HUDDLE -- Clarence W. Huddle, 68, an Albuquerque resident since 1956, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, January 10, 2003. The family will miss their husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, but they find joy through their sorrow because they know he has been delivered out of his earthly bondage and illness and into a new and perfect life with Christ. Clarence lived his life based on Romans 1:16"I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ", and took every opportunity to pray for others, reaching them for Christ. Clarence Wendell Huddle was born July 29, 1934, in Missouri and raised on family farms in Missouri and Iowa. He served in the US Army 11th Airborne Division (the Angels) and was attending the Milwaukee School of Engineering when recruited by Sandia Laboratories as an Electrical Engineer. In 1956 he moved to Albuquerque with his bride, Shirley Wilson, to begin his new career. He loved his work and enjoyed a variety of tasks before retiring after 33 years. Clarence enjoyed riding his motorcycles, vegetable gardening, camping, ham radios/Morse code (obtaining his commercial radio operator license), and radio control airplanes. He loved learning, enjoyed many things that challenged him, and was always taking classes, Bible studies and reading books. He was a founding member at First Church of the Nazarene and an active member for 30+ years, he served on the Board and as Treasurer, Sunday School teacher, bus driver, and Scout Master for the Church Boy Scout Troop, among other ministries. He was a member and deacon at Hoffmantown Baptist Church, serving for over ten years.

He was committed to his wife, children and grandchildren, to serving the Lord, to prayer, and to fellowship with friends. Clarence was preceded in death by his mother, Dolly, on January 7, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley; his son, Gary and daughter-in- law, Holly; his daughter, Connie Happeny and son-in-law, Joel and grandsons Daniel and Kevin; his sister and brother-in-law, Verla and Merlin Shippey, his sister and brother-in-law Eva and Doyle Ellis; and brother, John Huddle. The family is thankful for the love and prayers that surround them, and for the comfort and healing grace of Jesus' love and the knowledge that He, who has loved Clarence as one of His own precious children, has welcomed him home. A celebration of his life and Memorial Service ill be held at Heights First Church of the Nazarene, 8401 Paseo del Norte NE, Albuquerque, NM, at 2 pm Friday, January 17, 2003.

Gertie Bonsall service held

Gertie Bonsall, 88, died June 7, 1985 at Shields Nursing Home.

She was born February 19, 1897 at Greenfield, Tennessee to Perry and Florence Harbor Crawford.  As a small girl she moved to Northwest Missouri, later coming to Southwest Iowa.  She was married to Jake B. Bonsall on January 9, 1929.  They made their home in Clarinda.  She was a member of the First Christian Church and a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Floyd (Doris) Griffith of Clarinda, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, and a brother-in-law Homer and Nellie Bonsall of Ulysses, Kansas.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jake in 1978, a daughter, Winona Youchem and all her brothers and sisters.

Services were held Monday at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Carl Cummings officiating.  Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

C. F. Borden

Charles Franklin Borden, son of Alfred and Rachel Borden, was born on a farm near Sharpsburg, Iowa, August 27, 1877, and departed this life April 14, 1943, at his home in Shambaugh, Iowa. 

On November 14, 1904, he was married to Miss Ida Parker.  To his union was born five children, Alfred Clarence of Garden Grove, Iowa, Donald Ogle of Hastings, Nebraska, LaVaun (Mrs. Kenneth Oline) of Coin, Iowa and Lulu May and Charles Junior who preceded him in death.

An honorable and upright citizen, a friend to everyone, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, and always thinking of others.

He was greatly devoted to his home and children.

He leaves to mourn their loss, his grieving companion, three children, six grandchildren, three brothers, and one sister, Clarence Borden of Hunt, SD, Homer Borden of New Market, Iowa, Fred Borden of Sharpsburg, Iowa, and Miss Nellie Borden of Sharpsburg, Iowa and many other friends and relatives. 

Three brothers preceded him in death.

Earl Beery

He died February 28, 1979, at the age of 70 years, 4 months, and 24 days.  At an early age he joined the Church of God at Shambaugh. 

On March 6, 1939, he was united in marriage to Mildred J. Higgens of Clarinda and to this union two sons were born.

The next several years were spent in many communities, as he served International Harvester Company, being store manager or dealer in Clarinda, company store manager for IHC in Pratt, Kansas, and a zone manager for the same company for 25 years, from the Kansas City District.  He had also worked out of the Council Bluffs district, while living in Oakland, Iowa and the Hutchinson, Kansas district, serving as zone manager in each place.  About twenty years were spent living in St. Joseph Missouri, still serving the same company, before moving to Hermitage, Missouri in May of 1962.

After moving to the lake area, he owned and operated the Sportland store, until the early part of 1978, when ill health forced him to sell out the buisnes.  Earl served as secretary and treasurer of the Lake Pomme De Terre League for a period.  He was a member of the Lions Club and received his twenty-year membership pin recently. 

Funeral services were held March 2, 1979, 10:30 am at Hathaway Chapel and burial at Nemo Cemetery.

Irene Borden  1910-2006

Irene Borden, 96, St. Joseph, Mo., formerly of Bethany, Mo., passed unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 27, 2006, at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Borden was born May 6, 1910, in Shambaugh, Iowa. She married Alfred Clarence Borden on May 14, 1936, who preceded her in death. She was a housekeeper for Ramada Inn for over 30 years.

