Carpenter, Louise Wright - Funeral services for Mrs Louise Carpenter, 74 of New Market will be at 1:30 pm, Wednesday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Sarah Malone officiating.

Mrs Carpenter died early Sunday morning at Bethesda Care Center where she had been for the past four years.

She was born May 14, 1908, near Blanchard, the daughter of Elmer and Dora Whitney Wright.

She was married to William B. Harper who died in 1958. Later she was married to Noel Carpenter who died in 1980.

Mrs Carpenter is survived by two sons, Darrell Wayne Harper of Marysville, Wa, and Ronald Harper of Santa Anna, Ca. There are five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Step sons are Max Carpenter of Richfield, Mn, and Freddie Carpenter of Kimberling City, Mo. There are two step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

Clary, Cedric E. - Funeral services for Cedric L. Clary, 65, of Clarinda will be at 10:30 am, Tuesday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.

Mr Clary died June 22, 1986 at the Maryville Health Care Center where he had been since Feb 1.

He was born Dec 12, 1920 at Oto, Ia, the son of Elmo and Cleo Mae Briggs Clary.

Mr Clary operated a shoe repair business in Clarinda until his health failed.

He is survived by two children: Danny Clary of Clarinda and Patricia Gray of Maryville, Mo. Sisters are Velma Walker, Red Oak, Wilma Eckenfels, Atlantic and Murrell Semmler, Eminence, Mo. His mother Mrs Cleo Mae Clary is of Clarinda.

Clary, Cleo Mae Briggs - Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 pm at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda for Cleo Mae Clary, 90, of Clarinda. She died this Thursday, Aug 6, 1987 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital where she had been a patient for the past week.

She was born on Jan 30, 1897 at Red Oak, the daughter of Bert and Martha (Forshea) Briggs.

On Oct 10, 1915, she married Elmo Vern Clary, who preceded her in death in 1951.

Mrs Clary had been employed for 15 years at Clarinda Municipal Hospital before retiring.

Survivors include daughters, Murrel Mae Semmler of Eminence, Mo; Wilma Opal Eckenfels of Atlantic, Ia, and Velma Walker of Red Oak; a daughter-in-law, Delores Clary of Clarinda; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Elmo, she was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Cedric Clary who died in 1986.

Clary, Elmo Vern - Elmo Vern Clary, son of William and Ella Clary, was born in Grant township, Woodbury county, Iowa, October 9, 1894, and died at the Municipal hospital in Clarinda, Iowa, May 21, 1951, at the age of 56 years, seven months, and 12 days.

He was one of four children and was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Gertrude. He spent his boyhood days on a farm near Anthon, Iowa.

On October 6, 1915, he united in marriage with Cleo Mae Briggs. To this union were born four children. He operated a shoe repair and harness shop in Oto, Iowa, until 1930. He then moved with his family to Clarinda where he continued his shoe repair work. He remained active in the business until ill health forced his retirement. He worked then for a while at the Clarinda State Hospital and the last year he spent as a foot specialist.

He was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce during his years in business. He also was an active member of the Methodist church until failing health kept him from attending services regularly.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs Ralph Semmler of Creston, Mrs Theodore Eckenfels of Atlantic, Mrs Miles Walker of Red Oak; and a son Cedric Clary of Clarinda. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and one brother, Dr W.H. Clary of Prescott, and a sister Mrs Marion Benton of Sioux City, besides a host of friends.

Coulter, Veralena Hargis - Funeral services are pending for Mrs Inez Veralena Coulter, 80, who died at her home in New Market this Thursday morning.

Burial will be in Memory cemetery at New Market with Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs Coulter was born Sept 22, 1903 in Kincade, Ks, the daughter of Melvin and Hattie Harriett Hughes Hargis. In 1922, she was married to Robert Coulter who preceded her in death in 1973.

She is survived by a daughter, Doris Maxine Jones, who was caring for her mother the past few years; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jack and Darrell Hargis of New Market and Lyle Hargis of Nebraska; and two sisters, Dorothy Brown of New Market and Ruth Smith of Lenox.

Davis, Walter - Walter S. Davis was born October 7, 1890, at Clearmont, Mo, the son of Mr and Mrs William P. Davis, and departed this life June 21, 1941, at the age of 50 years. He was united in marriage on February 15, 1916, to Miss Eva C. Davison. Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs Claris Adams, of Maryville, and one son, Charles Scott Davis, of the home, one sister, Mrs Ira Newton, of Hopkins, and one granddaughter, Carolyn Sue Adams.

Mr Davis was associated with the Jackson bank in Clearmont for many years and for the past 16 years has been with the Nodaway Valley bank in Maryville. He has been ill for some time and had to give up his work on May 9.

Dollahite, William Johnson, was born in Green county, Indiana, Dec 16, 1852, and died at the home of his grandson, Leonard Rine, in Lincoln, Nebr, Jan 9, 1937, at the age of 84 years and 23 days.

Brother Dollahite came with his parents to Iowa when but a small child. In 1859 they moved to Missouri. On May 8th, 1872, he was united in marriage with Cynthia Ann Burch, after which they moved to Page county, Ia, where he has lived most of his life. To this union were born six children, three boys and three girls. The three sons and one daughter passed away in infancy. His wife preceded him in death October 22, 1924. For the past ten years he has made his home with his grandson, Leonard Rine.

He was converted in 1895 and has always lived a true christian life. He was a true husband and father and a good friend to all. He loved to go to church and was always at his post of duty whenever it was possible to be there.

He had been bedfast for about 3 weeks at the time of his passing. He leaves to mourn his death, two daughters, Mrs Luther Clark of New Market and Mrs Wesley Rine of Clarinda, besides his six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many friends and relatives.

Farlow, Martha Jane Hembree - Martha Jane, daughter of W.D. Hembree and Margery Ann Hankins, was born in Taylor county, Iowa, Dec 4, 1876, and died at her home in Siam, Iowa, April 24, 1946, at the age of 69 years, 4 months and 20 days. She received her education in the North Star school north of Siam. In early life she confessed her faith in her Savior and united with the Baptist church in New Market, Iowa, later transferring her membership to the Church of Christ there.

On Sept 5, 1895, she was united in marriage to Simeon F. Farlow at the Baptist parsonage in Bedford, Iowa. To this union were born two children, Floyd William and Marjorie Marie. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, one sister, one brother and her daughter, Marjorie Marie, who died Feb 11, 1911 at the age of 9 years, and was buried at Ottumwa, Iowa.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, her son, Floyd, and his wife, Happilona, who have done so much to minister to their parents' comfort, three grandchildren, Francis and wife, Mary Louise, of Camp Gordon Johnson, Fla, Donald of Des Moines and Jeanette of the home, one great-granddaughter, Joyce Elaine Farlow, and her mother, Uryth Farlow of Des Moines, two sisters, Mrs Rosa Hutchison of Bedford and Mrs Dollie Lindsay of Washington, and one brother, Frank Hembree, of Compton, Calif. Mother Farlow was of a quiet and unassuming nature, a lover of her home and friends, never so happy as when administering to the comfort of her family.

The funeral was held at the Church of Christ in Siam conducted by the Rev W.A. Purdy of Bedford. Singers were Mrs Lola Stewart and Mrs Del Miller accompanied by Mrs Glen Stewart. Casket bearers were Glen Stewart, Del Miller, Jesse Henderson, Frank Shields, Reid Shields and Ernest Gray. Flower girls were Deloris Clayton and Bonnie Thorn. Interment was in Memory cemetery at New Market.

Farlow, Simeon Francis - Funeral services were held for Simeon F. Farlow June 13 at the Christian church in Siam with Rev Clarence Moore, pastor of the Methodist church in charge.

Simeon Francis, son of Mary Gordon and Francis Carr Farlow, was born near North English, Iowa, on Nov 21, 1870 and died at the home of his son in Siam June 10, 1951, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 19 days.

He moved with his parents to Taylor county in 1891. On September 5, 1895 he was married to Martha Jane Hembree of North Star community, north of Siam. They made their home in Iowa with the exception of three years spent in Kansas, moving to Siam in 1923.

To them were born two children, Floyd Wm and Marjorey, who passed away at the age of 12 years. Mr Farlow united with the Church when a young man, transferring his membership to the Church pf Christ at Siam.

Mrs Farlow died Apr 24, 1946.

