New Market (Special)--John Adams, 18, was instantly killed at the Fred Johnson coal mine, east of here along highway No. 3, when he fell from the "bucket" in which he was riding from the bottom of the shaft late Wednesday afternoon.
He had complained on not feeling well, having a headache and sick at his stomach. Fred Johnson, his employer who was working below in the new mine with Adams, had told him to go up where he could get better air. The machinery had pulled the bucket about half way up when the boy must have become faint, falling fifty feet to his death.
It is possible, Arnold Johnson, who was at the top, and Fred Johnson believe, that he was dead before he struck the bottom. His body was badly crushed by the impact with the hard floor and no life remained in his body. A doctor was called from New Market at once, but there was no doubt about the uselessness of trying to revive any spark of life.
Adams, know about New Market a "John Quincy," had worked with Johnson in sinking the new shaft. He had learned the miner trade during recent years, having discontinued his schooling in the New Market schools before he was eligible for high school.
His father, Bert Adams, lies in a critical condition at Iowa City where he was taken last week for an emergency appendix operation. His mother, 3 brothers and sisters are at the farm home north of New Market.
The boy's funeral will be held Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the Christian church in New Market. CLARINDA JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, Jul 28, 1932

Anderson, Ida Caroline Erricson - Fremont Twp--Obituary--Ida Caroline Erricson was born in Sweden in 1861, immigrated to this country in 1880. Married A.C. Anderson in 1881, died at her home in Fremont township near Mission Ridge Thursday, March 29th, 1900. Mrs Anderson suffered from heart trouble the last few years, but her sudden departure was sorely unexpected. Her absence will be painfully felt by a surviving husband and seven children, (One boy having gone before), two sisters and two brothers; two of which attended the funeral, namely John Ericson and Mrs Swanson both of Wakefield, Nebraska. The obsequies were had at the Mission church, Sunday afternoon, when a large number of sympathizing friends wished to take a final glance of their friend. The remains were sepultured in the Nyman cemetery. The separation is painful, but there is consolation in the assurance of the departed mother and wife, as well as a brother and son are safe at Home, at which the mourning ones may not wonder in dismay, "Will anyone there at that beautiful gate, be waiting and watching for me?" Day, in the northwest corner of Valley township, Page county. Mr Bagley was a carpenter by occupation and was engaged in rebuilding the house of Mr Day. He was taken ill Friday noon and the next morning thought of going to Villisca with Mr Day, to consult a physician, but when Mr Day was ready to drive to town, said he was unable to go. Mr Day made the trip to Villisca hurriedly and returned with Dr Jackson, who, although finding Mr Bagley sitting up said he could do nothing for him, and that his time was short. The illness, the doctor reported, resembled cholera infantum more than anything else. Death came at 2 pm. The deceased was 53 years and 14 days old, was a native of Canada, and had a residence of from 16 to 20 years in Page county, having resided in Douglas and Valley townships. Bean, John - John Burnett Bean, son of William and Elizabeth Bean, was born near Hopkins, Mo, May 15, 1876, and departed this life at his home in New Market on Jan 29, 1938, at the age of 61 years, 8 months and 14 days.
When he was a small boy, his family moved to this community where he spent his entire life.
In the year of 1895 he was united in marriage to Lucy Adams. To this union was born nine children, three of whom have preceded him in death, John, Evelyn, and Elizabeth.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, and daughter Marie at home, daughters, Mrs Clara O'Dell and family of Bedford, Mrs Art Templeton and family of Falls City, Nebr; sons, Earl and Dan and families of New Market and Hobart of Utah; three brothers, three sisters, fifteen grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr Bean operated a coal mine east of town for the past twenty years. He was always loyal and generous to those who worked with him, and he never refused a stranger food or a night's lodging.
He seem to know that but once we pass this way and then the silent door swings on its hinges, opens, closes and no more one passes this way, so while he could he gave to his family, neighbors and friends sympathy in their sorrow and help in their needs. The roads were never too bad or the weather too cold for him to give assistance where it was needed. He will truly be missed from this community. So let us think of his death as being God's mercy, strange, uncomprehended, the undiscovered goal, the land of promise when the toil is ended, the day dawn of the soul

Brown, Anna E. Jones-
Died--Near Villisca, in Adams county, on the 11th, ult., Mrs Annie E. Brown, wife of Mr J.P. Brown, in the 21st year of her age.
More than four years ago, the deceased connected herself with the Presbyterian church of Clarinda, and was recently dismissed to join herself with others in forming a new organization near her new home. But God's ways are often different from ours. In His all wise providence He has taken her, we doubt not, from the church militant to the church triumphant.
A sorrowing husband, an aged mother, a loving sister and brother, together with numerous friends, mourn her loss. "And I heard a voice from Heaven, saying unto me, 'write, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.'" PAGE COUNTY DEMOCRAT, Clarinda, Iowa, Mar 5, 1870