Mrs. Borden also was preceded in death by her parents, John Scott and Bessie Mae (Beery) McClarnon; three brothers, Roy, Leonard and Vern McClarnon; and her sister, Laura Jarvis.

She loved spending time outdoors, watching sports and caring for her cats.

Survivors: her son, Dr. Wayne Borden, and wife, Donna of Howey In The Hills, Fla.; two daughters, Ruth Athay of the home; and Gloria Yurth, and husband, Gerald of St. Joseph; her sister, Bernice Moore of Clarinda, Iowa; six grandchildren, Shelly Athay and Kelly Chaney, both of St. Joseph; Toni Way and Todd Cooper, both of Hartford, Conn.; Scott Borden of Toano, Va.; and Chris Borden of Providence, R.I.; as well as, numerous great-grandchildren.

Service: 1 p.m. Thursday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, St. Joseph. Interment: Miriam Cemetery, Bethany, Mo. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, where friends may call after 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorial gifts to the Humane Society.

Mary McClarnon

Mary C. McClarnon, 99, longtime resident of the Braddyville area died Saturday evening at the Baptist Home in Omaha. 

She was born September 27, 1877, near Hopkins, Missouri, the daughter of Howard and Susanna Wingard Hensley.  She was married to Lewis Robert McClarnon, June 7, 1899.  They farmed on the same place east of Braddyville, which was her home for 65 years.

After the death of her husband in 1964, she made her home with her children.  She had been in rest homes for care the past four years.

Funeral services will be at 11 am Tuesday at the Braddyville Christian Church with Rev John Shipley officiating.

Casket bearers will be the grandsons, Mrs. Marjorie Laub will be at the register.  Ushers will be Ted Laub and Earl Snodderly.

Burial will be in the Braddyville cemetery with walker Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. McClarnon is survived by four children, Mrs. Russell (Helen Gayle) Wall of Palatine, Illinois, Eldon Earl McClarnon of Kansas City, Missouri, Bruce Hensley Kansas City, Missouri, and Mrs. Frank (Charleen) Shepherd of Omaha, Nebraska.

There are fourteen grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Lillian Stephens is a sister.  Mrs. James Hensley is a sister-in-law and Ernest Tando of Seattle, Washington is a brother-in-law.

She was preceded in death two sons, Ralph Raleigh McClarnon and Hoard Donald McClarnon.

Mrs. McClarnon was a member of the Berea Christian Church in Taylor County

Roy McClarnon

Shambaugh – Funeral services for Roy McClarnon, 70, of Shambaugh will be held at 11 am Saturday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Virgil Blosser and Rev Lewis Hunter officiating.

Burial will be Davis Cemetery near Shambaugh.

McClarnon was on a farm southwest of Shambaugh in 1908 and died Wednesday at Methodist Medical Center in St. Joseph, Missouri.  He lived near Shambaugh until serving in the Army during World War II and later lived in Kansas City and Warrensburg, Missouri before returning to Shambaugh.

He is survived by his wife Alleene of the home, one brother, Vernon of Shambaugh, sisters Irene Borden of St. Joseph, Missouri, Mrs. Berniece Moore of Clarinda and Laura Jarvis of Webster City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Leonard, and step-son Charles Allen.

Alleen McClarnon

Shambaugh – Graveside services of Alleene McClarnon, 87, will be Monday at 1 pm at the Davis Cemetery northeast of Shambaugh.  She is to be buried by her husband, Roy, who died April 1979.

Due to ill health, she made her home with her brother-in-law and sister, Biff and Viola O’Hallihan of Kansas City, following her husband’s death.  Mrs. McClarnon died February 9, 1988 in a nursing home in Kansas City.  She would have been 88 on March 14.

Vernon Alden McClarnon

Vernon Alden McClarnon was born on a farm northwest of Shambaugh on January 24, 1902.  He was the son of John Scott and Bessie Beery McClarnon.  Vern passed away September 20, 1984 at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 27 days.  He spent the last month of his life at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha after a long illness.

Vern grew to manhood on a farm west of Shambaugh.  He was married to Miss Delna Patton on September 6, 1925 at the missionary church parsonage in Shambaugh by the bride’s brother- in-law, the later Rev J K Myers.  He lived all his married life the Shambaugh area were he owned and operated the McClarnon Service Station and Service.

He is survived by his wife, Delna, at their home; three sisters, Irene Borden of St. Joseph, Missouri; Bernice Moore of Clarinda; and Laura Jarvis of Villisca.

Other relatives include a niece, Norma Jean Pearson of Webster City, Iowa who lived in Vern and Delna’s home for several years, a niece Ruth Athay of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Gloria Cooper, who lives near Chicago, Illinois.  One nephew, Wayne Borden lives in New Jersey.  There are three great nieces and three great nephews.  There is one aunt, Mrs. Walter Huff and an uncle, Ren McClarnon.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leonard and Roy McClarnon.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 24 at 2:00 pm from the Missionary Church in Shambaugh where he attended faithfully until he became to ill.

Rev Bob Thompson, Vern’s pastor, had the service assisted by Rev Ken Joekel and Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge.

L C McClarnon Body Flown from Clinton

Shambaugh (Special) – Leonard Clark McClarnon, 57, son of Scott McClarnon, died Friday at the veteran’s hospital in Clinton. 

