Harold
L. [eslie] Boyd, 91, of
Washington, brother of Elma Mitchell of College Springs, died October 28, 1993, at Washington. Services
were held October 30 in Washington and burial was at the Elm Grove Cemetery
with military rites.
Boyd was born September 29, 1902, at Gladwin, to J.
[ohn] W. [alford] Will and Mary (Moorman) Boyd. He graduated from Washington High School and in
1927 from the University of Iowa. He married Alberta W. Huffman on September 3, 1931, at Cavalier, ND. He was a school superintendent in
Montana from 1927 to 1941.

Darold Cooper
Darold
D. Cooper, 78, of Fremont, Ne.,
and formerly of Clarinda, died Sunday, December 12, 1993 at Immanuel Medical
Center in Omaha.
He
was born October 1, 1915 in New Market, and grew up in Gravity. On May 24,
1941, he married Gwelda J. Wheeler in Maryville, Mo.
Cooper served in World War II from 1942-1946, a sergeant
of the 447th Quartermaster Division. During his years in the armed forces, he
earned both the Good Conduct Medal and Marksman Rifle Awards.
He
returned to farming in Gravity until 1961 when he moved to Colorado to work as
the manager for Builders Order Center. In 1972 he moved to Clarinda, where he
farmed until retirement in 1983 and then moved to Fremont, Ne., in 1989.
Cooper was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post
#20 in Fremont.
He
is survived by his wife Gwelda Cooper of Fremont, one son David and wife Delilah of
Fremont, two half-brothers, two half-sisters, and one granddaughter.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two half-brothers, one
half-sister, and an aunt and uncle.
Services
were held Tuesday, December 14, at Rozanek and Son Colonial Chapel in Fremont,
Ne., with Pastor Glenn R. Johnson of the Fremont First Christian Church
officiating.
Burial
and commital will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, at the Fairview
Cemetery in Bedford. Military graveside services will be conducted by the
American Legion Post #164 in Bedford.
The
family requests memorials to the American Diabetes Association.

Mrs.
Bonnie Friend, 82, of Maryville,
MO, formerly of Clarinda died Sunday, January 26, at St. Francis Hospital.
She
was born July 31, 1909, in rural Page County, the daughter of George [Estel]
and Phemie [Clotilda] Roush Gray.
On October 12, 1926 she was married to Elmer Friend who preceded her in death January 27, 1981. After
Mr. Friend’s death she lived with her children before entering the nursing home
in Maryville.
She
is survived by six children, Mrs. Edward (Ruth) Barcus, Maryville, MO; Mrs. Jack (Neola) Peery, Essex; Delmer Lee Friend, Des Moines; Mrs. August (Lola Marie) Steeve, Hopkins, MO; Mrs. Kenneth (Violet) Williams. Clarinda; Billie Cecil Friend, Des Moines; there are 29 grandchildren; and 36
great-grandchildren. Brothers are Alvin L. Gray, Hopkins, MO; and Glen Gray, Newhall, CA. Sister [s] are Elva Knierim, Council Bluffs; Fern Jones, Dickerson, TX.
She
was preceded in death by parents, husband, children, Mary Belle, Paul and
Fay Ellen, four grandchildren, 2
brothers and one sister.
Funeral
services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, at Walker-Merrick Funeral
Home, Clarinda with burial in Shearer Cemetery near Braddyville.
Visitation will be from
7-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 28 at the funeral home.

Evelyn
Farrens-Friend was born in Page
County, Iowa, December 12, 1859. Here she grew to young womanhood. December 5th,
1877, she was united in marriage to Isaac T. [homas] Friend. To this union were born three children who
survive her. They are Mrs. John Maxwell, of Bedford, and Carrie and Elmer who remain at home.
She also leaves to mourn their loss, seven grandchildren, a great-grandchild,
and seven brothers and four sisters. They are D. [avid] A. [lexander]
Farrens, J. [osephus] S. Farrens, S. [amuel] S. Farrens, N. [icholas] M.
[cCauley] Farrens and J. [ohn]
L. [incoln] Farrens of Decatur,
Nebr., G. [rant] G. Farrens and Rena Henning of Tekamah,
Nebr., Mrs. Mary [Elizabeth] Beck and Albert Farrens of Winford,
S. D., Mrs. Lillie [Belle] Weaver of Bates, S. D., Mrs. Jane Hammond of
Buffalo, Oklahoma. The husband and father passed away several years ago. Mrs.
Friend had attained at the time
of her death the age of 77 years, 2 months and 8 days.
She
had often expressed her faith in her Savior; and the day before she passed away
she sang a few words of “Nearer My God to Thee.” She was a good mother, and was
kept busy making life more comfortable for those around her. She will be
greatly missed by her many friends, relatives and neighbors.
The
funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. H. Meredith, pastor of the
Clarinda Methodist church at the Scheerer [Shearer] church last Wednesday
forenoon, and the burial was in the nearby cemetery.

