Moroni Snively (1850-1938)

M. Snively --  Moroni Snively, son of Hugh and Elnora Stevenson Snively, was born near Evanville, Ind. March 21, 1850.  He came to Iowa when about 21 years of age, spending the rest of his life in and near Braddyville.

            He was married to Mary Elizabeth Henderson, March 25, 1874. To this union nine children were born, namely, Mrs.Francis Bloom, deceased, Nov 25, 1937, Ms. Elnora Hiles of Elmo, Mo, Mrs Lillie Squier, Mrs Aden Carver and Frank L of Clarinda, Ia, Lorenzo G of New Market, Ia, Mrs Etta Runyan of College Springs, Ia, Mrs Mabel Townsend of Braddyville, Ia.  There are also 28 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.  The wife and mother passed from her earthly home Aug 6, 1931.

            On Monday, January 24, he was stricken with a paralytic stroke, and a second one on Wednesday, January 26, passing away Monday, Jan 31, 1938, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jesse Townsend, after just one week of fatal illness.  Thus his going has called home the last of a family of seventeen children, also the last on the early settlers of this community, having lived 87 years, 10 months and 10 days.  In his early life he was converted and continued this faith in our Lord and Master, spending much time in the study of the Bible.  His last words were “All is well.” (Clarinda Herald Journal, February 3, 1938)

Mary Elizabeth Henderson Snively (1855-1931)

Mrs. M. Snively --  Mary Elizabeth Henderson, the second child of Stewart and Rachel Burkey Henderson, was born in Keokuk county, Iowa, June 12th, 1855.  A few months later she came with her parents to this county, where she lived until her death on Aug. 6th, 1931.

            She was married to M. Snively of Hopkins, Mo., March 25th, 1873.  To this union nine children were born:  Mrs. Jas. Bloom, Mrs. A.J. Squier, Mrs. D.E. Carver, all of Clarinda, Iowa; Mrs. Lester Runyan of Bloomfield, Nebr.; Mrs. Chas. Hiles, Mrs. Jesse Townsend, Ren Willis and Frank Snively of Braddyville, Ia., all of whom were present at the time of her death.  She also leaves 28 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn their loss.

            She united with the Christian church at Braddyville 31 years ago and lived a true Christian life.

            The funeral services, held in the Christian church at Braddyville, were conducted by Rev. Kitchen of Hamburg.  The pallbear(er)s were grandsons of the deceased, granddaughters acting as flower girls.  Interment was in the Braddyville cemetery.

Etta Alvina Snively Runyan (1889-1976)

Saturday services for Etta Runayn --  Funeral services for Etta A. Runyan, 86, of 815 South 16th, were held at the Clarinda Memorial Chapel Saturday, Rev Ted Conway and Rev Ray Draper officiated.  Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

            Casket bearers were Gail Cavin, Lester Kuhlman, Harold Runyan, James Runyan, Stanley Runyan and David Sunderman.  Mrs Ray Draper was the soloist with Mrs Herman Linke at the organ.

            Mrs Runyan, a resident of Clarinda since 1953, died at the West Heights Manor Thursday after a lengthy illness.  She was born March 4, 1889, in soutern Page County.  The daughter of Marion (Moroni) and Mary (Henderson) Snively, she was the only remaining Snively survivor.  She married Lester Runyan May 30, 1906, at Clarinda and she and her husband farmed in Texas, Arkansas and Iowa.  She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Clarinda.

            She is survived by three sons, Keith of Edwards, Mo, Ross of Bloomfield, Neb, and Marvin of Conway, two daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Pauline) Cabbage of Clarinda and Mrs Eva Belle Hill of Cheyenne, Wyo, 22 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

            She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, three brothers and five sisters. (Clarinda Herald Journal, Feb 16, 1976)

Lester Lewis Runyan (1886-1970)

Lester Runyan, 83, died here Saturday --  Lester Runyan, 83, died at the Municipal Hospital Saturday morning after being admitted Thursday.

            Services were held this Monday afternoon at the Lavelle Funeral Home with the Rev Ray Draper and the Rev. Don Comstock officiating.  Burial was at the Clarinda Cemetery.

            He was born Dec 13, 1886 at Coin, the son Mr and Mrs John Runyan.  He was married on May 30, 1906, to Etta Snively at Clarinda.  They lived in Texas and Arkansas before moving to the Clarinda area in 1935.  They moved to Clarinda in 1953.

            He was a member of the Church of God in Shambaugh.

            He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Mrs Mary Ruth Kuhlman, one sister and one brother.

            He is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs Melvin (Pauline) Cabbage of Clarinda, Mrs Gerald (Eva Belle) Hill of Denver, Colo; three sons, Keith of Maryville, Ross of Bloomfield, Neb, and Marvin of Conway; 22 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

            His six brothers are G W of Texhoma, Oklahoma, Frank of Sprinfield, Mo, Tom of Clarinda, Fred of Portland, Ore, Guy of Hollywood, Calif, and John of Laguna Hills, Calif.  One sister, Mrs Clarence (Lillie) Burford lives at Fowler, Kansas.

            Grandsons served as pallbearers:  Rev James Runyan, Harold Runyan, Stanley Runyan, Lester Kuhlman, David Runyan, Roy Sunderman, and David Sunderman.  Honorary pallbearers were Leland Bunting, Roy Ropp, Loraine Hughes, Walter Geer, Charley Geer and Harve Miller.

            Carmen Clement was the vocalist, accompanied by Mrs Herman Linke.
