Bert Cannady Dead
Saturday,
August 26, at 6 a. m., occurred the death of Bert [Bird] Cannady [Canaday] at his home in Mason Township, aged 39 years. He
had been sick nearly a month with typhoid fever and kidney trouble. The funeral
was conducted at the home by Rev. Thos. Scherer at 9 a. m. Sunday. Interment
took place in the Scherer [Shearer] cemetery.
Mr.
Cannady [Canaday] was a kind and
loving husband, an indulgent parent, and had made many friends who deplore his
loss. He leaves a wife and infant daughter and an aged mother. May the Father
of the fatherless care for and protect them.

Obituary
Another
old pioneer has gone to his reward—Thomas Canady [Canaday] died at his residence, three miles north of Siam, Page county,
Iowa, Thursday evening June 11, 1903, at 5 o'clock, of old age, he was in his
79th year. He was married in Buchanan County, Mo., to Miss Rachael Wills
[Wells], a noted pioneer family
of Missouri. A son and daughter was born, the daughter having long gone before,
and the son followed a few years ago.
Deceased
became a member of the old school Baptist church in 1885. His wife died about 6
years ago. He was a good Christian man and his reward is certain.
The
funeral occurred at the residence, on Friday the 13th inst. Many friends were
present to pay a last tribute of respect to the dead. The remains were interred
in the Shearer cemetery by the side of his departed wife. C.

Obituary—Mrs.
C. A. Clayton
Nancy
Katherine Hardesty, daughter of Alexander
and Mary Elizabeth Hardesty, was
born in Davis County, Kentucky, October 3, 1848 and departed this life November
14, 1925 aged 77 years, 1 month and 11 days. She was one of a family of eight
children, all of whom passed away in early life except one sister Mrs. Wm.
Landon who was with her in her
last sickness. Her father passed away in 1854 and the mother in 1867. Her
girlhood days were spent in Kentucky. In 1865 she was united in marriage to Thomas
Hultz in Union county Kentucky,
who died in 1873. In 1875 she was married to H. [enry] H. [arrison] Barnes of Park County, Ind. and was a dearly loved
mother to his four children, three of whom survive her. In 1876 they moved to
Kan where they continued to reside until Mr. Barnes health failed and they returned to his old home
in Indiana where he passed away in 1895. She then came to make her home with
her sister, Mrs. Landon near
Siam and on November 8, 1900 was united in marriage to Chas. A. [ddison]
Clayton and lovingly filled a
mother’s place to his three children, two of whom have so kindly and lovingly
helped minister to her in her long illness. She united with the Liberty Baptist
church in December 1875 in Park County, Indiana and transferred her membership
to the Methodist church in Siam during a revival meeting held by Rev. J. A.
Nayle.
Aunt
Kitty as she was familiarly and lovingly called, was loved by all for her kind
and cheerful disposition and numbered her friends by her acquaintances. She
leaves to mourn their loss, her husband, Chas. A. Clayton, one sister, Mrs. Wm. Landon of Kent, Iowa, three step daughters in Kansas,
who were unable to be present during her sickness and death, and two step sons, Roy Clayton of Gerome, Idaho,
who was unable to be present, Archie Clayton of Siam and one step daughter, Mrs. Dell
Miller of Siam. Also a dearly
loved sister-in-law, Mrs. Crystal Clayton who was so faithful in caring for her. There are seven grandchildren
here to whom she gave her love and kindness and many other relatives and
friends.
The
funeral was preached in the Methodist church in Siam by the pastor, Rev.
Bennett, at 11 o'clock Tuesday. Interment in the Oak Grove [Shearer] cemetery.

—Died,
on Wednesday [March 5th] of last week, at her home in Polk Township,
Taylor County, Iowa, Mrs. Sarah [Grant] Collins, aged about 59 years of paralysis. The deceased
was the widow of William Collins, who died about three years ago. She died on the fortieth anniversary of her
wedding day and had been a member of the M. E. church for upwards of forty
years. She leaves three children, all married daughters. The funeral took place
at the Shearer graveyard on Friday, the 29th ult., and the funeral sermon was
preached at Buchanan by Rev. Heaton. —Hopkins Journal.

Alexander B. Davis Dead
Alexander
B. Davis was born in Ohio,
September 16, 1829, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. [red] L.
McMahill, in Bedford, Wednesday
morning at 3 o'clock, November 27, 1907, from stomach trouble. In 1849 the
deceased was married to Miss Susan Perry and they soon moved to Iowa farming in Clarke and Page counties
before moving to Taylor County. They moved to Taylor county in 1891 near New
Market.
They
were the parents of fourteen children, nine of whom survive their father. Those
still living are W. [illiam] P.,
of Clarinda; J. [ames] W. [right], of Yorktown; John, of York, Neb.; Amos, of Des Moines; Mrs. Sarah Clay, of Medford, Oregon; Mrs. Mary Woodward, of Quincy, Ill.; Mrs. Emma Cunning, of Shenandoah; Mrs. Alice McMahill, of Bedford; and A. [lexander] B., of Bedford.
The
loving wife of the deceased died in 1895, and for the past two years he has
been making his home in Bedford with his children. Early in life Mr. Davis became a member of the Predestinarian Baptist
church and he has always clung to that faith through life, leading a noble
Christian life, and the heritage of a good name to his children. The funeral
will be held Friday, November 29, from the Shear [er] church near Siam, and the
burial will be in the cemetery at that place. The bereaved children have the
sympathy of all.

