Bredensteiner, Steven George -

Steven George Bredensteiner was born December 30, 1947 to George Henry Bredensteiner and Blanche Jerrine (Jerry) Spratt at Hand Community Hospital in Shenandoah, Iowa.  Steve passed away at home June 17, 2020.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Monday, June 22, 2020 at 10:00 am at St. Paul's Cemetery, rural Northboro, with Pastor Kurt Hoover and Shana Bredensteiner giving words of comfort.  There will be visitation and viewing with the family present on Sunday afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Nishna Valley Funeral Home.  Memorials in Steve's name are being directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or to the St. Paul's Cemetery Fund.

His early years were spent in Shenandoah, Iowa, until the family moved back to the family farm in rural Northboro during his 3rd grade year.  He attended Hillsdale Country School for 6 weeks at which time the school closed, and he was sent to Northboro schools for the remainder of his elementary years.  During 7th grade, it was determined the home was not zoned to Northboro’s School District, rather to Shenandoah Community School District, but later that year, the zoning was decided to be Farragut School District – while the home never actually moved.

Steve graduated from Farragut Community High School in 1966 and attended Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska where he met William “Woody” Woodward who remains a dear friend to this day.  Steve finished his university degree at Northwest Missouri State College with a Bachelor of Arts in American History, English and Education.

Before they were even able to sit up, Steve met Penny Sue Hamilton, as his parents and her grandparents were good friends.  Penny succumbed to his charms sometime between 7th grade and college, and they were married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, Iowa on the blistering hot day of August 10, 1969.  Steve and Penny made their home in Tarkio, Missouri prior to moving to Farragut in 1971 where they welcomed their first child, Charlynn Sue Bredensteiner (Marshall).

Steve began working for Central Surveys and was able to see a vast majority of the country through his travels for work.  However, to be home more frequently he switched gears to the automotive industry after his second daughter, Shana Kristine Bredensteiner (Schlabach) was born in 1974 and their youngest, Stephanie Alise Bredensteiner (Snyder) arrived in 1978.  He then worked as parts manager and accountant at Fred Short Ford for several years until they closed; at which point, Steve became more involved in farming the homestead and began substitute teaching.  This is where he found his true passion.

Over the course of the next 25 years, he became known as Mr. B throughout the many school districts of Southwest Iowa where he impacted countless lives.  He truly loved teaching his passions of AP US History and Shakespeare and taking several students from those classes to Washington, D.C. because there is no better lesson than to learn up close and in person.  He instilled in so many the drive to learn, explore, investigate and discuss countless topics as he continued to always do those things during his life.

In 1992, the family participated in the American Foreign Exchange Student program and gained our bonus daughter, Clara Giusti of Florence, Italy, which ignited Steve’s passion for international travel.  He was so thankful to be fortunate enough to visit her and her Italian family multiple times including attending her Tuscan wedding in 2017 and meeting his bonus son-in-law Andrea and bonus grandson, Lorenzo.

His passions outside of academia included hunting, fishing, especially if his grandkids caught the biggest fish (even if help was necessary), woodworking and creating the beautiful pieces he shared with countless friends and family members, and ever so diligently tending his yard with the most interesting and beautiful flora he could find.  But nothing matched his passion and genuine love for his family and especially his beloved wife and life partner of more than 50 years, daughters, bonus daughter, sons-in-law, and his beautiful grandchildren who meant everything to him.

Steven is preceded in death by his parents George and Jerry, his parents-in-law Boyd Jr. and Lulu Belle Hamilton, his son-in-law Mahlon Marshall, and his half-brother James Bredensteiner.

He is survived by his wife, Penny; daughters Charlynn of Kansas City, Missouri, Shana (husband Andrew Schlabach) of Bedford, Texas, and Alise (husband Shannon Snyder) of rural Sidney, Iowa; grand-children Wyatt and Colten Marshall, Axton, Maddox and Quincy Schlabach, Shaye and Sloane Snyder; his in-laws Mel and Jo (Hamilton) Eyberg of St. Joseph, Missouri and Mike and Carole Hamilton of rural Farragut, Iowa and nieces and nephews

Huttig, Donald - Donald Huttig, 75, of Clarinda, Iowa entered into eternal peace Monday, May 25, 2020, Memorial Day at his family home after several years of battling cancer caused by exposure to Agent Orange during his service in Vietnam. He was surrounded by his wife, children and several grandchildren at the time of his death. The family had been providing his hospice care for several weeks to ensure Don’s wishes of passing at home were honored. Open visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2020 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Graveside funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 29, 2020 at the Clarinda Cemetery with Reverend Mike Harvey officiating. Social distancing will be observed. Military rites will be accorded by the Iowa Honor Guard and American Legion Sergy Post 98.