Surviving are his son Floyd, and daughter-in-law Happilona of Siam, three grandchildren, Floyd Francis of Siam, Donald Monroe of New Market, and Alice Jeanette of Fort Dodge and four great grandchildren. Gray, Byron, - Byron Gray was born in Mahaska County, Iowa, on Dec 27, 1869, and departed this life at his home in Clarinda, Iowa, on Aug 6, 1947, at the age of 78 years 7 months and 10 days. He was the son of William and Margaret Gray.

He was united in marriage to Pearl Terry at Tingley, Iowa, June 4, 1903. To this union were born six children. Two children preceded Mr Gray in death.

He went to Tingley, Iowa, at an early age with his parents, who homesteaded a farm there. He lived in or near Tingley until his marriage, at which time he moved to Clearfield, Iowa, living there for seven years.

In 1911 he moved to New Market, Iowa, and has lived in Taylor and Page counties since that time.

He was converted, accepting Christ as his personal Saviour in January, 1947, maintaining a constant, positive testimony for Christ to the end.

He leaves his wife and four children, Lawrence Gray, Mrs Margaret Smith, Gilbert Gray, all of Clarinda, and Wilbur Gray of the home, 11 grandchildren, three sisters and three brothers, Frank Gray, Nashville, Tenn, Dr John Gray, San Jose, Calif, Dr Harry Gray, Broadwater, Neb, Mrs Martha Bennett, Rollings, Wyo, Mrs Harriet Vomwig, Omaha, and Mrs Golda Dougherty, New Market, and many other relatives and friends. Guinn, Louise Hembree - Wm. Hembree received the sad news Monday of the death of his twin sister, Mrs Louise Guinn, Mar 9th, which occured at the home of another brother, Foster Hembree at Montgomery, Indiana. Mrs Guinn will be remembered by a number of New Market people, having kept house awhile for Mr Hembree and leaving here about four years ago to make her home with her brother, Foster. Hargis, Chad Eugene - Chad E. Hargis, 17 of Coin, died Sunday afternoon, Aug 6, 1995, at St Joseph's Hospital, Omaha, Ne, as a result of injuries suffered in an auto accident July 29.

Funeral services were at 10 am on Wednesday, Aug 9 from the First United Methodist Church, Shenandoah with Jeff Arnold and Gary Hollers officiating. Interment was in Memory Cemetery, New Market. A memorial to the Highest Praise Scholarship Fund is being established.

Hackett Funeral Home, Shenandoah, was in charge of arrangements.

Chad Eugene Hargis, son of Melvin and Janis (Arthur) Hargis, was born Nov 1, 1977 in Clarinda. His younger years were spent in New Market and Yorktown, later living in Shenandoah with his family for five years.

In 1989, he moved with his family to Coin, where he was home schooled.

Hargis worked at Godfathers and Hy-Vee in Shenandoah. Telemarketing in Essex; and most recently at McDonald's in Clarinda. He loved fishing, animals and his motorcyle.

Preceding his in death were his paternal grandfather, Shorty Hargis; maternal grandparents, Bernice and Carl Arthur.

He is survived by his parents, Melvin and Janis Hargis, Coin; sisters, Cathy Epperly, Council Bluffs; Kim and Jon Haizlip, Omaha; three nieces; paternal grandmother, Lenora Hargis, New Market; aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends. CLARINDA HERALD JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, Aug 9, 1995

Funeral services for Elder "Breezy" Darrell Hargis, 84, of Webster, South Dakota, formerly of Clarinda and New Market were held at 10:00 am on Friday, July 6, 2007, at Walker Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda. Inurnment was at 9:00 am on Saturday, July 7, 2007, in Memory Cemetery in New Market.

Elder passed away on June 30, 2007 at Waterford At All Saints Assisted Living Facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.

Service arrangements were handled by the Walker Merrick Funeral Home of Clarinda.

Elder "Breezy" Darrell Hargis was born on September 8, 1922, in Blairstown, Missouri, to Melvin and Hattie Harriett (Hughes) Hargis. He graduated from New Market, high school with the class of 1939, and completed two years of college in New York state.

On April 25, 1951, Elder and Geraldine Conley were married in Panama City, Panama.

Elder served 28 years in the armed forces, serving in the Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy and the Army Air Corp, reaching the rank of First Sergeant. During his military career he served in the Atlantic Theater during WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. After his military retirement he served several years as the manager of the NCO Club at Lowry AFB in Denver, Colorado.

In 1976, Elder and Geraldine moved to New Market, where he went into business with his brothers Shorty and Jack, doing a variety of farming jobs.

Elder is survived by his son Stephen and wife Sandy Hargis of Webster, South Dakota, Don and wife Shirley Hargis of Clovis, California, daughter Connie and husband Gene Beseau of Sioux City, Iowa, sister-in-law Lenora Hargis of New Market; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Geraldine in 1997, sisters Marie Wilcox, Billie Coulter, Dorothy brown, Ruth Smith, brothers Jack, Shorty and Lyle. Hargis, Geraldine "Gerry" - Mrs Geraldine C. Hargis, 75, of Clarinda, formerly of Shenandoah, died Monday evening, Sept 22nd at Community Care Center of Clarinda where she had been a resident since May, 1995.

She was born June 16, 1922 at Loveland, Co the daughter of Noah G. and Connie Hazel White Conley.

On April 25, 1950 she was married to Elder Darrell Hargis who survives.

Mrs Hargis had been a stenographer for Civil Service. They had lived in New Market and Shenandoah and Mr Hargis had recently moved to Clarinda.

She is survived by her husband Elder, of Clarinda, and three children: Stephen G. Hargis, Shenandoah, Ia; Don D. Hargis, Clovis, Ca; and Connie Louise Beseau and husband Eugene, of Shenandoah. There are 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 Thursday, Sept 25th at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 7-8 pm Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Hargis, Hattie - New Market (Special)--Mrs Mel Hargis, 71, lifelong resident of New Market and vicinity died after a short illness at St Francis hospital, Maryville, at 4 pm Tuesday.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, New Market, this Thursday afternoon with Walker Funeral Home, Clarinda, in charge. The Rev Clarence Moore of Blockton, formerly pastor at New Market, officiated. Burial was in Old Memory cemetery.

Mrs Hattie Hargis was the daughter of Jess Hughes and leaves one brother Marc besides her husband Mel and eight children: Mrs Dorothy Brown, Mrs Veralena Coulter, Keith (Jack), and Merl (Shorty) of New Market; Mrs Marie Wilcox, Clarinda; Mrs Ruth Smith, Stringtown; Lyle Hargis, Shenandoah, and Darrell of Midwest City, Okla. Hargis, Keith "Jack" - Funeral services for Keith J. (Jack) Hargis, 76, of New Market will be at 1:30 am Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, with Rev Don Hargis, a nephew of Mr Hargis' officiating.

Visitation will be from 7-8 pm this Thursday at the funeral home in Clarinda.

Mr Hargis died Tuesday afternoon, Apr 28, 1987, at his home in New Market after a long illness.

He was born Jun 2, 1910, in Page County, the son of Melvin and Hattie (Hughes) Hargis.

On March 1, 1933 he was married to Thelma Slaight who survives.

Mr Hargis had been a farmer and carpenter.

He is survived by his wife of the home and six children; Mrs Walt (Evelyn) Stanton, Glenwood, Ia; Don Hargis, New Market, Ia; Mrs Ed (Janice) Anderson, Hanover Park, Ill; Mrs Clifford (Joyce) Spears, Dardanelle, Ar; Mike Hargis, Shenandoah, Ia, and Mrs Dean (Melva) Churchill, Gravity, Ia. There are 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Brothers and sisters are Darrell Hargis, New Market, Ruth Smith, Lenox, Ia, and Lyle Hargis, Gretna, Ne, Mrs Agatha Slaight of New Market is his mother-in-law.

He was preceded in death by parents, one brother and two sisters.

Hargis, Madeline Joyce - Madeline Joyce Hargis, infant daughter of Muriel and Lenora Hargis, was born September 27, 1941, and departed this life at her home in New Market, Iowa, November 21, 1942, at the age of one year, one month and twenty-five days.

Little Madeline was a bright ray of light wherever she went, always having a happy smile for everyone with whom she came in contact.

Her going leaves a desolate void in the home and hearts of loved ones.