The body was flown to Clarinda Saturday and funeral arrangement made with Walker Funeral Home to hold the services starting at 2 pm Tuesday, with burial in Butler Cemetery.  The Rev Sherman Mills of the Shambaugh United Missionary church will officiate, music will be by Mr. and Mrs. Horace Stone and Mars. Darrell Damewood.  Bearers will include cousins, Virgil McClarnon, Harold McClarnon, Donald Hoskins, Harold Berry, Nick Beery, and Lymoyne Beery.

Mr. McClarnon was born near Shambaugh, July 28, 1906 to Scott and Bessie Beery McClarnon.  He made Clarinda his home, serving several years in the armed forces through World War II.  Returning here, he was carpenter with Floyd Rector until he left about ten years ago to work with a power company at Cedar Rapids.

Vern McClarnon of Shambaugh and Roy McClarnon of Kansas City, Missouri are brothers, and Mrs. Irene Borden of Bethany, Missouri, Mrs. Berniece Moore of Clarinda, and Miss Laura McClarnon of Lincoln are sisters.

Evelyn Berniece Moore

Evelyn Berniece Moore was born June 22, 1913 on a farm near Shambaugh, Iowa the daughter John and Bessie (Beery) McClarnon. She attended Rice country school. She was united in marriage to Al Moore on August 7, 1948. Al preceded her in death in 1959. Berniece passed away December 18, 2007 at Westridge Quality Care & Rehab in Clarinda, Iowa.

Berniece work on the home farm, at Parris & Dunn, Berry Seed Company, and as a nurse’s aide at the Clarinda Hospital.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers: Vernon McClarnon, Leonard Clark McClarnon, and Roy McClarnon; two sisters: Irene Borden and Laura Jarvis; and a niece Norma Jean Pearson.

She is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 21, 2007 at Clarinda Cemetery with Jean Wagoner officiating. Memorials are suggested to Page County Passengers with RSVP. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Scott McClarnon, 95, services Tuesday

Shambaugh – (Special) – Scott McClarnon, 95, who farmed in this vicinity until 1936, died Saturday at the Clarinda Rest Home where he had been making his home for several years.

The funeral service is to be Tuesday at 2 pm from the Walker Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Butler Cemetery besides is wife and son, Leonard.

John Scott McClarnon was born June 8, 1871 on a farm west of Shambaugh to Allan and Mary Berry McClarnon.  He died Saturday November 19, 1966, at the Clarinda Rest Home where he had lived for several years.  He was married to Bessie Beery November 29, 1899.  Children were Vernon, Leonard, Roy, Irene, Berniece, and Laura.

His wife passed away November 25, 1936; son Leonard passed away February 21, 1964.

He is survived by five children Vernon of Shambaugh, Roy of Kansas City, Mrs. Alfred (Irene) Borden of Bethany, Missouri, Mrs. Berniece Moore of Clarinda, Mrs. Charles (Laura) Jarvis of Norwalk, Iowa,; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.  Two brothers are Harry and Ren McClarnon of Shambaugh and is sister Mrs. Kyle (Bessie) McCurdy Braddyville.

He had lived his entire life on farms near Shambaugh until after the death of his wife he moved to Clarinda where he passed away.

While living on the farm he was an active member of the Shambaugh United Missionary Church changing his membership after living in Clarinda.

Rev Sherman Mills will be in charge of the services.  Vocal music will be Horace and Thelma stone and organist will be Doris Damewood.  Casket bearers will be Harold Beery, Lemoyne Beery, Bernard Beery, Donald McClarnon, Harold McClarnon, and Virgil McClarnon

Ren McClarnon Service Wednesday

Memorial services for Mr. Robert Rennie (Ren) McClarnon, 94, of Shambaugh will be at 10:30 am, Wednesday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Ross Keyt officiating.

Mr. McClarnon died August 4, 1985 at Bethesda Care Center after a long illness.

He was born January 19, 1891, near Shambaugh, the son of Allen and Mary Reid McClarnon.

On December 27, 1932, he was married to Elsie Beery who survives.

Mr. McClarnon was a farmer and carpenter, and worked on threshing crews.

Besides his wife at the home he is survived by a son, Don, of Clarinda and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son.

Private burial services well be at Butler Cemetery.

Jake Bonsall

Jake B. Bonsall, 79, died Tuesday afternoon at the Municipal Hospital after several months of illness with a heart trouble.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with the Rev Arthur C Marston officiating.

Mr. Bonsall was born August 31, 1898 at Shambaugh, the son of John and Martha Woodruff Bonsall. He grew up in this area, joining the service in 1917 to served with the Rainbow Division where he was awarded the Purple Heart.

On returning to Clarinda in 1919 he worked with the CB & Q railroad until the railroad was discontinued and then went into the plumbing business with Arthur Lines until his retirement.

He was married to Gertrude Andrews on January 9, 1929. 

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Floyd (Doris) Griffith of Council Bluffs, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, a brother Homer Bonsall of Ulysses, Kansas, and a sister Emma Kier of Council Bluffs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mrs. Delbert (Winona) Yockum, three sisters and two brothers.

Servicing as casketbearers for the services will be Joe Newton, Bill Black, Ray Glassgow, Lee Lucas, George Crawford, and Norval Jones.  Military services will be conducted at graveside with  burial at the Clarinda Cemetery.

Bill Burk died at home Sunday

Funeral Services for W. A. (Bill) Burk, 75, of Clarinda will be at 2 pm, Tuesday at Walker Funeral home with Rev John Clark officiating.

