Selway, Sylvia Kelly -

Sylvia Selway passed away peacefully July 6, 2005 in Danville, California. Sylvia was born October 22, 1910 in Fremont County, Iowa, near Shenandoah. Her parents were William Meminger Kelly, and Martha Elizabeth (Bess) Patton. After completing high school in Sidney, Iowa, Sylvia taught in a rural school for two years. She moved to southern California in 1937 with her oldest sister, Margaret, and then met and later married Roscoe (Ross) N. Selway on March 8, 1941. For the rest of her life Sylvia was a devoted homemaker, living first in Alhambra, California, then moving to Redlands, California, in 1973, and finally moving north to Danville, California in 2001, to be near her stepson and stepdaughter-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband Ross Selway; brother, Work Kelly; two sisters, Margaret Kelly and Ethel Whitehill.

Sylvia was a lifelong Methodist, joining the Summit Church as a child in Iowa, and maintaining an active membership at churches in Alhambra and Redlands, California. Sylvia and Ross had no children of their own, but Sylvia became a loving stepmother to Ross’ two children. She is survived by her stepchildren, Laura Joanne Sanchez of Seal Beach, CA and David Selway and wife Sara of Danville, CA; three step-grandchildren, Laurie Sanchez, Daniel Selway and Jane Buethe; three step great grandchildren; nephews, Dick Kelly and wife Mary Jo of Estes Park, CO, Jim Kelly and wife Janet of Lincoln, NE, John Whitehill and wife Kathy of Lincoln, NE, Merrill Whitehill and wife Linda of Shenandoah, IA, and Gary Whitehill of Marion, IA; nieces, Roena Shey of Shenandoah, IA and Marilyn Whitehill of Lakewood, CO; many grand, great grand and great great grand nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, October 8, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at the Summit Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Bryson officiating. Inurnment followed at the Locust Grove Cemetery. Memorials are being directed to the Summit Methodist Church or to the Locust Grove Cemetery. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

 

Sheridan, Merle Elwood -

Merle Elwood Sheridan was born May 9, 1918, in Gravity, Iowa to Don Howard Sheridan and Hester Elizabeth (Hummel) Sheridan. He spent the early part of his life in the Shenandoah and Essex, Iowa areas. He graduated from the Essex Community School in 1937.

On November 21, 1939, Merle was united in marriage to Grace Dale Corey in Maryville, Missouri. The couple resided in the Shenandoah and Essex area. On June 5, 1945, Merle joined the United States Army and served until June 29, 1946. Merle was a mechanic for Jim Ahlgren’s Chevrolet Garage and later for Smith Olds. He then bought the Snap-On Tool business in the late sixties and retired in 1984. Grace passed away in early 1990 following a lengthy bout with cancer. On October 27, 1990, Merle was united in marriage to Betty R. Christianson at the First Christian Church in Shenandoah. Merle was a longtime member of the American Legion. He was an Elder and Trustee in the Essex Presbyterian Church, a school board member, a member of the Farmers Telephone Board and an Essex Housing Board member. Merle was very fond of the outdoors. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, camping and traveling.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Grace; brother, Don Sheridan; two sisters, Lois Streitenberger Jackson and Marjorie Wells; and a grandson, Billy Brannen. He is survived by his wife Betty of Essex, Iowa; daughter, Barbara Brannen and husband Jerry of Humboldt, Nebraska; son, Kenneth Sheridan and wife Marlene of Essex, Iowa; six grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; three step-children, Jim Christianson of Hesston, Kansas; David Christianson and wife Mary Ann of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Danny Christianson and wife Debbie of Shenandoah, Iowa; seven step-grandchildren and 12 step-great grandchildren; along with a host of other family and friends.

A memorial service was held Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Karen Bash. Attending the memory register was Carol Franks. Ushers were Glen Confer and Glen Morelock. Organist was Pat Larson. Music selections were "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". Honorary casket bearers were Jeff Sheridan, Leslie Sheridan, Jerome Brannen, Robert Brannen, Jennifer Taylor and Amy Cardwell. Military Rites were given by Weatherall-Hadden-Holmes American Legion Post #333 of Essex, Iowa. Inurnment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah, Iowa. Simmons, Vivian Lucille Whitehill - Vivian Lucille (Whitehill) Simmons was born May 21, 1911 in Fremont County, Iowa to Vern and Amy (Barton) Whitehill. She passed away April 25, 2005 at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 93.