Besides her parents she leaves her grandparents, Mrs Adah Dalrymple and Mr and Mrs Melvin Hargis, her great grandmother, Mrs Rilda Oxley, and great grandparents, D.T. Dalrymples, of Stanbury, Mo, besides numerous aunts and uncles and cousins and a host of friends.

Hargis, Melvin - Melvin Hargis, son of Serepta Ann and Henry Hargis, was born Nov 30, 1881, and died April 17, 1958.

He was married to Hattie Hughes in the year of 1901. She preceded him in death July 6, 1954.

He lived most of his life around New Market and Clarinda. He had been an Odd Fellow for 50 years, for which he had received his 50 year pin on March 17.

There were eight children born to this union, four girls and four boys. Mrs Will (Marie) Wilcox of Clarinda, Mrs Bob (Veralena) Coulter of New Market, Mrs Chick (Dorothy) Brown of New Market, Mrs Harold (Ruth) Smith of Stringtown, Keith (Jack) of Clarinda, Muriel (Shorty) of New Market, Lyle of Shenandoah and Darrell of Midwest City, Okla. Others surviving are: one sister, Golda Persinger of Omaha; 26 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. A sister and a brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church at New Market April 21, conducted by Rev Clarence Moore and Rev Lacy Thompson. Soloist was Mrs Walter Stanton, pianist, Mrs Ben Anderson. Flower attendants were granddaughters, Mrs Harold Ross, Mrs Dutch Bingham, Mrs Kenneth Cooper, Mrs George Jones, Sharon Hargis, Janice Hargis, Joyce Hargis, and one great-granddaughter, Kaye Jones. Casket bearers were grandsons, Bob Wilcox, Charles Brown, Gary Smith, Donald Hargis, Billy Brown and Melvin Hargis. Interment was in the Old Memory Cemetery. Hargis, Muriel - Mr Muriel Hargis, 69, of New Market died this Thursday morning at Municipal Hospital where he was admitted Wednesday.

He was born May 27, 1913, at Clarinda, the son of Melvin and Hattie Hughes Hargis.

In 1941 he was married to Lenora Dalrymple who survives.

Mr Hargis had worked for Taylor County and later for Kelso Homes.

Besides his wife of the home he is survived by three sons, Melvin of Shenandoah, Rodney of New Market and Lannie in the U.S. Navy. There are eight grandchildren. Brothers are Jack of New Market, Lyle of Nebraska, and Darrell of New Market. Sisters are Veralena Coulter of New Market, Dorothy Brown of New Market and Ruth Smith of Lenox. He was preceded in death by two infant daughters, one sister Marie Wilcox and an adopted daughter Ruth Diggs.

Hargis, Thelma H. Slaight - Thelma H. Hargis, 83, of New Market, Iowa, died Monday morning, March 2 at I.H.S. of Clarinda where she had lived for the past 5 1/2 years. She was born May 2, 1914, near New Market the daughter of Orville and Agatha McAlpin Slaight.

On March 1, 1933, she married Keith J. (Jack) Hargis who preceded her in death, April 28, 1987.

Mrs Hargis was a homemaker and had taken care of the housekeeping at the United Methodist Church in New Market.

She is survived by six children: Evelyn Stanton and husband Walt, College Springs, Iowa; Don Hargis and wife Mary, New Market, Iowa; Janice Anderson and husband Ed, Gresham, Oregon; Joyce Spears and husband Clifford, Rogers, Arkansas; Mike Hargis, Shenandoah, Iowa; and Melva Churchill and husband Dean, Gravity, Iowa. There are 21 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Dorris Pratt and husband Darrell, Red Oak.

She was preceded in death by parents, husband and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Thursday, March 5, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Burial was in Memory Cemetery at New Market. Harland, Harry - Harry Harland, 89 of rural New Market died Thursday evening at Goldenrod Manor where he had resided the past three months.

He was born Nov 1, 1888, near Norwich, the son of Albert Clarence and Mary Bieghler Harland. In 1924 he was married to Claris Cade Harland. She preceded him in death last December.

Mr Harland farmed northeast of New Market which was his home until going to the rest home. He was a veteran of W.W. I, serving in France.

He is survived by a stepson, Merle Harland, of New Market and two grandchildren: Mrs Darrell (Doris) Damewood, Clarinda, and Max Harland, Perry. There are five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Mrs Bertha Harland of Clarinda is a sister in law.

Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at the New Market Church of Christ with Loren Daly officiating. Shirley Larson was soloist and Lois Moore, organist. Verla Malcom was at the register. Ushers were: Marvin Runyan and Dick Rainforth. Casket bearers were: Dean Moore, Bob Malcom, Bill Pratt, Thomas Harris, Paul Depew, and Robert Hardee.

Military services were held at the graveside.

Harper, Bill - New Market (Special)--William (Bill) Harper, 71, died Saturday at his home in New Market at 9 am of a heart attack. He had started the mower in preparation to mow his lawn. He sat down to rest and died.

Mr and Mrs Harper have lived in New Market 28 years. He was born at Blanchard. He worked in the recreation halls in New Market for many years. He is a veteran of World War I, a member of the New Market American Legion, and the Elks Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Louise, 2 sons, Darrell Wayne of Marysville, Wash, and Ronald William of Ontario, Calif, two daughter-in-laws, one granddaughter, Brenda Joy, three grandsons, Kenneth, Kevin, and Kelley. His brothers are Charles Harper of College Springs and Ernest Harper in Washington.

Harper, Homer - Homer Harper was born on a farm near Oskaloosa, Iowa, on August 24, 1875, and died on Nov 19, 1947, at the age of 72 years, 2 months and 26 days.

His father was Jacob Harper and his mother was Sarah Harper. To this union were born two children, Homer Harper and one daughter, Ora Hutsonpillar.

The family moved to Taylor county, Iowa, in 1882 and subsequently moved to a farm southwest of New Market in Page county, where the family lived for many years. The father passed away in May, 1917, and the mother in June 1934.

He left surviving him his sister, Ora Hutsonpillar, now of Clearmont, Wyoming.

Harris, Cornelia Cavender - Shambaugh -Our town was shocked Wednesday morning when the death of Mrs Kit Harris was announced, which occurred the night before at 11 o'clock, after an illness of a few days of typhoid fever. Mrs Harris was a kind, loving wife and mother, and will be much missed by her family. At the time of her death she was 43 years old and is survived by her grief stricken husband and seven children--four daughters and three sons. Funeral services were held from the Brick church, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by a Baptist minister from New Market, where the interment took place in the Old Memory cemetery. New Market--Mrs Lee Holiday and children, of Columbus Junction, arrived in New Market Saturday evening, called by the serious illness of her mother, Mrs S. Harris.

Grandma Harris died Sunday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs McDonald. The funeral services were held Monday morning in the Baptist church, of which she had been a faithful member for years, after which her body was laid to rest in the Memory cemetery. Harris, Perry Dean -

Perry Dean Harris, 24, Clarinda, died early Saturday morning, April 13, 1991, in an auto accident north of Clarinda.

He was born Sept 22, 1966, at Rogers, Ark, the son of Charles M. Harris and Margie Allison Harris.

He attended South Page High School and spent three years in the Army. He was a member of Reserve Unit 312 at Creston. Mr Harris was employed by O'Neil Electric at Red Oak.

He is survived by his mother Margie Harris of Clarinda where he made his home and father Charles Harris in Spain. Also surviving is a brother Charles Harris of Clarinda, sister, Mrs Lance (Kimberly) Henn of Huntington Beach, Calif. His grandfather is Wm. F. Harris of Pennsylvania.

Visitation will be from 7-8 pm this Monday evening at Walker Merrick Funeral home.

Harris, Sarah Ann Eggers - Mason Twp--Death came this Monday morning to Mrs Sarah Harris, 97, mother of Thomas Harris. She has been living at the Clarinda Rest Home since Aug 23 and previously was making her home with her son.

She was born March 28, 1877, in Illinois, married in 1898 to Walter Harris, who died in 1952. The family home has been on the farm in Mason Township, southeast of New Market.

She had lived in Missouri and Iowa in early years, coming to this vicinity in 1917. She was active with Church of Christ and Order of Eastern Star.

Besides her son Thomas, she is survived by a granddaughter, Mrs Phil Hardee, three great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs Charles Cook of Lockwood, Mo.

