Christensen, Theresa Laughlin - Theresa Christensen, age 83, of Coin, Iowa, passed away on February 23, 2015 at the Winters Park Nursing Home in Garland, Texas. Theresa was born on October 13, 1931, in Imogene, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard James and Irene Ellen (Gutchenritter) Laughlin. Although she was christened with the name Florence, those who knew and loved her called her Theresa.
She attended and graduated from St. Patrick's Catholic School in Imogene, Iowa. After graduation from high school, Theresa worked at the Shenandoah Hand Community Hospital as an aide. She met Kennard Christensen while he was in the Marine Corps and stationed in California. They married on December 30, 1950 (Kenny's birthday) and moved to California for several years while Kenny served his time in the Marines. They returned to Coin to live and raise a family.
She was a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Shenandoah, Iowa. Theresa was placed on this Earth to be a loving mother and homemaker. She cherished this role and found it to be wonderful and fulfilling. She was the proud mother of four children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Theresa always considered Coin, Iowa her home but in 2006, Theresa went to Richardson, Texas to stay with her daughter, JoAnn. She attended daily mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She made many friends at church, at the weekly hair appointments and at the senior citizen center. Theresa was born with a huge giving heart and always thought of others and never of herself. Sometimes her thoughtfulness was extreme but that just showed the size of her caring for others. During WWII years, instead of serving his country overseas (His eye sight was too poor to be drafted.), he served his community as coach of football and basketball at Peru H.S. In his second year of coaching, the basketball team went to the State Tournament.
On Feb. 4, 1945 Harold was united in marriage to Christina Rosenthal at Sterling, Nebraska. Their early married life was in Coin, IA. He "retired" from farming and began working for 14 years at Farmaster, a Shenandoah gate making factory. When Farmaster was closing their business, he was a security guard for them. He remained on the farm until he was not able to see well enough to drive to Shenandoah. He moved to Forest Park Manor in Shenandoah. In January, 2012, he fell and broke his hip. He then moved to the Ambassador Care Center in Sidney, IA where he resided the remainder of his life.
Besides using his skills as a carpenter to make things, Harold enjoyed hunting, gardening and fishing. (The name Fisher could not have been more appropriate.) Giese, Bernard Robert - Bernard Robert Giese was born on July 10, 1926 in the family home in Fort Dodge, Iowa. "Bernie" passed away Saturday afternoon, February 21, 2015 at the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa, at the age of 88. His parents were Russell and Juanita (Koll) Giese.
He attended the Fort Dodge Schools and graduated high school with the Class of 1943. In junior high, he went out for football and broke both shoulder blades. That was the end of his football career. His father worked on the Illinois Central Railroad and his mother stayed home with the children.
When World War II broke out, he talked his parents into signing the papers that would allow him to join the Air Force at age 17. One of his duties was to take home a boy killed in service. He had a long relationship with the parents. Another memory Bernie talked about was when he flew over Japan and saw the destruction of the atom bomb.
After receiving his discharge, he went back to Fort Dodge and worked for the Railroad for awhile, then Brooks Laundry and Sunbeam Dairy. Soon after, he began working for Gambles Corp. Shortly after coming back to Fort Dodge, he met the love of his life, Ardyce Durschmidt. They were married in 1947. In 1948, they had their first child, Karen. It was hard after the war to find housing, but soon after Karen came into the world, Bernie and Ardyce bought their first two bedroom home and did all the work themselves, sometimes even staying up round the clock. In 1954, Russell was born.
In 1956, Bernie was transferred by Gambles Corp. to Shenandoah, Iowa. He played softball on the Methodist Church team. And then he discovered "GOLF", and he loved it! He has been Club champion, Handicapped champion, and Senior's champion. He has also had several holes-in-one. When Gambles came up for sale, Bernie and Ardyce jumped on it. They turned it into an appliance store from a hardware store. They also owned the Furniture Store and the Carpet Store. He served three, seven year terms on the executive board of the American Legion Country Club.
In the last years of Bernie's life you would have seen him around the neighborhood on his little red scooter called the rascal. He would ride with John Longstreet or go to his granddaughter's house up the street to do any remaining work on the house.
Preceding Bernie in death were his parents, Russell and Juanita (Koll) Giese; son, Russell (Rusty) Giese; sister, Audrey Hartman and brother-in-law, DeWayne. Dorlene Mae Graham was born on December 29, 1926 in New Market, Iowa to Arnold Bashor and Mae Combs Bashor and passed away on February 7, 2015 at Westridge Quality Care in Clarinda, Iowa. Dorlene spent her entire life, with the exception of 12 years, in New Market. She attended Lindsey School and graduated from New Market High School in 1944. She and many of her high school classmates have remained close and spent many wonderful reunions together as well as lunches, sometimes on a monthly basis.
During the summer of 1946, she met Richard (Dick) Graham while he was visiting relatives in the Clarinda area. They were married on March 11, 1948. They were blessed with 3 children, Sandra Jean, Rebecca Sue (Becky), and Richard Dean (Rick). Dorlene was a “stay-at-home” mom and was always there for her children and husband. She tended a large garden, canning many vegetables and fruits. She was a wonderful cook and the cookie jar was never empty. She also was a beautiful seamstress making most of the girl’s dresses, even for those special occasions such as “Sweetheart” dance and prom and even weddings. If needed, she would alter the same dress, changing sleeve length or adding a jacket to change the look for the next event.

Many of her quilts were hand pieced and hand quilted. In later years she found embroidery to be a wonderful pastime. She made countless sets of “tea towels”, which are now prized possessions of relatives and close friends.
Her clubs were a source of many special friendships and happy hours. In the late 50’s a group of women got together when their husbands would go bowling. Finally the gals decided to form a “Birthday” Club and the tradition has continued to this day. She also enjoyed “Pitch” Club, “Domino” Club and was an active member of “Women Who Care”. During the past year when Dorlene was unable to drive, the club members always made sure she had a ride. Dorlene still enjoyed being the hostess and often volunteered her home as the spot to meet.
Dorlene was a member of the New Market United Methodist Church and a Past President of UMW. She was a 60 year member of Eastern Star and a Past Matron.
Dorlene’s pride and joy was her family, 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. She loved having them stop by for Sunday supper, or hearing stories of how they were doing at school or in their jobs in distant cities.

Hurdle, May Painter - A telegram from Eaton, Colo., was received here Saturday, conveying the sad intelligence to relatives that Mrs E.F. Hurdle had died that morning.
She was well known here among the young folks a few years past as Miss May Painter, a sister of Mrs F.P. Barr living Southwest of town.
All might be said of Mrs Hurdle in a few words. She was a most loveable Christian Woman, she had no superior and but few equals. To her the promise is given of Eternal Life.
We did not learn the particulars concerning her death. Distance prevented Mrs Barr from attending the funeral. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Aug 8, 1893
