Taylor, Ann Adele Pendergraft - Ann Adele Taylor, 65, of Hepburn, Iowa passed away Thursday afternoon, June 11, 1998 at Clarinda Regional Health Center following an extended illness. She was born Friday, February 3, 1933 at Clarinda to Ralph and Genevieve (Johnson) Pendergraft.
After graduating from Immanuel School of Nursing she was married to Griff E. Taylor on July 1, 1954 at New Market. After they were married she and her husband traveled with his career in the military. In 1972 the two lived in Bellevue, Ne and Ann worked for the Methodist Hospital and Richard Young hospital. Ann and Griff then moved to Hepburn in 1975 where she worked for the Mental Health Institute and then as head nurse for the prison. She stayed on as the head nurse when the Clarinda Correction Facility opened. She retired from her nursing career in April 1997.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph. She is survived by her husband, Griff; children Patricia Taylor of Memphis, Tn, Jeffrey A. Taylor, Wellsville, Ks, Pamela S. Alexander, Gravity, Ia, Lynda J. Taylor, Clarinda and Lori J. Barr, North Carolina; mother, Genevieve Pendergraft of New Market; brother Joel Pendergraft and his wife Jo Krin, Paducah, Kentucky; sister, Kay Samler and her husband Jake, Bakersfield, Ca; ten grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Taylor, Dana E. - Dana E. Taylor, 95, of Clarinda, Iowa died Wednesday evening, September 30, 1998 at Goldenrod Manor where he had been a resident for the past year. Dana was born April 21, 1903 in Greene County, Tn to Noah and Delphia Whitehead Taylor. He was married to Oreana McAlpin December 20, 1922, who preceded him in death, May 20, 1981.
Dana married Margaret Hamilton, Nobember 21, 1981, who survives. He was an active business man and farmer. Dana built and owned the Clarinda Super Value Store, clerked auctions and was a cattle buyer.
He is survived by his wife Margaret of the home; children: Velta Stalder of Clarinda, Iowa; Ronald Taylor and wife Judy of St Louis, Mo; step children: Janice Chapman and husband Craig of Reston, Va; Marcia Fuller and husband William of Augusta, Ks; Paul Hamilton and wife Beth of Elmo, Mo; Elinor Hamilton of Council Bluffs, Ia; Julia Nutt and husband Roland of Curtis, Ne; 20 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
Dana was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Oreana; son Ivan Taylor; two brothers, Burt Taylor and infant Orgie Taylor.

Taylor, Oreana McAlpin - Funeral services for Mrs D.E. (Oreana) Taylor, 75, will be at 2 pm Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Carl Cummings officiating.
The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 7:30 - 8:30 pm this Thursday evening.
Mrs Taylor died Wednesday morning at Bedford Manor in Bedford where she had been a resident for the past three years.
She was born Aug 9, 1905, near New Market, the daughter of Earl and Osie Combs McAlpin.
In 1922 she was married to D.E. Taylor who survives. She had lived in the New Market and Clarinda areas all of her life.
Besides her husband of New Market she is survived by three children: Mrs Alvin [Velta] Stalder of Clarinda, Ivan Taylor of San Diego, Ca, and Ron Taylor of St Louis, Mo. There are 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Brothers are Max McAlpin of New Market and Bill McAlpin of Red Oak.

Teeters, Kenneth I. "Red", 64, of northeast Kansas City, Mo, a native of New Market, died April 25, 1985 at Veterans Hospital in Kansas City.
He was born in New Market and had lived in Kansas City for 26 years. He was a fitter and welder for the Havens Steel, Co, before he retired. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a Mason and a member of the Ararat Shrine, the Scottish Rite bodies and the Loyal Order of Moose.
He is survived by his wife, Edna, of the home; two sons, Richard Teeters of Omaha and David Teeters of Marlow, Ok; two daughters, Mrs Marsha Chambers of Redding, Ca, and Mrs Karon Yeatman of Valdosta, Ga; a stepson, Russell Samuelson of Kansas City; two brothers, Darrell teeters of New Market and Dale Teeters of Omaha; two sisters, Mrs Beulah Culver of New Market and Mrs Katherine Reed of Hershey, Ne; and eight grandchildren.

Teeters, LeRoy F., 44, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Douglas County Hospital in Omaha at 6 pm Saturday, June 15, after being stricken with a heart attack at his home at 1323 S. 4th St., a few minutes earlier.
Mr Teeters was a native of Taylor county, born near New Market, the son of John L. and Mae Teeters. He grew to manhood in the New Market vicinity, and received his education in the New Market schools. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the European theater of that war. He met and married his wife, the former Maria Ferrari, while in Italy during the war.
He is survived by his wife, Maria, and six children, Mary Lou, Dennis Kent, Susan Maria, Terry Dean, Judy Ann and Jimmy Lee, all of Omaha; three brothers, Kenneth Teeters, Kansas City, Dale Teeters, Omaha and Darrell Teeters, New Market; two sisters, Mrs Beulah Culver, Bellevue, Nebr, and Mrs Katherine Reed of Cortland, Nebr. Also by father and mother, John and Mae Teeters of New Market.
Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda, Tues., June 18, with Preacher Clarence Potter in charge. Graveside military services were conducted by the New Market American Legion Post. Burial was in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Thompson, Ethel Kelso, 98, of Clarinda, died Sunday morning, Aug 28, 1994, at Goldenrod Manor, where she had been for the past one and a half years.
She was born Dec 15, 1895, in Taylor County, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Dora Jane Jobbins Kelso. She graduated from high school and taught country school before her marriage to Harve Thompson on Jan 20, 1920, they farmed south of New Market before moving to Clarinda in 1974. Mr Thompson died June 19, 1979.
Mrs Thompson is survived by four children: Mrs Emory (Doris) Hardee Jr, Bedford, Max Thompson, Mt Home, Ar., Mrs Gerald (Rosalie) Gray, Union, Mo., and Mrs Donald (Virginia) Hullinger, Glendale, Az. There are 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Darrell Thompson; five brothers; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be 1:30 pm Thursday, Sept 1, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev David Miller officiating.

Thompson, Ethel Mae Graham Croy - Graveside services for Ethel Mae (Croy) Thompson, 65, of Riverside, Ca, will be at 10 am Thursday at Clarinda cemetery, with Rev John Clark officiating.
Visitation will be at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home from 7-8 pm on Wednesday.
Mrs Thompson died Friday, May 29, 1987, at Riverside Community Hospital.
She was born Sept 17, 1921 at Yorktown, Ia, the daughter of Charles Henry and Frances Irene (Davis) Graham.
She had been a beautician in California.
Survivors include four children, Sue Keiser, Riverside, Ca, Mrs Don (Connie) Everhart, Houston, Tx, Mrs Jerry (Sonja) Bill, Bellflower, Il, and Ronald Dean Croy, Woodbridge, Va. There are 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her mother is Frances Graham of Placentia, Ca. Brothers and sisters are Pearl Osburn, Placentia, Ca, Mrs Odas (Lucille) Lilly, Clarinda, Opal Lee, Portland, Or, and James Graham, Clarinda.
She was preceded in death by her father and a son.

