Anderson, Alice Mae Snively -

Mrs. Alice Mae Anderson, 88, of Braddyville, died Saturday, October 16,1993 at Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda.
She was born March 30, 1905, near Siam, the daughter of Lorenzo and Florence Maxwell Snively. She was married to Carl Edwin Anderson, February 14, 1926. He preceded her in death April 17, 1975. She had worked as a clerk and in restaurants.
Survivors include four children: Dorothy Dougherty, Fayette, Mo.; Mrs. John (Mabel) Hamilton, Plattsburg, Mo.; Charles Edwin Anderson, Loveland, Co.: and Eva O'Dell, St. Joseph, Mo.; brothers, Harold Snively, Florence, Az.; Howard Snively, Warsaw, In.; and a sister Esther Hamilton, Clarinda. There are 13 grandchildren, several great-granchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband, daughter Hazel Miller, one sister, Marjorie Bangs and brothers, Oral, Earl, and Eldon Snively. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 19 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. John Clark officiating. There is open visitation at the funeral home. Burial will be in Braddyville Cemetery.

Beckel, Helen E. Yenck -

Mrs. Helen E. Beckel, 80, of Clarinda died at her home early Thursday, July 8,1993.
She was born March 25,1913 at Pana, II, the daughter of Nicholas and Esther Cochran Yenck. She was married to Arthur J. Beckel on October 11,1931. He preceded her in death September 4, 1987. Mrs. Beckel had worked at several different jobs, the last being at the MHI.
She is survived by four children: Mrs. Horace (Donna Jean) Jones, Clarinda; Donald Eugene Beckel,
Clarinda; Darrell John Beckel, New Market; and Mrs. Danny (Diana Marie) Moulden, Leavenworth, Ks. There are 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bernice Crovisier of Eagle Grove is a sister.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband, and brother James Nicholas Yenck.

Bissen, Joseph Michael - Joseph Michael Bissen was born July 11, 1925 in Defiance, Iowa; a son to Paul and Mary (Heinzlmier) Bissen. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance.
Joe went to St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance and Crawford County Public School. After completing the 8th grade he then stayed home to work on the family farm. He grew up in Defiance, Buck Grove and Dunlap.
Joe served in the United States Army from October of 1950 to September of 1952. During that time he was active in the Korean War as a gunner in the infantry.
Joe was united in marriage to Leona Mary Kramer on January 25, 1954, at St. Peters Catholic Church in Defiance. To this union seven children were blessed to the couple. They began their life together farming in Dunlap, Iowa, and later in Charter Oak, Iowa. After retiring from farming they moved to Earling, Iowa, where they owned and operated the Hi-Way Café. Joe also worked at West Central Job Development in Harlan. An achievement he was proud of was getting his GED at the age of 44. In 1974, they moved to Clarinda. Employed by Iowa Western Community College, he worked at Clarinda MHI for 15 years as a Work Experience Coordinator and Industrial Arts Therapy Instructor. Upon his retirement, he continued his interests in gardening, woodworking, going to auctions and selling antiques and crafts. He will always be remembered as a ‘good ole Joe’, known for his many jokes and stories. He had a kind heart and was always there to help out family and friends.
Joe passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona in 2009, parents, brothers: Melvin and Donald Bissen; sisters: Rita Benjamin and Sister Leona (Hildagard) Bissen.
Joe is survived by his daughters: Connie Carrico and husband Larry of Murray, IA, Kathy Hammes of Clarinda, Barbara Volker of Carrollton, TX, Janice Milleson and husband Scott of Stanton, IA, Patty Handley and husband Tom of Lewisville, TX; sons: Joseph Jr. and wife Karrie of Warrensburg, MO and Bob and wife Delia of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren: Julie (Shane) Foote, Jason Norton, Jim Norton, Tanya Turner (Rick Dodd), Alana (Cory) Hites, Michael (Ewa) Hammes, Robert (Sarah) Hammes, Amy Volker, Shannon Volker, Nicholas Bissen, Benjamin Bissen, Matthew Bissen, Zach (Carly) Milleson, Lance Bissen, Rafael and Michael Arrendondo, Derek Handley, Shae Handley and fiance Chad Moran; 13 great grandchildren; sisters: Stella Hodapp, Theresa Simmons, Marie Jans, Margaret Adams and Armella (Germain) Redding; brothers: Paul Jr. (Martha) Bissen and Kenneth (Alma) Bissen; sisters-in-law: Georgia Bissen, Theresa Grote, Mary Heese and Marlene Kramer; along with many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian burial for Joseph M. Bissen will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the St. Clare Catholic Church in Clarinda. Burial will follow the service in the Clarinda Cemetery with military honors provided by Clarinda American Legion Sergy Post #98.