Vivian spent all her life in the Summit, Iowa area. She graduated from Farragut High School and later attended Peru State College where she received her teaching certificate. On June 27, 1937, she was united in marriage to Sterling Simmons at her parent’s home. The couple continued to reside in the Summit area.

Vivian spent her life as a homemaker. She was a member of the Summit United Methodist Church and the MS Club. She taught Sunday School and was a sponsor of the MYF for many years. Vivian also did a lot of volunteering at the Garden View Care Center and had made many-many lap robes. Vivian enjoyed her grandchildren and following their activities.

Vivian is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sterling; infant son, Robert and brother, Hershel Whitehill. She is survived by her son, Bill Simmons and wife Kay of St. Joseph, MO; granddaughter, Kelly Martinez and husband Dennis of Springfield, MO; grandson, Scott Simmons of Minneapolis, MN; granddaughter, Krisanne Bradley and husband Mike of Beverly Hills, MI; great grandchildren, Blair Martinez, Lane Martinez and Ben Bradley; a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 28, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at the Summit Methodist Church in rural Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Fred Bryson. Pianist was Margaret Woods. The congregation sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee". Attending the memory register and caring for the flowers were Fran Tyner and Marguerite Teachout. Casket bearers were Tom Lynn, Bill Tyner, Roger Jones, Gordon Jones, Mack Teachout and Mike Hamilton. Skalberg, Rita Regan -

Rita Skalberg, daughter of Thomas and Bertha (Saner) Regan, was born on May 11, 1918, in rural Imogene, Iowa. She passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2005, at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 87.

Her early life was spent in the Imogene area. Rita received her education from St. Patrick’s Academy in Imogene, graduating with the Class of 1935. On April 15, 1941, Rita was united in marriage to Raymond Skalberg at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Imogene. Following their marriage they farmed near Essex, Iowa. Rita taught school at Honey Creek country school for several years. In 1953, they moved to Walker, Minnesota, after buying a motel there. In 1955, following the purchase of the Sunset Motel, they moved to Corning, Iowa. Rita was instrumental in the everyday running of the motels. In 1993 after the death of Raymond, Rita moved to Shenandoah. Rita was active in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, serving on the Altar Society. She loved to fish (but was known to never catch much) and play cards with family members. Rita was also a great bowler.

Preceding Rita in death were her husband, Ray Skalberg; parents; four brothers, Mike, Thomas, Jerome and Edward Regan; and four sisters, Lucille Hughes, Helen Hughes, Margaret James and Gertrude Eggers. Survivors include her son, Donald Skalberg of Creston, Iowa; two brothers, Robert “Doc” Regan of Imogene, Iowa, and Kenneth Regan of Norfolk, Nebraska; one sister, Jean Martin of Carroll, Iowa; numerous loving nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial services were held Friday, December 30, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Celebrant was Rev. Vern Smith and lector was Ed Regan. Mary Beth Gowing played the organ and Jane Emge was the vocalist. Eucharistic Ministers were Kathy Regan, Jamie Regan and Jason Regan. Trish Regan and Rose Welchans attended the memory register. Altar servers were Madison and Alexis Saner. Ushers were Andy Regan and Jerry Regan. Casket bearers were Dan Kaiser, Jude Hughes, Terry Regan, Jim Martin, Kirk Hughes and Michael Regan. Smith, Eva May Strange Mutchler -

Eva May Smith was born November 23, 1922 in Rock Port, Missouri to William Strange and Bessie (Huff) Strange. She passed away July 6, 2005 at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 82.

Eva was united in marriage to Royal E. Mutchler on July 15th, 1941. She was remarried February 16, 1967 to James Smith. Eva had lived in Shenandoah since the late 1930’s. She had worked at various times for Celia Simons Nursing Home, Mt. Arbor Nursery, Lakes Nursery and Garden View Care Center. Eva enjoyed fishing, camping and playing bingo and cards .