Thompson, Merrill A. - Merrill Thompson, age 84, of New Market, Iowa, passed away Monday, April 23, 2001, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa, where he had been a resident the past two weeks. Funeral services were held 1:30 pm, Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Loren Daly officiating. There was a visitation with the family 7-8 pm Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to New Market Ambulance or New Market Community Center.
Merrill A. Thompson was born September 22, 1916, in Taylor County, Iowa to Henry Ernest Thompson and Hazel Maude (Hutchinson) Thompson. Merrill was a 1935 graduate of New Market High School. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Radke February 12, 1938 in Clarinda, Iowa. Merrill was a life long farmer and in addition he worked at the lumberyard in New Market, Iowa and also worked with Bill Horton in carpentry.
Survivors include his wife Elizabeth of the home, daughter; Ruth Elaine Hunolt and her husband Tony of Griswold, Iowa, son; Merrill Dean Thompson and his wife Rose Mary of New Market, Iowa, daughter; Kathy Ann Pulliam and her husband Les of Clarinda, Iowa, 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Thorne, Richard Murvel - Richard Murvel Thorne, aged 7 years, 9 months and 9 days, passed away Thursday afternoon at the home of his mother, Mrs Bertie Thorne. His father, Theodore Thorne, preceded him in death two years, leaving with his mother his small brother Bobbie and sister Bonnie to mourn the loss of their little "sweetheart," whose short life was one of suffering and pain and who is now peacefully sleeping awaiting the great resurrection promised to all. Thorne, Theodore - Siam, Jan 15--The funeral of Theodore Thorne, who passed away Tuesday, Jan 10, at his home in Siam was held in the Methodist church, Thursday, January 11 at 1 pm, conducted by Rev Ernest Young of Shambaugh. Mr Thorne had been a patient sufferer for the past 18 months. And all that loving hands could do was done for him. He leaves his young wife and 3 small children, to gather together the broken threads of life and go on, with the hope of joyous meeting on the shore of Eternity. Todd, Crystal Combs Spring - Funeral services were held Sunday at the New Market High School auditorium for Mr and Mrs Ermal (Crystal) Todd, victims of an auto accident near Stockton, Kans, Thursda. Te Valley Township couple had been vacationing in the Black Hills and Colorado and were en route home when the accident occurred. Glen Mitchell was in charge of the service. Aletha L. Hutchings was organist.
The Todds were married July 12, 1960 [sic, Apr 5, 1962] living on the farm near Villisca.
Mrs Todd, the former Crystal Maxine Combs, was born Oct 1, 1916, on a farm north of New Market and was graduated from the New Market High School in 1934. She was married Dec 31, 1937 to Glen E. Spring who preceded her in death in 1960. She leaves two children, Gary and Joyce; a daughter-in-law Loleta, and two grandchildren, Jeffrey Glenn and Melanie Lynne of New Market. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs Sylvia Combs of New Market; a brother, Neil Combs of Gravity; a sister, Mrs Harold (Jean) Hartman of New Market. Her father, Harry Combs, died in March of 1964.

Crystal Maxine Todd, daughter of Sylvia and Harry Combs, was born Oct 1, 1916, on a farm north of New Market. She departed this life Aug 18, 1966, following an accident at Stockton, Kan, at the age of 49 years, 10 months, and 17 days.
She attended grade school at Glassgow School, north of New Market and graduated from New Market High School in the class of 1933. She worked at Clark's Store in New Market while in school and for a time after graduation.
She was united in marriage to Glenn E. Spring Dec 31, 1937. To this union two children were born, Gary and Joyce. Crystal and Glenn lived on farms near Siam, Hawleyville and New Market. Glenn died July 12, 1960, and Crystal moved to Clarinda, working for some time at Hawley Drug.
On April 5th, 1962 she was united in marriage Ermel Todd of Villisca.
Crystal was a member of the New Market Church of Christ. She was treasurer of the church and could always be counted on to help in Bible school, camp, youth activities, and any other task she was called upon to do.
She was a member of the Valley Sunshine Club during the time she lived in the Frog Valley Community. She also belonged to a rural women's club near Villisca. She was not just a member on a book, but was always faithful in attendance.
She greatly enjoyed working among the flowers that bloomed abundantly in her house and garden. She loved the outdoors and at every opportunity was working among God's growing things. An even greater interest was the concern for others. She delighted in being able to help any relative, neighbor, friend, or down and outer who might pass by. Many have testified to the help and encouragement received from her hands.
She loved her children with a true mother's love and this was extended even more to her grandchildren. Her devotion was unflagging and whenever word was received of sickness her response was instant. Her first query in talking over the phone would be "How are the kids?"
Crystal is survived by her daughter Joyce Elaine Spring of Clarinda, her son Gary Wayne, his wife Loleta and two grandchildren, Jeffrey Glenn, and Melanie Lynne of New Market. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs Sylvia Combs of New Market; a brother, Neal Combs of Gravity and a sister, Mrs Harold (Jean) Hartman of New Market. She also leaves many uncles, aunts, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father in March, 1964.
She was always helpful to her mother. She was a devoted wife and generally when Ermel was seen Crystal would be close by. As a mother she was without peer for her family were the bright lights in her life and her thoughts were never far from them. Both Ermel and Crystal were dearly loved by all who knew them and their passing will leave a great vacancy in the hearts of family and community.
Funeral services were conducted from the New Market High School auditorium at 2 pm Sunday, Aug 21, 1966, with Preacher Glen Mitchell in charge. Organ music was by Aletha L. Hutchings. Troxel, Basil J. - Basil J. Troxel, 72, of New Market, died Sunday, May 8, 1994, at Municipal Hospital after several months' illness.
He was born Jan 15, 1922, in Hays County, Neb, the son of John C. and Artie L. Harrah Troxel. He married Helen M. Eads on Aug 17, 1940.
Mr Troxel had been a farmer, operated a service station in New Market and drove a school bus for several years. He retired from employment at MHI [Mental Health Institute]. He was a member of the New Market Church of Christ. After retirement he made wood crafts and attended craft shows.
Mr Troxel is survived by his wife Helen at home and six children: Mrs Gilbert (Karon) Burch of Braddyville; Mrs Claire (Joann) Woodruff of Troy, Mo; Mrs David (Sharon) Flanagan of Des Moines; Larry M. and wife Connie Troxel of New Market; Janice M. Kibbe of Corning; and Norris L. Troxel of New Market. There are 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Brother and sister are: Moss Troxel of Keytesville, Mo, and Mrs Doyle (Naomi) Kime of Jamesport, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, three sisters and a daughter-in-law.