Gone To His Reward,
Alexander
P. [B.] Davis died at his home in
West Bedford yesterday morning at 3 o'clock after a brief illness of only three
days. The funeral will be held tomorrow at the church four miles southwest of
Siam conducted by Elder Simmons of Hopkins. Obituary will be published later.

DOUGHERTY
Thelma
Jeffers Dougherty, 88, former
business teacher for 30 years and former resident, died Thursday, May 30 in
Albert Lea, Minn., at the Thorne Crest Care Center. She lived at the Thorne
Crest Retirement Center for the past five years.
Dougherty was born in Bedford, Iowa in 1902. She graduated
from Bedford High School in 1920, and received an associate degree in business
education from Whitewater college in Whitewater, Wisc., in 1922.
In
1926, she married Ray [Leonard] Dougherty, a new Market, Iowa banker.
Dougherty taught in private business colleges in Duluth,
Minneapolis, and Mankato, Minn., Fort Wayne, Ind., and in Rapid City, S.D. Her
special interest was Gregg Shorthand, although she taught all business
subjects.
Dougherty's
last teaching assignment was in Mankato, Minn., where she retired five years
ago.
Students
became her life-long friends; she still corresponded with several of them at
the time of her death.
Dougherty was the daughter of A. [braham] L. [incoln]
and Mattie [Martha Bebout] Jeffers,
and granddaughter of Abram and Margaret Bebout and Dennis and Kate Jeffers, all Taylor County pioneers. She had two older
brothers, Vern and Clem Jeffers,
who preceded her in death.
Family
survivors include Margaret Praether,
Hopkins, Mo., niece, Dennis Jeffers,
Bedford, nephew, and Dennis Underwood, grandnephew, with his wife Jean, and daughter Jennifer of Peru, Ind.
Graveside
services were held at Shearer Cemetery southeast of Clarinda on Tuesday, June
4, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. A reception for friends
and family followed.
Memorials
may be sent to the Thelma Dougherty Scholarship Fund in care of Norwest Bank,
Albert Lea, Minn.
A
scholarship award will be made to a business education senior at an area high
school for [a] period of years.

NOBLE IRA FEARNOT
Services
for Noble Ira Fearnot, 75,
were held July 11 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Carl
Cummings. Burial was at Shearer Cemetery, rural Page County, Iowa. Mr.
Fearnot died July 8, 1987 at
Bedford, Ia.

Fearnot was born in Greene
County, Indiana, August 15, 1911. He grew to maturity in Marco, Indiana where
he attended the public school and the Methodist Church.
On
October 3, 1931 he was united in marriage to Elsie Irene Ridenour at Grant City, Mo. and they lived in Bedford and
the surrounding community all of their married life. To this union seven children
were born: Bill, Alberta, Shirley, Phyllis, twins Gale and Dale, and Beverly.
He
was employed as a farmer and a carpenter.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Elsie who died in November 1981; daughter Alberta; grandson Chuckie Murren; great granddaughter Jamie Hargin; sisters, Blanche Cross and Daisy Hayden and brothers Lane, Henry, Harry and Donald.
Left
to cherish his memory are his children: Bill Fearnot and his wife Melinda, Shirley Kleckner and husband Bill, Phyllis Abell and husband, Joe, Gale Miller and husband John R., Dale Fearnot and wife Pauline, Beverly Hargin and husband Marion,
two sisters: Susie Fearnot Henderson and Pansy Fearnot Smith;
one brother, Charles Fearnot;
20 grandchildren, Kathy Biggs, Connie Larsen, Karen Johnson, Mike Murren,
Duane Murren, Linda Ryan, Randy Abell, Teresa Hartman, Jeff Abell, Laurie
Abell, Penny Henson, Tim Abell, Marvin Miller, Pam Stroup, Don Fearnot, Paula
Fearnot, Cindy Baucom, Jodi Greene, Rob Hargin and Anabel Dunbar, and Steven Kleckner; 25 great grandchildren; four great step
children, other relatives and friends.
He
was a member of the Methodist Church in Indiana. He was a kind father,
grandfather, friend and neighbor.

Claude Fine, 80, Rites in Siam
Funeral
services for Claude Fine, 80,
were held at the Siam Methodist Church April 14 conducted by Carl Cummings. Mr.
Fine died April 12, 1968 at a
nursing home here. Interment was at Shearer Cemetery.
[Oliver]
Claude Fine, son of [Stephen
Arnold] Douglas Fine and Nealy Smith Fine, was born June 10, 1887.
He
attended the Fine school and was married to Mary Jane Moffit. After their marriage he farmed between Siam and
Hopkins.
He
is survived by his wife; four sons, Orris Leroy, [Edgar] Lyle, [Clifton]
Fred and John [Douglas] who with
their families live near Hopkins; 14 grandchildren and three great
grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Elma Ingram and Mrs. Rose [Maude] Retzer of Canon City, Colo., and Mrs. Mary [Ethel]
Taylor of Stronghurst, Ill.
His
parents, two brothers Cleve [Clarence Cleveland] of Wyoming and Ralph [Douglas] of Siam and an infant child preceded him in death.
Mr.
and Mrs. G. [eorge] B. [enton] Ingram and Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Retzer of Canon City attended the funeral.
