Mrs. Emma Heber native of county

Mrs. Emma Heber, formerly Emma Steeve of Clarinda, died Sunday in a hospital at Los Angeles, Cal. While her illness of recent years had been serious, her final illness was only a few weeks and she was in the hospital 10 days.

Mrs. Heber was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Steeve [Lisette Hartstack], born in Page County. She left for California in 1927. Her husband, Henry Heber, died 11 years ago.

She has seven brothers and sisters who survive her. Mrs. Fred (Esther) Meyer, Edward Steeve, Hugo Steeve and Walter Steeve are of the local community. Robert Steeve is of Minnesota, Mrs. Frances Stedman of Fullerton, Cal, and Mrs. Lorena Paul of Mason City.  A brother, Otto Steeve, died three months ago.

She had retired from her active years as a trained nurse. She will be buried beside her late husband in Glendale, Cal.

The family is arranging for a memorial in her name with the American Cancer Society.

William Howard Loper, 88, of Villisca died Feb 13 at Colonial Manor in Corning following a long illness. He was director of the Clarinda PCA for many years.

Funeral services will be Friday, Feb 16 at 2 pm at Sutphen Funeral Home in Villisca.

Mrs. Opal Johnson burial at Harlan

Services for Mrs. Opal (Olie) Johnson, 76, mother of Mrs. Ruth L. Harper of Harlan, were held Feb 2 at the United Methodist Church in Audubon and burial was in the cemetery at Harlan.

Mrs. Johnson was an occasional visitor when Mrs. Harper lived in Clarinda. She was born at Linden, Ia, and death came to her Jan 31 at Audubon.

Her husband, Olie, survives her as do two children, Donald Holmes of Wellington, Mo, and Mrs. Harper at Harlan, five sisters and brothers, Iona Conrad and Maurice Runge of Spencer, [Jennie] Lucille Phipps of Oakland, Cal, Lloyd Thornburg of Florida and Herschel Thornburg of California; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A nephew, Dennis Thornburg, of Red Oak was reared as a son.

NEW MARKET - Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pratt [Essie Leona] received word of the death of Mrs. Pratt's brother, Bud [Eldred Hiram] Bankston Jan 24 at Salem, Ore. following a heart attack.

"Bud" was a former resident of New Market, graduated in 1927 from the New Market High School. He was the son of the late W. [illiam] H. [iram] and Edna [Meisenheimer] Bankston and he is survived by his wife, Leota [Grace Peckham]. His four sisters are Mrs. Jean Hughes, Mrs. Edith Johnson, Mrs. Pearl Zurcher of Foster, Ore, and Mrs. Ralph Pratt of New Market and brother Evan Bankston of Salem, Ore.

He was in the Marine Corp, during World War II, and was a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge.

Funeral services and interment were at Salem. Ore., Jan 27.

Fine resident of Siam area

Clem Fine, 82, lifetime farmer and implement dealer in the Siam vicinity, died this Monday at 9:30 am of a heart attack, resulting from an illness which has caused him to be in the Clarinda Municipal Hospital for a week.

Services will be arranged through Swanson Funeral Home at Hopkins.

Fine was born on the farm within a quarter of a mile of his home, and his entire life has been in the Siam community.

He has two sons, Harold and Roy, and two daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Irene) Vardaman and Mrs. Lester (Doris) Carter, the latter of Maitland, Mo. Roy is in the veterans hospital at Omaha. Mrs. Fine died several years ago.

Effie Thompson services Sunday

Funeral services for Effie Thompson, 80, of Clarinda were held Sunday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home following her death Friday at municipal hospital where she had been for only a few hours. She had made her home for two years at West Heights Manor.

Ellis Tyson and Dan Sherick officiated at the service. Mrs. Grace Perry was organist and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Farquhar singers. Casket bearers were: Robert McClure, Marion Wilson, Quentin Beemer, Gary Beemer, Jerry Beemer, Emery Huddle, Orville Brenneman and Gerald Fine. Burial was in the Burch Cemetery near Braddyville.