Donald Lee Gay Sr.
Donald
Gay, 50, of Farragut, died at the
Shenandoah Memorial Hospital emergency room early Monday, January 27.
He
was born August 24, 1941 at Clarinda. His parents were Sherman and (Clara
Belle) Gay. He was married to Kristine
Sellers on April 30, 1970. They
were living at R.R 1, Farragut.
Survivors
include his wife of the home and a daughter Mrs. Tom (Sherry) Corrill of Salix; one daughter, (Terri) Elston of Logan; 2 sons, Brad Gay of Logan; Donald Gay Jr. of Shenandoah; 4 step children, Mrs. Tony
(Shawna) Russell of Dennison, KS; Mrs. Mike (Anna) MacDonald of
Farragut; (Dori) Tate of
Omaha, NE; and a grandson, Khristopher Pence who is living with them. There are 17
grandchildren; five brothers, Pierce Gay of Davenport; Elmer Gay of Shenandoah; Frank Gay of
Omaha, NE; Harold Gay of
Broken Bow, NE; Darrell Gay of
Omaha, NE; a sister, Ruth who
lives in Missouri.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be
at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with burial
at the Oak Grove Cemetery near Clarinda.
Visitation will be from
7-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 28 at the funeral home.

Josephine
C. Gish, 74, of Braddyville died
Sunday morning, November 21,1993 at the Municipal Hospital after a few months
of illness.
She
was born March 19, 1919, at Des Moines, the daughter of Anthony Joseph and
Elizabeth Strupinski Dunsky. She
lived in Omaha prior to moving to Braddyville in 1982.
She
is survived by her long-time companion, Erroll (Al) Allison of Braddyville;
stepchildren, Mrs. Dariel (Donna) Elam of Salvisa, Ky, and Wally Allison and wife Betty of North Platte, Ne. There were three
step-grandchildren. Sisters are Ann Harvey of Des Moines, Connie Wilson of Needles, Ca, and Isabelle Keturokis of Des Moines, and a brother is Tony Dunsky of Des Moines.
Funeral
services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 23, at Walker-Merrick Funeral
Home with Father Gordon Gittins officiating.
There
is open visitation at the funeral home. Burial will be in Shearer Cemetery near
Braddyville.

Griffith, 87, longtime
Braddyville resident, died this Thursday at Methodist Hospital in St. Joseph,
Mo. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home of Clarinda is assisting with the funeral
arrangements, services still pending.
Survivors
include three sons and one daughter. Local relatives include a son and wife, Mr.
and Mrs. Perry Griffith. Among
the 13 grandchildren surviving are Kirk Griffith and Dwight Griffith, both of Clarinda, as well as a number of great
grandchildren.
Mr.
Griffith had been in ill health
since last January. In recent months he had moved from Braddyville to make his
home in Clarehaven.

Douglas Griffith service held
Douglas
F. [ranklin] Griffith, 87, of
Clarinda, formerly of the Shambaugh area, died Thursday at Methodist Medical
Center in St. Joseph where he had been since May 10.
Funeral
services were held Sunday afternoon at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev.
Bob Thompson officiating. Jon and Jane Stimson were singers with Ruth Anderson
organist. Honorary bearers were Bob Beach, Jr, Kirk and Troy Griffith, Derek
Hixson, Randy Barnes and Jerry Morris. Casket bearers were Dwight Griffith,
Steve Miller, Bob Beach, Melvin Callen, Kenneth Griffith and David DeVore.
Burial was in Shearer cemetery near Braddyville with military services at the
graveside.
He
was born Feb. 23, 1894, the son of Alfred and Amanda Journey Griffith. He attended Olive Branch School.
In
December of 1917, he was married to Edna Damewood, who died in March of 1969. In December of 1971,
he was married to Blanche Cader who survives.
He
was a farmer and veteran of WWI.
Besides
his wife of the home, he is survived by four children: Harold of Kansas City, Mo, Eldon of Ft. Morgan, Co, Perry Griffith of College Springs and Mrs. Elvin (Mary
Evelyn) DeVore of Loveland, Co.
There are 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Sisters are Mrs.
Esther Walker of Clarinda, Mrs.
Elizabeth Grabeel of Orange, Ca. Albert
Griffith of Cherokee, Ia, is a
brother. Sister-in-laws are Mrs. Alfred (Lesta) Crawford and Mrs. Neva Damewood.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John and Dewey and sisters Olivia Lynch, Dorothy Miller and Anne Hutchinson, one grandson and one great great grandson.