Burk died early Sunday morning, March 6, 1977, at his home at 606 E. Tarkio as a result of a heart condition.

He was born December 23, 1901 at Galveston, Texas , the son of Charles and Nettie Azlien Burk.  On January 1, 1948, he was married to Ruth Beery who survives.

Burk had been supervisor of the garden and lawn at MHI before his retirement.

Besides his wife at home, he is survived by one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sisters, Mrs. Ralph Gourley.

Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Clarinda Pioneer Dies at Hospital

Oliver Gorrell, 74, Succumbs Following Six Month’s Illness

Oliver W Gorrell, 74, died Sunday afternoon at the Municipal Hospital after an illness of six months.

He was born near Clarinda and had lived here all of his life and was a carpenter here for may years until ill health caused him to give up his work.

Surviving are one son, Samuel of Goodland, Kansas; two daughters Florence Weaver and Isabelle Fleck of Clarinda; one brother Allen of Clarinda; one sister Mary of Clarinda.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Walker Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 10 at 2 pm Rev Ellsworth Woods of Clarinda will be in charge.

Burial will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery, where the IOOF lodge will conduct graveside service.

Wanda Herzberg

Wanda Herzberg, 68, of Braddyville, died Wednesday March 8, 1989 at the Gradenview Care Center in Shenandoah where she had been a resident since February 1, 1989.

She was born September 18, 1920 in Clarinda.  Her parents were Glen and Netha (Good) Davison.  She married Robert Herzberg in 1948.  She had worked at the Clarinda Health Institute for 12 years.

Survivors include her husband of the home; six children, Donald Herzberg of Clarinda; Donald Herzberg of Clarinda; Darrell Herzberg of Braddyville; Kirk Herzberg of Clarinda, Mrs. Dave (Janette) Leahy of Ft. Atchinson, Wisconsin; Barbara Hanson of Glenwood and Mrs. Mike (Ellen) Carver of Malvern; 17 grandchildren; three great grandchildren and two sisters, Shirley Searl of Clarinda and Charlene Engstrand of Shambaugh.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 10:30 am at the Braddyville cemetery with Pastor David Renfro officiating.  Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Davison

Mrs. Ruth Davison, 84, of Clarinda died Sunday morning, July 19, 1992 at Goldenrod Manor where she had been a resident for over 8 years.

She was born June 12, 1908 near Braddyville, the daughter of Clyde and Grace Lathrop Johnson.  On October 12, 1927 she was married to Rolla Davison who preceded her in death in 1971.  Mrs. Davison was a charter member of the Pine Community Club and a member of the First Christian Church of Clarinda.

Surviving are two sons, Delmar Davison of Bedford, and Truman Davison of Clarinda.  There are eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  Mrs. Lois Smith of Warrensburg, Missouri, a sister, and Robert Johnson of Tygh Valley, Oregon, is a brother.  She was preceded in death by parents, husband, one great-grandson, brother Merle and sister Opal.

Funeral services will be at 2 pm Tuesday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev John Clark officiating.  Visitation will be from 7-8 pm Monday evening at Walker-Merrick.  Burial will be in the Shearer cemetery near Braddyville.

Nellie Viola Calhoon

Nellie Viola Hamm Calhoon, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Beery) Hamm was born October 8, 1874 in the Pleasant Ridge community east of Shambaugh and after a short illness departed from this life at the Municipal Hospital December 23, 1967 at the age of 93 years, 2 months, and 15 days.

She lost her mother when she was just 11 years old and she became the little mother in her home helping her father raise her younger sisters.

After her rural education she attend Amity College and began her teaching career in an “old soddy” in Frontier County, Nebraska.  Later she taught several years in Page County at the Rice, Butler and Lynn point schools near Shambaugh.

She attended the Methodist Church at Shambaugh through her girlhood and since she enjoyed teaching young children she worked along side her husband for years in the Pleasant Ridge Church and Sunday school and later at the Church of God in Shambaugh.

Her marriage to Eddie Berkey Calhoon, son of David and Mary Berkey Calhoon, was solemnized on February 21, 1901, and into their home was born a son Leonard and a daughter Maurine.

Soon after they observed their 64^th anniversary Mr. Calhoon passed away on March 28, 1965 at the age of 91 and ½ years.

The family made their home on her home farm in Buchanan Township for 43 years, then moved to an acreage in Shambaugh where she helped with the care of her aged father until his death in the 100^th year of his life.  After 17 years in semi-retirement, the y retired to their present home at 424 E Nishna in Clarinda.

Her special delight was in her family, her flowers and her home.  She enjoyed keeping up with current events and was remarkably alert until the very end of her life.

She enjoyed the calls from relatives and friends and especially appreciated the call recently from her 99 year old sister-in-law, Mrs. Alma Beery shortly before Mrs. berry’s death on December 16.

She was such a kind and loving mother and her influence will always be felt in the lives of her family.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by infant twin sisters and her sister Mrs. Anna Stimson Farnsworth on December 10, 1961.