Hadden, Melinda McMillon - Again we are called upon to record the death of one of the early settlers of this locality, namely that of Mrs Melinda Hadden, better known as Grandma Hadden. This lady was one of the first white persons to locate in Page County. She came here in the noonday of the past century and for 52 years had dwelt in the homestead in which she died. Twenty years before the railroad was built, while yet this was a barren wilderness she came to this county. The hardships and dangers of pioneer life surrounded her. A few years after her arrival the husband and father was called away and laid to rest on the hillside a few hundred feet from the desolute home. Thus she was called upon to journey along, lonely and sad, with no one to support and comfort her. No doubt a feeling of sadness often crept over her as she sat by the fireside listening to the moaning of the night winds or the cries of the wild beasts that haunted the woods and prairie. The years rolled by and the children grew to maturity. As she gazed at the landscape she could also behold a wonderful transformation as the plains became fertile fields, while here and there appeared cottages, school houses, churches and villages. The children were scattered about and only one is now a resident of this county, namely Edward Hadden with whom she has made her home.
The deceaed, whose maiden name was Melinda McMillon, was born the 25th day of January 1812 in the state of Tennessee. From there she went with her parents to Indiana and remained with them until 1832, when she was married to John Hadden. After residing in the same state 8 years, they removed to Arkansas, with their family, and made their home there until about the year 1850, when they came to this state, this county, and to this old homestead, where she spent the remainder of her days, her death occuring Sept 12th, 1902.
To John and Melinda Hadden were born 10 children, 8 of whom are still living. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 pm. Dr Phelps preached the discourse and the Presbyterian quartette furnished the music. A large number of people attended the obsequies and followed the remains to the quaint little cemetery where all that is mortal of Grandma Hadden is now resing by the side of her husband, who preceded her 48 years ago. Kenigsberg, Joseph - Our people were shocked yesterday morning when the sad news was learned that Joseph Kenigsberg, the senior member of the Model clothing firm, had died at his home on Thomas avenue about 5 o'clock.
Death was caused by rheumatism from which he had suffered many years, suddenly attacking s heart. During the night he had suffered quite severely and about 4 o'clock became much worse and his wife attempted to alleviate the pain but could not and finally summoned a physician who administered several hypodermic injections but it was of no avail and after a few faint flutters his heart ceased beating and he was dead.
The news of his death came as a greater surprise as he was down town Wednesday attending to business and seemed as well as usual. Since his return from Burlington Junctions, a short time ago, he seemed to be improving somewhat, although while there he suffered a sort of paralytic stroke but from which he was recovering. He had been a sufferer from rheumatism for many years and had tried treatments at various places hoping to be benefitted but it was not thought that the disease was dangerous and that in so short a time he would be taken from his wife and friends.
He was born at Obbach, Bavaria, in December, 1842, and when he was 25 years of age he came to New Yoark. From there he went to Cincinnatti, where he clerked in a clothing store. About 14 years ago he went to Hiawatha, Kas., and entered into partnership with his brother, Jacob, in the clothing business. After being there 10 years they moved to this city four years ago and established the Model clothing store. He and Mrs Kenigsberg were united in marriage at Springfield, Ill., nearly 20 years ago. Besides his wife, he leaves his brother Jacob and a sister at Cincinnati to mourn his loss. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. ad A.O.U.W. lodges, carrying $2,000 life insurance in the latter. Since coming to this city he has gained many friends, the ones who knew him best, holding him in the highest esteem. His sudden taking away arouses the sympathy of all our people, who extend to the bereaved wife and brother their deepest sympathies.
The funeral services will be held at the residence tomorrow morning at 9:30 o'clock, conducted by the I.O.O.F. and A.O.U.W. lodges. Interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery. THE SHENANDOAH WORLD, Shenandoah, Iowa, Jun 6, 1902

Simmons, John W. was born in Giles Co., Virginia, July 3, 1830, where he grew to manhood. He moved with his father's family to Virginia City, Cass Co., Illinois in 1852. Soon after coming to Illinois he was married to Susannah Carper. To this union ten children were born, seven of whom are still living. Removed from Illinois to Cass Co., Nebraska, in 1863; from Nebraska to Barton Co., Missouri in 1866; from Missouri to his late home in Page Co., Iowa in the fall of 1874 where he lived until about 9 am March 1st, when he quietly passed away being conscious until the last. During his sickness he told some of his friends that he was ready for the great change which awaited him and to his daughter he said that he hoped soon to join her mother who had preceeded him by a little more than three years. He was a man who had no enemies, who would always be found at the bedside of a sick neighbor and was always ready to lend a helping hand where help was needed. One who will be greatly missed in the neighborhood. His death was a shock to the community as it came at a time when he appeared to be getting better. Nervous prostration with a complication of other diseases was the cause. In his death the community looses a good citizen and the family a loving father. Funeral services were held at the Pleasant Hill church Thursday at one o'clock pm conducted by Rev Kelley, of Essex. All of the children were present but one. The family has the sympathy of the entire community. ESSEX INDEPENDENT, Essex, Iowa, Mar 4, 1904
