Finley, Robert McCullough -Robert McCullough Finley was born in Adams county, Ohio, on Nov 25, 1817, and died at his home south of this city on Saturday, October 14, 1899, at two o'clock p.m. Funeral services were held at the home on Monday, October 16, at eleven o'clock am conducted by Rev S.E. Martin, of College Springs, and the body was laid to rest in the Clarinda cemetery. The funeral was one of the most largely attended ever held from this city. Music was furnished by Mr and Mrs McCutchan, Mrs Wm. Irwin and M.G. Hoge. The six pall bearers were, Samuel Finley, Christopher and Samuel Hart, James McCracken, J.R. Knox and James Blair. The floral offerings were beautiful.
Kidney trouble, combined with paralysis and a general bread-down, were the cause of Mr Finley's death. He was first taken seriously ill about three weeks ago, but was not confined to his bed until a week ago. He was conscious to the last, and bore his suffering with great fortitude and patience.
Mr Finley became a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church of North America in early manhood, his parents being members of that body. In the spring of 1847 he removed to Peoria county, Ill, and there became a charter member of the Associate Presbyterian church of Bethel, now the United Presbyterian church. Here he remained until the spring of 1893, when he removed to Page county, Iowa.
He was married to Elizabeth Catherine Hogue, of Butler County, Ohio, on September 5, 1845. Of this marriage were born nine children, --six of whom,--John H., Horace A., Elmer H., William R., Phoebe Damaris (Now Mrs Jas. Pinkerton) and Ellen Jane, (now Mrs Karnaghan), are living, and three, Mary Ann, Robert G., and an infant, are dead. Mrs Finley died on August 26, 1863. On December 8, 1868, Mr Finley was again married to Mrs Eliza Jane Logan, of Peoria County. Three children were born to them, all of them dying in infancy. Mrs Finley herself passed away in this city on March 31st, 1897.
All of the children of Mr Finley reside in the neighborhood of the home where he died, except William R., whose home is in Rockford, Ill., and who was unable to be at the funeral. One notable act of Mr Finley's life was that he left to each of his children a good farm, and all his life he seemed to be laboring for their happiness. Only a few days before his death he purchased a sixty-acre tract of land near his home, for one of his daughters, in order that the children might have the same legacy from him. Generosity, industry, and honesty were characteristics of Mr Finley's life. He was a conscientious and hard-working man, and his splendid life will be an incentive and an inspiration to his children and to those who knew him best. Freudenburg, Bertha -
Rebekah Margaretha Bertha Freudenburg - The enitre life of Mrs George Freudenburg who died [Apr 19, 1925] in a hospital in St Joseph, Mo., was spent in Page county, Iowa, being the oldest daughter of John Herman Sump (deceased) and his wife, Maria Louise, nee Ringel, born September 10th, 1885 in Nodaway township. In her early youth she was baptized in the name of the Triume God by the Rev C.F.W. Brandt of the Immanuel Lutheran church. After attending the Christian Day school of that church for several years she was confirmed in the year 1894 on March 18th by the same pastor. Her confirmation vow she faithfully kept to her very last. The good influence of her christian parents left an indelible impression upon her. In the year 1902, the 30th of January, she entered the estate of holy matrimony with Mr George Freudenburg. This union was blessed with four sons: one, Arnold, preceded her into eternity, dying in infancy. Unto her children she was a good Christian mother who considered not only their bodily needs, but also their spiritual welfare.
Since the year 1918 when she with her husband and family moved to their present home, east of the city, she was a faithful member of St John's Lutheran church.
Mrs Freudenburg was blessed with a very pleasant disposition and therefore naturally has many friends, who, with the dear relatives, mourn her early death.
Her married life was a very happy life until about two years ago, when she was afflicted with an insidious disease. After consulting and following the instructions of local physicians for some time she sought medical aid from specialists in Omaha. At times the prospects for complete recovery were good, but further developments of the hidden disease destroyed these fervent hopes. Even in her great affliction she maintained a cheerful spirit.
As a last resort she willingly submitted to a serious operation for tumor in a hospital at St Joseph. The first report after the operation was very favorable. The following day, however, her strength began to fail, and she peacefully fell asleep Saturday noon at 12:15. The prayer on her lips as life passed away reads: "Jesus blood and righteousness, My Beauty are, my glorious dress: Wherein before my God I stand, When I shall reach the heavenly land."
Besides the aged mother, Mrs Maria Sump, and the grief-stricken husband, her departure is mourned by the three sons: Rueben, Melvin and Ralph and one daughter-in-law, Mrs Sophie Freudenburg. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Fred Sump and William Sump of Yorktown, John and Dietrich Sump of Clarinda, Mrs Anna Janssen, Mrs Dorothea Nothwehr and Mrs Mary Herzberg of Yorktown. She will also be sadly missed by many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the St John's Lutheran church in charge of the pastor, Rev T.J. Vogel, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The text of the sermon was: "For to me to live in Christ, and to die is gain," Phil. 1, 21. An appropriate duet was ung by the Misses Helena Hennemann and Elsie Sunderman. The Rev O. Bahr of Yorktown was present by request and gave an address in German.
Pallbearers were: Fred, John, Will and Dick Sump, John Nothwehr and William Jansen. The attendance at the funeral was very large, and many people had to be turned away from the house and could not hear the service. The floral offerings were profuse. And foremost a devoted, supportive Mom. Mary was a life-long member, diligent worker for Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. She enjoyed sewing, baking, reading. She was a member of WW Club, and played in some card clubs. In later years, she also treasured time spent with her family, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as much as she could when transcending distances was possible. Mary and Donald had 64 years of blessed marriage.
When it was possible for her to return to the working-outside-the-home world, she returned to work at Iowa Power and Light Company. (MidAmerican Energy). Upon retirement from that career, she was convinced to have another--baking. She found sanctuary at the Sanctuary, making breads and pies. Mary's pleasure was put to good use. Cinnamon rolls and Lemon Coconut pie were among the favorites, gaining her praise thanks to Iowa Boy, Shenandoah's own Chuck Offenberger. She enjoyed the young co-workers, the environment, and became another "grandma" to little Miss Franny, all of which fulfilled a special niche for herself and for the community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, nephew William Bateman, and husband Donald. She is survived by four children: Nancy Hertel (Gary) of Madison, WI; David of Shenandoah, Daniel of Shenandoah, and Kristen Sneed (Andrew) of Shirland,IL Five grandchildren: Kerry (Hertel) Boysen, Andy Hertel, Katie (Peterson) Gaspar, Jacob Peterson, and Nathan Peterson.