Mrs. Thompson was born May 30, 1892, at Braddyville, the daughter of George and Clara Wilma Hopple Foster.

She is survived by three children: Clair Tinnell of Clarinda, William A Palmer, of Omaha, and Milton S Palmer of Dublin, Ohio. There are 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Carl Foster of Braddyville is a brother.

Step-brothers are Marvin Woldruff and George Woldruff of Clarinda, Glen Woldruff of Hopkins, Mo, and Albert Woldruff of Colorado Springs, Colo. Step-sisters are Lois Orme of Hopkins, Vera Clayton of New Market, and Ethel Neal of Vancouver, Wash. She was preceded

Adams spent life in New Market area

 MASON TWP - Claude A (Babe) Adams, 61, lifelong resident of the New Market area, died Sunday morning at Mercy hospital in Des Moines where he had been since last Tuesday.

Babe was born April 9, 1911 near Bedford, the son of [John] Manford [Adams] and Cora Ethel Savage. On Feb 25, 1927, he was married to Gladys Rankin who survives. He had worked at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute for 28 years before an injury forced him to retire in 1964. Mr. and Mrs. Adams have lived at their present home south of New Market since 1954.

Funeral services for Mr. Adams will be at 2:30 pm Wednesday at Walker Funeral Home with D L Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Memory cemetery at New Market.

He is survived by his wife of the home, a daughter, Mrs. Gene (Betty Jo) Maley of Clarinda and a grandson. There are seven brothers and sisters: Mrs. Lester (Helen) Parks of Gravity, Kenneth D. Adams of Las Vegas, Nev, Ray Adams of New Market, Harold Adams of Alamosa, Colo., Mrs. Margie Knapp, Blue River, Oregon, Jack Adams, Las Vegas, Nev, and Keith Adams of Osawatomie, Kan.

His mother, Mrs. Ethel Adams lives in New Market He was preceded in death by brothers, Ronald and Buddy, and a sister, Mrs. Theo Greenway, and his father.

Claude A. Adams Last Rites Held February 28

Funeral services for Claude A. (Babe) Adams, 61, lifelong resident of the New Market area, were held February 28 at Walker Funeral Home with D. L. Robe officiating. Mr. Adams died February 25 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines where he had been since February 20. Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Blanchard Shoemaker former N M resident

NEW MARKET - Blanchard M. [ansfield] Shoemaker, 92, one - time resident of this community, died Feb 6 at Tillamook, Ore, where he had made his home for many years.

He had been taken to the hospital with pneumonia on Jan 17. He leaves his wife and two daughters at Tillamook.

He was a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows No 582 of New Market for 71 years. He had joined the lodge at the age of 21, living to wear the 70-year jewel of Odd Fellowship.

AME Church pastor died in Des Moines

The Rev William H. Burnette, Jr., 51, of Des Moines, who has been pastor of Clarinda AME church, was found dead at his home Wednesday morning.

Dr R C Wooters, deputy Polk County medical examiner, said Rev Burnette died of a heart attack, placing death at about 10 pm Monday.

The Rev Mr. Burnette was presiding elder of the Des Moines - Quincy district of the AME Church and had been pastoring the Saint Jacobs AME Church at Clarinda and the Bethel AME Church at Council Bluffs for two years. Rev Burnette had preached at the local church Sunday afternoon and returned to Des Moines. He had been in Des Moines hospital in January for two weeks with a heart ailment. In visiting with the members on Sunday he remarked how much better he was feeling.

Funeral services were held Saturday in Des Moines at the St Paul AME Church, presiding Bishop being the Rt Rev H Thomas Primm of the Fourth Episcopal District, AME Church, the eulogy by Rev E P Williams, presiding elder, Springfield district, Illinois. Pallbearers were Des Moines pastors.