Donald Truxton Huttig was born August 1, 1944 in St. Mary’s Pennsylvania to Elizabeth Jane (Caton) Huttig and Ernest Warren Huttig. Don was raised in Emporium, Pennsylvania for the first eight years of his life. He lost his father when he was only 2. Losing his father at such a young age created a loneliness inside of Don and in later years the song “My Daddy is Only a Picture” by Eddie Arnold resonated with him. As his sister would later say “Who would have thought that lonely little boy would become the best of us all”. As a young child, he enjoyed the candy store in town where he could “buy” candy with buttons-his mother settled the debt with the candy store owner every payday. He also fondly remembered sharing pancakes at the hotel where his grandfather worked on Saturday mornings. In 1952 Don’s mother married Fred Kirchner and the family moved to Library, Pennsylvania.

He served his country in the US Army from 1961-1966. Don served at Camp Holloway, Pleiku, Vietnam from 1965-1966. Our country did not welcome him or his brothers in arms when they returned.

Donald was united in marriage to Alice Darleen Hixson at the Englewood Methodist Church in Englewood, Colorado on June 6, 1964. They shared 55 blessed years together. They lived in Denver, Colorado area for 37 years before moving to Clarinda, Iowa in 2004. Their marriage was blessed with four beautiful children, Denise Marie (1965), David Sean (1968), Deanna Dawn (1970) and Dodie Lynn (1973). They each brought such joy to the man who dreamed of having his own family. He believed that God had answered prayers.

Donald was employed in the plastics industry in Denver, Colorado for over 50 years and is well known for his expertise in the field. In 1995, he opened his own company, Plastic Creations Ltd., specializing in thermoforming, fabrication, CNC routing and assembly. When he semi-retired to Clarinda, Iowa; his son and grandson took over the daily operations of the business. It is currently the only family owned, stand-alone plastic fabrication business in the Denver area.

Don enjoyed golf, fishing, traveling, music, gardening, reading, spending time with friends and family. He enjoyed coaching soccer and served on the local board when his children were young. He coached his team “The Outlaws” to a state championship in Colorado. To this day, they continue to hold him in high regard and still refer to him as “Coach”. We never knew how many would be sleeping on the floor or eating at our table.

Don attended the First Christian Church in Clarinda. He loved his Lord and lived his life as Christ like as he could. He had a great passion to reach out and help anyone in need, especially any Veteran. He never wanted to see a Veteran treated as he was when he returned from the war. He proudly served as a member of the board for the Veteran Golf Tournament and Fund.

Donald’s love for his family, his friends and his community was abundant. He was rendered speechless when the town of Clarinda surprised him with a “Honor Parade” on May 2, 2020. His passing has broken our hearts but we will persevere together just as he would have wanted us to do, we are grateful his pain is ended.

Preceding Don in death were his parents, Ernest Warren Huttig and Elizabeth Jane Kirchner, Fred Kirchner; mother and father in law, Eileen Marie and William Roy Hixson and his brother, Joey Kirchner.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife and soul mate Alice Darleen Huttig; his children, Denise Marie King (Tony King), David Sean Huttig (Jamie Fetterley), Deanna Dawn Leach (Bill Leach) and Dodie Lynn Musgrave (Dave Hayward). Great grandchildren, Emily, James, Gavin, Hannah, Callie, Tristan, Briella, Olivia, Amelia, Braden and Rudie Don (his namesake). McMullen, Gene A. -

Gene A. McMullen, 75, of Shenandoah, entered into eternal rest unexpectedly Wednesday evening, May 6, 2020 at the Emergency Room at Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 2 days.

A celebration of life memorial service for Gene will be held at a later date.  Memorials in Gene's in name are being directed to the Shenandoah Congregational United Church of Christ or to the Shenandoah Ambulance Service.

Gene was born in Hamburg, Iowa on March 4, 1945 to Leslie Bryan and Mamie Lee (Shull) McMullen.  He spent his early years on the family farm north of Shenandoah with his parents and two older brothers, Rex and Jim.  After his father passed away, Gene and his mom moved into Shenandoah.  He attended the Shenandoah Community Schools graduating with the class of 1963.