Troxel, Helen Monona Eads - Helen M. (Eads) Troxel, age 82, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Friday, July 11, 2003, at the Westridge Care & Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Graveside services were held 11:00 am, Monday, July 14, 2003 at Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa with Loren Daly officiating. Visitation with the family was 10:00 am until service time Monday, July 14, 2003 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Clarinda Ambulance Service.
Helen Monona Troxel born August 12, 1920, in Davis County, Missouri, near Jamesport, the daughter of Emmett "Lee" Eads and Blanch (Collier) Eads. She attended country school in the Jamesport, Missouri area. Her family moved into Jamesport in 1936. Helen worked in people's homes until her marriage. She was united in marriage August 17, 1940 to Basil John Troxel at Gallatin, Missouri and he proceded her in death May 8, 1994. They moved to rural Red Oak in 1950 and then near New Market where they farmed until 1968. Helen and Basil moved to New Market where they bought the Glines Gas Station and operated it as Troxel Conoco for 10 years. She also worked at the State Hospital for 28 years. Helen moved to Clarinda in 1997. She loved to quilt and enjoyed having company as well as playing card games and reading.
Preceding Helen in death were her parents; husband; infant son John; grandson, Matthew Woodruff; brothers, Robert Lee Eads and Grover Eads and Trudy Eads. Survivors include her children Karon Lee Burch and husband Gilbert of Braddyville, Iowa; Joann Woodruff of Maryville, Missouri; Sharon Kay Flanagan and husband David of Des Moines, Iowa; Larry Mack Troxel and wife Connie of New Market, Iowa; Janice Mae Kibbe of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Norris Lynn Troxel of New Market, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; brother, David Eads and wife Jean of Marshall, Missouri; brother, James Mack Eads and wife Ellie of Orlando, Florida; sister, Martha Elizabeth Munson and husband Wayne of Hermitage, Missouri; sister-in-law, Olive Troxel of Keytesville, Missouri; sister-in-law, Naomi Kime and husband Doyle and son Eugene of Jamesport, Missouri. Turner, Margaret E. Miller - Mrs Margaret E. Turner, 78, of Clarinda died Thursday evening at her home.
She was born July 21, 1910 at Sigourney, Ia, the daughter of Cap and Nettie Martin Miller. She was a 1932 graduate of the University of Iowa journalism school. In the same year she married Clinton H. Turner, who was a longtime Clarinda attorney. Mr Turner preceded her in death in 1969.
Mrs Turner is survived by two sons, Thomas W. Turner of Rohnert Park, Ca, and Stephen M. Turner of Greenwich, Cn. There are four grandchildren. David Miller of Seattle, Wa, is a brother. Also surviving is a cousin, Dr John Martin of Clarinda.
Funeral services were held this Monday morning at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev Mark Witmer officiating.
Burial was in Clarinda Cemetery with Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Turpin, Elijah Young - Elijah Young Turpin was born on a farm near Shenandoah, September 3, 1877, and departed this life at Des Moines, on Saturday, March 5, 1949, at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 2 days.
The early years of his life were spent on the home place near Shenandoah. There he was educated in the rural schools of Page county, and there he grew to young manhood. In 1902, he was united in marriage with Miss Millie Osbourne, daughter of Rev and Mrs Eli Osbourne. To this union, two daughters were born, Mrs Cecil Gustin of Des Moines, and Mrs Paul Borsky of Omaha, Nebr.
After spending a few years in Shenandoah, they moved to Manila, in Crawford county, Iowa. There Mr Turpin was well known as a carpenter and general contractor. In later years, he purchased a garage business.
After he suffered a sudden paralytic stroke, about six and a half years ago, he and his wife moved to New Market. Later they moved to Clarinda, but as his condition grew progressively worse, he was taken to a nursing home in Des Moines. At the time of his passing, he was in the home of his daughter, Mrs Cecil Gustin of Des Moines.
During earlier years, Mr Turpin was converted and joined the fellowship of the First Baptist church at Shenandoah. During the years of extreme illness, he found much help and strength through the radio ministry of Dr Charles E. Fuller of the Old Fashioned Revival Hour and others.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs Millie Turpin of Des Moines, one brother, William Turpin of Wichita, Kans, one sister, Mrs Earla Stevenson of Waverly, Kans, two daughters, Mrs Cecil Gustin of Des Moines and Mrs Paul Borsky of Omaha, Nebr, and two grandsons, Wayne Cecil Gustin and Allen Ellsworth Gustin, both of Des Moines.

Tuttle, Merton - Merton Tuttle, 87, prominent retired lumberman of New Market, died at the Municipal hospital Sunday at 3 am. Funeral service will be held at the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm Tuesday with burial in Old Memory cemetery at New Market. Rev Frank A. Mathews of the New Market Methodist church will officiate.
Mr Tuttle was born in New York state and as a young man taught school before he entered the lumber business. He had lived in New Market since 1916 and for many years ran a lumber yard at Lenox as well as the large one in New Market. He retired from the lumber business eight years ago. He was a member of the Methodist church, the Masons and Odd Fellows.
He was married in 1900 to Belle Gilmore. Last December the couple had open house on their 54th wedding anniversary.
Last Thursday after Mr Tuttle had been brought to the Municipal hospital, Mrs Tuttle fell at her home and broke her hip and is now a patient in the hospital.
No one is in the home in New Market. All enquiries are to be made to the Walker Funral Home.

Updike, Richard "Red", 49, former Clarindan now living at Corning, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home Sunday morning.
A native of Clarinda, he had lived here until about 20 years ago when he moved to Corning. He had worked with the Burlington Truck Lines here and was a Ford implement dealer at Corning.
He is survived by his wife Marian, a daughter, Mrs Ronald (Sherry) Young of Des Moines; brothers, Joe of Clarinda, Kenneth of Avoca, Jack of Woodward, and Harold of Flint, Mich, and a sister, Mrs Jack Bell of Perry.

Wainwright, Arthur J. - Funeral services for Arthur J. Wainwright, 85, of Clarinda, will be at 1- am Friday, January 7, 1994, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
Wainwright died Tuesday noon, January 4, 1994, at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
He was born Dec 12, 1908, near Gravity, the son of Edgar L. and Sarah Blanche Pfander Wainwright. He was a farmer and married Beulah Wamsley on Dec 12, 1929. Besides his wife of the home he is survived by two daughters, Mrs Bill (Erma Lee) Zenor of Red Oak, and Janice Munn of Omaha, Ne. There are six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Virginia Rope of Clarinda is a sister.
He was preceded in death by parents, and brother, Edgar L. Wainwright Jr.

Walker, Elsie Blanche Moger . - Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Shambaugh Church of God for Elsie Blanche Walker, 67, of Shambaugh who died Friday morning at the Bethesda Care Center [Clarinda, Iowa].
She was born June 30, 1909 at Hazelton, ND to Judson A. and Elva Cabbage Moger. In 1919 she came to Page County and married Lester Walker on Nov 28, 1935. She taught rural school for many years in the county and lived on a farm near Braddyville with her husband until moving to Shambaugh in 1964.
She is survived by her husband Lester, her mother, Elva Moger of Shambaugh; her brother Leon of Boone.
Funeral services were held at the Shambaugh Church of God, of which Mrs Walker was a member. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery, with Walker Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Rev Ray Draper officiated with Elma Geer organist, Margaret Draper soloist and Sheryl William accompanist.

Walker, Lester - Funeral services for Lester Walker, 78 of Shambaugh will be at 10:30 am, Friday at the Shambaugh Church o God with Rev Virgil Blosser and Rev Lewis Hunter officiating.
Mr Walker died Tuesday morning at Municipal Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born Sept 24, 1900 at College Springs, the son of Charles A. and Lulu Baird Walker.
In 1935 he was married to Elsie Moger who preceded him in death June of 1977. He was married to Esther Keesey in November 1978.
Mr Walker had farmed in the College Springs and Braddyville areas until his retirement.
He graduated from the Amity High School at College Springs and was a member of the Church of God at Shambaugh and a longtime church council member.
Survivors include his wife Esther of the home and brothers, Harold of Tucson, Az, and Roger of Horseshoe Bend, Ar. Sisters are Vesta Reed of Braddyville and Madeline Johnston, of Jacksonville, Fl. Step children are Wayne Keesey of Vancouver, Wa, Vivian Davies of New Market and Eva Ann Keesey of Orange, Ca. There are eight step grandchildren.
Norma Clement will be soloist and Elma Geer organist. Estella Howard will be at the register. Casket bearers will be Leo Miller, Ernest Winger, Charley Geer, Kris Davies, Dennis Johnston and Willie Babb. Honorary bearers will be Ernest Meyer, Horace Stone, Lemoyne Beery, Glen Perry, Jay Jamison and Art Bair. Ushers will be Carmen Clement, Walter Geer, and Melvin Cabbage.

