted with it in both of his limbs, which made it impossible for him to get around without help, but he bore his cross with great patience.  About one and one-half weeks before his death indigestion set in, which was the immediate cause of his death.  The deceased was born in Hanover, Germany, on the 10th day of May, 1838, and reached the age of 83 years and 4 months.  When about 2 years of age his parents, Casper and Charlotte (Goecker) Sunderman, came to   this country and first located in Cincinnati, Ohio, but after a brief period spent there they made their way to Jackson county, Ind., and entered a tract of timber land on which his father made a small clearing and built a log cabin.

He was married April 3, 1862, to Louisa Moenning, also of Jackson county, who still survives him. They have lived fifty-six years at the home they first purchased in Page county. This union was blessed with nine children, three having died in infancy. Six children survive him: H. F. Sunderman, L J. Sunderman, Ed Sunderman, Mrs. H. D. Wagoner, Joe Sunderman and Mrs. Herman Wagoner. There also survive twenty-three grandchildren and one grandchild, all being able to attend the funeral. Funeral services for Hubert H. Sunderman, 89, of Clarinda, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Ken Lampe officiating.
Visitation will be at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home from 7-8 p.m. Friday evening.
Mr. Sunderman died early Wednesday, August 9, 1989, Municipal Hospital where he had been admitted the evening before.
He was born September 1, 1899, in Page County, the son of H. F. and Anna Waggoner Sunderman.
Mr. Sunderman was a farmer and had lived in Clarinda since 1983.
On Sept. 26, 1971 he was married to Alma Meier Buesing who survives.
He is survived by his wife,, Alma, of the home and three daughters,    Mrs. Victor. (Deloris)  Freudenburg, Orlando, Fl; Mrs. Curt (Mildred) Wolfanger, Medinah, Il; Mrs. Alfred   (Myra)   Rodemann, Maitland, Fl.    Step-children are Mrs. Jack (Alberta) Smith, Clarinda;  Arthur Buesing, Fairmont, Mn; Norman Buesing, Kearney, Ne; Donald Buesing, Clarinda; Mrs. John (Ruth) Meether, Kearney, Ne; Heidi Hoyt, Clarinda; and David Buesing, Clarinda.  There are 10 grandchildren,  7 great­grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren and  7 step-great­grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents, first wife, Ella, three brothers, one grandson, one step-grandson, one step-granddaughter, and one step-great-granddaughter.
Burial will be in Immanuel Cemetery.