Harris, Thomas L. - Mr Thomas L. Harris, 80 of rural New Market died at his home Monday afternoon.

He was born March 2, 1903 near Gravity, the son of Walter and Sarah Ann Eggers Harris.

His family moved to his present home south of New Market when he was 15 years old and he spent the rest of his life on that farm.

On Jan 1, 1925 he married Vera Cavender who died in 1964.

On Dec 23, 1979 he married Naomi Gant who survives.

He is also survived by a daughter, Mrs Phil (Janice) Hardee of rural Clarinda, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Step-children are Roger Gant of rural Bedford, Mrs David (Karolyn) Hughes of rural Clarinda and Mrs Clark (Lorene) Davison of Loveland, Co, and six step grandchildren.

Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at the New Market Church of Christ with Loren Daly and Jon Palmquist officiating.

Burial was in Memory cemetery with Masonic services at the graveside.

Harris, Walter Silas - Walter Silas Harris, son of Silas D. and Sarah O. Harris, was born on a farm in Gentry county, Mo, June 30, 1877 and died at the Municipal hospital in Clarinda, Feb 26, 1952, at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 26 days.

He was united in marriage to Sarah A. Eggers, May 11, 1898. To this union was born one son, Thomas L. who, with his wife and daughter have resided with his parents on the farm.

Mr Harris was a successful farmer having spent his entire life at this occupation. He had been in failing health for the past ten years which forced him to retire from active farming and finally resulted in his death.

He united with the Church of Christ while in his teens and remained faithful to his profession during the intervening years. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, Plumb lodge No 285 and the New Market chapter No 481 of Eastern Star.

Mr Harris was a man of christian character and clean habits living a life above reproach.

Those who survive are his wife Sarah, son Thomas, sister Mrs May Robb of Bedford and several other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held from the New Market Church of Christ at 2 pm Friday, Feb 29, 1952, with the Rev I.E. Stickelman in charge, assisted by the Rev Phil Prickett. Music was furnished by Ed Owens, Clara Cabbage, Verla Malcom and Orville Cabbage. Pianist was Opal Brown. Flower bearers were, Mae Thurman, Ermal Kelso, Bessie Wells, and Dessie Fine. Pallbearers were, Vern Melvin, Ernest Gray, Emery Hardee, Ora Cade, Johnnie Mankle and Lewis Wells. Hartman, Arvilla Reeves - Arvilla Hartman, who had been ill but a few days, passed away at her home in New Market, Iowa, at 11:15 Saturday night. Arvilla Reeves, only daughter of Susannah Pall [sic, Pace] and Norval Reeves, was born in Page county, Iowa, November 29, 1875, and entered into rest March 22, 1941, at the age of 65 years, 3 months and 22 days. She was the mother of three children, Bruce, Phyllis, and Lois. Left to mourn her loss are the three children, one brother, Walter Reeves, nine grandchildren, two nieces, and other relatives besides a host of friends. She united with the Methodist church of New Market where she remained a loyal worker. May her influence linger as a gragrance [?] in all our lives.

Hartman, Douglas - Douglas Hartman, ill for nine months following a stroke of paralysis, died at his home at Rockport, Mo, Tuesday morning. Mr Hartman was until eight years ago barber at New Market, being well acquainted in west Taylor and east Page counties.

The funeral services will be held at Rockport, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Christian church, the family to bring the body back to Old Memory for burial. The short service there will be at about 4 o'clock. His four children will be present, Miss Lois Hartman of New Market, Mrs R.E. Snodgrass of Pittsburg, Pa, Mrs E.A. Douglas Hartman, who at one time was a resident and barber of New Market, passed away on last Tuesday at his late home at Rockport, Mo., after a nine months' illness, caused by a stroke of paralysis. Hayden, Carrie - Dallas Twp--Mrs Edith Hamilton of Old Memory received word that her sister Carrie, Mrs Harry Hayden, had passed away at her home in Pueblo, Colo, Tuesday. Although she had been in poor health, her death was very sudden, and she was ill a short time. Mr Hayden will arrive with the body in Villisca Friday morning about seven o'clock. Mrs Hayden was the oldest of the family and is survived by her husband, six brothers and two sisters.

Mrs Carrie M. Hayden, wife of Harry B. Hayden, retired Santa Fe railroad employe, died October 20 at the family home 1618 East 12th street, Pueblo, Colorado.

Mrs Hayden was born in Almont, Michigan, in 1870, and later moved to New Market, Iowa, where burial will be made. She resided there until 1892. In 1894 she was married and with the exception of a few years, she and Mr Hayden have lived in Colorado.

Funeral services were held at 2 pm Wednesday, Oct 22, at the Rouch Chapel in Pueblo. A short service was held in the Hamilton home at New Market Friday, Oct 24, before burial in Old Memory cemetery.

Mrs Hayden was the sister of William Hamilton and George Hamilton of Montrose, Colo; Bruce Hamilton of Holly, Colo, and Glade, Hugh, Claude and Edith Hamilton and Mrs Irene Drennen of New Market. She is also the sister of Rosena Nichols and Calvin Hamilton, who have deceased. Her father and mother, Mr and Mrs Hugh Hamilton, have deceased.

Hayden, Harry B. - Harry B. Hayden, 78, of Pueblo, Colo, died Thursday in the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe hospital in Topeka, Kans.

The body was brought here and funeral services were conducted Saturday by Rev Clarence Moore of New Market. The funeral was held at the home of Mr Hayden's sister-in-law, Edith Hamilton, west of New Market. Burial was in Old Memory cemetery.

Hayes, James S. - Another old settler, who for more than thirty-five years has been a resident of the New Market vicinity passed to his reward in the death on March 19th of J.E. Hayes.

Mr Hayes was a civil war veteran being 80 years, five months and fourteen days of age at time of death. He is survived by his wife and six children.

Hayes, Paul Wayne - Paul Wayne Hayes, the youngest son of James Stricker and Sarah Elizabeth Barker Hayes, was born on November 21, 1898 in Page County, Iowa; and he passed away at the Colonial Manor in Corning, Iowa on July 20, 1982 at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 29 days.

On June 19, 1918 he was united in marriage with Vera Leona Driftmier, the daughter of Edward and Jane Driftmier at the Presbyterian parsonage in Clarinda, Iowa. This union was blessed with the birth of four daughters: Berniece, Marjorie, Jeanne and Janice.

Paul was a farmer or construction worker most of his life...he enjoyed animals in his farming and operating heavy equipment in his construction work. The family lived in Omaha, Nebraska a few years while Paul did construction work, but then returned to farming near Prescott, Iowa where Paul & Vera later retired to.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers and 3 sisters; his wife, Vera on Aug 21, 1971; his daughter, Berniece Campbell on Sept 8, 1980; by his son-in-law, Robert Hair; and by an infant grandson, Paul David Hair.

Paul loved to visit with his family and friends. He is survived by his three daughters: Marjorie Wood and her husband Francis and Jeanne Hair, all of Prescott, Iowa; and Janice Smart and her husband Robert of Osceola, Iowa; and by a son-in-law, Ronald Campbell of Corning, Iowa. He was very proud of the achievements of his seven grandchildren and his ten great-grandchildren. His grandchildren are: Kathlyn (Mrs Dannie) Schafer of Corning; Sidney Wood of Prescott; Christine (Mrs Robert) Dunn Jr of Nodaway; Madelyn (Mrs Dean) Williams of Prescott; Michele Smart of Ames; and Scott and Patricia Smart of Osceola; and by other relatives and friends.

 

Hayes, Reatha B. Hunter - Reatha B. Hayes, 78, Maryville, died unexpectedly Monday, June 13, 1988, at St Francis Hospital in Maryville.

The daughter of Blaine C. and Alma (Weaver) Hunter, she was born Nov 5, 1909, at Bedford, Iowa. On Feb 1, 1928, at Bedford, she married Cecil John Hayes, who preceded her in death in 1977.

Hayes was also preceded in death by her father, in 1964, her mother, in 1970; one daughter, Hazel Swaney, in 1967; one brother, Harold Hunter, in 1973; and an infant sister.

survivors include three sons, Leland, Skidmore, Donald, Indianola, Iowa and Duane, O'Neil, Neb; 17 grandchildren; one brother, Jim Hunter, King City; and 41 great-grandchildren. Hayes was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church and Senior Citizens Center in Maryville.