Visitation with the family will be held Friday, February 28, starting at 5:00 p.m. with a rosary service and continuing until 8:00 p.m. at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda

 

Blosser, Virgil -

Rev. Virgil Blosser, 81, of Brighton died Saturday, July 31, 1993 in an Iowa City hospital.
Rev. Blosser and wife Edith lived in Shambaugh from 1977 to 1983 when he was the pastor of the Shambaugh Church of God. In the spring of 1983, his wife died. He later married Isa Hughes of Shambaugh, who died December 31,1991, while they were living in Brighton.
Rev. Blosser was very active in the Church of God, serving as pastor in several different areas.
Survivors include five children Leon Blosser, Carolyn Billingsley, Eileen Norris, Amy (Mrs Richard) Corso and Rose Ann (Mrs Daniel) Rogers, also several grandchildren.

Borthwick, Ernest E. -

Ernest E. Borthwick, 82, of Clarinda died Tuesday afternoon, July 27, 1993 at his home after a long illness.
He was born May 3,1911 in Lincoln Township, Page County, the son of James Leo and Emily Stitt Borthwick. On October 2,1936 he was married to Lois Allen. They lived on their farm north of College Springs their entire married lives.
Borthwick was a lifelong farmer and active in the community and church activities.
He is survived by his wife Lois; three sons, William Borthwick and wife Arlene of Tulsa, Ok; James Borthwick and wife Marcene of Shawnee Mission, Ks; Mark Borthwick and wife Emmy of Falls Church, Va; two daughters, Rebecca Borthwick-Aiken and husband Robert of Meadville, Pa; Mary Borthwick and husband Robert Minch of Juneau, Al; six grandchildren; three sisters, Nancy Whigham, Blanchard; Anna Hicks, Eugene, Or; Jean Anderson, Witt Springs, Ar.
Borthwick was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Ruth Blair, and two brothers, Paul and Donald.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the College Springs Presbyterian Church with Rev. James Crapson officiating. Visitation will be at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home from 7-8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Summitt Cemetery near Yorktown.

Bryant, Beryl R. -

Beryl R. Bryant, 76, of Clarinda died Monday, July 26,1993 at Municipal Hospital where he had been admitted a few hours earlier.
He was born June 14, 1917 at Clarinda, the son of Virgil and Rose Parker Bryant. He was a barber and veteran of World War II, having served in the army.
He is survived by a son, Rudy Bryant of Kona, Hi; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren; a brother, Buell Bryant of Clarinda; step father, Ottie Thompson of Clarinda. Also surviving is his companion, Dorothy Oliver.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. John Clark officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Case, Iva Irene Ellison - Iva Irene Case, age 83 of Hamburg passed away on Monday; Feb. 10 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lincoln, Neb.
She was born on June 2, 1930 at Watson, Mo.; the daughter of George Daniel and Elsie (Turner) Ellison. She attended school and graduated from the Watson High School. She then attended Peru State College, Peru, Neb. where she obtained her teaching certificate. Iva taught school at Cox Chapel Country School, where she met Robert L. Case Jr. They were united in marriage on July 7, 1949 at the Methodist parsonage in Sidney.
Bob and Iva farmed near Braddyville and owned and operated the Braddyville Market for 19 years where they enjoyed serving their customers and making sure that the kids went home with a sweet treat. They later moved to Hamburg where they owned and operated the Hamburg Motel for 18 years. After retirement, to keep busy, Iva provided home health care services for others and worked in the dietary department at the Grape Community Hospital.
One of Iva’s greatest pleasures was preparing generous and delicious meals for her family and friends. Not a holiday went by that Iva didn’t whip up a plentiful smorgasbord of tasty goodies to everyone’s delight.
She is survived by her husband Robert L. Case of Hamburg; a daughter Sue Witthoft and husband Richard of Clarinda; two granddaughters: Kate Jorgensen , husband Tyler, and their daughter Abigail of Gurnee, Ill.; and Emily Witthoft and fiancé David Furst and their son Easton of Clarinda; sisters-in-law: Shirley Ellison of Rock Port, Mo., Lois Jean Ellison of Braddyville, and Arliss Kohout of Clarinda, many nieces and nephews, and a host of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by siblings: Laura Harmon and her husband Bill, Bill Ellison, Ernie Ellison, and Beverly Robinson.
Services were held Thursday, Feb. 13 afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Watson Methodist Church, Watson, Mo. with Pastor Bruce Jeffries officiating.
Memorials may be given to the Watson Methodist Church or the Hamburg Rescue.