Wamsley, Estella Dougherty - Mrs Estella Wamsley, 84, died at her home in Mission, Kans, at 2 pm Thursday [Mar 5] of complications of major surgery which was performed in December of 1963.
She was the widow of the late Earl Wamsley, and had lived in Clarinda until 1931, then moved to Des Moines. She made her home there until 1940, and moved to the Kansas City area near her daughter. She was a native Iowan, being born in Page County. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mission, Kans.
She is survived by a daughter, Leta Wamsley, Mission, Kans, two sisters, Mrs Grover Mohler, Bedford, and Mrs John Carmichael, Roundup, Mont, and a brother, Horace Dougherty, North English.
Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home Sunday with the Rev C.A. Blackburn of Mission, Kans, in charge. Wamsley, Hyrtle Fern "John" - Braddyville- John Wamsley, 81, former employee at the Mental Health Institute until retirement to Braddyville, died Thursday at 9:25 pm at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital where he had been in critical condition for nine days.
Memorial services were held Saturday at the Walker Funeral Home with the Rev Clem Keyes officiating. Burial was in Clarinda Cemetery with casket bearers Keith Fuller, Wayne Moore, Lester Wise, Bob McClure, Arlo Sunderman and Max Davison. Musicians were Marla Myers and Kent Harold.
Mr Wamsley was born near Clarinda on April 29, 1886 to William H. and Joanna Giles Wamsley. He and his wife were remembered for their many years employed locally, he being superintendent of the men's wards and she of the women's at the Mental Health Institute. Since his retirement, Mr Wamsley has been a livestock dealer in the Braddyville vicinity. His health has not been good for several years.

Warrick, Grace Elizabeth Weaver - Grace Elizabeth Warrick, daughter of Phillip and Julia Weaver, was born Sept 11, 1901, in Page county near Clarinda and died June 5, 1951, at the home of her daughter Mrs Merrill Adams in New Market, Iowa, at the age of 49 years 8 mo and 24 days.
Most of her life was spent in Page and Taylor counties, except one year at Red Cloud, Neb.
She was united in marriage to Herbert Warrick of Clarinda, Feb 10, 1921. To this union, eight children were born.
She is survived by her husband Herbert; Mrs Arthur Blake, Bedford; Mrs Merrill Adams, New Market; Windell of Clarinda; Orville of Shenandoah; Harold of Gravity; Junior of Creston; and Ronald and Catherine at home; and eight grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and children she leaves two sisters and two brothers, Mrs James Lewis of Puyallup, Wash; Mrs Blaine Hunter of Stanberry, Mo; Melvin Weaver of Oregon City, Oreg; and Acel Weaver of New Market.
Those preceding her in death were her parents; Mrs Walter Stuart of New Market and Clyde Weaver of Molalla, Ore.
Funeral service was conducted Thursday, June 8, from the Walker Funeral Home by Rev D.C. Davis. Special music was in charge, accompanied by Miss Aletha Hutchings. Watson, George Alexander - George Alexander Watson was born January 22, 1858, at Berwick, Ill, and passed away at his home in New Market October 4th, 1936, at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 18 days.
At the age of 23 he came to Iowa. He was united in marriage to Emma Weaver September 25, 1887. To this union eight children were born, four having preceded him in death. The living children are, Clyde Watson and Mrs John Carey of New Market, Mrs Arnot Brown of Artesian, South Dakota, and Mrs Merville James of Fedora, South Dakota. There are seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, also one sister, Mary Watson of Berwick, Ill.
He lived in South Dakota 26 years, and moved from there to New Market three years ago. He was a charter member of the I.O.O.F. lodge of New Market.
He has been in failing health for five years. During his last illness he was a patient sufferer. He was a kind and loving father, always thoughtful of others. All member of his family were at his bedside when he passed away.

Weaver, Essie L. Sanburn - Mrs Essie L. Weaver, 93, of Clarinda, died Dec 7, 1985 in the morning at Municipal Hospital.
She had been a resident of Clarinda nursing homes for the past several years.
She was born January 12, 1892, in Kansas, the daughter of William and Mina Beery Sanburn.
She was married to Art Graham and later to Acel Weaver, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by Three children, Earl Graham, Aurora, Co; Ruth Graham, Villisca, Ia; and Mrs Lowell (Mary) Rucker, Lincoln, Ne. There are three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs Martha Morrow of New Market is a sister. There are also several nieces and nephews.

Weaver, Frank - Frank Weaver was born in Page county, Iowa, June 5, 1860, and died at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 4 days.
He lived in Page and Taylor counties all of his life. He was an honest and industrious man. He believed in an Infinent God, but had not affiliated with any church.
He leaves to mourn his departure one brother, T.W. Weaver, his other relatives having preceded him in death. He leaves besides his relatives a host of friends.

Weaver, Julia Anne Welch - Julia Anne Welch, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Lampton Welch, was born April 1, 1863, in Washington, Iowa, and passed away May 12, 1937, at the age of 74 years, 1 month and 11 days. She came to Page county, Ia., at the age of nine years, and has spent most of her life here with exception of a few years in Nebraska and Missouri.
On April 26, 1881, she was united in marriage to Philip Weaver who preceded her in death May 7, 1926. To this union was born seven children, one daughter, Minnie Stuart, passed away in 1906. Six children who are now living are Addie Lewis of Red Cloud, Nebr., Alma Hunter of King City, Mo., Grace Warrick of Gravity, Ia., and three sons, Melvin Weaver of St Joseph, Mo., Acil Weaver at home near Nodaway, Ia, and Clyde Weaver of Hepburn. In her early years, she was entered in the Baptist church. She leaves to mourn her passing, one brother, Benjamin Welch and three sisters, Mary Weaver and Nora Martindale of Clarinda, and Mina Hafer of Jerome, Idaho, nineteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren besides a host of friends.

Weaver, Mary V. Welch - Mrs John Weaver, 76, died of burns received late Tuesday afternoon when a shed used for housing fuel burned to the ground. Mrs Weaver, a long time Clarinda resident was thought to either have gone to try and put out the blaze or else was in the shed when the fire occurred the blaze catching her before she could reach the door. The woman was found in the doorway when help arrived and she was carried into the house but died a few minutes later. Mrs Weaver lived on 6th and Lincoln in Clarinda.
The fuel shed was divided into two parts, two families sharing the building. The fire supposedly started in the side not occupied by Mrs Weaver. The fire department was unable to save the shed. A kerosenne tank was found in the building and both ends had been blown out. This tank was thought to have exploded as the first fire truck arrived as an explosion occurred at that time.
Mrs Weaver is survived by two sisters Mrs Jim Martindale living near Clarinda and Mrs Ralph Hafer of Twin Falls, Idaho, and one brother, Ben Welch, of Braddyville. Her husband, John Weaver, died in 1937.

Webb, Delia Ann Cade - Dallas Twp. (Special) -- Mrs Delia Webb, aged 77, died at the home of her son, John Webb, at 3:45 o'clock Tuesday morning, after a long illness. She was a pioneer resident of Dallas township since in the 1850's. All her living children were at her bedside at the time of her death, namely, John L. Webb, Mrs Elwood Reynolds and Archie Webb. She is also survived by a brother, Elihu Cade, and a sister, Mrs Amos Hipsley, both of New Market, and twelve grandchildren. Her husband, Robert Webb, and a daughter, Mrs Acel Weaver, passed away several years ago.

