had many interests including crafts, sewing, gardening, canning, quilting, and
raising nine children. She was an amazing seamstress, making clothing for the
entire family as well as clothes for our dolls and Barbies. The children remember
many evenings watching their parents sitting on the front steps. Many evenings
on the farm were spent eating popcorn and apples in the front yard. If we
weren’t doing this, we were having ice cream cones dipped by Dad’s skilled
levels with a butter knife or we were having malts.
Throughout the years, all of us were sitting on those steps
podding peas or cutting green beans. Mary Ann and Mike
had a ritual of reading the “Family Circus” cartoon from the
newspaper each morning. They always had a smile on their
faces as they shared the cartoon! Mary Ann and Mike also
enjoyed dancing and bowling as time allowed. In 2007,

Bayless, Franklin Dale - Franklin Dale Bayless was born on August 23, 1933 to Emma Grace (Eby) and Olin Russell Bayless. Frank passed away in the evening of Tuesday July 23, 2019 at the Elm Heights Care Center. He was 85 years old.

Franklin Bayless was born in Blanchard, Iowa, where he joined siblings Merril "Bud", BIll, Kenneth "Ace", Mildred (Finlay) and Gwen (Whitehill). Later he was joined by Mary Lou (Chambers). Franklin attended country school and later Coin High School where he graduated in 1951. Frank later graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville as his class president in 1954.

After finishing college, Frank enlisted into the Navy and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex where he was a cryptographer and traveled across the pacific rim. Following his departure from the Navy, discharged in San Francisco, he stopped through Denver Colorado to visit his childhood friend, Jim Yeisley, on his way home to Iowa, and there he decided to put down roots in the Rockies. He moved later to Cheyenne Wyoming and then decided to attend Law School in Laramie. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1965, and moved to Idaho Falls Idaho to work as an attorney for the US Atomic Energy Commission. He returned to Cheyenne where he met Jane (Chiswell) Sizemore through now federal district Judge Alan Johnson, a mutual friend, and married in 1968. His son Steven was born in 1970.

Frank worked for Laramie County Legal Services defending indigent clients and was an assistant prosecutor working under longtime friend Tom Carrol and assigned to represent the Department of Social Services in helping protect children from abuse and neglect. He later established his own private practice and law firm and was admitted to the Wyoming and US Supreme Court Bars, was appointed by the Governor to the state's land use commission and volunteered to help run the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. He practiced law in Cheyenne until 2005 and then returned to Iowa to be closer to family and the childhood home that he loved. In Shenandoah, he enjoyed writing, reading books on history, politics, and current affairs, talking basketball and football, and palling around with friends over coffee.

He made many friends in Wyoming, Colorado and Iowa in his work, at his church, and through his volunteering. He was described by more than one colleague as a consummate professional with 'no ego' -- a disposition rarely seen in such an adversarial and rarified profession. As such, he was described by tough minded but with "a kind and generous heart...He lived by the philosophy that if he could help someone out he should." He was generous with friends, and very close to his family and loved his son, grandson, his brothers and sisters and in-laws, and all his nieces and nephews. He was a frequent source of advice, comfort and solace to many of his relatives, and to a few friends whom he treated as family.