Combs, Allen -

Mr. Allen Combs, 58, of Clarinda died Sunday, August 15,1993 at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born April 28,1935, near Gravity, the son of Glenn Allen and Ruby Lorene Peterman Combs. On December 26,1960 he was married to Mary Joan Dwyre, who survives. Mr. Combs had served in the Navy for 20 years and later worked at NSK as a machinist.
Survivors include his wife Mary Joan of the home and two children: Dwyne Combs, Clarinda and Mrs. Eric (Denise) Johnson, Des Moines. Sisters and brother include Carolyn Rodaway, Fremont, Ne; Marjorie Carlson, Stanton; Irene Brown, Omaha, Ne; and Dean Combs, Grand Island, Ne. Jean Combs of Blair, Ne, is a sister-in-law.
His mother, Ruby Combs, is residing in a nursing home in Valley, Ne. He was preceded in death by his father, brother Darrell and sister, Dorothy French.

Combs, Ruby L. Peterman -

Ruby L. Combs, 88, of Valley, Ne. died Friday morning, October 1, 1993 at Val Haven Care Center at Valley.
She was born March 27, 1905, near New Market, the daughter of Bert and Myrtle Slaight Peterman. On February 12,1924 she was married to Glenn A. Combs who preceded her in death January 9, 1960.
She had lived in the Clarinda, Burlington Junction, Mo. areas before going to Omaha. She has been in Valley, Ne. for the past six years.
She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Roy (Carolyn) Rodaway, Fremont, Ne.; Mrs. Marvin (Marjorie) Carlson, Stanton; Mrs. Charlie (Irene) Brown, Omaha, Ne.; one son, Dean Combs, Omaha, Ne.; sister, Gladys Newman, Clarinda, brother Ivan Peterman, Clarinda, 21 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband, daughter Dorothy French, two sons, Darrell Combs and Allen Combs, granddaughter Lana Holstein, sister Clarice McKay and brother Beryl Peterman.

Anna Mae Cowan, 79, of Elmo, Mo, diedSunday,September l9,1993, at Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda.
She was bom September 7, 1914 near Blanchard, the daughter of Will and Mae Bayles Twaddles.
She was married to Forrest (Bill) Cowan on October 2,1933. She was a housewife.
Surviving are her husband Bill of Elmo, one son, Marvin Cowan of Elmo, six grandchildren; brothers, Robert Twaddle of Albuquerque, NM, Glen Twaddle of Elmo, and Melvin Twaddle of California, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Elmo United Methodist Church with Rev. Mary Lou Keyser and Rev. Jerry Geisert officiating. Visitation will be at the Barr-Merrick Funeral Home in Burlington Junction, Mo, from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in the Lamar Cemetery at Elmo. Cowan, Forrest J. "Bill" -