William H Burnette Jr. was born at St Louis, Mo, July 23, 1921 and had lived in Des Moines since 1958. He leaves a wife, a six - year old son and a sister. The Rev Mr. Burnette attended Lincoln University at Jefferson City, Mo, the University of Kansas, Wilber-force (Ohio) University and Columbia University. He was a member of Omega social fraternity, and the Elks and Masonic Lodges and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Those attending the funeral service from Clarinda were Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Griggs, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Griggs, Mrs. Ed Baker and Mrs. Glen King.

Wise's brother died in Kansas

Graveside service for Glen R. [ay] Wise, 52, will be held at Clarinda cemetery Thursday at 1:30 pm following the funeral Wednesday at Penwell - Gabel Funeral Home at Topeka, Kan.

He died Sunday evening at Topeka, which has been his home since 1948. He was son of Mrs. Harve Brown [Opal Faye Brown] of Clarinda, brother of J. [ames] C. [ameron] Wise of rural Shambaugh and Mrs. William Parker of Albuquerque, N M. His wife, Winnie [Winifred Walters], survives him.

He was born at Flagler, Colo., Feb 13, 1921. During World War II, he was in service, and has had heavy machinery operation as his profession. His father, Thomas Glen Wise, died in 1957.

Local arrangements are by Lavelle Funeral Home.

Depew: 33 years in Mason Township

Charley Depew, 87, long - time farmer in the Mason Township area, died this Thursday morning at his home, and services will be Saturday at the New Market Church of Christ at 2 pm.

He was born Nov 5, 1885, in Audubon County, the son of John and Jennie (Kennedy) Depew. He was married to Estella Crouse Dec 11, 1919, the couple celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 1969.

He had farmed in Page County and in Colorado, and had spent the past 33 years in Mason Township. He was a member of the Church of Christ, attending regularly until recent illnesses.

Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by a son Paul of rural New Market; two daughters, Leila Depew and Inez Jo Depew of Clarinda; a sister, Mrs. Jennie Cagley of Clarinda; two brothers, George of Bedford and J. A. of Albuquerque; a sister - in - law, Mrs. Corda Depew of Los Angeles, Cal, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, LeRoy, Earl and Don, and a sister, Josephine.

Loren Daly will officiate at the service, with Lois Moore organist and Shirley Larson soloist. Casketbearers will be Robert Malcom, Dean Moore, Thomas Harris, Del Damewood, E. C. Bennett and John Harness. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Walker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ushers will be Merle Harland and Lee Long and Mrs. Pauline Harland will be at the register.

Memorials may be given for the New Market Church of Christ, of which he was a member.

Willis Philpot lived at Siam

SIAM (Feb 23) - Willis Philpot, 66, of St Joseph died suddenly at his home Feb 17. Willis lived at Siam in his early years with the Hugh Reid family and attended school at Siam and Bedford. He had been a carpenter at St. Joseph. His wife Orra survives.  His funeral and burial were at St. Joseph Tuesday.

Wilson died after illness

Robert P. Wilson Jr., 20, of New Market, died Friday evening at Municipal Hospital after an illness that extended from last October.

The New Market graduate attended school in New Market and was a junior at Iowa State University at Ames when he became ill. The entire community joined to assist the family, particularly by contributing towards a fund for the expenses of the illness, the fund reaching beyond $1,200. He had been in the hospital for recent weeks.

He was born at Maryville, Mo, April 29, 1952, the son of Robert and Janette Wolf Wilson.

He is survived by his parents, two brothers, Mark and Mike, and a sister, Julie, of the home. Grandparents are Mrs. Irma Wolf of Tucson, Ariz., Mr. and Mrs. Joe I. Edwards of Omaha, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wilson of Hepburn. Great - grandparents are Glen O'Bryant of Canton, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. John Young, Spalding, Neb, and Mrs. Clara Carver, Wilmington, Del.

Robert was engaged to Glenda I. Huntsman of New Market. He was   preceded in death   by   a brother, Richard Craig and his grandfather, S. E. Wolf.

Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with Carl Cummings officiating. Mrs. Margaret I. Lininger and Mrs. Grace Perry were in charge of music.

Honorary bearers were Jim I. Radke, Randy Cade, Ed Pace, Randy Sefrit and Joel McComb.