Thos left to cherish her memory are her daughter Maurine in the home, son Leonard and daughter-in-law Catherine of rural Clarinda, grandchildren, David, Stephen and Joan Calhoon at home, Sharon Calhoon attending college in Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Bill (Wanda) Scott, Red Oak, Iowa, Mrs. Dennis (Louise) Flatley of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Leland (Alma) Shell of Boone, Iowa, Mrs. Gary (Deloris) Beery of Shambaugh, Mrs. Gary (Phyllis) Davison of Braddyville, a sister Mrs. Clair (Elise) Perry of Clarinda and 12 young great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephew and may other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were conducted at the Walker Funeral Home, December 26, 1967 at 2 pm.  Officiating clergyman was the Rev Arthur C Marston of Glenwood.  Music was by soloist Mrs. Joan Perry Archer and organist was Mrs. Grace Perry.  Casket bearers were nephews of Mrs. Calhoon, Stanley Stimson, Jacob Stimson, Art Johnston, Fred Stimson, Raymond Perry and Ronald Perry.  Interment was beside her husband in the Clarinda Cemetery

Sam Davison Dies at Braddyville Home

Sam Davison, 75, had to give in to his extended illness this Thursday morning, Sept 12, 1935, passing away at 9 o’clock.  He had been in poor health for a long time, but had been up until a week ago.  His widow survives him, also three children, Ed who had come from St. Joseph to be with his parents, Mrs. Stella Douthit, and Mrs. Dale Laub.  Arrangements for funeral services had not been made early this afternoon.

Mrs. John Davison

Martha Catharine Hockinsmith, only daughter of Henry and Eliza Hockinsmith was born September 20, 1858, at Independence, Missouri, and departed this life at her home in Clarinda, Iowa, July 21, 1936, at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and one day.

She was married to John D. Davison April 22, 1877.  Eleven children were born to the union.  One died at the age of 8 years and another died in infancy.

Davison of Winnview, Colorado; John H, Maitland, Missouri; Charles of Burlington Junction, Missouri; and O E Davison of Charlton, Iowa; also five daughters, Mrs. Luther Williams, Burlington Junction; Mrs. Althea Johnson, Bedford, Iowa; Mrs. Homer Eshelman, Burlington Junction; Mrs. J W Culver, Clarinda, Iowa; and Mrs. Ernest Pearson, Clarinda, Iowa; 34 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; one half sister, Mrs. Lydia Lauhon, St. Joseph, Missouri and one half brother James Kegin, Maryville, Missouri.

At the time of her departure, her nine children with the exception of one son were with her.

She was a good wife and mother, a kind and faithful friend,.  She was patient and her suffering was endured without complaint.

She became a member of the Church of Christ in 1916—thus she attended unto the one thing needful.  She “chose the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

The funeral service was held at the Walker Funeral Home Thursday, July 23, 1936, at 2:30 pm Rive B F Hall officiating.  The music was furnished by Mrs. Carver, and Mr. and Mrs. Hall.  The titles of the songs were “Death is Only a Dream” and “Jesus Lover of My Soul.”

Pallbearers:  the grandsons, Samuel Johnson, Paul Eshelman, Amos Eshelman, Bert H Johnson, Everett Culver and John Culver.

In charge of flowers; granddaughters, Mrs. Etta Staten, Mrs. Minnie Edward, Miss Edith Davison, Mrs. Ora Williams, Mrs. Myra Warrick and Mrs. Zora Orme.

Interment was made in Clarinda Cemetery

Maggie Davison

Maggie Davison, 95, of Braddyville, Iowa died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri, where she had been admitted on Thursday, June 24, 1999.  Maggie was born April 7, 1904 to Kames and Ida McCurdy Dunn.  She was united marriage to Homer Arnold Davison February 23, 1921.  Homer preceded her in death, January 4, 1994.

Maggie enjoyed farm life and raising chicken, selling eggs to many customers who came to the house and since the 1960s she furnished Gray’s Café with 90 to 120 dozen eggs a week.  Her family and grandchildren were very important to her.

Survivors include son, Irvin Davison and wife Virginia of Braddyville, son Arnold Davison and Wife Leona of Braddyville, Iowa, daughter Edna Ruth Thompson and husband Jean of Hopkins Missouri, son Kenneth Davison and Wife Beverly of Clarinda, son Gary Davison and wife Phyllis of Braddyville, Iowa, 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 12 great great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, 7 grandchildren, 3 brothers, Roy Dunn, Emmett Dunn, Elmer Dunn, and one brother in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Friday, July 2, 1999 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.  Visitation will be 7:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday July 1, 1999 at the Funeral home.  Burial will be in Shearer Cemetery, rural Braddyville, Iowa.  A memorial will be established.  Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Elizabeth Davison

Martha Elizabeth Davison, daughter of Robert and Mary Hicks, was born May 6, 1869, near Ladoga, Iowa and departed this life March 23, 1939, at her home in Clarinda at the age of 69 years, 10 months, and 17 days.  Most of her life had been spent in this community.  She married Isaac Davison November 10, 1887.  To them were born ten children:  Pearl, Ruby and Rena living at home, Glen and Olin of Clarinda, Mrs. Mabel Showalter of Wenatchee, Washington, Mrs. Blanche Wilcox and Burl of Loveland, Colorado.  Two children, Gertrude and Marie and her husband and one grandchild preceded her in death.

Besides her family she leaves one sister, Mrya Davison, two brothers Rufus and Elisha Hicks, and sixteen grandchildren.  In the later years of her life she became a member of the Church of Christ.  Her friend and family bear testimony to her Christian faith, her devotion to her family.