Forrest J. "Bill" Cowan, 80, died Wednesday. October 13, 1993 at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
He was born October 31, 1912, at Tarkio, Mo. to Edward J. and Eva VanFosson Cowan. He married Anna Mae Twaddle, October 2, 1933 and she preceded him in death September 19,1993. He was a retired truck driver and mechanic.
Survivors include one son, Marvin Cowan, Elmo, Mo.: six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Cowan, Glenwood; two sisters, Faye Jones, Nebo, Mo. and Lula Hickman. Harve, Mt. and two half sisters, Helen Maust, New Albin and Dorothy Bockman, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister, one half sister, one half brother, a granddaughter and three great-granchildren.
Graveside services were Saturday, October 16, at 10:30 a.m at LaMar Cemetery, Elmo, Mo. Rev. Jerry Geisert clergyman.

Damewood, Doris Harland -

Mrs. Darrell (Doris) Damewood, 61, of Clarinda died Monday morning, August 23, 1993 at Jennie
Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs.          
Damewood was born February 4, 1932 near New Market, the daughter of Merle and Pauline Greeley Harland. On February 27,1951 she was married to Darrell Damewood who survives.
She was a member of the Hillside Missionary Church, organist for many activities and active in numerous community organizations including piano teacher, Farm Bureau, Gideon Auxiliary and 4-H.
Survivors include her husband Darrell of the home, two daughters Mrs. Arlan (Denise) Hoskins, Mitchell, SD, Mrs. Brian (Delora) Jamison, St. Joseph, Mo, and Douglas and wife Ana Damewood, Corona, Ca, five grandchildren, parents, Merle and Pauline Harland of Clarinda, brother, Max Harland of Perry.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 26, 1993 at Hillside Missionary Church with Rev. David Miller officiating. Burial was in Dallas Center cemetery at New Market. Dunshee, Jean Carolyn McCollough - Jean Dunshee, age 88, of Clarinda, Iowa, entered into peace Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Clarinda, Iowa with Pastor Deborah Boucher-Payne officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 5-7 p.m., Monday, March 3 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Southwest Iowa Humane Society, American Legion Sergy Post 98 Auxiliary or to the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Jean Carolyn McCollough, daughter of Ralph Perry and Helma Louise (Young) McCollough, was born on February 14, 1926 in Chariton, Iowa and passed away with her family surrounding her in Clarinda, Iowa February 25, 2014 at the age of 88 years and 11 days. She was not quite three years old when her family moved from the farm into town. During her youth she enjoyed tap dancing. While in high school she continued her love of the arts and involvement in music as a violinist in the school orchestra, graduating with the class of 1943. While in high school, she worked as a secretary in Gookin’s Insurance and Real Estate office and continued employment there following graduation before joining the office staff at Iowa Southern Utilities. She married Arthur Allen Dunshee January 23, 1946 and continued her employment while Art completed his education at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. The young couple’s first move was to Atlantic, Iowa in 1947 before making their home in Clarinda, Iowa in 1949, along with their growing family.

While Art was working at establishing a retail business career, Jean’s greatest joy in life was being a devoted, supportive wife and a loving, caring, and nurturing mother to their seven children. She was an excellent homemaker taking great pride in providing a home, not only well maintained and decorated, but a welcoming home filled with warmth and love. Her family and friends were the recipients of her outstanding baking and culinary skills including homemade breads, rolls, pies, and delicious meals. Jean enjoyed playing the guitar and her family has fond memories of spontaneous get-togethers when friends enjoying singing and harmonizing. She enjoyed drawing and painting and was a talented charcoal portrait artist. Jean was a seamstress who could sew a dress for a dance, a Halloween costume, or whatever was needed for her family, and often times, without a pattern. She liked to upholster and had numerous needlework hobbies, with knitting and crocheting being two of her favorites. Jean had a great interest in genealogy and especially enjoyed the research. As a busy wife and mother, Jean was actively involved and was a faithful member of her church, her community, her children’s activities, and volunteering her services when needed at her children’s schools.