On June 24, 1965, Gene was united in Marriage to Linda (Whitehill) at the Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah.  Gene and Linda were later blessed with the addition of two daughters, Diane and Sheri.  Gene lived in Shenandoah for the rest of his life.

During high school and early adulthood, Gene worked at the Page Theater and the Iowa Drive In where he met the love of his life, Linda.  How they met is a fun story you can ask Linda about sometime.  He was also a cook at Nishna Valley Café, a route driver for both Borden Dairy and Tyler Brothers Bottling and worked for Farnsworth Trenching before being hired at Eaton Corporation in November 1971.  He retired from Eaton after 30 years of service.  One of his favorite jobs was being a substitute school bus driver for Shenandoah for many years.  Several of the kids affectionately nicknamed him “Mean Gene”.

Gene was a member of Memorial Baptist Church where he helped start the bus ministry.  He loved each of the kids that rode that bus like they were his own and still heard from them from time to time to this day.  During this time, he was a member of the trio The PTL Singers.  They traveled around the area sharing their musical gifts with others, especially nursing homes and other churches.  He was currently a member of the Shenandoah Congregational United Church of Christ.  Everyone knew him as the best pancake flipper on Shrove Tuesday and that he could be found in the back pew on Sunday mornings greeting everyone as they came in with a smile.  He was a member of the Shenandoah Jaycees for many years and more recently served on the Shenandoah Tree Board.  For several years Gene could be found donning a red suit and white beard in the weeks leading up to Christmas to give the big guy some help with the children of Shenandoah.  One of Gene’s greatest contributions in his eyes was becoming an EMT and being a volunteer member of the Shenandoah Ambulance Service for many years.

Gene had several hobbies and special interests over the years.  He played the accordion, especially at Christmas time, to the delight of his family.  He enjoyed camping with family and friends when the girls were younger and researching family genealogy since retiring.  He enjoyed supporting the activities of his grandchildren and many other young people around Shenandoah and was often found in the stands at many Shenandoah activities.  Gene was a gifted mechanic and body man.  Most evenings and weekends he would be in his garage working on someone’s car.  He received many calls often in the middle of the night to go help someone stranded and needing help.  He never hesitated to jump in the pickup and go help.  Gene started helping shoot off the 4th of July fireworks while a member of Jaycees and continued doing this for over 40 years.  He was proud to be able to help provide this for the Shenandoah community.  A lot of hours went into the prep work and execution for the teams of volunteers he put together to make each show possible.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Rex and Jim; a beloved niece, Pat McMullen; mother-in-law, Fairis (Whitehill) Maas; and several very loved and spoiled canine family members.

Left to mourn with memories filling their heart are his wife of almost 55 years, Linda; daughters, Diane (Mike) Wilson of Shenandoah and Sheri (Joe) Wilson of Olathe, Kansas; four cherished grandchildren, Bryan, Beth, Logan and Landry;  niece, Peggy (Bob) Taylor of rural Shenandoah; brother-in-law, Danny (Mary) Whitehill of Farragut; sister-in-law, Vicki Stevens of Farragut; three very special grand dogs, Oreo, Fiona and Meatball; many other relatives (especially some nieces and nephews who had nicknamed him Uncle Bean and Unc); and many friends.

Gene never met a stranger and enjoyed nothing more than being able to give someone a reason to smile.  If you needed something, he would be the first one in line to lend a hand.  Social distancing was a struggle for him because he missed being able to visit with people and give them a hard time.  Although we will miss him greatly, he has left behind more memories than can be measured

Townsend, Jerry Edward -

Jerry Edward Townsend was born December 18, 1935 to Orie and Evelyn Townsend. Jerry grew up in Bedford, Iowa and graduated from Bedford High School. During his senior year, Jerry started what would become his long journey of service.

In 1953, he entered into the United States Navy, serving four years on the USS aircraft carrier Shangri-La, after he had completed his training in San Diego Naval Air Base. The USS Shangri-La was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers that was completed after World War II. Jerry was active working on the deck of the carrier. His job was to be ready to watch for the air crafts that came into land on the carrier as well as aircraft that was ready to take off on the flight deck. Jerry would either make sure that “chalks” which were placed behind the incoming aircrafts so the wheels would not be able to roll due to the carrier’s motion. When air crafts were ready to take off from the flight deck, Jerry would remove the “chalks” from the air crafts. He eventually was called for a second duty which took him to the aircraft tower. That job consisted of relaying messages from the Captain to the crew down on the flight deck. Of the four years Jerry was on the carrier, he did 7 months on active tour as the Korean Conflict was getting serious. Half-way to where they were assigned to go, the carrier was advised all was calming down. Jerry’s next assignment was another alert some months later and they headed out to sea. Eventually, all calmed down. 7 more months on tour to various countries. The last of his tour he was sent to Monterey, CA where he received his honorable discharge completing his 4 years with the Navy.