Swanson, Oscar's BABY - Death of Baby at Essex. Essex Independent, Aug. 22: Just as the funeral cortege of Raymond Hagglund arrived at the Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon and the people had gotten seated, a messenger came with the sad news of the death of the baby of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Swanson that was so frightfully scalded Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. John Hagglund, grandparents of the little one, with their children were in attendance at the funeral of Raymond Hagglund, their nephew, and were called from the church to go at once to the home. Swisher, Albert - Albert Swisher of Omaha, a brother of Mrs. John Wooten of Clarinda, died suddenly in Omaha, Thursday afternoon, Nov. 24, 1921. Mr. Swisher had attended a fire, and it is thought the excitement caused his death which occurred about an hour after coming home from the fire. Mrs. Wooten and sons, Will and Charley, drove to Tabor Friday to the home of Newton Swisher, another brother of Mrs. Wooten. From there Mr. Swisher and Will and Charley Wooten went on to Omaha, where they went to the home of the deceased. They returned to their homes the next day. Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Charley Wooten, Mrs. John Wooten and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Fort went to Sidney, where the funeral of Albert Swisher was held at 1 o'clock. Burial was at Sidney. Swisher, Albert - Mrs. Sarah Wooten received word Friday morning of the death of her brother, Albert Swisher at Omaha. He had gone to a fire about 12 o'clock just a few blocks from his home. One of the fireman dropped about forty feet and was killed two feet from where he stood. This is thought to have excited him as he died just a few minutes after reaching home of heart failure.
Mrs. Wooten with her sons Charlie and William drove to Tabor, Iowa and was there joined by her brother Newton Swisher, who accompanied them to Omaha. The remains was shipped to Sidney, Iowa to be buried by the side of his mother. He is survived by his wife Maude Swisher, his sister Mrs. Sarah Wooten and brother Newton of Tabor, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wooten, Mr. and Mrs. H. O. VanFossen, Arthur and Harvey - TheEd Van Fossen home at Adrain, Mo., was greatly saddened by the death of two sons, Arthur, and Harvey, who died in February. Arthur, the older of the two boys, died Monday, Feb. 24, of influenza, at the age of 18 years, 5 months and 24 days.  The funeral services were held at the Crescent Hill cemetery, Wednesday, Feb. 26, and it was while the funeral services were being held that the younger boy died.   Harvey Van Fossen was 15 years, 8 months and 16 days old.   He was born near College Springs, Iowa.  The funeral was held Thursday, Feb. 27, conducted by Rev. J. W. Needham of the Adrain Methodist church, who also conducted the other funeral.   Both boys were industrious, good boys,  who will be greatly missed by  the community. James Vinsant was born in eastern Virginia in the year 1820, and died at his home three and one-half miles northeast of Clarinda on May 6. 1903. aged 83 years. He moved with his parents while a child to Tennessee where he grew to manhood. His parents died while he was quite a small boy and he started out in life with but little means.
He was married to Elizabeth Douglas on October 15, 1845. In 1854 came to Iowa and to Page county and settled on the old home farm where he lived until the time of his death. He was the father of seven children. Milton V, of Nebraska township. Mesdames Emma and Anna Thompson of Clarinda, Mrs. H. G. Cunning of East River township. Frank and Nannie are still at home and Thomas died in December, 1887. His wife died in October, 1898.

Jas. Vinsant died May 6, 1903, at his home two and a half miles northeast of Clarinda, at the advanced age of 83 years. He had been in poor health for a few weeks but his death was a surprise to all. Mr Vincent was an old resident of this county, and a highly respected citizen. He was a Virginian by birth and possessed all the manly qualitites characteristic of the natives of that state. The funeral took place Friday at 10:30 am from the home, conducted by Rev IlgenFritz and his remains laid to rest in the city cemetery by the side of his aged wife. Mrs. John Weaver received a postal card, Friday, from Earl Voorhees, telling of the death of his father,

Edith Marie Wasson daughter of Ben Richardson and Mattie Bennett Richardson, was born June 23, 1905, in Clarke County, Iowa and died Friday, October 20, 2000 at the Villisca Good Samaritan Care Center, where she had been a resident since 1987.
Edith married Paul Wasson on August 10, 1940, in Maryville, Missouri, He preceded her in death on December 7, 1981.
She is survived by her brother Ben Richardson of Villisca, IA, a daughter in law Ruth Wasson of Council Bluffs, IA and many Nieces and Nephews.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul, brothers Ray and Earl and sisters Mildred Hendry and Beulah Simpson.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2000 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, with Pastor Albert Baker officiating. Burial was in the North Grove Cemetery, near Villisca, IA.

Graveside services were held Saturday in Des Moines for Lewis B. Welch, 81, brother of Darrell Welch of Clarinda. Lewis died Aug. 3,1989, at his home from cancer.
He was born Jan. 5, 1908, in Nebraska Township of Page County to Ben and Mary Meads Welch. He attended Liggitt School and moved to Des Moines in 1936. He was a parts manager for Port Huron Machinery until he retired in 1974 and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the Masons.
Survivors, in addition to his brother, included a daughter, Beverly Osborne of Phoenix, Az; a son, Kent of Des Moines; sisters, Maxine Lafave of Munising, Mi, Dorothy French of Ronan, Mt, and Lucille Johnson of Spanaway, Wa; brothers, Ralph of DeLand, Fl, and Jim of Modesto, Ca; four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; and three step-great­grandchildren.
Memorials are requested to Hospice of Central Iowa.