Eva is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Oscar, Floyd, Allen and Frank; sisters, Mary Weaver, Bessie Miller and Margaret. She is survived by her daughter, Dianna Bennage of Shenandoah, Iowa; son, Edward Mutchler and wife Shirley of Essex, Iowa; daughter, Linda Hilker and husband Marty of Shenandoah, Iowa; son, Alfred Mutchler and wife Tammy of Shenandoah, Iowa; 17 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; brother, Harold Strange of Villisca, Iowa; sister, Jane Evans of Clarinda, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 8, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Marcia Campbell. Casket bearers were Cody Tunnell, Casey Tunnell, Shawn Wilburn, Curtis Mattox, Roy Mutchler, Kevin Mutchler, Jeff Seering and Gary Fichter. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Smith, Warren E., Jr -

Warren Eskew Smith, Jr., son of Warren Eskew Smith and Opal Elizabeth Lewis Smith, was born on April 9, 1923 at Shenandoah, Iowa and passed away at Sidney, Iowa on November 11, 2005 at the age of 82 years, 7 months, 2 days. He grew up in rural Shenandoah, attending Lone Star Country School. He lived at the family farm until moving to the Sidney Ambassador Care Center. “Junior”, as he was known to family and friends, enjoyed the farm, gardening, raising cantaloupe and watermelons, and reading his bible daily. Junior was a member of the Church of the Nazarene for a number of years.

Preceding Junior in death were his parents; brother, John Smith; nephew, Mark Smith; and nience, Nancy Sondag. Survivors include his three sisters, Joyce Sondag and husband William of Bellevue, Nebraska, Beth Ullsperger and husband Raymond of Douglas, Nebraska, and Maribel Beery and husband William of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother Jack Smith and wife Dorothy of Shenandoah, Iowa; a sister-in-law Edith Smith of Tabor, Iowa; nieces, nephews; other family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2005, at the Shenandoah Church of the Nazerene. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. S. T. Taylor. Pianist and soloist was Sandy Hilding. Musical selections were Green, Green Grass Of Home", Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere" and "Peace In The Valley". Casket bearers were Michael Beery, William Harvat, Jim Harvat, Michael Harvat, David Smith and John Smith. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Spears, Paul L. -

Paul L. Spears, son of Andrew T. and Hettie Mae Spears, was born July 14, 1910, at the family home in Fisher Township. Fremont County, south of Shenandoah, Iowa where he grew up. He attended country school and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1929.

Paul was united in marriage with Blanche Thompson on January 1, 1936 and to this union two sons, Thomas and Robert were born. They lived on a farm south of Shenandoah from 1947 until 1955. They also owned a home in Phoenix, Az. where Blanche and the boys lived nine months of the year because of health reasons. Paul would commute back and forth to keep the farming operations going. Blanche passed away in January 1979.

After retiring and turning the farming operations over to his son Tom, he married Margie Foley in July, 1986. They lived on the farm in the summer and in Arizona in the winter. He continued to help Tom with planting and harvesting until he was 91 years old, always driving the combine in the fall. Besides his love of farming, he enjoyed playing golf and all the social activities associated with the sport.

Paul was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge 1122, and the Masonic Lodge in Shenandoah. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Lodge and the Moila Shrine Lodge in St. Joseph, Missouri. Also he was a member of the Shenandoah County Club and the Fountain of the Sun Country Club in Mesa, Arizona.

Celebration of life memorial services were held on Friday, December 2, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Fred Bryson. Attending the memory register was Jo Powe. Organist was Margaret Woods. Special music was "Amazing Grace" and "When The Saints Come Marching In". Inurnment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

 

 

Stephens, Marvis Eileen Johnson -

Marvis Eileen Johnson was born August 15, 1917 in rural Shenandoah, Iowa to Carl Alfred Clarence Johnson and Alice (Maxwell) Johnson. Marvis passed away August 21, 2005 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 88.

Marvis spent the earlier part of her life on the farm she was born at between Shenandoah and Essex. She attended school at Pleasant Hill Rural School from 1st through 8th grade. She then attended Shenandoah High School and graduated in 1935.

Marvis was married to Carl W. “Short” Stephens on March 31, 1937 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The couple resided in rural Shenandoah for over 40 years. They moved to Shenandoah in 1980.

Marvis was employed by Leacox & Redfield Drug Store before she was married. After her children were past the 4th grade, Marvis worked part time at China & Glass, Hansen Jewelry, Henry Fields, Kitchen Klatter and many times as the church secretary during vacation times. She was a member of the Country Guild, Town Guild, Charter member of Nishna Valley Saddle Club, Athenaeum Club, First United Methodist Church, Class of 1935 Lunch Brunch and the Maxwell Cousins monthly meetings. Marvis was membership secretary of the First United Methodist Church for over 40 years and organized the rummage sale for Missions Commission for 17 years.