Casket bearers were Alan Burwell, David Whipp, Kenneth Carmichael, Steve Larson, Marvin Runyan and Bob Stanley.

Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Memorials given will be used towards a marker for Bobbie's resting place.

Clarindan's' brother died in Wyoming

Estell Curtis Cross, 49, of Atlantic, brother of Ernest Cross and Mrs. Ben (Hillis) Hayworth of Clarinda, died Feb 14 at the Veterans hospital in Cheyenne, Wyo. Services were held Monday at Gibbon, Neb.        

He was native of Carbon and businessman   at   Atlantic   and Guthrie Center for several years. He was   married to   Virginia I. Cudaback of Lander, Wyo.  After operating a construction company at Gibbon, Neb, they moved to Medicine Bow, Wyo.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters and four sons. His mother is Mrs. E. [lvon] J. Cross [Eliza Robinson], and he has seven brothers and sisters.

Colo. Rites for Donald Marsh 

Frank Donald Marsh, 65, of Glenwood Springs, Colo., formerly of Gravity, died December 15, 1972 in Glenwood Springs. Services were held in Glenwood Springs followed by services and interment at Douglas, Wyoming.            

Frank Donald Marsh was born September 27, 1907, in Gravity, Iowa, son of Frank  [Leonard] and Zula [Dutton] Marsh.  

He graduated from Bedford Iowa High School in 1926.  

October   17, 1927, he was united   in   marriage to Gladys Geraldine Herbert in Chicago, Illinois   where   they   lived two years. Six children were born to   this   union; Doris   Knaus, Mary Shaffer and Walter Marsh of Denver, Colorado, Garland McNare of Douglas, Wyoming, Howard Marsh of Cortez, Colorado and George Marsh of Foster City, California.

They moved to a farm in Ringgold County, Iowa in 1929 and farmed there and in Taylor County until 1945 when they moved to Clarinda, Iowa for a short while before locating in Douglas, Wyoming, where he was employed by the U.S. Forest Service for ten years. While living there he was an active member of the Baptist Church.

From there they moved to Glenwood Springs, Colorado and spent the rest of his life there and in Denver, Colorado.

He was a lifetime member of the Odd Fellow Lodge No. 68.          

He was an active member of the L.D.S. Church. While residing in Denver, he was assistant recorder of Ward #6, and also did the same work for the Glenwood Springs Ward of the Craig Stake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant granddaughter, Joyce Campbell, and a grandson, Robert Shaffer.

Surviving is his wife, Gladys Marsh; all his children; 16 grandchildren; his brother, Willard Marsh, of New Market, Iowa; his sister, Thelma Hughes of Philomath, Oregon; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Willard Marsh of New Market and Mrs. Chuck Braby of Mount Ayr attended the services in Glenwood Springs.

Local relatives have received word that Mrs. Ed (Lena) Goecker died Wednesday evening at Wessington Springs, S D, and will be brought here for burial at the Summit Cemetery, Yorktown.  Services are pending.

Services delayed for Henry Annan

Funeral services for Henry Annan, 72, had not been set by noon this Thursday, delayed when his son was unable to leave Kansas City because of iced highways.

His death came Tuesday at the Shenandoah hospital, where he had been since Dec 7. He had    been in declining health with a lung and heart condition.

Arrangements for the services are being made at Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Interment will be in Polsley cemetery near Yorktown.

His wife was the former Ruth Montgomery, and she survives with a son, Vernon of Kansas City, three grandchildren, brother John of Coin, and three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Carrie) Gillespie of Clarinda, Mrs. Vern (Rhoda) Hammer of Albany, Calif., and Mrs. James (Wilma) O'Harra of Auburn, Neb.

Mr. Annan had been active with the First Baptist Church in Shenandoah. He had been an employee of the Iowa Highway Commission until his retirement in 1965.