Funeral services will be 10:30 am Thursday (June 16) at Price Funeral Home in Maryville, the Rev Robert Allen officiating. Visitation will be 7-8 pm Wednesday (June 15) at Price Funeral Home.

Burial will be in the Old Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa.

Memorials can be made to the First Christian Church or Senior Citizens Center in Maryville.

On June 20, 1897, she was united in marriage with Jacob William Hays. To this union six children were born: Robert E. of California, Elba J. of North Dakota, Hershel T. of California, Vollie F. of Venture, Ia, Mernie C. of Clarinda, and William B. who preceded his mother in death in September, 1953. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan 19, 1932.

She leaves to mourn her passing five sons, one sister, Mrs Clara Dailey, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of friends.

Hazelbaker, James Albert - James A. Hazelbaker, 90, died at the Young Rest Home in Clarinda Saturday afternoon after a lengthy illness.

Mr Hazelbaker was born in Taylor County, and had lived near New Market before moving to Clarinda about 50 years ago. Mr Hazelbaker was born Sept 23, 1867.

He was an active member of the Assembly of God Church. For many years before his retirement he had been a custodian for the Clarinda public schools and he had charge of the junior high building at the time of his retirement.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs Dollie Hazelbaker at the home at 308 E Garfield; two sons, John E. Hazelbaker at West Des Moines and Paul Hazelbaker of Ft Dodge, one daughter, Mrs Wilma Brady of Omaha, Nebr; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Hazelbaker, Mary Iva Baker - Mary Iva, daughter of Samuel and Prudence Margaret Baker, was born February 1, 1871, on a farm in Taylor county, near New Market, and died at her farm home, six miles west of Pattonsburg, May 26, 1949 at the age of 78 years, three months and 26 days.

She was married to John R. Hazelbaker, May 8, 1885, and to this union five children were born: Loy, at home, Arthur of Alliance, Nebr, Mrs Howard and Mrs Viola Doty, both of Pattonsburg, and Clara, who did at the age of two and a half years. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, the four children, 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was the last of four children. She professed her faith in Christ many years ago.

She had been in failing health the past five years.

Services were held in the New Market Baptist church, Sunday, May 29, at 2 pm, with the Rev J.B. Starkey in charge. Robert V. Dunham of Pattonsburg sang.

Five grandsons and one nephew were casket bearers. Burial was in the Memory cemetery. Head, Theresa Valeda Werts - Theresa Valeda Head, daughter of Worthy and Nettie Werts, was born at the farm home near New Market, Iowa January 31, 1906. She died following an operation at the Mt Pleasant Memorial hospital June 9, 1950, at the age of 44 years, 4 months and 9 days.

She attended the rural school at Hawleyville and later graduated from the New Market high school with the class of 1924. She united with the Methodist church of Hawleyville December of 1924.

She was united in marriage to Raymond Head, June 8, 1924, and to this union two daughters were born Wiona Hummell, of Mt Pleasant and Donna Lee, of New Market.

She has served as cook at the Farmers Lodge at the state hospital at Mt Pleasant for the past ten years.

Her great love of nature was found in the cultivation of her flower garden, which was a source of much pleasure to her.

She leaves to mourn her passing her parents, Mr and Mrs Worthy Werts; two daughters, Mrs Melvin Hummell, of Mt Pleasant, and Donna Lee, of New Market; one sister, Mrs Kenneth Pratt, of New Market; and two grandchildren and a host of relatives.

Her body was kept in state Saturday at the Cookes Funeral Home at Mt Pleasant, later being transferred to the Walker Funeral Home for services and burial.

Funeral services were held at the Walker Funeral Home Monday, June 12, 1950, with burial in the Memory cemetery. Clergyman was the Rev Arthur Marston, of Shambaugh. Pallbearers were her classmates: Thomas Harris, Louis Hawhee, Harold Hakes, Guy Noble, Lawrence Werts, and Willis D. Weaver. Horace and Thelma Stone provided the music. Herren, Kemp Goodlow, son of James David and Mary Louise Herren, was born at Huntsville, Logan county, Ohio, Jan 20, 1861, and departed this life Wednesday morning, Jan 24, 1923, at 12:20 o'clock, age 62 years and 4 days, at his home in New Market, Iowa, after a lingering illness of nine years, being stricken with paralysis, his last illness being only a few days. He was a patient sufferer until the end, everything being "all right."

He came with his parents from Ohio in 1868 to Rovana, Mercer county, Mo., and March, 1870, moved to Clarinda, Page county, Iowa, and has lived in this vicinity until his death.

On Dec 8, 1892, he was united in marriage to Retta May Hiatt and unto this union four children were born, Mrs Walter Noble, Mrs Ray McNutt, Mrs Paul Clark and James David Herren, all of New Market, Iowa.

Besides these four children he is survived by his wife, one brother, C.L. Herren of Clarinda, Iowa; five sisters, Mrs Henry Annan, Mrs Jesse McCowen of Clarinda, Iowa; Mrs Lottie Turner of Coin, Iowa; Mrs Catherine Wagner of New Market, Iowa, and Mrs J.L. Elgin of Des Moines, Iowa, besides a host of relatives and friends. Two brothers, Don Victor Herren, M.D., died at Corning, Calif, Jan 27, 1906, and Harley Herren, at Spokane, Wash, in March, 1917; also his mother and father preceded him in death.

He was an earnest laborer, always trying to gain that he might give to others.

During his late sickness he confessed Christ as his Savior, was baptized and united with the Methodist Episcopal church of New Market, Rev E. O. Smith being his pastor.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the Methodist Episcopal church in New Market, conducted by Rev E.O. Smith, and the body was laid to rest in the Memory cemetery. Relatives were pall bearers as follows: Walter Noble, Ray McNutt, Paul Clark, sons-in-law; Frank Millhone, nephew by marriage; Jesse McCowen and William Butler, brothers-in-law. Herren, Retta May Hiatt - Retta May Hiatt, daughter of C.C. and Martha Hiatt, was born in Clinton county, Ohio, January 31, 1866, and departed this life February 4, 1939, aged 73 years and 4 days.

She came from Ohio with her parents in a covered wagon when nine months of age. She with her parents settled on the farm just west of town known at present as the Tuttle place. Later they moved to a farm in Page county, known as the C.C. Hiatt homestead. She was a successful school teacher, having taught 18 terms in Page and Taylor counties.

On December 8, 1892, she was united in marriage at Clarinda to Kemp Goodlow Herren. For 31 years they spent their married life in Page and Taylor counties.

To this union four children were born: Zetta Lenore, Ruby Lorene, Holly Lucille and James David.

On January 23, 1923, her companion passed away. For 16 years she has made her home alone.

She was a member of the Methodist church since girlhood. She always did her part when health permitted. She was a member of the present Methodist Ladies Aid.

She was a member of the Sunshine class of the Methodist church. Tuesday, Jan 31, 1939, she celebrated her 73rd birthday with a birthday dinner. Twelve members of her class shared her birthday joy with her on that day.

She was a woman of fine virtues and sterling character. Honesty was one of her chief characteristics.

She leaves to mourn her death her children and their families: Mr and Mrs Walter Noble and Mr and Mrs Paul Clark of New Market; Mr and Mrs Ray McNutt of Omaha, Nebr, and Mr and Mrs David Herren of Pittsburg, Penn; eight grandchildren, Thomas Fredrick and Billy Kemp Noble, twins; Robert Burton; Mary Lou and Shirley Mae McNutt; Jimmie Herren Clark; Joyce Faye Herren and her youngest, John David Herren, to whom she was very devoted. She also leaves one brother, W.H. Hiatt, of Cleo Springs, Okla; two sisters, Mrs Lenna Hatfield of Hydro, Okla, and Mrs Ollie Andrew of Kansas City, Mo; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends and neighbors. Herrington, Mary Hankins - Thursday, Feb 1, 1894, at her home in Bedford, Mrs Polk Herrington, aged 30 years.