Marvis is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl “Short” Stephens in September 2004; daughters, Phyllis Hein in 1999 and Rozann Stephens in May 2000; sister-in-laws, Ardella Johnson, Garnet Feil and Ida Witherall and her son-in-law, Otto Jacoby.

She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Stephens of New York City, NY; son, Carl Jr. “Bill” Stephens and his wife Lynda of Shenandoah, IA; son-in-law, Paul Hein of Murfreesboro, TN; grandsons, Steve & Mindy Hein of Sioux City, IA., Michael & Judy Hein of Murfreesboro, TN., Tracy Hein of Murfreesboro, TN., Ludlo Stephens & Stacie Cox of DesMoines, IA and Lindsey & Jennifer Stephens of Shenandoah, IA; great grandsons, Tony Hein, Mitchell Hein, Grant Hein, Matthew Hein, Eric Hein, Payton Stephens and Kassidy Stephens; brother, G. Carrol Johnson of Essex, IA; brother-in-law, Austin Martin Feil of Texas; many Johnson, Maxwell and Feil relatives as well as Stephens and Akeman relatives in and around Slater, MO; and a host of friends.

A memorial services was held Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Pastor James Gubser. Beatrice Nelson attended the memory register. Special music included, "Softly And Tenderly", "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" and "Irish Lullaby". Valentine, Doris Esther Boan - Doris E. Valentine, daughter of William Perry and Hazel Marie Vickers Boan, was born on August 19, 1923, at the family home west of Tabor, Iowa. Doris lived on farms in Fremont County, attending a country school in Knox, and graduating from the Sidney High School with the Class of 1940. She attended nursing school at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. On August 28, 1940, she was united in marriage with Herbert McCollum in Glenwood, Iowa. They were the parents of four children, Royal Lee, Thomas Dixon, Susan Elaine and Lorrie Lee. They made their home in Glendale Acres near Council Bluffs, Iowa. Herbert passed away on December 23, 1971. Doris taught Sunday school at a small church near Thurman and also was a substitute teacher for the public school system. During World War II she made for radio crystals. Other places of employment were Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Hand Community Hospital, Clarinda Municipal Hospital, Vicker's Hardware and Earl May Seed and Nursery Company. On May 17, 1973, she was united in marriage with Vince Valentine at Norwich, Iowa, and they made their home in Shenandoah. She was a member of the Southwest Iowa Poultry Association, serving as a judge for the American Bantam Association. Doris was interested in reading, gardening, canning, babies, dogs, her show chickens, and flowers. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed all her family getting together.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Garnet, Phyllis and Aravella; brothers, Lloyd and Perry; her first husband and a great-granddaughter Brittany Steinbach. She is survived by her husband Vince Valentine; sons, Royal McCollum and his wife Debbie of Villisca, Iowa, Tom McCollum and his wife Barbara of Coin, Iowa; daughters, Susan Barnes and lifelong friend Jeff Knudson of Griswold, Iowa and Lorrie Beck of Wamego, Kansas; stepchildren, Janice Page and Dave Valentine, both of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a brother, Pat Boan of Acton, California; special friend, Phyllis Shields of Essex, Iowa; twenty grandchildren; twenty four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held from the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah on Monday, October 27, 2003, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Marcia Gilbert Campbell giving the words of comfort and also serving as vocalist. Musical selections were "Beyond the Sunset", "You're Still Here" and " The Old Rugged Cross." Attending the memory register was Phyllis Shields. Caring for the flowers were Amy Most, Shannon Ayres, Sarah Steinbach, Loris Jones, Annie Wingard, Beth Hill, Jenny Diederich, Shawnette Barnes, Bobbi Jo McCollum and Katie Barnes. Casket bearers were Matt McCollum, Tommy McCollum, Clay Barnes, John McCollum, Andrew McCollum, Tim McCollum, Wyatt Barnes and Jason McCollum. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Voitenko, Evelyn Mae Keith -

Evelyn Mae (Keith) Voitenko was born September 20, 1925 in Colby, Kansas to Edwin “Abbie” Keith and Alta (Mallory) Keith. She passed away April 24, 2005 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 79.