Webb, Grace Belva Shore - Grace Belva (Shore) Webb, daughter of the late Miles and Annie Reeves Shore was born near Beloit, Kansas September 26, 1887 and with her parents moved to Taylor County, Iowa when three years of age. The farm home was 1/2 miles east of New Market.
Here she grew to womanhood and attended the New Market school. She graduated from high school in 1903. She attended Western Normal College for two years and graduated from the Iowa State Course. She then began her teaching career which lasted many years. Her last year of school was taught after she was seventy years old. She taught in Sharpsburg, Bedford and New Market, later taught in rural schools. She also attended NMTC.
She was a lover of music and spent many hours at the piano deriving great pleasure.
It was while she was teaching that she met George Webb who was a young farmer and carpenter of this vicinity. Friendship ripened into love, and the couple was united in marriage on April 6, 1910 at the home of her parents at the farm home.
They established their home near New Market and continued their residence on the farm until 1947 when they retired and moved to town. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in April 1960 at their home.
The home was greatly interrupted by the death of her husband and companion George Webb for 53 years on August 5th, 1963. She continued in the home, although lonesome and heart broken.
In childhood, Mrs Webb was converted and united with the New Market Methodist Church of which she ever remained a loyal interested, earnest member. During her years she served as Superintendent of the Sunday School and on the Official Board as a Steward. Her years of service have prepared her for the Heavenly rest and reward. May her influence linger as a fragrance in all our lives.
To this union two children were born, a daughter Genevieve Anna, who now lives in St Petersburg, Florida and is the wife of Roy Miller and a son, George Merrill who lives together with his wife Darlene and daughter Leesa Ann at Shenandoah, Iowa.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her children, their companions and Leesa Ann, sister Jessie Harris and brother Miles Victor Shore, many nieces and nephews and a large number of relatives and friends.

Webb, Lizzie Pullen - Lizzie Pullen Webb, daughter of Joseph and Minerva White Pullen, was born in Page county, August 21, 1881, and passed away at her home three miles east of Hepburn, Iowa, Monday evening, January 31, 1938, at the age of 56 years, 5 months and 10 days, after an illness of only a few days. She lived in and around Clarinda all her life, excepting 2 1/2 years in Colorado.
The year 1897 she was married to William Parker. To this union six children were born, four children preceded her in death, Ray, Stella, Ella and Homer. She is survived by a son Earl and daughter Mrs Tilda Smith of Clarinda, also 4 living grandchildren. Mr Parker passed away Sept 23, 1915. She continued her home in Shambaugh.
On November 18, 1916, she was married to Alphus Hunt and the family moved to Clarinda. Mr Hunt passed away January 24, 1931.
On October 9, 1933, she was married to Elmer Webb of Clarinda and they went to Loveland, Colo, living there until March, 1936, when her health forced them to come back here to a lower climate and during the past year and half living east of Hepburn where she passed away.
Her husband, who has been so faithful and loving in his care for her, is left to mourn his loss.
She was the oldest of a family of nine children. Two brothers, John and Artie, and her father and mother preceded her in death.
One sister, Mrs Alice Parker, of Shambaugh, and five brothers, Oscar of Braddyville, Edd of Guss, Lon of Indianola, Roy of Shambaugh, and Raymond of Clearmont, Mo, survive. She also has many nieces and nephews and a host of friends who mourn her departure.
She attended the North Grove church near her home whenever her health permitted.
Rev Ernest B. Stewart, Methodist pastor at the North Grove church, conducted the funeral service Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Walker Funeral Home here. Welch, Minnie L. - Minnie L. Welch, 59, lifetime Page County resident, died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital at 8:20 pm Tuesday, after being hospitalized for one day.
She was the daughter of the late Ben and Mary Meads Welch, and was born on a farm near Clarinda. She had worked at the Mental Health Institute, and for several years worked as receptionist at Dr Ford's office at Elmo.
She is survived by a son Rebert Welch of Bellevue, Neb; five brothers, Lewis Welch of Des Moines, Jim Welch of California, Vernon Welch of Tacoma, Wash, Darrell Welch of Clarinda, and Ralph Welch, now serving with the US Navy; and four sisters, Mrs Lawrence (Elizabeth) Bramble of Essex, Mrs Roy (Lucille) Johnston of Graham, Wash, Mrs John (Dorothy) French of Ronan, Mont, and Mrs Larry (Maxine) LaFave of Munising, Mich. She has four grandchildren.

Wells, Bessie Penwell - Mason Township.--Services were held this Monday afternoon for Mrs Elvin (Jud) Wells, 63, who died suddenly at her home Saturday morning.
The former Bessie Penwell, she was married Feb 10, 1926. They had lived in Mason Township for 25 years. She was a member of the Siam Methodist Church. Her husband is a popular auctioneer in the Southwest Iowa agricultural area.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs R.R. (Daisy) Watson of Elizabeth City, NC, Mrs Howard (Mabel) Hawhee of New Market, Mrs Opal Cerven of Clarinda and a brother Harold Penwell of Farragut.

Wells, Emmett Ray - Mason Twp.--Emmert Ray Wells, 78, native of Mason township, died Tuesday morning at the Pearl Terrace Manor in Bedford. While he had lived most of his married life in South Dakota, he had come to Bedford two years ago.
Funeral services were to be this Thursday at the Shum Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial was to be in Memory cemetery southwest of New Market. Carl Cummings, lay minister from Bedford, was to be in charge of the memorial service, with Mrs Howard Clark and Mrs Hal Dean Turner furnishing the music. Casket bearers were Harve Thompson, Beryl Kelso, Ray Fine, Ed Savage, Dwight Lovitt and Ralph Clayton.
His wife, Elizabeth, survives him. He was eldest of three brothers, Ivan living in Bedford and Elvin near New Market. He has three sisters, Mrs May Holland of New Market, Mrs Basil (Anna) Scott of Bedford and Miss Gladys Wells of Omaha.

Wells, Gladys Eula - Services for Gladys E. Wells, 78, were held October 11 at Shum-November Funeral Home with Rev Carl Cummings and Rev Ted DeHass officiating. Burial was at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market. Miss Wells died October 7, 1988 at Mercy Hospital in Corning.
Gladys Eula Wells, daughter of Jacob S. Wells and Jennie Cavender Wells, was born near Siam in Mason Township, Taylor County, Iowa February 19, 1910. She grew to maturity in the community where she was born where she attended the North Star rural school was graduated from New Market High School. She with her family attended the Baptist Church.
Her first employment was with the Earl May Seed and Nursery Company of Shenandoah, Ia. Later she moved to Des Moines, Ia and was employed by the Des Moines Care Center and the Mercy Hospital. After moving to Omaha, Neb she was employed by the Bishop Bergan-Mercy Hospital and in all of this employment she was the nutritionist and head kitchen supervisor.
Failing health caused her retirement and she returned to Des Moines to live prior to coming to Bedford where she has continued to reside.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ray Wells and Ivan Wells and a sister, May Holland.
Left to cherish her memory are a sister, Anna Scott and her husband Lowell Scott, a nephew; a brother Elvin Wells and his wife Berniece and Jean Wells Park, a nice; other relatives and friends. She was a member of the Bedford Baptist Church.