Frank is survived by his son Steven and daughter-in-law Nicole Cohen, and grandson Rian of Washington DC, and sister-in-law Wilma Bayless of Elmo, Missouri and brother-in-law Jim Chambers of Council Bluffs Iowa. He is survived by nieces, Joan (Bayless) Edwards, Peggy (Finlay) Oliver, Jan (Finlay) Western, and Karen (Chambers) Cobb and his nephews Bob Bayless, Duane Whitehill, John Bayless, and Brad Chambers. Dr. Pedro Enrique Garcia, Jr.
November 28, 1946 - July 20, 2019
Pedro Enrique Garcia, Jr. was born in Camagüey, Cuba on November 28, 1946, to Pedro and
Maria Eugenia Garcia. He was an active child and loved sports, especially baseball. After
Communism struck Cuba in 1959, Pedro and his younger brother, Juan, came to the US in
1962. Upon their arrival to the Miami Airport, they saw an exit sign, which they immediately
associated with success because in Spanish “exito” means success, so they followed the sign.
They remained in a refugee camp in Kendal, Florida for three months until their mother arrived.
Pedro was only 15.
Pedro’s mother was offered a teaching job in Clarinda, Iowa. Pedro’s father was exiled in Spain
at the time and was finally reunited with his family in Iowa. Upon their arrival in Clarinda, Pedro
Jr. experienced snow for the first time. Clarinda High School is where it all began for Pedro. He
learned English quickly, and during his sophomore year, now at age 16, he met his future wife,
Bev Tomlinson, in a study hall. Bill Richardson, Ron Davis, Bob Mazawa, and many others
became Pedro’s lifelong friends.
During his senior year at the University of Kansas, Bev and Pedro were married. They moved to
Los Angeles and then to the San Diego area where Pedro began teaching Spanish at Poway
High School. They were married from 1968-78, and had two children, Hydee and Eric.
Pedro’s love for the freedom and opportunities the US provided, encouraged him to manifest
his own American Dream. He received a Master’s degree from San Diego State and his
doctorate in Education Administration from the University of Southern California.
In 1984, he met Priscilla Partridge and were quickly married. Together with her three children,
Heather, Heidi, and Blaze, were now united for the first time with Pedro’s two children in
Camarillo, California. The family enjoyed going to USC football games. Pedro’s attendance for
never missing a USC home game stretched over forty years.
He worked his way to the top of his profession, and became one of the most dynamic
superintendents in California and Tennessee. He went from one district to the next, with each
one carrying more responsibility and size than its predecessor.
Years after the children became adults, Pedro moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he
became the Superintendent of Nashville Public Schools for seven years. He also served on
many boards, and in 2003, was personally chosen by George W. Bush to be on the Presidential
Commission on Service and Community Participation. In 2007, The Franklin Covey Corporation
recognized him with their National Leadership Award.
Upon his return to California, Pedro landed his dream job at his Alma Mater, USC, in Los
Angeles. Being a professor and mentoring doctoral students of the Rossier School of
Education was a blessing to him. Pedro’s health concerns resulted in his early retirement from
USC. His homecoming to Clarinda came in late 2017.
Pedro was not only an inspirational educator, prolific writer, creative photographer, self-appointed movie critic, founding member of the Antifinks, master joke teller, beloved mentor,
loyal friend, and excellent provider for his family but most of all, he was a devoted follower of
Jesus Christ. He led Bible studies in both California and Iowa. He believed that the meaning of
life was to glorify God.
May his soul rest in peace with the Lord.
He is preceded in death by his wife Priscilla, along with his father, Pedro, and mother, Maria
Eugenia.
Left to cherish his memory are his step-mother, Wanda Garcia of Clarinda; brother, Juan Garcia (Millie); the five children, Heather Livingston (Rory), Heidi Johnsen (Ross), Hydee Tehana (Lisa), Eric Garcia-March; grandchildren, Ashleigh Gentry (Paul), Brittany Long (Bart), Chance (Alexandria), Hope and Georgia Peach Johnsen, Tommy and Alex Dullam, Callie, Ryan and Brady Holbert, Chloe, Evangeline, Magnus and Adelaide Garcia; and many, many friends.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Ritchie Funeral Home from 9 to 10:30 AM with the family greeting friends. Interment will be held at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Clarinda, Iowa.

Gloria Grace Goff Haffner was born November 11, 1932 in Clarinda Iowa. She was one of four siblings, and the only girl born to Newell and Grace Goff. Gloria graduated the 8th grade from Clarinda. At the early age of 16 years, she married the love of her life, Carl “Junior” Haffner in Columbus Ohio. To this union, nine children were born: Carl “Skeeter”, Terry, Gary, Bobby, Donnie, Teddy, Karen, Sherry, Timmy.