V. [ernice] Hardee, daughter of Peter
Ad [d] ison and Josie [Josephine Mary] McCord Strait, was born Feb. 16, 1908 in rural Adams County
near Corning. She died Saturday, Dec. 16, 1996 at the home of her son, Phil
Hardee, rural Page County, at the
age of 87.
Hardee lived in Adams County while growing up, attending
rural schools then Corning High School through the 10th grade. She attended
Corning Methodist Church in her youth.
On
Sept. 8, 1927, she married Estes J. [ames] Hardee in Corning. They had two children. After their
marriage, the couple farmed in Taylor and Page counties. She worked for 15
years at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute until she retired.
Hardee
was a member of the Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star, Highland
Chapter, Siam.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Estes; 14 brothers and sisters; and her daughter, Beryl
Ann Karg.
Survivors
include her son, Phil and Janice Hardee, Siam; son-in-law, Homer Karg, Clarinda; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren.
Funeral
services were Dec. 20 at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home, Bedford. Burial was in
Shearer Cemetery, rural Page County.

Agnes
V. [ernice] Strait, daughter of Peter
Ad [d] ison and Josie [Josephine Mary] McCord Strait, was born on February 16, 1908 in rural Adams

1995 at the home of her son in rural Page County, at the age of 87 years, 10
months.
Agnes lived in Adams County in her growing up years,
attending rural schools then the Corning High School through the 10th grade.

On
September 8, 1927 she was united in marriage to Estes J. [ames] Hardee at Corning, Iowa. To this union were born two
children, Beryl Ann and Phil
A. After Estes and Agnes were married, they farmed in Taylor and Page Counties. Agnes worked for 15 years at Clarinda Mental Health
until she retired.
Agnes was a member of the Methodist
Church and the Order of Eastern Star, Highland Chapter, Siam, Iowa. She was
preceded in death by her parents, 14 brothers and sisters, and her daughter, Beryl
Ann Karg.
She
leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Phil and wife Janice; son-in-law Homer Karg of Clarinda and seven grandchildren, Patty
Sunderman, Clarinda; Sherry
Balster, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Marvin
Karg, Freeport, Illinois; Jackie
Bain, Shenandoah, Iowa; Susie
Stamps, Gravity, Iowa; Phyllis
Williams, New Market, Iowa; and Jim
Hardee, Clarinda, Iowa. There are
nine great grandchildren: they are Renae Engelhardt, Brent and Ryan
Sunderman, Bryce Balster, Evan and Shayna Karg, Lacy Woodyard, Sabrina Stamps
and Kaitlyn Williams.
She
was a kind and considerate mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will
be missed by family and friends.
Services
were held December 20 at Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home. Burial was in Shearer
Cemetery in rural Page County.

Funeral
services for Estes J. [ames] Hardee,
80, of rural Clarinda will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Walker-Merrick
Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating.
Hardee died Sunday afternoon at Goldenrod Manor where he
had been a patient since Monday.
He
was born Nov. 22, 1907, in Buchanan Township, the son of Ezra P. [ulaski]
and Mary L. [ouise Martin Hardee.
On
Sept. 8, 1927, he was married to Agnes [Vernice] Strait at Corning.
Hardee was a farmer and had worked at MHI.
He
was a past master of the Siam Masonic Lodge and member of Siam Eastern Star.
Hardee is survived by his wife Agnes of the home and one son, Phillip Hardee, rural Clarinda. There are seven grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by parents, daughter Beryl Ann Karg, four brothers and three sisters.
Burial
will be in Shearer cemetery with Masonic services at the funeral home Tuesday
at 7:30 with visitation until 8:30.

