Van Fosson, June Ripley - June Van Fosson, age 103, of College Springs, Iowa, entered into peace Monday, February 6, 2017 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 10, 2017 at the College Springs Presbyterian Church with Reverend James Crapson officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 10 at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, College Springs, Iowa. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa.
Theora June (Ripley) Van Fosson was born on October 22, 1913 to Eugene and Bernice (Higgins) Ripley northwest of Shenandoah just off old highway 2. For most of her childhood, the family lived on a large farm in Atchison County, MO. When June was 14, her now widowed mother moved her six children to a farm south of College Springs, IA., on “The Goldenrod”. June attended Amity High School for 2 years, then “boarded” with a family in Clarinda so she could attend classes for Normal Training to become a country school teacher. She graduated from Clarinda High School in 1931.
June married Raymond E. Van Fosson on February 25, 1932. They lived on several rented farms throughout Page County during the 30's and 40's. During those years, four sons were born. In 1947 they purchased a farm southwest of College Springs where they eventually raised dairy cows. Ray died in December 1971 and June stayed on the farm to help son Charlie run the dairy. Next, she moved into College Springs for several years before moving into Clarinda with Charlie and Beverly to “the little pink house down the hill from Easter's”. In December, 2008, June moved to Goldenrod Manor where she “could lay down and read a good book.” June was very happy there.
Before anyone knew the term community activist, June was one! Even though she was the mother of all boys, she was a 4-H leader for 3 different girls' clubs in Page County during the 40's and 50's. She saw the need for better facilities for girls' exhibits at the county fair, so she and another leader began the first food stand at the fair to raise some money to start a fund toward that effort. Ray and June were active in Page County Farm Bureau, June being the Women's Committee Chairman 1952-53. She was also named the County Homemaker in 1952. Page County Farm Bureau named June their Outstanding Citizen in 1986, the first woman to have the honor. When June learned that neighbors lost several rows of corn into the creek after a heavy rain, she called the local Soil Conservation office to ask for help. She hosted an informal meeting in her home and the Mill Creek Watershed was born. June was an active member of Page County Republican Women for many years. She served as a Delegate to the Older Iowan's Legislature 1983-84, making many trips to the statehouse. After her tenure, she stayed active with Iowa's Agency on Aging (Area 13), and with their support, co-chaired the first Health Fair in Page County. She joined the Betterment Committee in College Springs and spearheaded efforts to raze the dilapidated buildings on Main Street and build a new community building named Amity Hall. This group of folks were the first to start a recycling program in Page County. She was active in the College Springs Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday School and serving as a deaconess. Space prohibits listing all the many things June did with and for others that make her a wonderful example for her family to follow.
June was proceeded in death by her parents, siblings Marguerite Allen, Lucy Mendenhall, Bertha Lymer, K.W. Ripley, Warren Ripley; husband Ray, infant daughter, Alice June; son Leo Van Fosson; daughters-in-law Elma (Richardson) Van Fosson and Beverly (Cavner) Van Fosson; two infant grandsons; one infant great-granddaughter; and one infant great-great grandson. She is survived by sons John (Sue) Van Fosson of rural Clarinda, Charles Van Fosson of Villisca, David (Jane) Van Fosson of Forsyth, MO, daughter-in-law Marie Van Fosson of Braddyville; grandchildren Teresa (Kevin) Barlow of Clarinda, Julie Van Fosson of Fayetteville, NC, Robin (Linda) Van Fosson of Shenandoah, Bruce (Rebecca) Van Fosson of Clarinda, Betsy (Bryce) Petersen of Burt, IA; Duane (Brooke) Van Fosson of Villisca; Annette (Charles) Davis of Forsyth, MO; Kim (Randy) Gotschall of Braddyville, Cindy Van Fosson of Clarinda, Karen (Tony) Luke of St. Joseph, MO, and Pamela Culp of Mound City, MO; 22 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren

Watkins, Phyllis "Ruth" Shambaugh - Phyllis Ruth (Shambaugh) Watkins, age 94, passed away peacefully February 28, 2017, following a brief illness. Artist, wife, mother of seven, and dear friend to many, Ruth looked for the “better angels” in us all and lived her life with kindness, grace, and an irrepressible sense of humor.
She was born October 16, 1922 to Ira W. and Jessie (Field) Shambaugh. Ruth was always proud of the fact that during her mother’s tenure as Page County Superintendent of Schools, Jessie founded 3-H Clubs which evolved into the 4-H organization.
Affectionately known as “Dazee” by her friends, Ruth loved growing up in Clarinda, Iowa and referred to her small town childhood as a storybook experience.
In 1940, she graduated from Clarinda High School and attended Christian College in Columbia, MO., before transferring to the University of Iowa where she received a BA in Fine Art, an MA in Journalism, and met her husband, Robert Watkins.
Ruth and Bob were married on June 2, 1946, in a garden wedding at the Shambaugh family home, then headed west to begin an odyssey that would span 64 years, and include the births of seven children, and homes in Los Angeles, New York City, Greenwich, CT, and San Francisco, before coming full-circle in the late 1960’s to settle permanently on Pinhook Farm in southwest Iowa.
After returning to her hometown, she supported the Clarinda community through involvement in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Clarinda Garden Club, PEO, and mentoring young art students.
A gifted writer and artist, her gentle manner belied a fiercely intelligent mind, quick wit, and unique way of viewing the world. These qualities were apparent in the cartoon strip she wrote and illustrated during the 1950’s for Ladies Home Journal called Be Sure To Bring The Children. While raising the ever-growing brood that inspired her cartoons, she managed to develop a successful career as a portrait artist, specializing in pastels of children and creating commissioned pieces for families throughout the United States and England.
Ruth will be remembered for her creative spirit, quiet faith, ever-present Rolleiflex camera, love of the beauty found in nature be it a magnificent sunset or a single buttercup blooming on the shoulder of a gravel road, and never missing an opportunity to tap dance in the kitchen.
Preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Watkins; daughter Jennifer Wren Watkins; brother William Shambaugh.
Survived by her children Wendy Watkins, Heidi (Don) Hess, Piper (David) Hobbs, Jed (Christine) Watkins, Heather (Jim) Zenk, and Seth (Christy) Watkins. Grandchildren Jordana Del Feld, Samantha Weiland, Kaitlin (Chance) McLemore; Kristen Hess, Amy and Scott Lovett, Hannah, Molly, James, and Heidi Watkins; Mackenzie and Shane Zenk; Spencer and Tatum Watkins. Great-grandchild Aviv Zukerman.
There will be no funeral services. A Celebration of Life memorial will be held at a later date. Memorials preferred to: Nodaway Valley Historical Museum for maintenance of the Goldenrod School, or Iowa Public Television.
The Watkins family wishes to extend a special thank you to Connie Baldwin for her exceptional loyalty and kindness. They also offer their gratitude to the caregivers, nurses, and physicians at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Goldenrod Manor, Eiler House, Heartland Hospice Care, Home Sweet Home, and Nurses On Call