During these years, Jerry met and fell in love with Annette Castro. Jerry and Annette were married on June 8, 1958 in Galt, CA. Jerry applied for several jobs in California but the job market wasn’t hiring much at that time, so he felt it was time to move on and to bring his wife to Iowa so his family could meet his wife. Due to Jerry’s father’s health, his parents were un-able to attend the wedding. To this union were 5 children: 4 daughters, Adrianne, Jan, Tammy, and Trudy and 1 son Randy. Jerry always thought Annette looked like Annette Funiculi. Their roots were planted in Iowa.

Jerry and Annette’s first home was in Clarinda, Iowa where Jerry found a job at Lyle’s Corp in Clarinda. His job was helping in the freight line. He worked there for 3 months as his dream was to get into Law Enforcement. Jerry was accepted by the Clarinda Police Dept at the beginning of his career. After 1 ½ years on the police department, Jerry applied for the Shenandoah, IA Police Dept for 5 ½ years. Still having the desire to further his dreams,

Jerry applied for the Iowa Highway Patrol (which now goes by Iowa State Patrol). After applying twice, he was hired! His dream came true. His first assignment after he completed his training was at Lamoni, IA. After 1 ½ years in Lamoni, there was an opening in Mount Ayr as Trooper Wayne Peterson was being assigned to Des Moines. In August 1967, Jerry was re-assigned to Mount Ayr, IA. Jerry fulfilled his 25 years with the Iowa State Patrol on May 27, 1990-now retired!

This was the beginning for Jerry. He soon applied for Papetti’s Egg Plant working as security officer. Within 2 years, Jerry applied for the police department in Mount Ayr, working for a year. Jerry transitioned into his next branch of service in the United States Army Reserves. He did his 16 years with the Reserves which included his 4 years in the Navy, giving him 20 years. In June 2013, Jerry applied for the Iowa Southern Trolley and was accepted. This gave Jerry so much enjoyment. His took his work seriously. Jerry enjoyed fishing when he found the time plus watching John Wayne movies. Many may recall his signature vests he wore as his everyday attire. Jerry will be deeply missed by so many.

Young, Steven "Steve" Robert - son of Robert and Marice (Almquist) Young, was born September 26, 1948 at Montgomery Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on April 28, 2020 in Granbury, Texas at the age of 71.
He was a cherished husband, a dedicated father, a man who loved his family with all of his heart. A mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing him.
Steve grew up on the family farm in Essex, Iowa. He attended Essex Community School graduating in 1966. During his school years, he was very active in music and sports. After graduation, he attended the University of Iowa. Prior to graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in September 1968 and served as a Cryptographic Stenographer stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War. He was discharged in January 1971 and began his civilian life in the San Francisco Bay area.
Steve followed his music dreams and became a member of the band “Light My Fire” playing keyboard and guitar. While performing in a variety of bars and clubs throughout the Bay Area he met his wife Toni Fine. They were married on April 28, 1973 in San Jose, California. Shortly after their union, Steve and Toni moved back to Steve’s hometown of Essex, Iowa and he joined his father working on the family farm. In the coming years they were blessed with two daughters, Devon and Mahala.
In the early ‘80s, Steve had the opportunity to create and co-produce a children’s musical bible story series. Steve, Toni and their children moved to Texas to pursue the marketing and distribution of the series. This endeavor was not the success they hoped it would be but Steve was given the opportunity to gain and acquire new skills in the printing industry. It soon became apparent he had found his life’s work. Over the next 20 years, Steve dedicated his time to building and creating one of the most respected printing and manufacturing companies in the United States. During this time, he was a partner in Great Western Industries and finished off his career as CEO of CartamundiUSA.
Steve was an avid golfer, participating in numerous charitable golf tournaments around the United States. In his free time he loved boating with his family, spending almost every weekend for 18 years at Lake Texoma, creating lasting friendships and a lifetime of memories.