Memorial services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, Rev Ellsworth Woods in charge.  Music was furnished by Mrs. Doris Forbes.  Interment was not made until Thursday, awaiting the arrival of the daughter from Washington.  On Thursday, afternoon, short services where held and burial at Memory cemetery.  Pallbearers were Raymon Peterson, Norman Peterson, Lawrence Higgins, Everett Renshaw, Robert Collins, Donald Slump, and Gerald Jones.

Mrs. Allen Davison

Mina Rose Brooks daughter of James and Phoebe Brooks, was born September 19, 1866, in Page county and passed away at her home Clarinda, December 15, 1938, at the age of 72 years.  Most of her life was spent in Page County.

She was united in marriage to Allen Davison, February 18, 1886.  To this union was born one daughter, Essie Pearl.  Her husband preceded her in death on April 30, 1931.

She leaves to mourn her departure, besides her daughter, three sisters, Mrs. Charles Davison and Mrs. Nellie Carmichael of Clarinda, also four brothers, Will brooks, New Market, Smith Brooks, of New Market, Rome Brooks, of Villisca and Albert Brooks of Clarinda, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon with Dr. A B. Thutt of the Presbyterian Church in charge.  Six nephews served as pall bearers, Charles Nelson, Ed Nelson, Donald Davison, Darrell Davison, Roy Davison, and Wilber Davison.  Interment was made in the Clarinda cemetery.

Mrs. Robert Davison

Another instance showing by what a slender thread life is held has been given in the death of Mrs. Robert Davison of Buchanan Township.  She went to Clarinda Tuesday evening of last week, accompanied by her husband, and while their mission was to undergo a surgical operation yet her strength was such that she declined to accept the suggestion of her husband the she ride uptown from the Burlington Route station, saying that she would rather walk.  Thursday, April 15, the operation was performed and the next day she died.  Particulars concerning her career, as follows have been furnished to the Journal for publication:

“Mary Ann Laub, daughter of Mrs. And Mrs. Henry Laub, of Clarinda, was born in Buchanan township, Page County, Iowa, February 6, 1861, and departed this life in Clarinda, Iowa, April 16, 1915, at the age of 54 years, 2 months, and 10 days.  She spent her whole life in Buchanan township. She was married to Robert Davison, February 19, 1880.  To this union eleven children were born, four of whom preceded her to the great beyond.  The following seven children survive her Bertha Vide, Robert Roy, Homer Arnold, Dicie Anna, Wilber, Rolla Raymond, and Virgil.  She is survived by her husband, by her father and mother, and also by five sisters and three brothers.  A host of friends unite with her relatives to mourn their loss.  When a girl she united with the Methodist Episcopal church.  She was loved by all who knew her.

The funeral services were held in the Shearer church, on Monday, April 19, at 11 o’clock and were conducted by Rev Roy W. Thomas, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at Braddyville.  The Pall Bearers were her three sons, Robert, Homer, and Wilber; her brother, George Laub, and her nephews, Archie Laub, and Clarence Carr.  The burial was in the Shearer Cemetery.

The bereaved family thank all their neighbors and friends for their kindness to them in their sorrow.”

Bernice Finley Carter

Bernice Finley Carter was born near College Springs, Iowa, March 20, 1888, and passed away February 4, 1941, aged 52 years, 10 months, and 15 days. 

She was united in marriage to Robert M Carter on March 10, 1909 to whom eleven children were born one of whom died in infancy.

The early years of her life were spent in Page County, Iowa, where she received her education, attending high school and college in College Springs, Iowa.  After which she taught in the rural schools nearby.

In early life she united with the United Presbyterian Church at College Springs, Iowa.  After moving to Palisade, she attended the Methodist Church.

The early years of her married life were spent in Burlington Junction and Unionville, Missouri.  The family moved to Palisades in the fall of 1915.

She leaves behind her husband, Robert M Carter, her children, Will of Brooklyn NY, Keith and Leslie of Washington, DC, Coleen of palisade, Carol of Oakland California, Evelyn of Denver, Colorado, and Eloise, Frank, and Shirley of Palisade, also her mother Belle Finley; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Cagley and Mrs. Florence Huddle all of Clarinda, Iowa

Leonard Jacob Calhoon

Leonard Jacob Calhoon, 84, died at the Clarinda Municipal hospital Tuesday, April 16, 1996.  Leonard was a native pf Page County, born to Eddie and Nellie Hamm Calhoon in the Pleasant Ridge Community northeast of Shambaugh.  He was a 1929 graduate of Clarinda High school.  He enjoyed music, sang, and played the cornet in the Major Landers Pleasant Ridge Band. 

Leonard married Catherin Murren on January 23, 1934, and raised a family of nine children.  Most of his life was spent as a farmer and blacksmith in the Hawleyville community and he did custom farm work throughout southwest Iowa.  Leonard and Catherin retired from the farm in 1976 and made their home in New Market.  They spent several winters in Mission, Texas.  He was a 4-H leader, served on the Extension Board, the Hawleyville Rodeo Board and numerous community activities.  He was a member of the Methodist Church in New Market.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Maurin, a daughter, Louise Flatley and one grandson.

