Geer, Roberta Humphrey - Roberta Humphrey Geer was born in Clarinda, Iowa, on January 26, 1919. She passed away in Pleasanton, California, on December 21, 2007. The almost eighty-nine years between her birth and death were full of family, church, celebrations and challenges of all kinds - and that was the way Roberta planned it and wanted it.
Roberta grew up in Clarinda, Iowa, one of six children of Leo and Susanne Richardson Humphrey. After high school, Roberta went to Texas to live with her father, who worked as a pharmacist in Brady. However, the lure of Iowa farmland and thoughts of a young farmer brought her back to Clarinda. Shortly thereafter, Fred Geer and Roberta Humphrey married and began their lives together.
A year after marrying, Fred and Roberta were blessed with Dennis, their son, and four years later with Meta, their daughter. While Fred farmed, Roberta worked at the Clarinda Junior College and the State Mental Health Institute in addition to raising her children and making a home for the family. When Fred passed away suddenly in December, 1967, Roberta pulled up roots and moved back to Irving, Texas, where she worked at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. She lived in Irving for the next twelve years.
Retirement and the opportunity to live closer to her daughter and grandsons took her to Pleasanton, California, where she spent the last seventeen years. Senior activities, church duties and over 4000 hours of volunteer work at Kaiser Permanente kept her busy and involved. However, her greatest love was her three grandsons and her six great grandchildren. Michael Thomas Gress, Mark Fred Gress and Matthew Steven Gress kept their grandmother aware of the world around her and the many things she needed to do to be “Hip.” Her great-grandchildren: Justin Michael Gress, Colby Ryan Gress, Benjamin Jack Gress, Tucker Robert Twomey, Flynn Riley Twomey and Sadie Marie Perigny, kept her looking toward the future and savoring the joy they brought to her every day.
Throughout her life, Roberta made and kept many friends, was devoted to her God and always kept her family in the forefront of her thoughts. Thomas Paine wrote, “Reputation is what men and women think of us; character is what God and angels know of us.” Those of us who are left behind know that God and angels will think notably of Roberta.
In addition to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Roberta is survived by her son, Dennis F. Geer of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and her daughter, Meta K. Gress of Gardnerville, Nevada, and their spouses.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Robert Keefer officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. Pall bearers included her three grandsons: Michael Thomas Gress, Mark Fred Gress and Matthew Steven Gress; Leo Humphrey, her nephew; Lowell Geer, her nephew, and Richard Adkins, her son-in-law. A memorial service for her many friends will be held in Pleasanton, California, early in January.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Bruns House, a part of Hospice of the East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Avenue, Pleasant Hill, California 94523. To leave online remembrances or condolences with the family, go to www.selbykirsch.com. The Selby-Kirsch Funeral Chapel of Shenandoah was in charge of arrangements.

Gentry, Gladys Nadine Pierson - Funeral services for Gladys Gentry, age 89 of Charleston, Arkansas, formerly of Clarinda, Iowa, who died Monday, April 7, 2008 at Ft. Smith Hospital, Ft. Smith, Arkansas, were held Monday, April 14, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hillside Missionary Church with Pastor Brian Bontrager officiating. Visitation with the family was held prior to the service at the church. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Service of Clarinda, Iowa.
Gladys Nadine Gentry was born March 8, 1919 in Shambaugh, Iowa. She was the daughter of Floyd and Florence (Johnston) Pierson. Gladys was the oldest of seven siblings. She graduated from Clarinda High School and attended McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas. She spent some time working in Des Moines and Omaha before locating in Long Beach, California. While in California, she went to school and achieved her L.P.N. license. Gladys worked at Long Beach Memorial Hospital after graduation.
In 1961, she met and later married Howard Gentry. They lived in Lancaster, California, where Howard, with Gladys’ help, raised chickens. Gladys also worked at the Lancaster Community Hospital. In 1965, they were granted the opportunity to adopt a baby boy, Stephen Howard Gentry. They enjoyed and loved this baby boy. Tragically, Howard and Stephen were on their way from the babysitter, when they were broadsided by a drunk driver, killing Stephen. It was indeed a dark hour for them. Even though there was no reason or understanding for this unfortunate event, God had other plans for Gladys and Howard.
In June of 1967, they were blessed with another baby boy, Thomas Charles Gentry. They attended the First Nazarene Church of Lancaster and became involved in raising this wonderful boy. They sold their ranch and moved to Lincoln, Arkansas. Gladys became involved in church activities including bus trips with the Lincoln High School Marching Band with her son, Tommy. Thank you Gladys, for bringing Tommy into this family, he is such a treasure and welcome addition.
As Tommy grew, graduated and started life of his own, Gladys wished to come back to Clarinda to be with her family. Howard agreed and they sold their property and moved to Clarinda. Gladys and Howard attended the Hillside Missionary Church in Clarinda while they were able to do so. They lived in Clarinda for thirteen years before Howard passed away in September, 2005. Gladys had grown weary and Tommy took her home to live her last days with him and her grandchildren. Tommy contributed greatly to this very difficult time in Gladys’s life. His wonderful sense of humor and warm and caring attitude made her smile and made her happy.
Gladys wore many hats, in her 89 years of life; she was a good daughter, a loving sister, a devoted wife, a dedicated mother, an adoring grandmother. She was a caring nurse, a trustworthy friend, but most important, a born again Christian. She entered into eternal rest on April 7, 2008.
Preceding Gladys in death were her husband, Howard Gentry; her infant son, Stephen Gentry; parents; brothers, Leo and Wayne Pierson; sister, Mildred Knizely; great niece Marci Straley.
Left to remember Gladys, to think of her fondly and to smile at the special moments we each shared with her are her son, Thomas Gentry of Charleston, Arkansas; grandchildren, Logan and Morgan (who loved her very much) of Charleston, Arkansas; brother, Cleo Pierson and wife Gerry of Paramount, California; sisters, Grace Forbes of Clarinda, Iowa, Marvel Sedlock and husband Gene of Calimese, California; a host of nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
Gladys is in heaven now reunited with Howard and her parents and siblings, perhaps sitting at the feet of Jesus. We must remember that this is the goal for each of us and that we should not wish her back, because we miss her. We will revel in the knowledge that we know she had a relationship with Jesus and is safe in His arms. This is our comfort and hope.
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled
and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you.