Evelyn spent her childhood in Colby, Kansas and graduated from Colby Community High School in 1943. On September 6, 1945 she was united in marriage to Peter Voitenko in Denver, Colorado. The couple resided in Shenandoah, Iowa since 1957. Evelyn worked at Mount Arbor and Henry Field Seed & Nursery doing clerical work.

Evelyn was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and the VFW auxiliary. She enjoyed golfing and playing bridge, attending the horse races at Aksarben, playing the slot machines at Bluffs Run Casino, reading mystery novels, working crossword puzzles and watching CNN.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Dorothy and Veda and brother, Jerry. She is survived by her husband of nearly sixty years, Peter; son, Thomas and friend Sandy Neal of Lake Ozark, MO; daughter Maureen Kelpe and husband Henry of Omaha, NE; daughter, Jana Voitenko and husband Tim McIlvoy of Plainfield, IL; son, Mark of Independence, MO; brother, Harley and wife Ruby of Napoleon, FL; grandsons, Bret and Ryan Voitenko, Aaron McIlvoy and Joel Kelpe; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Celebrate for the service was Father Tim Vann. Attending the memory register was Patsy Martin. Usher for the service was Ralph Braymen. Organist was Mary Beth Gowing and soloist was Jane Emge. Special music was "He" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee". Burial of cremains will take place at a later date. Westberg, Carolyn Stephens O'Neil - Carolyn Stephens Westberg, daughter of James and Annie Lee (Baker) O’Neil, was born on July 14, 1923 in Gadsden, Alabama. She passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2005 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska following a lengthy bout with lung cancer.

Her early life was spent in Alabama and later in Mississippi. She graduated from high school in Jackson, Mississippi. Following high school, she attended the Mississippi State College for Women. In March of 1943, Carolyn was united in marriage to Dwight L. Westberg in Columbus, Mississippi. Following their marriage they resided in the states of California, Texas and Kansas during Dwight’s time in the service. In 1951, they moved to a farm near Essex, Iowa and in 1959, they moved to Shenandoah where Dwight became one of the founders with Dr. Gene Lloyd of the Vet-A-Mix Corporation. Carolyn was a busy homemaker raising three children, Carol, Tom and Craig. She was very devoted to her family and their interests. Carolyn enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and also liked to read in her spare time. She was a member of the Shenandoah First Presbyterian Church and also a member of a bridge club.

Preceding Carolyn in death were her parents and a sister, Sally Yates. She is survived by her husband, Dwight L. Westberg of Shenandoah, IA; three children, Carol of Vermont, Tom of Massachusetts and Craig of Colorado; four granddaughters, Caitlin of Massachusetts, Lia of Vermont, Lara of California and Kristin of Oregon; and grandson, Eric of California. Also surviving are her brother, Harold O’Neil of Texas and sister, Marjorie Moreman of Florida; along with other relatives and many friends.

Memorial services were held Monday, January 17, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Rick Sleyster. Organist was Loreen Burrichter. Congregational Hymns were "Bless Be The Tie That Binds", "Amazing Grace" and "Morning Has Broken". Attending the memory register were Dorothy Cambier and Doris McNeilly. Ushers were Dan and Gloria Sullivan and Lee and Virginia Gingery. Burial of cremains will take place at a later date at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Nyman, Iowa. Woods, Edward Alvin -

Edward Alvin Woods, the son of Eugene and Mabel (Kammerer) Woods, was born at home in Imogene, Iowa on March 19, 1921. He passed away August 20, 2005 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 84.

Ed attended school in Imogene, Iowa. He enjoyed watching birds at his feeders, watching wrestling and the Braves on T.V., going to coffee with friends at Mondos, listening to country music and collecting miniature cars. He also liked fishing and bowling. Ed had a good sense of humor.

Edward is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles, Albert, John and Lester Woods and sisters, Elizabeth and Ida. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Woods of Shenandoah, IA; children, Karen Smith of Frankfort, IN; Lloyd Carter and wife Charlene of Essex, IA; Byron Carter and wife Tina of Coin, IA; Ruby Strange and husband Russell of Shenandoah, IA; Darrell Woods of Colorado Springs, CO; Edna Hugh of Hawarden, IA; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers, Allen Woods of Pennsylvania; Earl Woods of Red Oak, IA and Merle Woods of Shenandoah, IA; and a host of friends.

Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2005, at the Monroe Township Cemetery near Imogene, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Paul Brigham. Musical selections were "In The Garden", "Daddy's Hands", "Angels Among Us" and "The Dad He Didn't Have To Be". Casket bearers were Glen Sheirbon, Robert Clark, Adam Maher, David Hughes, Emmett Hughes and Lucas Hughes. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah was in charge of the arrangements. Kuhlman, Dorothy Alice Moore Yates - Dorothy Alice Moore - Yates - Kuhlman was born September 28, 1909 in Shambaugh, Iowa to Ernest Faye and Mae (Neal) Moore. She passed away June 4, 2005 at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 95.

Dorothy attended country schools in Shambaugh and Braddyville, Iowa. She was united in marriage to William Thompson Yates in September of 1940. She farmed with her husband in the Farragut, Iowa area. The couple spent the winters in Harlingen, Texas. Twenty-two years ago and after the death of William, Dorothy moved to Shenandoah. She remarried William Kuhlman of Clarinda, Iowa.

Dorothy was a member of the Farragut United Methodist Church, the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and various card clubs. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking for her family and friends, visiting and dining out with friends and giving to charitable organizations.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husbands, William Yates and William Kuhlman; her parents; brothers, Richard Moore and Connard Moore; sisters, Ruth Kellogg and Nina Faye James; and step-daughter Mildred Russell. She is survived by sister, Virginia Walcott of San Leandro, CA; brother, Alexander Porterfield Moore of Raton, NM; stepson, William Yates Jr. of Rancho Mirage, CA; step- daughter, Veda Austin of Jackson, MS; two grandchildren and one great grandchild; special friend, Martha Yates of Shenandoah; several nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home is Shenandoah, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Fred Bryson. Attending the memory register was Thelma Dowell. Soloist, Rev. Moody Colorado, sang "The Lord's Prayer". Other special music was "On Eagle's Wings". York, William Samuel "Sam" -

William Samuel “Sam” York was born November 17, 1922 at home south of Farragut, Iowa on his grandfather’s farm. His parents were Perry A. and Blanche L. (Pierce) York. He attended Centennial Country School and then Farragut High School, where he enjoyed being in school plays. He graduated at the early age of sixteen.

After trade school in Lincoln, Nebraska, Sam worked in an aircraft factory in Baltimore, Maryland.

Sam married Evelyne P. Adkins on November 3, 1943 in Hiawatha, Kansas.

Farming was his life. He started farming with his father, then rented land and a small farm for four years. In March, 1951 they moved northeast of Essex and farmed there 37 years. He was a pioneer implementing narrow row crops. His self propelled combine and portable grain drier were firsts in the area. He also did custom harvesting in the area.

Sam and Evelyne retired to the town of Essex but he still helped with the farming until his health failed. Sam entered the Stanton Care Center in May, 2003.

Sam enjoyed farming, and loved working with the soil and improving the land by terracing. Raising livestock was a big part of his life.

Sam and Evelyne enjoyed traveling, taking tours, and square dancing with Pairs & Squares dance club. They helped start the Essex Senior Center and he loved playing bingo and the good meals they served. Their two dogs Baby and Pud brought “Grandpa” much joy.

His children and grandchildren were very important to him. He liked attending their sporting events and helping with 4-H projects. His great grandchildren always brought a twinkle to his eye.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Richard and Everett. Sam is survived by his wife Evelyne of Essex, IA; three children, Karon “Tomboy” York of Omaha, NE, Kieth and wife Carol, and Bill and wife Nancy of Essex, IA; four grandchildren, Janine Dailey and husband Rick of Essex, IA., Gary York and wife Mindi of Essex, IA, Jill Swanson and husband Bob of Shenandoah, IA and James York and wife Tara of Omaha, NE; five great grandchildren, Zachary, Alex and Elise Dailey and Keely and Samantha York; numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 24, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Harold Peterson. Words of remembrance were given by Glen Brink. Musical selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace". Attending the memory register were Maxine Chastain and Charlotte New. Caring for the flowers were Harold and Arlene Phipps and Verla Christensen. Honorary casket bearers were Janine Dailey, Gary York, Jill Swanson, James York, Zachary Dailey, Alex Dailey, Elise Dailey, Keely York and Samantha York.