Wells, Jacob Elvin "Judd" - Jacob Elvin "Judd" 87, died September 11 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston.
He was born on September 18, 1904 the son of Jacob S. Wells and Jennie Cavender Wells on a farm south of New Market. He attended Lone Star Schoola nd the Siam Methodist Church.
On February 10, 1926 he was united in marriage to Betty Penwell. They lived on the farm for five years and then moved to Villisca where he was employed on highway construction and in 1933 they moved back to the farm where they spent the rest of their life.
Mrs Wells passed away on November 11, 1967.
He was also an auctioner for 60 years being associated with his brother Ivan for many years.
He moved to Bedford after retiring in 1971 and was united in marriage to Berniece Bennett on March 29, 1975.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ray and Ivan and sisters, Mae Holland, Anna Scott and Gladys Wells and two brothers who died in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, Berniece two step sons, Marvin Peyton of Fayetteville, Ark; and Loren Peyton of Sacramento, Ca; a nephew Lowell Scott of Bedford; and a niece, Jean Wells, Park of Tustin, Ca; among other relatives and friends.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and was granted the distinguished service award in 1990 by the Bedford church; a member of Bedford Lodge #91 I.O.O.F. and served as Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Iowa in 1980 I.O.O.F. and a member of the Encampment and Canonat, Clarinda. He was also a member of Rebekah Lodge #134 in Bedford, and also held offices of many of these lodges throughout the years.
Mr Wells served as Township Trustee of Mason Township for 34 years and also served as President of the New Market Telephone Exchange.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 15, at 10 am at the Novinger-Taylor Funeral Home in Bedford with interment in the Memory Cemetery in New Market. Wells, Jennie Cavender - Jennie Cavender, daughter of Zopher and Anne Cavender, was born at Neelyville, Ill, on Sept 17, 1866.
She passed away December 22, 1947 at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 5 days.
At the age of 2 years she came to Iowa with her parents and settled on a farm in Taylor county where she attended school and grew to womanhood.
She was united in marriage with J.S. Wells on Jan 11, 1888, and at the time she was stricken with her last illness they were making plans to celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary next month.
To this union were born five sons and three daughters--two of the sons having preceeded her in death.
Surviving are the husband, three daughters, Mrs Frank Holland (Mae), Mrs Basil Scott (Anna), and Gladys. Three sons, Ray, Ivan, and Elvin. There are four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs Frank Arthur, Fulton, Mo and two brothers, P.E. Cavender, Rockport, Mo, and R.W. Cavender, Plattsmouth, Ne, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs Wells has been a devoted member of the Baptist church since early in life.
Her entire married life was spent in the same farm to which she came as a bride almost sixty years ago except a few years spent in New Market.

Werts, Worthy - Worthy Werts, 76, whose home was 3 1/2 miles northwest of New Market, died Sunday at 1:30 pm at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital, where he had been taken just a week before, suffering from effects of lung cancer and a bloodclot in his leg.
Funeral plans have been made for Tuesday at 2 pm at the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda. The Rev Lacy Thompson of the New Market Methodist Church will be the minister. Burial will be in Old Memory Cemetery.
Mr Werts had always lived in the New Market vicinity, and farmed the home place of his father, O.B. Werts. His wife, Nettie, and daughter, Mrs Crystal Pratt of New Market, are survivors. The Werts have two granddaughters, Donna Jones of Clarinda and Wiema Hummell of Mt Pleasant, Ia.
Mr Werts was member of New Market's Covenant Lodge, No 453 AF&AM. He was president of the New Market telephone company for many years, active in school work of his vicinity and in other community affairs. Wilmes, Jason Alan - Funeral services for Jason Alan Wilmes, 10-year-old son of Mike and Norma Wilmes of rural New Market, will be at 1:30 pm Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, with the Revs Sara Malone and Jon Palmquist officiating. Jason died on Tuesday afternoon, Aug 18, 1987.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 7-8 pm this Thursday.
He was born Aug 9, 1977 at Clarinda, the son of Michael and Norma O'Connor Wilmes.
He had finished the third grade at New Market School.
He is survived by his parents, a brother, Michael Jay, and sister, Nikki, all of the home near New Market. Grandparents are Maurice O'Connor at Bethesda Care Center and Ruby O'Connor of New Market.

Wilmes, Lela Hardisty - Mrs John (Lela) Wilmes, 54, of New Market, died at her home Thursday afternoon.
She was born Dec 30, 1915 near Maryville, Mo, the daughter of Alva and Sadie Pierson Hardisty. On Dec 25, 1941 she was married to John Wilmes who survives.
The Wilmes family has lived in the New Market area for several years before moving into town. Mrs Wilmes has been working as an aide at Mental Health.
She is survived by her husband of the home and seven children: Larry of St Joseph, Mrs Lyle (Judy) Alexander of Red Oak, Mrs Dale (Sharon) Hoyt of New Market, Mrs Tony (Connie) Silva of New Market, Michael stationed in Vietnam, Deborah Rose and Gregory Allen of the home and nine grandchildren.
One brother, Alva Hardisty of Long Beach, Cal, and three sisters, Mrs Truman Shelton of Quitman, Mo, Mrs Ernest Wilmes of Conception Jct, Mo, and Mrs Marvin Cowan of Council Bluffs, also survive.

Wineingar, Earl - Funeral services are to be held Friday at 10 am in the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford for Earl Wineingar, 72, who died Wednesday at the Corning Country Manor Care Center.
The son of Bertha and Charley Wineingar, Earl was born and raised on a farm south of New Market in Mason Township. He was a graduate of New Market High School and a veteran of World War II. After the death of his parents, 10 years ago he moved to the Taylor County Care Facility and then to the Corning Country Manor Care Center. Dick and Rosie Burton have been taking responsibility for his care.

