Zachav, Katie Manerek - HOSPITAL PATIENT BURIED IN CLARINDA CEMETERY.
Mrs. Katie Zachav of Des Moines Leaves Twin Baby Girls Three Months of Age.

Father McGuiness came from Shenandoah Tuesday noon on a sorrowful errand, his object in coming being to conduct the burial services for Mrs. Katie Zachav, who died Sunday at the State hospital, and who was buried in Clarinda cemetery [sic, State Hospital Cemetery], her husband A. Zachav and brother, Joe Manerek of Des Moines being here to witness the ceremony. While awaiting arrival of the relatives the remains were taken to Pruitt's undertaking parlors. The funeral services were held in the chapel at the State hospital, attended by the sorrowing relatives and also by the nurses and attendants whose sympathy and love had been enlisted in this rather unusual case. Mrs. Zachav until her recent affliction which brought her to the Clarinda State hospital was queen of a happy home in Des Moines, her husband and brother being both employed with the Des Moines Clay Compound Co., which makes rool tiling. The men are experts at the work, being natives of Austria. The family are all of Slavish descent, the husband being a native of Austria. The mother who has just died was only 27 years of age, being born in Noldham, Germany. Her husband came to this country from Austria fourteen years ago, going to Chicago. Later came the Manarek family, including Joe and his sister Katie who has just died. She and Mr. Zachav were married, and a little son, now two years of age, came to gladden the home. Three months ago two little twin girls were born. Mrs. Zachav did not recover entirely from this ordeal, growing gradually weaker, until one night she lost her mind for a time, and after that had to be taken to the hospital in Des Moines, whence the physicians advised that she be brought to Clarinda. She had been here but a few days when death ended all. As the two men move from one factory to another, they felt that the Clarinda cemetery would be as beautiful and quiet a place as any they could take the loved one to, so she was buried here, and as the family are of the Roman Catholic faith, Father McGuiness was the one chosen to speak words of encouragement and consolation to sorrowing hearts. Before leaving home, in her moments of saneness, the mother frequently said to her husband, "after I am dead, what will you do with the two little girls?" That is the question which the father now has to contend with, having the babies during daytimes in the hands of a woman in Des Moines who was
formerly a nurse in the hospital and interested. The father is laboring in the tile factory earning $2.50 a day to keep the little family together. It is one of those sad happenings which occur frequently in the big buildings north of town, but which ordinarily we do not hear about here in Clarinda.