Art and Jean owned Art’s Shoes on the south side of the square in Clarinda which Art operated for twenty-seven years. With their family about grown, she worked full time in the shoe store for over ten years, until their retirement in October 1983. During their retirement years she cherished time with family. The holidays took on special meaning with the family reunions; and the grandchildren delighted in all these occasions. Jean volunteered for the R.S.V.P. group, Glen Miller Days, the Nodaway Valley Museum, and delivered Meals-On-Wheels. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Jean will be remembered by her family and friends for her strong faith in God, her kindness, her inner strength, creativity and intelligence, sense of humor, infectious laugh, beautiful smile, her love for all God’s creatures, her fairness and integrity, and a life lived by the Golden Rule.

Left to cherish her memory are seven children: Linda (Dennis) Nissen of Griswold, Iowa, Leslie Dunshee and Calvin (Fran) Dunshee of Ames, Iowa: Carolyn Tharp of Des Moines, Iowa: Charles Dunshee of Clarinda, Iowa: Anita VonDielingen of Atlantic, Iowa: Lisa Whitehill (Terry Kinman) of Clarinda, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren: Angela (Douglas) Britton of Washington D. C.; Brian Dunshee of Ames, Iowa; Elizabeth Dunshee of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Heather Tharp (Brett Spohr) of Des Moines, Iowa; Amber Tharp, and Nathan Tharp of Des Moines, Iowa; Eric (Aimee) VonDielingen of Denver, Colorado; Kristi VonDielingen (Derek Story) of Fort Benning, Georgia; Ryan VonDielingen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Alexa Whitehill of Ames, Iowa, Andrew Whitehill of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Aaron Whitehill of Clarinda, Iowa; Stephanie (Riley) Christie and Shelby Kinman of Clarinda, Iowa; six great grandchildren: Daniel and Dexter Britton of Washington D. C.; Kaden and Caroline Tharp of Des Moines, Iowa, Dom and Rem Story of Georgia and her cat Pedie Poo, her faithful companion in her later years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Art Dunshee; two son-in-laws: Dwayne Zimmerman and Gary Tharp; one brother and sister-in-law Donald (Edna) McCollough of Chariton, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leta (Harry) Miller, George (Mayme) Dunshee, Helen (Gordon) Savee, Vada (James) Smith, Evelyn (Mick ) Weidman, Robert Dunshee, and Ralph Hixson.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law; Flora Belle Hixson of Chariton, Iowa; Helen Dunshee of Palmyra, Wisconsin, and nieces and nephews.

The family of Jean expresses thanks and appreciation for the good care, kindness and compassion while she was a patient at the Clarinda Regional Health Center and to Dr. Anuj Wadhwa, and Dr. Gerard Stanley, Sr., Heartland Home Health and Hospice staff, and the staff at Goldenrod Manor while she received care in the Hospice room

 

Eilers, Lena M. Geer -

Lena M. Eilers, 86, of Clarinda died Monday, September 13, 1993 at Municipal Hospital in Clarinda after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 16, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarinda. Burial was in Summit Cemetery near Yorktown.
She was bom April 14, 1907, near Yorktown, the daughter of Fred L. and Meta Spangenberg Geer Sr.
She was married to Harold H. Eilers on September 25,1929 at St. John's Parsonage. Eilers had been an aide at Municipal Hospital for seven years and worked for Dr. Comeau for 11 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Jack (Dorothy) Miller, Clarinda, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth) Stone, Stanton, Mrs. Donald (Janet) Hill, Clarinda, six grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and two brothers, Walter and William Geer, both of Clarinda.

Elrod, Nellie Walker -

Nellie Elrod, 88, died October 1, 1993 at the Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda.
She was born August 21, 1905 to William Marcellus and Dora Ellen Golay Walker at Clearmont, Mo. In 1931 she married Cecil Bert Elrod at Shenandoah. They lived in Elmo in the 1930s and 1940s where she was a telephone operator. In the 1950s they moved to Clarinda then to Glenwood and Council Bluffs. After the death of her husband she lived in Thurman and Tabor.
Survivors include daughters Mrs. Ora (Dora Loy) Smith, Jr., Tabor; Mrs. C.E. (Lois Joan) Lekey, Shenandoah; one son, Donald Grant Elrod, Randolph; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Iva May) Whipp, Wichita, Ks. and Irene Marie Fults, Clarinda.

