Giles, John Lyon – John Lyon Giles was
born at Basking Ridge, Somerset county, New Jersey, Feb 22, 1827, died
at his home on 19th St., Clarinda, Iowa, at 1:30 am, Jan
30, 1901, age 73 years, 11 months, 8 days. Mr Giles was married June
20th, 1848 at Mt Gilead, to Miss Susan Merrick, a native
of Harrison county, Ohio. About the year 1854 they moved to Iowa and
settled in Mahaska county, near Oskaloosa, where he engaged in farming.
In 1867 he moved to Page county and engaged in farming again. A few
years later he sold his farm and engaged in the livery business which
he followed successfully for 22 years, when owing to ill health he sold
out barn and stock, thinking a few months’ rest would enable him
to regain his former good health, but alas, in this he was disappointed,
for during the last three years of his life he has been an invalid.
On the 14th of September he received a stroke of paralysis
which affected his right side, from that day until his death he was
in a helpless condition. During his sickness he was one of the most
patient and non-complaining, appearing to be resigned to his fate. They
have had four children, Joanna is the wife of William Wamsley, now residing
5 miles east of Clarinda. George M., residing near Asherville, Kansas.
Florence E. is the wife of John H. Reeves, residing near Guss, Taylor
county, Iowa. And John F., who died at the age of 3 ½ years. Mr Giles
was converted at the age of 15 years and united with the M.E. church.
For many years after he grew up to manhood he took a very active part
in the church and Sabbath School, serving as class leader, superintendent
etc. He expressed himself quite freely many times as having no fears
of the future, which to his friends is a real comfort, for his sufferings
were intense, especially the last four months. He was a kind and affectionate
father and husband and always provided well for his household. His death
was triumphant. Being an old settler in the county he was well known
and his many friends extend their sympathy to the bereaved wife and
children. Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at the home
by his pastor, Rev IlgenFritz, after which the remains were taken to
Old Memory for burial.

Gray, Geo. – Geo Gray died this morning
about 3 o’clock. He had been around his repair shop all day and
on the streets last evening. The cause of his death is said to have
been heart trouble, induced by strong drink. He had been warned by his
physician to let it alone but failed to heed the advice. He had not
indulged to any great extent last evening. George was about 50 years
of age. Page County Democrat, Clarinda, Iowa, Feb 9, 1905
Another Sad Death - Yesterday morning the startling news was passed around town to the effect that George Gray was dead. He was around at his work on Wednesday as usual and in response to a telegram met a friend at the station about 8:30. He was living at the home of Mrs. Mary Hall and during the night it was discovered that he was seriously ill and Frank Pennington, his partner in the shop, was sent for and Dr. Killingsworth was called as quickly as possible. All that could be done under the circumstances was done to alleviate his pain and when the doctor left an hour or so later the indications were that the sick man would come out of his trouble as he had in the past. About 5 o'clock however, it was discovered that he was dead. There is little to be said in connection with this sad case except as a warning to men who are so unwise as to yield to their appetites for the love of strong drink. George Gray was a man of splendid impulses and when the writer of this first knew him as a young man, he was a steady, energetic and industrious young man with a bright futute before him. He really had more than ordinary business ability and there was no reason why he should not have made a splendid success of his life, but like thousands of others who
gave way to the desire to drink and the other evils that come in its train, he was fastened within the grip of this mighty destroying force until his life during the past ten years has been a burden to himself and a disgrace to his relatives. In all of his troubles, however, he had many friends who, remembering his good qualities were disposed to overlook his terrible dissipation and maintain not only business but friendly relations with him.
George Gray learned ihis trade and was a successful carriage builder in Burlington, Iowa, and came to Clarinda with John Glazeby to establish a carriage factory about 22 or 23 years ago. Since he went out of the carriage business he has been doing repair and other odd jobs but as usual the man who gives away to his appetite is sadly going in the wrong direction. He will be remembered here as a man of excellent qualities but lacking in that one essential, the ability to control his appetite, and his influence in the community will not be such as to appeal to the pride of anyone.
The wife of his youth left him several years ago, taking with her the only child, a son, and they now make their home in Burlington.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock at the church, conducted by the
Christian pastor. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Feb 10, 1905
E. G. Gray of Burlington was called to this city last week by the sudden death of his father, Geo. Gray. Edwin is at present in Chicago attending a business college. He is a bright and business like young man. PAGE COUNTY DEMOCRAT, Clarinda, Iowa, Feb 16, 1905
An inquest was held over the body of George Gray, Thursday morning and death was found due to intoxicating liquors. The jury was composed of Charles Skinner and J. H Whitehill and Will Jackson. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Feb 10, 1905 |

Groeling, Juliana Schmidt – Mrs Juliana
Schmidt-Groeling was born in Pussia [this does not say Prussia], Germany,
Dec 15, 1813, and died in North Clarinda, Wednesday evening, June 11,
1902. She was married to John C. Groeling in 1843, and they resided
in Germany until 1853, when Mr Groeling decided there would be better
opportunities for their sons in Uncle Sam’s domain, and they emigrated
to this country locating in Wisconsin. The climate being too cold for
him there, he sold out and in 1857 removed to Des Moines county, Iowa,
where they resided until the civil war broke out, and he soon after
enlisted. In 1863 he became sick while on a campaign in Alabama, and
was ordered to the hospital, but died suddenly before reaching there.
All this time Mrs Groeling kept the family together, and in the fall
of 1867 they located in Page county, the oldest son having gone ahead
to build a home and start improvements on the farm purchased the spring
before in Douglas township. Mrs Groeling is the mother of seven children,
two of them dying in infancy, and the other five surviving her, three
of them now in Page county—John, and Mary, the wife of Wm Ottte,
and Mrs Otielda Sierp; while Hermann, and Francis, wife of Geo. H. Bosse,
both live in Knox county, Neb. In the long recollection of these children
they never knew of their mother being sick until the past ten years,
and during that time afflictions have been many with her. About ten
years ago she was stricken with pneumonia; two years later she fell
down stairs breaking her arm and severely bruising her head and should
which caused her much pain; a few years later while visiting her children
in Nebraska she was thrown from a buggy and sustained a broken arm,
and after being home a month or so she was again thrown out of a buggy
and severely bruised; about two years after it became necessary to remove
a cancer from her nose, and the same year she was once more stricken
with pneumonia; last fall she fell and broke her arm again, and last
winter had a rib cracked by falling on the floor. But in all her tribulations
never a word of complaint was uttered, and seldom gave utterance to
suffering—always cheerful and forbearing. She trusted in the Lord,
believing that what He did must be for her good. Her fie motto was:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
She had it hanging over her head so she could always see it. But she
is gone. No more will we hear her kind words or see her loving face;
but her memory will always be dear to us. The funeral took place Friday,
June 13th, at 10 am, from the German Lutheran church northwest
of the city.