Survivors include his wife Catherin, his children, Mrs. Bill (Wanda) Scott of Red Oak, Iowa, Mrs. Leland (Alma) Shell of Madrid, Iowa, Mrs. Gary (Deloris) Beery of Clarinda, Mrs. Gary (Sharon) Dennis Council Bluffs, Iowa, David and his wife Della Calhoon of Clarinda, Stephen and his wife Wanda of Greeley, Colorado, Mrs. Jim (Joan) Card of Red Oak, a son-in-law Dennis Flatley of Spring Texas, 24 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 19, 1996 at 11 am at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda, with burial in the Clarinda Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 am Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorials have been established to the United Methodist Church in New Market or the New Market Rescue Unit. Robert Crook

Robert G Crook, 63, whose wife was the former June Hamm of Clarinda, died February 13, 1975 at a Council Bluffs Hospital where he have been a patient since January 16.  He has served as Atlantic postmaster for 15 years.  He had been born in Wisconsin and came to Atlantic in 1939, prior to his World War II experience.  He was married to Miss Hamm in 1941.

Services were held Sunday in Atlantic with Rev John Lippincott officiating.  Military gravesides services were in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Nellie Mary Thompson

Nellie Mary Thompson was born February 23, 1895 at Greenville, Tennessee of parents Jacob F and Edna E Thompson.

The family moved to a farm in Iowa near Shambaugh where she met and married Herbert L Hamm.  To this union five children were born.  They farmed in Page County for their entire active life and their children grew up in this area.  Upon retirement, they moved to 103 N Vine in Glenwood, Iowa where they resided for a few years.  Then moving to Juniata, Nebraska where their daughter and family attended them in their later years.  Nellie became ill and resided the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings, Nebraska for the past year. Her husband passed away in October of 1975.  She passed away on 8-21-76 at the age of 81 years, 5 months, and 28 days at Hastings, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert L Hamm, a son, Donald D Hamm, and, a son, Darrell C Hamm.

Left to mourn her passing:  a son C. Glenn Hamm of Glenwood, Iowa, a son Ermal H Hamm of Decatur, Illinois, a daughter Juanita a Scott (Mrs. Harold) of Juniata, Nebraska, and a daughter-in-law Mrs. Darrell (Lillian) Hamm of Glenwood, Iowa, 12 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren; a brother Ottie Thompson of Clarinda, A brother Owen Thompson of Clarinda, a half sister Mrs. Minnie Johnson of Clarinda, and a host of other friends and relatives.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Mrs. Florence Jones, Mrs. Lydia Anderson, Mrs. Emma Crawford and Minnie Thompson, a brother Arthur Thompson, and a half brother, Clark Thompson.

William E Hamm

William Ellis Hamm, the son of Christian and Elizabeth Hamm was born May 28, 1960 in Davis County, Iowa, and passed away at his home in Shambaugh, Iowa, February 27, 1941, at the age of 80 years, 8 months, and 29 days.

On December 18, 1897, he was united in Marriage to Abigail Davis at Clarinda, Iowa.  To this union was born six children:  Lenna Twaddle of Coin; Mabel Dalrymple of Clarinda; Lepha Maxwell of Braddyville; L D and D O Hamm of Braddyville.  His wife preceded him in death February 20, 1937, also one grandson, Harry Hamm.

He has left to mourn his death his six children, 24 grand children, and 15 great grandchildren; two sisters, Belle Woodruff of Oklahoma, Kate Beery of New Sharon, Iowa; three brothers, Charles of Clarinda, Jacob and Jess Hamm of Shambaugh, and many other relatives and friends.

The family expresses their sincere appreciation to all who have been kind and helpful; for each expression of sympathy; and for the beautiful flowers.

The services were held Sunday, March 2 at the Walker Funeral Home, conducted by Rev Brown assisted by Rev Yeager.  The singers were Mr. and Mrs. Horace stone, with Miss Ruth Starkey at the piano.  The pallbearers were grandsons, Clifford, George, Eldon and Maurice Hamm, Beryl Good, and Harold Maxwell.  The flower girls were Nola and Wanda Hamm, Alice Snodderly, Ann Guenther, and Esther Denney.

 Harold D. Hamm

Harold Dean Hamm of 2363 Sparrow Loop Road, Kelso, Washington, died November 4, 1985 at the local hospice at the age of 72. 

He was born January 4, 1913, at Clarinda, Iowa to Harley D and Ethel Jane Davison Hamm, and came to this area from Oregon 25 years ago.  In recent years, he wintered in Indio, California where he is survived by many friends

Mr. Hamm was retired from Prudential Insurance after 35 years in sales and management. 

He was a past member of the Cowlitz Underwriters Association and had been active in the boy scouts for many years.  He was also an avid sportsman and fisherman.

Surviving him are his wife, Helen Z Hamm, at home, three sons, Jarold D. Hamm of Kelso, Clarke R Hamm of Arlington, Washington, and Roger A Hamm of Longview; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services are 1 pm Wednesday at the Kelso First United Methodist Church in Kelso.  The Rev Norman Williiams will officiate.

Wanda Hamm

Miss Wanda A Hamm, 69, of College Springs died Monday afternoon at the Methodist Center in Omaha, Nebraska where she had been taken Sunday Evening.

She was born October 31, 1919, at Shambaugh, the daughter of Douglas and Ada Reed Hamm. 

Miss Hamm had been postmaster at College Springs for over 25 years.

She is survived by four brothers and one sister:  George Hamm, Iowa City; Eldon Hamm, Pierce City, Missouri; Kenneth Hamm, Warsaw, Missouri; Robert Hamm and Mrs. Don (Marthelia) Freeman both of Clarinda.  Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held this Thursday Morning at Walker-Merrick Funeral  Home with Rev Brian and Rev Sue Ellen Sherman and Rev Leon Lebuda officiating.

Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery at New Market.

Memorials may be directed to the College Springs Community Center or the Shambaugh United Methodist Church.

Mrs. W. E. Hamm

Abigail Marthelia Davis, daughter of George and Eliza Davis was born April 10^th, 1861, near Shambaugh, Iowa and passed away at her home in Shambaugh, February, 20, 1937, at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 10 days.

On December 18, 1879, she was united in marriage to W. E. Hamm.  Six children were born to this union, Lenna Twaddle of Coin, Mabel Dalrymple of Shambaugh, Lepha Maxwell of Clarinda, L. D. and D. O Hamm of Braddyville.  She has left to mourn her going her husband, six children, 22 grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren, three nieces and a host of dear friends.  Her father, mother, three sisters and one grandson, Harry Hamm, preceded her in death.

At the age of 13 she accepted Christ as her personal Savior.  Some years later she united with the Free Methodist Church in Shambaugh.

She lived a consistent Christian life, was a patient sufferer, and remained true to her faith until the end came.  She will be missed as a devoted companion, a loving mother, and grandmother.

Tuesday services for Hamm, 96

Mrs. Lydia Hamm, 96, of Clarinda died Friday morning, June 11, 1982, at the Goldenrod Manor where she had been a resident for the two years.

She was born on February 13, 1886 at Clearmont, Missouri, a daughter of Noah and Mary (Good) Huddle.  She married L. D. (Jim) Hamm on Dec 26, 1910.

Survivors include Clifford Hamm of Shenandoah,. Mrs. Earl (Alice) Gordan of Holiday Island, Arkansas, Arlo Hamm of Clarinda, and Mrs. Norris (Beulah) Gates of Shenandoah.  Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.  A sister is Eva Anderson of Mesa, Arizona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda.  The Rev Charles Bulger and Dr. J.D. Almes will officiate.  Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Jolene Marie Hamm

Jolene Marie, daughter of R. Arlo and Helen Hamm, was born at Clarinda, November 28, 1949, and departed this life on March 14, 1959,  at the tender age of nine years, three months and 13 days.

She was the youngest of three daughters.

Jolene’s first three years were spent at Clearmont, Missouri, were the family made their home.  She attended school her first two years at McKinley and was in the third grade at Lincoln this year. She was especially interested in swimming and made many young friends through this interest.

Jolene was active in Blue Bird Girls.  She showed talent for music and took piano lessons from Mrs. Grace Perry.  She was in Nina Newman’s Sunday school class at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church.

Jolene’s sunny smile and sweet disposition will be greatly missed by all who know her.

Besides her parents she leaves two sisters, Connie and Beverly, and brother-in-;law Gary; her paternal grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. L D. Hamm of Clarinda and a host of relatives and friends.

Jolene touched many hearts, young and old, and left renewed faith and deep understanding to those dear and near to her.

The memorial services were held March 16, at 2 pm at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Dr. J. D Almes officiating.  Myron Johnston, soloist san “Jesus Loves Me,” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus,” accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Grace Perry.

Bearers were Raymond Culver, Joe Combs, J C Combs, John Johnston, Edward Higgins, Paul Swanson Jr. and J A Depew.  Honorary bearers were Darrell C Davison, J A Depew, Rex Laub, Bill Lindsay, Ivan Johnson, Fred Rhoads, and Ed Butler.

The flowers were cared for by Barbara Combs, Julane Isaacson, Beverly Duncan, Patty James, Leona Burroughs, Mrs. Richard Warneke, Mrs. Al Pfander Jr., Mrs. Don Farrens, Janet Snodderly, Sharon Sunderman, and Deanna Nelson.

 Interment was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Bruice Bonsall was with Rainbow Division

Bruice A Bonsall, 68, died at the Clarinda Municipal at 8:50 pm Saturday, after a lingering illness of many months.  He had been cared for in his home, but was taken to the hospital three days before his death.

He was the son of John and Martha Bonsall, and was born on a farm near Shambaugh.  He had lived in the Clarinda for the past 50 years.  He worked as a plumber for many years, retiring only when his health made it impossible for him to continue with the work.

He was a veteran of WW I, enlisting in the Army, May 21, 1917, and serving in Company F, 168^th Infantry, which gained fame as the Rainbow Division.  He left the United States to go overseas October 18, 1917, and returned April 25, 1919.  He received his Army discharge May 17, 1919.

He was married to Katherine Trautman on November 17, 1919, at Clarinda.  He is survived by his wife; four children, Rev Allen Bonsall, Murchinson, Texas, Mrs. LaVon (Vera) Herzberg, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mrs. Keith (Janice) Wilson, Clarinda, and Mrs. William (Martha) Martin, Parksville, Missouri; two brothers, Jake B Bonsall, Clarinda, and Homer Bonsall, Ulysses, Kansas; two sisters Mrs. Clyde (Emma) Kier, Council Bluffs, and Ina Woodruff, of Clarinda.  He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm Tuesday, with the Rev John L Beebout in charge. Music will be by Margaret Grossman.  Casket bearers will be Marlon Hashberger, D D Sloan, Wes Irvin, Mason Williams, Charles Baler and Everett Shaw.  He was a member of American Legion Sergy Post Number 98, and member of that post will conduct the military graveside services.  Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established with the American Heart Association.
