Mellencamp, Rae Ann Heumphreus - Rae Ann Mellencamp, 73, of Clarinda, Iowa entered into peace Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Bergan Mercy Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 15, 2020 at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Pastor Daryl Tompkins officiating. Open visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Interment will be held at the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa.
Rae Ann Heumphreus, 73, was born April 7, 1947 in Clarinda, Iowa, the only child of Ann (Wilburn) and Ray Heumphreus. Her mother taught her to run a “tight ship” at work and in the home, and to take pride in her accomplishments. She was the gleam in her father’s eyes and from whom she learned that everything in life is better when approached with a sense of humor.
Rae Ann had a strong work ethic and spent even more tireless hours caring for her family. Rae Ann graduated from Clarinda High School in 1965 and always remembered her classmates as a close and fun loving group of people.
She met the love of her life, Darrell Mellencamp, by walking up to him at the Cardinal Canteen one evening and asking him to marry her. Thank goodness he was the kind of young man to always do as he was told. He told her, he would “think about it” and three years later the two were married on Sunday, January 15, 1967, the same day as the first super bowl between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. They both delighted in the story of a fellow church member and wedding guest jokingly complaining that he wouldn’t be missing the game if he hadn’t had to come to their wedding. This week has been full of stories of Rae Ann, told with fond and joyful memories their life together has brought to so many people.
Rae Ann felt her most important work in life was to be a wife and mother and she did both with perfection. She loved staying at home with her children until they went to school, teaching them the meaning of family, love and togetherness, sticking by your spouse, as much in bad times as in good, and that a home built with God as it’s foundation, though at times it may shift, shall never fall.
Rae Ann joined the workforce at an early age after college in Clarinda. Some of her favorite jobs included working for Bill Jennings at Jennings Service Station, Keith Stickleman at Clarinda Hardware and she was with Lisle Corporation for twenty seven years before retiring. She went back to retail part-time, after retiring, at Easter’s True Value for a short time before she decided to spend all her time with her husband and their dog, Sadie, doing volunteer work and prayer chain for her church, having coffee with friends and enjoying her eight grandchildren. Rae Ann in her life was a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, school room mother and mother to many of her children’s friends, Cub Scout and 4-H leader, league bowler and Legion Auxiliary member.
She went home to her Heavenly Father on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 9:10 a.m. at CHI Bergan Mercy in Omaha, Nebraska surrounded by her husband and children.
Rae Ann was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Lucille Mellencamp; son, Jason Darrell Mellencamp; father-in-law, Warren Mellencamp; parents, Ray and Ann Heumphreus; mother-in-law, Margaret Kirkland and daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Saville) Mellencamp.
Survived by husband, Darrell Mellencamp; daughter, Shelly Mellencamp; son, Scott Mellencamp and wife Micaela (Sunderman); grandchildren, Bailey Bloss and husband Dalton, Will Mellencamp, Jason Dow, Jacob Dow and fiancé Faith Adkins, Jana Dow, Lane Mellencamp; Decker Mellencamp and Denton Mellencamp; great granddaughter, Bailea Bloss; nieces; nephews and many friends.
Rae Ann was a loyal daughter, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by all.