Mildred Matilda Thomas Erzinger, 93, died September 29, 1993 at Burbank, Ca.
She was born February 20, 1900 near Hepburn to John W. and Mary C. (Warner) Thomas. She attended grade school at William's School, Valley Township and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1918. She taught school at Douglas Township #4, until going to Davenport, where she resumed teaching.
She married Ernest Erzinger of Silvis,Il. in l923.They later moved to Milton and then to Torrington, Wy.
where they were in the bakery business. They later retired to California.

She is survived by a son Kenneth Erzinger, Burbank, Ca.; one grandson; sisters, Christine Gould of Silvis, II., Mary Louise James of Omaha, Ne., Laura Stohlmann of Louisville, Ne., and Muriel Maddox of Lincoln, Ne.

Mrs. Hattie J. Foster. 84, of Clarinda. formerly of St. Joseph, Mo. died Saturday night,October 16,1993 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda.
She was born February 8,1909, in Andrew County, Mo., the daughterof Joseph and Ora Mabel Benning Milbourne. Mrs. Foster lived in St. Joseph prior to moving to Clarinda 14 years ago.
She is survived by two children; Mrs. Ralph (Helen) Furst, Clarinda and Leonard Foster, Tacoma, Wa. There are two grandchildren and six great-granchildren. She was preceded in death by parents and three sisters.
Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Monday evening at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Joseph, Mo.

Esther Freudenburg, 83, died Ocotber 7, 1993 in Glendale, Ca. where she had been a resident for twenty-three years.
She was born January 21,1910 in St. Francis, Ks. On June 24,1933 she married Carl E. Freudenburg of Clarinda.
Survivors include one son, Curtis and his wife Sue of Bay City, Mi.; one daughter, Rebecca Freudenburg, of Glendale, Ca.; two grandchildren; two brothers, Herman Niermeier and wife Edna of Hoxie, Ks. and Earle Niermeier of Atwood, Ks.; two sister-in-laws Delia Holle Niermeier of San Francisco, Ca. and Anna Freudenburg of Clarinda.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl in 1975; one brother Harvey Niermeier in 1990.
Graveside services were held Monday, October 11, 1993 at Immanuel cemetery with Rev. Ken Lampe officiating. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Goudie, Melvin -

Melvin Goudie, 67, of Clarinda, died Monday afternoon, October 18, 1993 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs.
He was born January 15, 1926 at Gravity, the son of Paul and Bernyce Cole Goudie. He was in the Navy in WW II. On January 7, 1946 he was married to Marcelene Freemyer who survives. He was a trucker and a farmer. Mr. and Mrs. Goudie lived in Clarinda for the past two years. Prior to that they lived on a farm southwest of Clarinda and had lived in Taylor County.
He is survived by his wife Marcelene of the home and two sons: Hal and wife Betsy Goudie, Clarinda and Steve and wife Pat Goudie of Clarinda; brothers: Donald Goudie, El Centro, Ca.; Wendell Goudie, Boulder City, Nv. and Gordon Goudie, Palm Desert, Ca. There are four grandchildren. His grandmother is Effie Cole from Bedford.
He was preceded in death by parents, daughter Connie and sister Doris Jean.

Griggs, Creola Baker -

Mrs. Creola B. Griggs, 80 of Clarinda died Thursday morning, July 15, 1993 at her home in Clarinda. Griggs was a lifelong resident of Clarinda, born March 6, 1913, the daughter of Edward and Katheryn Anderson Baker.
She was married to Merril Griggs who preceded her in death. Griggs was employed at MHI before her retirement. She had also done catering work for many families in Clarinda.
Griggs was active in many organizations including the First Christian Church, Hospital Auxilary, American Legion Auxilary and BPW.
She is survived by a son Kenneth Griggs of Germany, 4 grandchildren, one sister Maxine Griggs and son-in-law Bill Weber of Clarinda. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, daughter Marilyn Weber and sisters Addalean and Bettye.

