Alexander, Leslie Guy - Leslie G. Alexander, son of James S. and Rosabelle (McAlpin) Alexander, was born in Taylor County, Ia, Sept 21, 1889, and passed away following a long illness at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda, July 26, 1957.

In 1909 Mr Alexander was married to Rosa Bullock. To this union was born one daughter, Ruth Good of Painesville, Ohio, who survives her father. On Nov 1, 1945, he was united in marriage with Hazel Weaver of Coin, Ia, who also survives him.

Mr Alexander was the youngest of a family of three children, all of whom, together with the parents, preceded him in death. He received his education in the Bedford schools and was a resident of Taylor and Page Counties the greater part of his life.

At an early age Mr Alexander found it necessary to earn his own livelihood. It was natural that his interest should turn to lumber and woodworking as his father was a skilled cabinet maker. Although he was engaged in other work during his youth, it was in the lumber business that he spent the fruitful years of his life. For many years he was connected with this business in New Market, Ia, coming to Coin in February, 1932, where he continued with the Coin Lumber and Grain Company until his death.

Mr Alexander was interested in conservation and held membership in the Izaak Walton League. He took a very active interest in the affairs of the New Market Public Schools, where his daughter was a pupil, and served on the Board of Education for several years.

Through the years Mr Alexander developed his natural gift for woodworking into a hobby. He fitted up a workshop in his home where, as long as his health permitted, he and his wife spent many satisfying hours making handsome pieces of furniture for their home and for friends.

A product of this workshop which brought much pleasure through many holiday seasons, not only to the people of Coin but to the entire county, was a beautifully fashioned Christmas scene mounted on the roof of the lumber building. The illuminated, life-size figure of St Nicholas in his sled, drawn by animated reindeer, delighted both children and adults.

Mr Alexander had been in failing health for some time and confined to his home for more than a year. CLARINDA HERALD JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, Aug 5, 1957

Chase, Albert Gilbert - Albert Gilbert Chase, son of Mr. Abel and Mrs Polly Chase, was born Sept 19, 1832, in Clermont county, O. He died at his home in Hepburn, Ia., May 16, 1914. Had he lived until Sept 19 of the present year he would have been 82 years of age. He was the last of a family of five children, three girls and two boys. His last illness was of two years duration and during the last year he suffered much, but uncomplainingly. At the age of 12 years he, with his father, settled near Abbington, Ill, where he resided until 1858, when he, with two companions, William and Silas Chase, came to Valley township, Page county, Ia, traveling from Burlington to the end of their long journey on foot. The young man, Albert, settled on a farm a short distance east of Hepburn. In 1859 he took unto him a wife in the person of Miss Eliza Drace. To this union were born five children, of whom three survive their father, viz: Mrs Emma Sumner of Hepburn, who lived with her father and cared for him during his last illness; Mrs Clara Burton, Clarinda, and Mrs W.C. Harned, Casper, Wyo. Two other children, Frances, who died in early childhood, and Mrs Annie Taylor, who died about two years ago, complete the list. In 1875 Mrs Chase, the mother, died. The oldest daughter now Mrs Summer, was but 14 years of age, but the father never remarried. Still he kept his family together until they were all married.

During the War of the Rebellion Mr Chase enlisted in Company K, Thirteenth Iowa infantry, and made the trip with his regiment to Goldsboro, NC, and marched in grand review with Sherman's army at Washington, D.C.

For a period of more than thirty years previous to his death he was a citizen of Hepburn, and at times was a member of the town council, street commissioner and served at least one term as mayor. Comrade Chase belonged to that class of western pioneers which, a few years since were quite common, but of which but few now remain. They were of a hardy stock, stalwart physically, inured to the hardships of the last century, accustomed to undergo great privations, and possessing great vitality. Comrade Chase was fond of field sports and thoroughly understood the habits of the various animals, birds, or fish which are to be found in all of our western woods, streams, or prairies. Twas an exceedingly wary furbearing animal that could steer clear of his trap, and an exceedingly shy fish that would not nibble at his hook. But he loved to read, too, so he had a well informed mind. But the indulgent parents, the genial neighbor, has been gathered to his fathers, and we can spend no more social seasons with him and listen to his quaint stories and tales of the pioneer days, and enjoy his keen repartee.

The last sad rites over the remains of our departed friend and neighbor were conducted by Rev J.W. Gibson of the United Presbyterian church, at the family home at 10 am, of Monday, May 18. The remains were laid to rest in the Fairview cemetery. CLARINDA JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, May 21, 1914

Hastie, Elizabeth - Mrs Elizabeth Hastie, a former resident of Hepburn, familiarly known as "Grandma" Hastie died at her home in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, May 9, 1907, of paralysis. She was seventy years old.