Estes
James Hardee, son of Ezra P.
[ulaski] and Mary L. [ouise] Martin Hardee, was born November 22, 1907 in Buchanan township of Page County. He
departed this life on May 22, 1988 at the Goldenrod Manor, at Clarinda, Iowa,
where he had been for less than a week.
Estes attended rural Hardee School and graduated from
Clarinda High School with the class of 1926. While in high school he played
football, a game that he dearly loved.
He
was united in marriage to Agnes Strait at Corning, Iowa on September 8, 1927. He and Agnes observed their 60th anniversary September 8,
1987.
To
this union two children were born, Beryl Ann and Phillip Allen.
Estes farmed all his life in the same community where
he was born, he also worked at the Clarinda Mental Health for 15 years before
semi retiring.
He
was an avid hunter and fisherman as long as his health permitted.
He
was a member of the Masonic Plumb Lodge #285 at Siam, having served as Master.
He was also a member of the Eastern Star Lodge Highland Chapter #553 where he
served as Worthy Patron for several years.
At
the time of his death he still owned the land that the original family settled
in 1841. It was the homestead where his nephew Perry was born, as the first white child to be born in
Page County.
Estes was preceded in death by his
parents, his daughter Beryl Ann Karg, three sisters and four brothers.
He
leaves to mourn his passing his wife Agnes of their home, son, Phil and wife Janice, son-in-law Homer
Karg. There are seven
grandchildren--Patricia, Sherry, Marvin, Jackie, Susie, Phillies and Jim.
There
are also five great grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends.
He
will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mrs. Clara Holbrook of Clearmont Dies Here
Mrs.
Clara Elsie Holbrook, 63 years of
age, who resided five miles northeast of Clearmont, died at 12:10 o’clock
Sunday afternoon at the St. Francis hospital where she had been a patient three
weeks.
She
was born November 29, 1879, at Atlantic, Ia., the daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Jacob Ergenbright. On
November 10, 1927 she was married to George Holbrook of Clearmont.
She
is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Neil Owens, Braddyville, Ia., and Mrs. Lucile Hall, Chicago, Ill.; one son, Glenn Fine, Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Ill. and one
brother, Ed Ergenbright,
Superior, Wis.
Funeral
services will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church at
Braddyville, Ia., and burial will be in the Shearer cemetery at Braddyville. Rev.
Ted Masters, pastor of the Methodist church of Grant City, will officiate.

Mrs. George Holbrook
Clara Elsie Ergenbright was born to Jake and Harriett Ergenbright, Nov 29, 1880, at Atlantic, Ia, and departed this life Feb 14, 1943, at St Francis hospital at Maryville, Mo, aged 63 years, 2 months and 16 days. On Nov 29, 1900, she was united in marriage to [James] Elmer Fine of Siam, Ia, who passed away Jan 25, 1923. To this union was born three children, Thelma Owens of Braddyville, Ia, Lucille Hall of Chicago, Ill, and Glen Fine of Great Lakes, Ill. In early life she became a member of the Methodist church of Siam, Ia. On Nov 7, 1927, she was married to George Holbrook of Clearmont, Mo, with whom she spent 15 very happy years and who remained her devoted companion to the very end. She leaves to mourn their loss, her husband, 3 children, 1 grandchild, Eddie Hall, 1 brother, Ed Ergenbright of Superior, Nebr, 2 nephews, Roy and Harold Ergenbright of Chicago, Ill, 1 stepdaughter, Opal Drennen of Omaha, Nebr, and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted on February 16 at the Methodist church in Braddyville by Rev Ted Masters of Grant City. Music was furnished by the Braddyville quartet. Interment was in the Shearer cemetery.

H. [einrich] Lampe, 90, of
Clarinda, formerly of St. Louis County, Mo, died Saturday, November 20, 1993 at
the Clarinda municipal Hospital.
He
was born September 19,1903 in St. Louis County, Mo, the son of Henry and
Meta (Niehaus) Lampe. On July 3,
1926, he was married to Louise Bentfeld, who preceded him in death in 1989. Lampe was a painting contractor in the St. Louis area.
He relocated to Clarinda in December, 1991.
He
is survived by sons Wayne Lampe and his wife Ida of
Florissant, Mo, and Rev. Ken Lampe and his wife Vi of Clarinda,
seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and sisters, Melba Niehaus of St. Louis.
Funeral
services will be at 2 pm. Wednesday, November 24,1993 at Salem Lutheran Church,
Florissant, Mo, with burial in Salem Lutheran Cemetery. Family visitation will
be Monday, November 22, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Clarinda, Organ Fund;
the Salem Lutheran Church, Florissant, Mo; or KFUO Radio, St. Louis, Mo.

funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.
Pauline
Agnes Malvern, daughter of William
Thomas and Ida May (Ellis) Crosley,
was born May 12, 1907 in Guthrie, Oklahoma Territory. As a small child she
moved with her family to various towns where her father' s railroad work took
him. It was in Tabernash, Co, that she met Ed Malvern and they were married there on March 28, 1926.
They moved to Clarinda later that fall, and their two daughters, Betty Jean and Helen Lorraine, were born here.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on December 25, 1966, five
brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Henry
(Betty) Ankeny of Clarinda and Helen
L. Cherry of Smithtown, NY, seven
grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Malvern was an active member of the First Christian
Church of Clarinda and the American Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered with the
RSVP group at various places, especially the museum, and was a local sports
booster.
She
died November 19, 1993 at Bethesda Care Center. Memorials may be given to the
Christian Church, Nodaway Valley Historical Museum or the Clocktower Fund.
Burial
will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.