Being raised with three brothers was a fun challenge she often reminisced about. Being boys as boys do, her brothers often teased her by taking her baby dolls, sometimes even cutting off the doll’s hair. Gloria had a natural gift of being passionate. Her brothers meant alot to her, it was important to her to provide meals, especially during the holidays, for the entire family.

Amongst raising a baseball team of their own, many neighborhood children and school friends gathered at the Haffner home as it was known as the “local hangout”. The kids enjoyed seeing the uncommon household pets, such as racoons, squirrels, owls, pigeons, skunks, pigs, among many others. Nurturing the stray animals was just as important to Gloria as raising all of the children.

Gloria was adamant that her children were instilled with her beliefs and love for Jesus and made it a priority on Sundays to attend church. She was always proud to have all of her children in church with her. On Mother’s Day, she was often recognized for bringing the most children. In their free time, Carl & Gloria enjoyed doing woodworking, camping, bowling, and traveling to Branson, Missouri. Gloria was employed as a caretaker in numerous positions around the community. She spent time in the Clarinda School District and local nursing homes. Upon retirement, she chose to love on her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. In 45 short years, she managed to influence more people that most do in their lifetime. She was a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a partner, a friend, a teacher, a mentor, a colleague and a confidant, just to name a few. Peterson, Wayne - Celebration of Life Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019 at the Veterans Memorial Chapel in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church or Nishna Productions.

Michael Wayne Peterson, a beloved son and brother, left us and went to be with his maker after being struck with a heart attack on Friday, August 23rd. At the time, Wayne was living with his sister Debbie Monet and her husband Will in Pueblo West, CO. Wayne was a kind gentle soul who was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished.

Wayne's story starts on May 1, 1955 as the first child of Don and Elizabeth Peterson. He was born in Oak Harber, WA while Don was serving in the US Navy. After Don was discharged from the Navy, Wayne and his parents moved to Iowa and settled in Northboro, IA and later in Shenandoah. Over the next few years, Wayne became an older brother to Debbie, Gary, and Mark.

Wayne attended the Yorktown Special School in Yorktown, IA from age 7 to 18. Wayne enjoyed the school very much and thrived under the care of wonderful caring teachers. Wayne was known by the students, teachers, and parents to be a gentle quiet boy. Wayne had a love and talent for assembling puzzles of all kinds. When others gave up on a complex puzzle, the pile of pieces were always handed over to Wayne as everyone knew he would assemble it and finish the task. Wayne was always present when films were shown at school, but his attention was not on the screen. The teachers would always place a chair right next to the projector so that Wayne could watch it up close and study the amazing rotating contraption. After Yorktown, Wayne attended Nishna Productions in Shenandoah NPI until he was 40 years old. Again, he thrived under the care of wonderful caring teachers.

At home, Wayne enjoyed his passion with puzzles, playing with his Speak & Spell, watching bowling and football on TV, reading the TV schedule and planning his future viewing, playing his albums and 45 records, and riding his bike up and down the street, parking briefly at each corner to watch the cars go by.

Wayne was a member of the First Christian church in Shenandoah, and attended services and events there all his life. Wayne enjoyed his time at the church because of the great love, kindness, and warmth they showed him.

Wayne did require much care and assistance throughout his life, but he gave so much more to everyone. The kind silly smile he'd give people who shook his hand always warmed hearts. His quiet easy-going demeanor calmed others. Those who knew Wayne well marveled and laughed at the banter he used with people as he manipulated and played them into giving him confectionery treats or French fries. He was a blessing and a privilege to be around, and he will be missed so much, but we have peace knowing where Wayne is: "Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him." (Thes 4:13-14).

Wayne was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth and brother Gary. Wayne is survived by his father Don; sister Debbie Monet and her husband Will; niece Marci Bachicha and her husband Mike and their children Monique, Monica, and Mike; brother Mark Peterson and his wife Johnell; niece Nikkele Peterson and her sons Jay and Phoenix; nephews Adam Peterson, Phil Peterson, Ryan Peterson, Jake Dickerson, and John Dickerson