HENRY NORMAN ANNAN

Henry Norman Annan, son of John W. and Edna Bonsell Annan, was born April 21,1900 on a farm in Page County, Iowa south of Clarinda. He entered into rest on Tuesday, January 2, 1973 at the Hand Community Hospital in Shenandoah where he had been a patient since December 7, 1972. He had attained the age of 72 years, 8 months and 11 days. On January 10, 1923, Henry was united in marriage with Ruth Montgomery at the Covenanter Parsonage south of Clarinda. To this union two sons were born, Vernon Ross and Dweldon Duane who died in infancy. Henry lived all of his life in Page County, moving to Shenandoah in 1944, where he was employed by the Iowa Highway Commission until his retirement in 1965.

He was an active member of the first Baptist Church as long as his health permitted and through the years had served on various committees and boards in the church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, infant son Dweldon, one brother and one sister.

Henry is survived by his wife Ruth, son Vernon, three grandchildren, Debra Ruth, Twyla Elaine and Steven Duane all   of   Kansas   City, Missouri, one brother John Annan   of Coin, Iowa, three sisters: Carrie, Mrs. Carl Gillespie of Clarinda, Iowa; Rhoda, Mrs. Vern Hammer   of   Albany, California; and Wilma, Mrs. James O'Harra of Auburn, Nebraska, a number of other relatives    and many friends.

The Rev Lucas Buttry officiated for the services held Jan 6 from the Hackett Funeral   Home   and   at   the   Polsley Cemetery near Yorktown.   Furnishing music were Verdin Sorenson and Mrs. Margaret Woods, caring   for flowers Mrs. Quentin Gibson and at memory register   Miss   Ruth   Warner.   Casket bearers were Bernard Boyer, Rogene Carnagey, Charles Drummond, Milton Hovermale, George C. Ross, Jr.  and Robert Staten.

Mrs. McDaniels died after long illness

NEW MARKET - Mrs. M.  [aurice] L. [eroy] (Lois) McDaniels [McDaniel], 80, died Dec 30 at Pocatello, Ida, after a lingering illness. The McDaniels had lived in New Market when Mr. McDaniels [McDaniel] was local tinner and plumber.               

She was born at Siam Feb 15, 1892, daughter of John and Harriett Crepe, and was married June   10, 1914.   Her   husband survives her, as do a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Maxine) Johnson of Fremont, Colo., son, Jack, of Boise, Ida, sister, Mrs. Florence Snively of New Market, and five grandchildren.

She had been visiting here last fall. None from here was able to attend the services.

Lloyd Cokenower Clarinda native       

W. [illiam] Lloyd Cokenower, 88, native Clarinda, died Dec 16 at his home in Albia, and burial was in the Clarinda cemetery Dec 20 at the side of his parents, Dr. and Mrs. H. [enry] L. Cokenower [Clara Hamilton].           

Dr. Cokenower was a practicing physician in Clarinda in the late 1800's. Lloyd attended schools in Clarinda and his mother and family moved to Albia after the father's death. The mother died in 1938. Lloyd has a daughter, Mrs. Albert (Helen) Gordon, in G1en Ellyn, Ill.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon went to Albia for the service, but notified Clarinda friends that they would delay visit here until spring. Mrs. Ina Pierce received the word here, learning that Lloyd had been in good health and the death was unexpected.

L Burdette Sallee life-time farmer

L. [eonard] Burdette Sallee, 83, a farmer in the Coin and Northboro areas, died Wednesday afternoon at Hand Community Hospital in Shenandoah after being in declining health for the past year. He had been residing in a Shenandoah nursing home before going to the hospital.

He was born at Blanchard and spent his entire life farming. He was a member of the Northboro United Methodist Church, where services will be held at 2 pm Saturday, Rev Richard Russell officiating. A prayer service will be held at 1:30 pm with Rev L P Fitzpatrick in charge. Burial will be in the Blanchard cemetery.

 Survivors include a son, Francis Sallee of Coin; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Jean) Henderson   of   Northboro; two sisters, Mrs. Walter   (Mary) Reece of Coin and Mrs. George (Carrie) Speakman of Emporia, Kan; six grandchildren and eight great - grandchildren.