Funeral services were conducted at the family residence by Rev M.C. Waddell, of the M.E. church, Friday at 1 pm. The remains were taken to the home of the deceased's parents, who live near Gravity, the same evening and were taken from thence to the Old Memory cemetery for interment. Hiatt, Columbus C. - Columbus C. Hiatt died last Saturday at his home in East River township, about one mile south of Memory, of Bright's disease. He was an old settler of East River township, a splendid man, highly respected. He leaves a widow and children, one of the latter being Mrs Kemp Herron of Clarinda. Hiatt, Timothy Wayne - Timothy Wayne Hiatt died of a car accident...Timothy Wayne Hiatt was born Aug 13, 1967, at Clarinda, the son of Larry and Grace (Baker) Hiatt.

He attended New Market High School and was a graduating senior this year.

Hicks, Corda Jones - Funeral services for Cordia B. Hicks, held Oct 2 at New Market Methodist Church, were conducted by Rev Clarence Potter. Mrs Hicks died Sunday, Sept 29 at Corning, Ia, at the age of 66 years, 10 months and 22 days. Burial was at Old Memory Cemetery at New Market.

The following obituary was included in the services: Cordia B. Jones, daughter of Frank and May Jones, was born on November 7, 1896 in Page county. She received her schooling in East River township and New Market schools.

In July, 1932, she was united in marriage to Doyle Hicks. Cordia spent the remaining 52 years of her life in their home in New Market, Iowa.

She was a great lover of flowers and a beautiful seamstress and was a milliner by trade. She did most beautiful fancy work.

Mrs Hicks was a member of the Methodist Church from the time she was 18 years of age.

Cordia was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle, who died in May of 1945. She is survived by her mother, Mrs May Jones of New Market; her sister, Eva Sparks of Gravity; three sisters and six nephews; two uncles and three aunts; other relatives and many friends. Hicks, Gertrude - Mrs Loy Hicks, 48, died Saturday morning after many years of ill health, concluded by hospitalization at the municipal hospital for several weeks. Hicks, Jasper Newton - Jasper Newton Hicks was born at Ladoga, Iowa, November 9, 1859 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Elmer Eighmy, in New Market, Ia, November 30, 1927, at the age of 68 years and 21 days.

He was united in marriage to Miss Hettie E. Welch, November 26, 1883, and to this union were born eight children, six of whom survive. Cressie died in infancy and Archie at the age of five years. The surviving children are Lee, Larry, Bessie, Loy, Val and Harry. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs Elizabeth Davison of Clarinda and Mrs Almyra Davison of Aberdeen, S. Dak, and two brothers, Rufus and Elisha Hicks.

Deceased became a member of the M.E. Church early in life and has always been an earnest and devout Christian. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and citizen, and leaves a large circle of friends who mourn his death.

Hicks, Loy Lavanche - Loy Lavanche Hicks, son of Hettie E. and Jasper N. Hicks, was born Aug 15, 1893, at New Market, Ia, and died from a heart attack at his home in Clarinda, Ia, Sunday, June 2, 1957, age 63 years, nine months and 17 days.

He received his education in the New Market Public School and at an early age became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Loy made his home in New Market until World War I, when he became the first volunteer enlistment from New Market since the country had been at war with Germany. He volunteered and enlisted as a first class private, Co F, Villisca, Ia, National Guard, June 4, 1917. He left for active duty oversears Oct 18, 1917, with the 42nd Rainbow Division, 168th US Infanty. While overseas, Loy served in the AEF and was in the battles of Lorraine, Champagne, Marne, St Mihiel, Argonne Forest and Chateau Thiery. He was severely wounded and gassed in the battle of Chateau Thiery, also suffered burns to face and lungs from a high explosive enemy shell. after a few weeks he returned to active duty and was again sent to the hospital on account of gas he received in the Argonne drive. April 25, 1919, he returned to the United States where he received an honorable discharge from the United States Army.

After the war he went to Nashwauk, Minn, where he was employed in the ore mines. While there he met Miss Gertrude Shook and they were married Dec 26, 1923, Page County, Ia. They resided in Nashwauk until 1925 when they moved to the Hicks farm in Nebraska Township. Here their only son, William Loy, was born.

In 1935 they left the farm and located in Clarinda where Loy found employment as night man at Berry's Poultry Farm. This position he held until the first of this year when he was forced to resign on account of ill health, after 15 years of service.

His wife Gertrude passed away in Clarinda May 23, 1942.

Besides his son Bill and daughter-in-law, he leaves to mourn his loss one granddaughter, Catherine Marie Hicks, and one grandson, Jeffery William Hicks; three brothers, Lee of Grand Rapids, Minn, Harry L. of Creston, Ia, and Val of New Market; also one sister, Bessie Hicks Eighmy of New Market.

His parents, two brothers, Archie and Larry, and one infant sister, Cressie, preceded him in death.

Services were held at 10 am June 5 from the Walker Funeral Home with the Rev Lester Greenwood officiating. Music was furnished by Aletha L. Hutchings at the organ. Casket bearers were C.T. "Parson" Bales, Abel Greenway Sr, Jake Bonsall, C.C. McKay, Raymond Morris and Fin Fisher, all members of the famous 168th Infantry, Co F, Rainbow Division in which the deceased served during World War I. Military rites were given at the graveside. Hipsley, Earl - Earl Hipsley, 85, of New Market died early Saturday morning at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg where he had been a patient for two weeks following an auto accident Aug 12 near Sidney. The accident occurred as he was on his way home from visiting his daughter in California.

Mr Hipsley was born Jan 14, 1887, at Rushville, Neb, the son of Asa Truman and Ella S. Stickley Hipsley. His wife Edna died in 1967. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs C.E. (Verna Grace) Green of San Anselmo, Calif, and three grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held this Monday morning at Walker Funeral Home with Loren Daly of New Market officiating. Norma Kramer was organist. Honorary bearers were Joe Hipsley, Orie Thompson, Carl Snodgrass, Eugene McAlpin, Charles Thompson, and Glen Gillett. Casket bearers were Vanzo Drennen, Muriel Hargis, John Mike Hipsley, Orville Wood, Orville Preeo and Gene Renshaw. Burial was in Memory Cemetery at New Market. Hoffman, Drue Anderson - New Market (Special)--Drue Hoffman, 63, life-long resident of the New Market area, died of a heart attack at his home in New Market Monday at 3 pm. He had been in failing health several months.

Surviving are his wife, Elva; a daughter, Mrs Orval (Laverna) Ridnour; four grandchildren, Mrs Phyllis Chubick of Colorado Springs, Colo, Duane, Gloria and Melva Ridnour; two brothers, Wilbur and Clarence; two sisters, Mrs Alta Diggs of Gravity and Mrs Anna Belle Mayall of Clarinda.

Funeral service was held Wednesday at the New Market Church of Christ.

Hoffman, Elva Teeters - New Market, Oct 12--Funeral services for Elva Hoffman were at the Church of Christ Friday, 2 pm with Clarence N. Potter officiating. Clara Elva Teeters, daughter of Daniel and Emmaline Teeters, was born June 21, 1898, in Mason Township, Taylor County, Ia, and passed away at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda Tuesday, Oct 4, 1960 at 12:20 pm at the age of 62 years, three months and 13 days.

She was buried with Him by Baptism in August, 1910, at New Market and was a member of the New Market Church of Christ ever since.

On Nov 24, 1915 she was united in marriage to Drue N. Hofman in Clarinda, Ia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Elizabeth, and her husband.

She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter LaVerna and husband, Orval Ridnour of New Market; four grandchildren, Phyllis Chubick of Canon City, Colo, Duane Ridnour, a student at Tarkio College, Tarkio, Mo, Gloria and husband, Marvin Baldwin, of Nodaway, Ia, and Melva Ridnour of New Market, Ia, one great-granddaughter, Lucinda Renea Baldwin of Nodaway, Ia, two brothers, John Teeters of New Market and Frank Teeters of Omaha, Neb, 14 nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

She lived all of her life near New Market and Clarinda, Ia. Elva and Drue had been in business in New Market since 1935.

Holland, Albert F. - Funeral services for Albert F. Holland, 79, of New Market will be at 2 pm Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Del VandeKrol officiating.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 7:30-8:30 pm this Thursday evening.

Mr Holland died Tuesday morning at his home in New Market following a lengthy illness.

He was born Dec 5, 1903, near New Market, the son of Elihu and Fannie Hunt Holland.

He was married to Ruby McAlpin on February 2, 1927. He has been a lifelong resident of the New Market area. He had farmed and worked at the Berry Seed Co.