Wineinger, Charles - Funeral services for Charles Wineinger, 83, lifetime Taylor county resident, held April 20 at Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford, were conducted by Mr Carl Cummings. Mr Wineinger died April 17, 1969, at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was at Memory Cemetery in New Market.
Charles Wineinger, son of John C. Wineinger and Jennie Johnson Wineinger, was born on a farm in Mason Township on October 2, 1885. When he was a small boy of Nine months of age, he was taken by his mother to live with his Uncle Adam Johnson who cared fro him as he would his own son. He continued to live on this farm for the rest of his life, living the quiet, simple country life that he enjoyed so much.
He was well know for his honesty and uprightness, and everyone knew that when Charles gave his word to do a thing it was always carried out to the best of his ability.
On January 12, 1911, he was united in marriage to Bertha Fuller at Bedford. To this union were born two children, a son, Earl, and a daughter who died in infancy.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, a brother, Clyde, a sister, Maude and an infant daughter.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha, son, Earl; also several cousins and many friends.
He was a kind and loving husband, father, friend and neighbor and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Wise, Hubert Harrison - Hubert Harrison Wise, son of Owen and Catherine Barnard Wise, was born in Cedar County, Iowa July 6, 1876, and passed to his eternal reward in a hospital in California Sept 17, 1960, at the age of 84 years, two months and 11 days.
He was united in marriage to Ethel Elzira Wineinger Oct 16, 1903, at Bedford, Ia, which resulted in a happy companionship lasting almost 57 years. There was born to this union one son, Wyman Wineinger Wise, who with his wife Helen have cared for his parents in their Glendale, calif, home since in December, 1959.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters. He was the last of the Owen Wise family.
Those surviving him besides his son Wyman and daughter-in-law Helen are many nieces and nephews and host of friends and brethren in Christ.
Hubert farmed during his early life. After selling out he took a course in watch making at the Elgin Company at Elgin, Ill, after which he conducted a jewelry store in New Market, Ia, then one in Diagonal, Ia. On selling the store he again engaged in farming at Grinnell, Ia. From Grinnell he moved to Enon, Mo, where he again engaged in farming. In 1935 he was injured in an automobile accident which made it impossible for him to continue farming. On selling the farm he moved to Braddyville, Ia, where he engaged in business. On retiring he moved back to his hometown of New Market where they resided until Dec 6, 1959, at which time they moved to California to be near their son.
Hubert united with the Church of Christ at New Market in early manhood and lived a devoted Christian life until his passing. He was a devoted husband and father, and was a man of high ideals. Through his example as a Christian he will continue to live in the llives of those who knew him best.
Funeral services were conducted from the New Market Church of Christ at 2 pm Friday, Sept 23, 1960, with Clarence Potter in charge, assisted by I.E. Stickelman. A quartet composed of Mrs Robert Malcom, Inez Jo Depew, Harry StoUt and I.E. Stickleman sanG "Land Where We Never Grow Old," and "Shall We Gather at the River." Pianist was Mrs Phil Hardee.
Casket bearers who carried him to his final resting place in Old Memory Cemetery were Leslie Falk, Charles Depew, Jesse Brown, Alvin Karg, Robert Malcom and Dell Damewood. Walker Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Clarence Otis Wood was born August 21, 1916, near Bedford, Iowa, to Clarence Wood, and Nora (Burnham) Wood and died Friday, January 10, 2003 at Clearview Care Center, Mount Ayr, Iowa where he had resided since March 2000. He attended Frog Valley rural elementary school and graduated from New Market High School in 1933. Otis attended one year of college. He was united in marriage September 22, 1940, to Marguerite Eileen Snowdall who preceded him in death April 10, 1999. Otis had worked in the coal mines and blue grass business and at age 65 began crop adjusting until age 82. He was also a life long farmer. Otis was a 50+ year member of the Masonic Lodge. He served on the New Market School Board for 18 years. Otis was also a member of the New Market Civic Club and the United Methodist Church in New Market. His interests were family, farming, hunting, fishing and playing cards. Otis enjoyed all sports on TV, except for the Nebraska Cornhusker Football team. He was a strong supporter of education through his years of service on the local board, county school board, Southwest Community College Board of Education and involvement with state legislators on quality education.
Preceding Otis in death were his parents, wife; Marguerite, son; Chris, brother; Orville and sister; Opal. Wood, Chris - Chris Wood of rural New Market, died the evening of October 15, 1998 at his home. He was born February 23, 1954 to C. Otis and Marguerite Snowdall Wood in Clarinda, Iowa. Chris was a graduate of New Market High School and was a veteran of the United States Army of the Vietnam Era.

Wood, Clarence O. - There comes a time when life's journey comes to an end, and so it was with Clarence Orville Wood, the only son of William A. and Susie Robins Wood. He was born March 23, 1888 near Gaynor in Nodaway County, Mo. He passed away July 23, 1976 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Ia. He lived in Missouri till a young man, then he moved with his parents to Kansas for two years. From there they moved to Taylor County, Iowa where he lived the remainder of his life.
He was married Oct 20, 1909 to Nora E. Burnham, to this union three children were born: Orville Wood, New Market, Mrs Merritt (Opal) Foster and Otis Wood of New Market, Ia. He lost his wife May 5, 1962 after 52 years of wedded life. On January 10, 1970 he was united in marriage to Mary Stanton Else, who was his constant and devoted companion. During the last three years she was constantly at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter-in-law Mildred and a granddaughter, Carolyn Parsons in April of this year.
His survivors are his wife Mary, two sons and a daughter of New Market, also three step children, Dean Else of Omaha, Mrs B.J. (Dorothy) Moon, Lincoln, Neb, and Mrs John (Betty) Darnold of Villisca, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, six step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren, cousins, and a host of friends.
Farming was his life occupation, he loved livestock and being out of doors - doing these things until he suffered a broken hip three years ago. He was taken care of in his home which he loved by his faithful wife and three children until he required skilled care. He will be sadly missed by his family, neighbors and friends.
Services were held at Walker Funeral Home Sunday, July 25th at 2 o'clock. Clergyman was Loren Daly. Music was by Mary Anderson.
Honorary bearers were Carroll Ingram, Guy Noble, Dale Crawford, Rollyn Sunderman, Floyd Maley, and Ralph Pendergraft. Casket bearers were Wayne Wood, Clark Batten, Dan Wood, Chris Wood, Tom Crawford, Richard Schmitz and James Moon. Final resting place was Memory Cemetery near New Market, Ia.

Wood, Edith Brownlee - Funeral services were held during the weekend for two of the residents of this community whose homes had been here many years. The last rites were held Sunday for Mrs Edith C. Wood, and the .... for Mrs Elmer E. Thomason were held Friday.
Mrs Edith C. Wood, 67, who had been a resident of Villisca for the past twenty-nine years, died at her home on East Fourth street Thursday of last week at 7:30 am after a long period of invalidism.
Edith Catherine Brownlee, daughter of A.L. and Lenora J. Bronwlee was born Sept 3, 1868 at Vinton, Benton county, Iowa, where she lived until she was 14 years of age when she moved with her parents to Page county, Ia.
As a girl she joined the United Presbyterian church, and later transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church in Villisca.
She was married Sept 26, 1893, to James W. Wood and they resided on the farm in Page county until his death, Oct 30, 1896.
To them was born one daughter Nora Wood who is employed in the Dr J. Clark Cooper office.
In 1906 Mrs Wood moved with her mother to Loveland, Colo., where she remained about a year and returned to Villisca where she has resided until her death a week ago.
Besides her daughter she is survived by two brothers, J.W. Brownlee of Denver, Colo., and J.F. Brownlee of Yuma, Colo.
The funeral service was held at Mrs Woods home at 2 pm with the Rev Carl Per--- of the United Presbyterian church of Clarinda in charge. Interment was in the North Page cemetery.

Wood, Marguerite Eileen Snowdall - Marguerite Eileen Wood, 80, of New Market, Iowa died Saturday morning April 10, 1999 at St Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri.
Margueirte was born near Randolph, Iowa May 20, 1918 to Joseph Alva and Ethel Maude Gordon Snowdall. She was a 1935 Coin High School graduate. On September 22, 1840 she was united in marriage to Otis Wood, who survives. Marguerite worked at Woolworth Store in Clarinda, Iowa and did upholstery for many years.
Survivors include her husband Otis of the home; daughters, Miriam Schmitz of Dearborn, Mo; Marilyn Batten and husband Clark of Clarinda, Iowa; Jane Crawford and husband Tom of Grimes, Iowa; sons, Steven Wood and wife Marcia of Rensselaer, In; Daniel Wood and wife Brenda of New Market, Iowa; sisters, Helen Hixon of Clarinda, Iowa and Wave Aker of Shenandoah, Iowa.
Preceding her in death were her parents, and son, Chris Wood.

Wood, Mildred Harkless - New Market (Special) Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Walkers Funeral Home for Mrs Orville (Mildred) Wood, 50, who died at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda Monday after a lingering illness.
Born at London Mills, Ill, Mildred moved to this area when still a small girl, coming with her father and grandparents who raised her.
Mr and Mrs Woods have spent their married life in the New Market area. They farmed a few years but have lived most of the time in town.
Mrs Woods is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs Richard (Carolyn) Parsons of New Market; one son, Wayne of Omaha; her father, Jay Harkless of Clarinda; and an aunt, Mrs Curtis Melvin of New Market.
The Rev Clarence Moore of Clarinda was clergyman and burial was in Old Memory cemetery. Pall bearers were Lavoy Eighmy, Ben Anderson, Wilbur Novinger, Tom Brummet, Donald Parsons and Irvin Miller.
Mrs Woods was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, Rural Busy Bees Club, WSCS of the Methodist Church and the New Market Alumnae Association.