Mrs Hastie, who lived in Hepburn perhaps twenty years, was widely known and greatly respected by the residents of that vicinity. About twelve years ago she moved with her husband to Arkansas, where the latter died some eight years afterwards. She has five children living, three of whom, Mrs Miller, Mrs Cochrane and Mrs Neely, were with her during her last sickness. Funeral services were held May 11th, and interment was at Siloam Springs by the side of the deceased husband.

Mrs Hastie suffered her first stroke of paralysis last January and it was thought then that death was imminent, but she so far recovered from that attack as to be able to sit up. Her second stroke came about the first of May and from it she died. Besides the three children mentioned, Mrs Hasitie is survived by a son, Phillip, who lives in Oregon, and a daughter, Mrs Elizabeth Grimes, whose home is one mile east of Clarinda[Iowa]. Wm. B. Hastie, who was found dead in a road in Canada last January, was a son. VILLISCA REVIEW, Villisca, Iowa, Jun 6, 1907

Hastie, Wm. B. - The following telegram received by relatives at Hepburn last Friday brought the sad news of the death of a former resident of that vicinity, Mr Wm. B. Hastie: "High River, Canada; Mr Hastie is dead. Accident. Body and family will leave Calgary tonight, the eighteenth, Mr Marquis accompanying."

Mr Hastie had lived in the vicinity of Hepburn all his life until about three years ago when he located in Alberta, Canada. The cause of his death, other than that it was an accident, has not been learned, and owing to the heavy snowstorms in the north, or for some other, unknown, reason, it has been impossible to get through with the body, with the result that keen anxiety is felt among friends and relatives living at Hepburn. Mr Hastie is well known to many Villisca people. He has a sister Mrs Elizabeth Grimes, living east of Clarinda, and his wife is a sister of T.A. Dyke of this vicinity and a cousin of Mrs I.N. Dirrim of Hepburn. Surviving him are a wife and eight-year-old daughter. He carried insurance for $1000, in favor of his wife, in the Yeomen of this city. VILLISCA REVIEW, Villisca, Iowa, Jan 24, 1907

The body of Wm. B. Hastie, whose death by accident occurred in Canada a fortnight ago mention of which was made in these columns last week, was shipped to Hepburn by way of Winnipeg and arrived at its destination, accompanied by Mrs Hastie and little daughter Say and Clem Marquis, last Thursday. Funeral services were held by Rev Munsford of the U.P. church last Friday afternoon at one o'clock, and interment was made in the Fairview cemetery. Mr Hastie, whose home was about twelve miles from High River, Alberta, had been in town driving a team of two horses and two mules and had started to make the return trip. As the day wore off and night came on, his wife, who had remained at home, began to feel uneasy and about midnight started toward High River in search of him. About a mile from home she found the horses but no driver. A little farther on, and she was horrified to find the body of her husband lying in the road, frozen almost stiff. Life had been extinct for several hours. An examination of the body revealed no marks of violence, but inspection of the wagon and the team disclosed a broken tug, and the supposition is that Mr Hastie had descended from the vehicle to repair the damaged strap and had received a kick from one of the mules which proved fatal. The delay in getting the body through to Hepburn was due to the heavy snow storms which had bound up trains and kept them out of St Paul and Minneapolis for nearly three days. Slack, Wm - Wm Slack, who left here with his wife about four weeks ago for a visit with his daughter, Mrs John Nelson, in Cambridge, Illinois, died at that place yesterday morning at half past eight o'clock of pneumonia after an illness lasting but a few days. He was in his seventy-first year. His body arrived in Villisca this morning and funeral services will be held at the Fairview church five miles south of town tomorrow afternoon, interment to be made in the cemetery there.

While the serious illness of Mr Slack had been made known by telegraph to relatives here, nevertheless, the news of his death yesterday was quite a shock, not only to them but to everybody in the vicinity who heard it.

Mr Slack was one of the early settlers in this locality, coming here from Henry county, Illinois, in 1873. He was born in King county, Ireland, in 1837 but at the age of twenty with his parents emigrated to America, and during his long life proved himself a good American and a valuable citizen. When he came to Iowa his parents settled on a farm three and one-half miles south of Villisca, where the son continued to reside after their demise. He was an energetic, hard working farmer and a man highly respected in the community. Nothing ever said, derogatory to his character, can be recalled at this time, and his death will be regretted and his departure mourned by more than the members of his immediate family. Surviving him are a wife and three daughters, the latter being Mrs Robert Higgins of this place, Mrs John Nelson of Cambridge, Illinois, and Mrs A.H. Nelson of Kearney, Nebraska. He also has living a sister, Mrs Ellen Atkinson, of Villisca, and two brothers, Henry of this place and Caleb of Chillicothe, Missouri, besides thirteen grandchildren and innumerable other relatives both in this vicinity and elsewhere. In their bereavement they may be consoled with the thought that everywhere in the community goes out to them deep sympathy and a willingness to share their sorrow.
