Arbuckle, Mary Bryson - In the death of Mrs Mary Arbuckle another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of our old settlers and a lonely home is left to attest how sadly she will be missed. She was an old lady of generous impulses and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. How much this community owes to her and such as she it is impossible to estimate. In her various characters of wife, mother, neighbor and friend she lived nobly and reared an estimable family to emulate her virtues.

Mary Bryson was born at Strathaven, Scotland, March 9, 1882, and died at her home in Villisca Sunday, May 15, 1910, aged 88 years, 2 months and 6 days. She was married to James Arbuckle June 20, 1845, and to this union were born eleven children, five of whom are left to mourn the loss of a sainted mother. They are: Rev J.C. Arbuckle of Columbus, Ohio; Mrs J.S. Kendrick, six miles north of Villisca; Mrs C. H. Wise, five and one-half miles southeast of Villisca, and W.B. Arbuckle and Eva of this city. She leaves also three sisters: Mrs Janette Hamilton of Bedford, Iowa; Mrs Margaret West of Tempe, Arizona; and Mrs Elizabeth Burnside of this city and a host of friends and relatives who with the family mourn the loss of one who spent her life in service for others.

After her marriage Mrs Arbuckle and her husband made their home in Glasgow, Scotland, for five years, sailing from that city for America August 23, 1850, they being the first of either family to leave for the new world. They landed at New York, October 2, 1850, being six weeks on the water. During the voyage across the infant son died and they buried him in the bosom of the broad Atlantic. They came first to Kanawa county, West Virginia, making their home there for over a year when they moved to Highland county, Ohio. In the fall of 1858 they, with six other families, came from Ohio to Iowa, making the journey with wagons. In 1860 they settled on the old farm in Page county, five and one-half miles southeast of Villisca, where they resided until the spring of 1889 when they moved to the home one mile east of town. Here the husband and father died in November 1893. The next spring Mrs Arbuckle with her family came to Villisca where she has since resided.

In early life she became a christian, uniting first with the Presbyterian church in Scotland and after coming to Iowa she united with the Christian church of which she was a faithful and devoted member. Her life was one of devotion to her family and she leaves to them the blessed memory of a mother's love and devotion. She never thought of herself but spent her life in service for others and was ever ready to help those in sickness or distress.

The funeral services were held from the Christian church in this city Tuesday afternoon at half past one o'clock, Rev J.K. Driver of the Presbyterian church and Rev Enoch Hill of the Methodist church officiating. Interment was made in the North Grove cemetery eight miles southeast of Villisca. Burnside, George - Ripe with the honors which come of a life of integrity and devoted to the upbuilding and betterment of the community in which it was passed, George Burnside suddenly passed to the rest eternal last Thursday afternoon at about two o'clock. Yes, death's call was sudden and it took from the family a loving husband and father, from the friends and community a loyal and highly esteemed citizen.

Mr Burnside was down on the streets Thursday afternoon and started home from the store of J.S. Banes at about half-past one o'clock. When in front of I.S. Keys' buggy room he was taken sick and leaned up against the building. Just then Cyrus Frame came along and asked the old gentleman what the trouble was and received the reply, "I am awful sick." Mr Keys then assisted the helpless man into the store while Mr Frame went after a doctor. Mr Burnside sank to the floor soon after entering the store and was carried to the rear of the building and laid on one of the counters near the stove, where he died within fifteen minutes in spite of all that the doctor and willing hands could do.

The remains of him, who but a few minutes before had left the happy home in the best of health, were taken to the residence and a sad scene was that when the wife, heart-broken by the terrible news, looked upon the cold and lifeless body of her loving companion.

The funeral services were held from the M.E. church Saturday forenoon, conducted by Rev Dudley, and the remains were interred at the North Grove cemetery.

Deceased was born in Scotland March 8, 1833, was married to Elizabeth Bryson December 13, 1855, they moved from Scotland to Page county, Iowa, in 1868 and to Villisca in 1899. To Mr and Mrs Burnside were born ten children, six of whom are left to cheer their mother in her old age. Mr Burnside was raised a Christian and he remained as such until the end. He was a grand old man and those who sympathize with the bereaved family are many. VILLISCA REVIEW, Villisca, Iowa, Dec 18, 1901

Moffitt, George Wesley - George Wesley Moffitt, was born in Page County, Iowa, on March 22nd, 1963. He died June 21, 1953 at Hastings, Nebr.

At the age of twenty-two years he united with the Church of Christ at Villisca, Iowa.

On May 17th, 1926, he was married to Elizabeth Force at Cotter, Ark.

All who knew him understood his chosen vocation was of deep importance to him. He loved his Bible and his family.

While George Moffitt was living, he wrote the following requests:

"When my time comes to pass from this world to the Great Beyond, I don't want my family and friends to go into mourning for me, for grief, like patriotism, is in the heart and not outside. I ask that a minimum be spent on my funeral, no fine coffin. If a minister, I request him to say I lived according to my sights, and while no respecter of quarrelsome religions, I had a profound love of the Creator.

"If anyone ask what sort of a man I was, tell him that I thought more of human happiness than of riches; that I loved those dear to me and thought of them often; that I honored my friends and loved them; that I never wilfully wronged a single human being, whether friend or enemy; and that I died with a clear conscience. Finally, remember me as tenderly as you wish, but live your own lives in your own way, defend what is your own, but take nothing that is not yours. Stand up for what you believe to be right, but do no wrong to any one. Do these things and in the end you will face death fearlessly as I do.

"My wishes as to funeral arrangements: The IOOF Bertrand Lodge, of which I am a member, will have charge in full, if convenient for them to do so. Interment should be where Lizzie, my wife, selects."

He leaves to mourn, his wife, Elizabeth; his son Paul, an adopted son, George Moffitt, of Sterling, Colorado; two step daughters, Mrs Louis Danneld of Bertrand and Kathryn Walgamott of Curtis; grandchildren, one great grandchild and many friends.

Truedson, Axel - Axel Truedson, who has been employed by O.A. Anderson, on the Niles farm for about three years past, until Monday, when he quit, suicided by shooting himself in the head, about 10 am Tuesday.

He has never been considered a man of strong intellect and has always been subject to fits of despondency and it was during one of these he took his life. No other reason is known for the act. He went over to the Delaneys that morning and asked for a pipe of tobacco which was given him and he went away. Soon after a shot was heard and one of the boys later, found him dead with a revolver lying near.

He is a Swede, unmarried, and aged about 35 years. In a note left he gave no special reason for suicide, but said good bye to his friends, and intimated that drink was the principal cause of his troubles.

We are told his mother is still living in Sweden and that he has considerable property there. His only relative in this country is a cousin living at Galesburg, Ills. He was buried in the Beavers cemetery yesterday. VILLISCA REVIEW, Villisca, Iowa, May 14, 1891