Woods, Edna - Mrs Edna Woods, 65, wife of the late Joe Woods, died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital at 7 am Friday after a lingering illness.
Since the death of her husband in August of 1958, she had lived alone in her home at 415 S 13th St, until her illness forced her to move to a nursing home. On August 13 she was taken to the State University of Iowa Hospital at Iowa City, Ia, for treatment and then was returned home.
She formerly made her home at Shambaugh, moving to Clarinda six years ago. No immediate relatives survive her.

Woods, Joe - Joe Woods, long a popular farmer near Shambaugh, passed away Friday after a lingering illness, at the new home in Clarinda. The past two years he and his wife have had their own new residence at 415 S 15th street. He was 86 years old.
Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at 2:00 pm, at the Walker Funeral Home, with Mrs T. Fessler in charge, and burial was in the Davis Cemetery south of Clarinda, near his former home.

Wright, John - John Wright, 72, of the rural area west of Gravity died at 5:30 pm Wednesday at the Clarinda Municipal hospital.

Young, Allie May Carmichael - NEW MARKET (Special) Mrs Allie Young 79, died at the West Portal Rest Home Easter Sunday. She had fallen in 1957, and after care in the University hospital at Iowa City from hip fracture, she went to the nursing home here. She was also blind.
Her husband had died in 1957. They had lived their entire lives in New Market. Mrs Young was active with the Rebekah Lodge.
Her daughter is Mary Lester (Opal) Shelton of Tucson, Ariz, and two sons, Lewis Young of Council Bluffs and Harvey Young of New Market. She had five grandchildren and a great grandchild.
The funeral is to be Tuesday at 2 pm at the Walker Funeral Home with the Rev L.M. Pence of the Baptist Church officiating. Music will be by Merrill Miller and Miss Aletha Hutchings. Burial is to be in Old Memory Cemetery. CLARINDA HERALD JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, Apr 15, 1963

Young, Anita Sue - Graveside services for the infant of Mr and Mrs John Edward Young of New Market were held this Monday morning at Memory Cemetery, the Rev Carroll Newquist in charge and Walker Funeral Home making arrangements.

Young, George Franklin - George Franklin Young, son of W.H. and Barbara Ann Young, was born at Cecor, Ill, on Feb 10, 1970, and passed away Sept 15, 1951, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 5 days. He was married to Leveta McNutt, who preceded him in death 33 years ago. No children were born to this union.
He came to Iowa with his parents when a small boy and has lived in Page and Taylor counties since that time. The earlier part of his life was spent on the farm and after retiring from farming he worked at various other occupations. He was a member of the Baptist church of New Market, and also of the Masonic Lodge of the same place.
He leaves to mourn his passing, three brothers, Brenton O. of Albia, Will H. and Grover of New Market, and one sister Mrs Elizabeth Miller, also of New Market, and a large number of other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dave, John and Jim and two sisters who passed away in infancy.
Mr Young was a man of good character and stood high in the esteem of those who knew him.
Funeral services were conducted at the Church of Christ in New Market, Sept 18, 1951 at 1 pm with the Rev I.E. Stickelman in charge. Mrs Robert Malcolm and Mrs Orville Cabbage furnished the music with Mrs Opal Brown at the piano.
Pallbearers were Ralph Pratt, Orie Cade, Tom Harris, Elmer Eighmy, B. Hutchinson and John Terbell. Interment was in Memory cemetery. The New Market Masonic Lodge gave Masonic service at the grave

Young, Grover - NEW MARKET (Special) -- Grover Young, 73, died Wednesday following a long illness.
Mr and Mrs Young farmed near Hawleyville for several years, moving south of New Market before ill health forced them to quit farming. They moved to New Market two years ago.
Mr Young was born at Canton, Ill, surviving are his wife, Hazel, and several niece's and nephews. He is last of nine children who were reared in this vicinity.

Grover Cleveland Young, was born April 24, 1884, and departed this life March 13, 1957, at this home in New Market at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 17 days.
He was born to William and Barbara Young in Canton, Ill, and when but a small child came to Page County, spending the balance of his life here and in Taylor County, except seven years in Missouri.
Dec 21, 1910, he was united in marriage to Hazel Stonebraker. He was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge and Rebekah Lodge of New Market.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister.
Survivors are his wife, Hazel, several nieces and nephews.

Young, Hazel Stonebraker - Funeral services for Mrs Grover (Hazel) Young, 87, of New Market, Iowa, were held February 8, in Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford officiated by Carl Cummings. Mrs Young died in Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda February 6, 1979. Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa.
Hazel Stonebraker Young, daughter of Samuel P. Stonebraker and Ida May Love Stonebraker, was born near Hawleyville, in Page County, Iowa, November 2, 1891.
She attended the public school in the area where she grew to maturity, being active in the various school and community activities.
On December 21, 1910, she was united in marriage to Grover Young and they had lived on farms in the New Market area until they moved into New Market in the early 1950's where she had continued to reside until about a year ago following a stroke she had resided at Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother and two sisters.
Left to cherish her memory are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge #427 of New Market, Iowa, and attended the Church of Christ.

Young, William Henry - William Henry Young, son of William H. and Barbara Ann Young, was born Jan 26, 1872 in Secor, Ill, and died May 7, 1956 in Clarinda, Ia, at the age of 84 years and 11 days.
He moved from Illinois to Iowa in 1886 and had lived in Taylor and Page Counties most of his life.
He was united in marriage with Allie May Carmichael, May 7, 1902 and to this union were born four children, Lewis, Opal, Harvey, and a daughter who died at birth.
Mr Young was a charter member of the Hawleyville Odd Fellow Lodge and later transferred his membership to New Market.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Frank, Dave, Jim and John, a sister, Elizabeth or Lizzie Miller, and a daughter.
He is survived by his wife, Allie May of Bedford; two brothers, Brent of Albia and Grover of New Market; three children, Lewis Young of Council Bluffs, Harvey Young of New Market and Opal A. Shelton of Trumball, Conn; five grandchildren and a great grandson.
Funeral services were conducted May 10, 1956, at the Walker Funeral Home by the Rev Frank A. Mathews Jr of New Market. Singers were Donna Cade and Rosevelyn Bashor with Aletha Hutchings at the organ. Casket bearers were Clyde Long, Dennis McAlpin, Thade Ansbaugh, Henry Brown, Mark Anderson and Milo Whitehad. Interment was in Old Memory Cemetery. Zimmerman, John - Funeral services for John W. Zimmerman, 85, of New Market will be at 2 pm Tuesday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Sarah Maloneofficiating.
Mr Zimmerman died Friday night at Perry, where he had been a resident at the Rowley Home for the past four years.
He was born Dec 1, 1897 at Red Oak, theson of John F. and Anna Erickson Zimmerman.
He was a veteran of W.W.I.
He was married to Vera Hughes who preceded him in death in 1960. In 1963 he was married to Irene Johnson who died in 1979.
Mr Zimmerman had farmed near New Market and worked at the lumber yard before his retirement.
He is survived by a daughter Denis Bolman of Des Plaines, Ill, and two step sons, Roger Johnson of Papillion, Ne, and Charles Johnson of Northfield, Ill. There are four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