Besides his wife of the home he is survived by one son, Donald of Guam, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Sisters are Dessie Fine and Pauline Sparks, both of New Market.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and a son, Willie.

Holland, Frank - Frank Holland, 68, died Tuesday, May 15 at his farm home south of New Market following a heart attack.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in New Market Thursday afternoon, May 17. Rev L.M. Pence, pastor of the church officiated. Burial was in Memory cemetery.

Frank Holland, son of Andrew and Laura Holland, was born in Greenville, Tenn, March 5, 1894 and died at the age of 68 years, two months, ten days.

He came to Taylor county, Iowa, in 1912 and was united in marriage to Alice Mae Wells on Frebruary 16, 1916 in Clarinda. They were engaged in farming near New Market most of the time until recent years, when his health would not permit.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Earl Holland; a half-sister, Mollie Patterson of Denver, Colo; and a half-brother, Sam Holland of Redding.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Mae Holland, his companion for 46 years; one daughter, Jennie, Mrs Ed Glidden of Hopkins; two sisters, Mrs Mae Vaughn of Churckey, Tenn, Mrs Coy Dunn of Afton, Tenn; four brothers, George Holland of Lenox, Perry Holland of Johnson City, Tenn, Marshall Holland of Knoxville, Tenn, Bert Holland of Churckey,Tenn; two half-sisters, Mrs Emma Johnson of Guss, Mrs Mattie Gass of Chuckey; seven grandchildren. Holland, Ruby McAlpin - Funeral services for Mrs Ruby Holland, 80, of New Market will be at 1:30 pm on Saturday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, with Rev Fred Malone officiating.

Mrs Holland died May 7, 1986 in the evening at Goldenrod Manor.

She was born Feb 25, 1906 at New Market, the daughter of Willie and Amanda (Weaver) McAlpin.

She was married to Albert Holland on Feb 2, 1927. Mr Holland died in 1983.

Mrs Holland is survived by a son, Donald Holland, Kalonia Pohnpei and seven grandchildren. Sisters are Agatha Slaight, New Market, Susana Dougherty, Chula, Mo, and Norma Brabson of New Mexico.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, Willie.

Howes, Susan Alice Plowman - Susan Alice Plowman, the daughter of Sarah and Noah Plowman, was born at Anchusa, Ill, August 10, 1866, and departed from this life July 15, 1946, at the age of 79 years and 11 months. She was the last surviving member of this family consisting of two sisters and two brothers.

In 1883 she was united in marriage to Isaac Howes, who preceded her in death in 1935. To this union two sons and two daughters were born, Earl Howes and Mrs James Pullen, both of Clarinda, and a son Archie and a daughter Lela who died in infancy.

She had been a member of the Methodist church at New Market, Iowa, for many years and a faithful attendant of their services until the afflictions of her later years prevented her from doing so.

In addition to a son and a daughter, she leaves to mourn their loss six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild and many other relatives, friends and neighbors who will remember her for her many acts of kindness and thoughtfulness during the years she was able to be with them.

Howes, Uriah - Just before quitting time Wednesday afternoon, Uriah Howes, uncle of Earl Howes of Clarinda, was killed by falling lumber while at work in a newly dug well at the new high school in New Market. It was about six o'clock and the men had just struck water when Mr Howes went down in the well to curb it up. The men at the top were lowering him the boards to work with, when they slipped, striking the man in the well and knocking him unconscious. A doctor was called immediately, the victim removed from the well, but he died very shortly after the accident. The body was taken directly to Eno's funeral home.

The victim was a man 48 years old, a coal miner by occupation, but did odd jobs around New Market when the coal business was slack. A widow and seven children are left to mourn their loss, besides three brothers, Isaac and John of New Market and Ben of Gravity, and a sister in Maine. He has been around New Market for the most of his life, having been born near Corning and moved down about 25 years ago, and had a crowd of friends there who were grieved at his mishap.

The funeral was held from the Baptist church of New Market with interment in Memory Cemetery, at 2:30 Friday afternoon.

This is the second major misfortune which has come into this family in the last two weeks. Some few days ago the brother, John, had a stroke of paralysis and is suffering from the effects of that. Lindsey, John Amrose "Brosie"

New Market, Nov 17--Mrs I.M. Lindsey received a telegram Friday morning, notifying her that her son, J.A. (Brosie) Lindsey, 67 had died Thursday, Nov 15. He has been quite ill at his home in Buckley, Wash, for some time. Brosie, as he was known to his many friends was born in Dallas township [Taylor Co, Iowa], son of the later John and Mrs I.M. Lindsey. He grew to manhood in this community and was married to Dollie Hembree of Bedford. Soon afterward he and his wife moved to the western states, making their home the past 25 years at Buckley, Wash. He leaves his wife, his aged mother; and son; G.A. Lindsey of Palmer, Alaska; two daughter, Mrs Kenneth Pichenor of Clatskanie, Ore; Mrs Bill Bradford of Reuton, Wash; six grandchildren; one sister, Mrs D. Otte, Martha Viola Mueller - Funeral services for Mrs Orval (Martha) Otte, 66, of rural Clarinda will be held at Immanuel Lutheran church Wednesday, at 2 pm.

Rev Gary Arp will officiate and interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran church cemetery.

The family will meet friends and relatives at the Clarinda Memorial Chapel Tuesday from 7 to 8 pm.

Mrs Otte died Sunday evening [Feb 20] at Hand Community hospital in Shenandoah following a lengthy illness with cancer.

She was born April 30, 1910 at California, Mo, the daughter of Rev William and Clara Goller Mueller.

In 1926 she moved with her parents to Clarinda where her father was pastor at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She graduated from Clarinda high school in 1929, working as cashier and bookkeeper for J.C. Penney Co and as bookkeeper and teller at Citizens State Bank.

She married Orval Otte on Oct 13, 1935 at Immanuel Lutheran church.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1950.

Mrs Otte was a member of Immanuel Ladies Aid, Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Country Garden Club.

She is survived by her husband, Orval; four children, Lt Col C.W. Otte of Phoenix, Az; Mrs Larry (Irma) Sunderman and Mrs Paul (Vera) Fastenau of Clarinda, and Mrs Gerald (Ruth) Miller of Essex; and 11 grandchildren.

Otte, Orval Edward Joseph - Funeral services for Orval Edward Joseph Otte will be held this Saturday at 2 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mr Otte died this Thurday [Mar 8] morning at the University of Nebraska hospital in Omaha. Burial will be in the Immanuel Church Cemetery.

He was born April 1, 1913, the son of Charley and Minnie Otte. He was baptized one week later at Immanuel Lutheran Church, and was confirmed May 8, 1927.

He was married to Martha Mueller of California, Mo, Oct 13, 1935. He lived and farmed his entire life on the home farm seven miles northwest of Clarinda. He was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and enjoyed his participation in church work.

Magic shows were his hobby and he gained personal fulfillment from entertaining others. He had been in declining health for the past few years.

He was proceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1977, and his brother, John, in 1978.

Survivors include one son and three daughters, Dr C.W. Otte of Cedar Falls, Mrs Larry (Irma) Sunderman and Mrs Paul (Vera) Fastenau of Clarinda and Mrs Gerald (Ruth) Miller of Essex; 11 grandchildren, a nephew, Oren Otte of Clarinda; and his mother-in-law, Clara Mueller of the Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda. Pfander, Allen O. - Allen O. "Al" Pfander, 61, longtime Clarinda resident, died Saturday morning at the Red Oak County Club, where he had gone with other Clarinda golfers to play in a tournament.

He was born July 21, 1912, at Clarinda, the son of Allen V. and Irene Fleenor Pfander. He was married to June Dimmick in 1934. Mr Pfander was a salesman selling chemicals and veterinary supplies. He was formerly associated with the Berry Seed Co for 25 years.

Mr Pfander was a veteran of wWII, and active, member of Clarinda A's Ind Board, and member of the United Presbyterian Church.

Besides his wife of the home, he is survived by three children, Mrs Dave (Donna) Lovinger of Minnetonka, Minn, Joseph Pfander of Seattle, Wash, and Rick Pfander of Des Moines. There are 4 grandchildren. George Pfander of rural Braddyville is a brother. Sisters are Mrs Lowell (Virginia) Strong of Sidney, and Mrs Virgil (Jane) Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo. His mother, Mrs Irene Pfander is of rural Braddyville.

Funeral services for Mr Pfander were held this Monday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with the Rev Wayne Fisher officiating. Grace Perry was organist and Karen Moldenhauer soloist. Pfander, Irene Elizabeth Fleener - Funeral services for Mrs Irene Elizabeth Pfander, 94, of Clarinda will be at 1:30 pm Friday at Trinity Presbyterian Church with Rev Charles Bulger officiating.

Mrs Pfander died Wednesday morning, April 12, 1989 at Bethesda Care Center where she had been a resident since February 1988.

She was born May 15, 1894 in Page County, the daughter of John and Luma Jane Bolen Fleener. On Dec 27, 1912 she was married to Allen V. Pfander, who preceded her in death in 1948.

Mrs Pfander had been secretary at the junior high school, retiring in 1958.

She lived at Clarhaven and then spent two years with a grandson, Robert Strong of Coin, before going to Bethesda Care Center.

Mrs Pfander is survived by three children and a daughter-in-law: Mrs Virgil (Mary Jane) Anderson of Howey-in-the-Hills, Fl, George Pfander of Bedford, Mrs Lowell (Virginia) Strong of Sidney, and Mrs Allen (June) Pfander Jr of Clarinda. There are 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Orpha Howell of Ankeny.

Preceding Mrs Pfander in death were her parents, husband, son, Allen Jr; two great-grandchildren, Jay Jorgenson and Lee Norton; two sons-in-law; John Robert Okerlin and Virgil Anderson; brother Otis and grandson-in-law Jerry Jorgenson.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Smith, Harold A. - New Market - Relatives here received word of the death Monday of Harold Smith, 51, of near Lenox, who was stricken with a heart attack and taken to the Corning hospital, passing away at 3:30 pm. Smith, Violet Ruth Hargis - Violet Ruth Smith was born December 30, 1907 in Coffee County, Kansas, the daughter of Melvin and Hattie Hughes Hargis. She graduated from New Market High School in the Class of 1927.

On June 6, 1928, she was united in marriage to Harold Smith in Clarinda, Iowa, by Pastor D.H. Shenton, with Keith Hargis and Velma Jones as attendants. Born to this union was a son Gary and a daughter Naomi Jean.

Harold was a butter maker and Ruth a housewife.

Harold's job working for creameries kept them moving. They lived in Afton, Winterset, Bethany, Mo, and finally to Stringtown.

Harold and Ruth were baptized together on December 20, 1940 at the First Christian Church in Bethany, Missouri.

Following their move to Stringtown, they ran the Stringtown Store from 1943 to 1947. The they moved to the Grace Roberts farm (Harold's aunt) which is where Ruth continued to live until she entered the Lenox Care Center in March 1993.

Ruth was member of the Stringtown Church and the Ladies Aid. She was a faithful blood donor to the Red Cross blood drive.

Ruth worked for a short time at the Stringtown Cafe.

Ruth died December 8, 1995 at the Lenox Care Center at the age of 87 years, 11 months, and 8 days.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Harold in 1958; daughter Naomi Jean in infancy; son Gary in 1977; brothers; Lyle Hargis, Keith Hargis, and Muriel Hargis; sister; Marie Wilcox, Veralena Coulter, and Dorothy Brown.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law Betty Jean Smith of Lenox; grandchildren Jace Smith and his wife Mona of Colorado, Kimberly Dingeman and her husband Doug of Ankeny, Brenda Robison and her husband Tracy of Prescott, and Blase Smith of Maryville, Mo; Great grandchildren Adam and Aaron Smith of Colorado, Garrett and Brandon Robison of Prescott and Mitchel Dingeman of Ankeny; a brother Darrell Hargis and wife Jerri of Shenandoah; a sister-in-law Thelma Hargis of Clarinda; a brother-in-law Jesse Smith and wife Grace of Oswego, Kansas; several nieces and nephews as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec 11 at 1:00 pm at the Stringtown Church with Revs Roy Cook and Elmer West officiating. Open visitation was held Sunday at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox. Serving as pallbearers were Blase Smith, Doug Dingeman, Tracy Robison, Dale Shepherd and Edwin Ramsey. Erma Fuller provided music.

Snodgrass, Adolphus

Adolphus E. Snodgrass, son of J. T. and Nancy Ann Snodgrass, was born in Mahaska county, Iowa, on April 17, 1860, and departed this life at his home near New Market on Dec 2, 1940. He moved to Taylor county with his parents at the age of five and made his home in this immediate community the remainder of his life.

He was married to Melvina Hembree on Feb 28, 1889, to which union one son was given.

Immediate members of the family left to mourn his departure are his son, Roy C. Snodgrass of New Market; one brother, Oscar Snodgrass of Hiawatha, Kans, and two sisters, Mrs Thelia Prickett of Oklahoma City, Okla, and Mrs Ora Millhon of Denver, Colo.

Snodgrass, Melvin "Vina" Hembree

Melvina Hembree, daughter of W.D. and Margery Hembree, was born near New Market, Taylor county, Iowa, March 23, 1869, and passed away at her home southeast of New Market Wednesday, Oct 27, 1937, aged 68 years, 7 months and 4 days.

She was united in marriage to Adolphus E. Snodgrass in March, 1889.To this union was born one son, Roy C. Snodgrass, who is still living at home.

At about the age of 15 years she united with the Baptist church at New Market, later transferring her membership to the Church of Christ, and was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand as long as her health permitted.

Besides her husband and son she leaves to mourn her departure three sisters and one brother, Rosa Bell Hutchison of New Market, Martha J. Farlow of Siam, Mary A. Lindsey of Lebanon, Ore, and Franklin Hembree of Omaha, Nebr. Her father, mother, one sister, Zonie May, and one brother, David Tillman, have preceded her in death.

She spent her entire life in and near New Market, moving to her present home in 1924. She was a patient sufferer in her last illness for over two years, always having a smile for everyone. She will be greatly missed by her family and a host of relatives and friends.

Sollars, Phebe Ellen Mead - Phebe Ellen Mead, second child of Mary Adaline and Harry Jackson Mead, was born in Muscatine, Iowa, December 20, 1868. At the age of 6 years she moved with her parents to Leon, Iowa, and a year later they moved to Clarinda, where she grew to womanhood. At the age of 14 years she united with the Methodist church and later transferred her membership to the Baptist church where she was a faithful worker until her health failed. She taught school 22 years in Page and Taylor counties. In 1918 she was united in marriage to William Hembree, who passed away in 1922. In 1928 she was married to J.E. Sollars, who, together with her father, mother, two sisters, Mrs Nellie McNutt and Mrs Cora Hazelton and one brother, George Mead, have preceded her in death. She had been in failing health for several months and quietly died on Wednesday evening, Jan 21, 1948, at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 1 day. She leaves a brother, Rev Fred A. Thurman, George A. - George A. Thurman, 91, died Wednesday morning at a Clearmont, Mo rest home where he had been a resident for several years. His home had been at Bolckow, Mo, before coming to the rest home.

He was born March 20, 1884, near Blockton, the son of Francis and Mary McCalla Thurman. He was married to Ina Wilma Burdick, who died in 1938. Later he was married to Bessie Squires, who died in 1957.

Funeral services for Mr Thurman will be at 2 pm Saturday at Walker Funeral Home with Loren Daly of New Market officiating. Carolyn Hughes will be soloist and Grace Perry organist. Burial will be in Clarinda cemetery.

Thurman, Glen - Glen Thurman, 81, of Kansas City, Ks, died March 16 at the Bethany Medical Center in Kansas City, Ks. He was born in Farragut, and lived in Kansas City since 1942. He worked as a lathe operator for the Fairbank-Morris Pump Division for 20 years and retired in 1973. He was a member of the Central Christian Church in Kansas City, Ks and USWA Local 4991.

Survivors are his wife, Mabel V. Thurman of the home, two sons, Leo P. Thurman of Overland Park, Ks, and Robert D. Thurman of Dallas, Tx; one daughter, Darlene Buszzard of Kansas City, Ks; four brothers, Garold T. of Arroyo Grande, Ca, Melvin of New Market, Raymond of Clarinda and Merle of Gould City, Mi; six grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 am Saturday in the Porter Funeral Home Chapel in Kansas City, Ks, with graveside services at the Clarinda Cemetery at 1:30 pm.