Hackett, Marian E. Williams - Graveside services, following cremation will be held at a future date this summer at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah.

Marian E. Hackett, daughter of Olive G. (Russell) and William W. Williams was born July 2, 1920 in Coin, Iowa, and died on February 22, 2014 in Gilbert, Arizona, following a brief illness at the age of 93.

Marian grew up in Coin, where she graduated from Coin High School. She was united in marriage with Fred N. Hackett on December 22, 1940. Following their marriage they made their home in Shenandoah except for a short period of time when they lived in Mesa, Arizona, where Fred was stationed with the U S Army Air Corps during World War II.

In June of 1951 Fred and Marian opened the Hackett Funeral Home, which they operated until retiring in 1978. To be near her family she moved to Mesa Arizona in 2005.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Altrusa Club, Business and Professional Women, Meta Grada Club and PEO Chapter JA of Iowa.

Preceding her in Death were her parents, two brothers, Erskine "Turk" Williams and Ivan "Brownie" Williams, One sister, Genevieve James and her husband Fred in 1990,

She is survived by her son Fred Hackett, Jr. and his wife Ginger of Gilbert, AZ, two granddaughters: Shawnette and Heather, and six great grandchildren: Emma, Riley, Maxwell, Brody, Charlie and Evan

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa, for John A. Harris of Shenandoah. A prayer service was held at Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah Wednesday evening, February 28, at 6:30 p.m. followed by a visitation from 7-8 p.m. Interment will be made in the Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Hackett Funeral Home of Shenandoah.
John A. Harris, age 65, lived most of his life in the Shenandoah and Tarkio areas. He attended country school at Locust Grove School. On September 15, 1951, he was united in marriage to Mildred Zirfas at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Tarkio.
John served his country during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. After returning from Korea, John worked as a farm laborer in the Tarkio area until 1974 when he moved to Shenanodah. In Shenandoah, he worked at Shaw Implement Co. until 1981, after which he worked for a hog confinement facility near Imogene, Iowa, before his health began to fail in 1984, forcing him to retire.
John was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah as well as a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Tarkio. He was also a member of the AMVET's and V.F.W.
Survivors include: John's wife, Mildred, of Shenandoah; one daughter, Jackie Hodge, of Shenandoah; three grandchildren, Treavor, Stacy and Richard, all of Shenandoah; three brothers, Lee Roy Harris of Vacaville, California, Robert Harris of Coin, Iowa, and Kenneth (Junior) Harris of Illinois; and mother, Laura Harris of Shenandoah. Family memorial services were held Friday, August 13, for Bette Henderson, 68, of Potosi, Wi. She
died August 10,1993 at her home.
She was born May 3,1925,at Coin to Ivan and Viva Barret Vermule. She graduated from high school at Blanchard. On May 3,1941, she married Harry Henderson at the Methodist church in Rockport, Mo. She and her husband moved to Platteville, Wi, in 1948. They spent 20 years on overseas assignments, living in the Middle East, Africa and Europe.
Henderson is survived by her husband, three sons, Lonny at Racine, Wi, Randy of Cedar Rapids and Jeffrey of Platteville, Wi; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; sister, Delores Rice of Phoenix, Az. Her mother, Viva Pearson, resides in Clarinda.

Florence Henke, 83, of Clarinda died Tuesday, October 5,1993 at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
She was born on October 5,1910 in Page County, the daughter of John and Clara Hilbert Rausch. She was baptized October 6,1910 at Immanuel Lutheran Church and confirmed June 8,1924 at St. John's Lutheran Church. On October21,1937 she was married to Albert Henke who survives. They farmed in the Clarinda area until 1977 when they moved to Clarinda.
She is survived by her husband Albert, three children: Marilyn Hartig, Fort Collins, Co.; Robert Henke, Clarinda; Luci Gunderson, Superior, Wi.; nine grandchildren, two great­grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Clarence and Gilbert.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 9,1993 at 10 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarinda with Rev. Ray Weber officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda cemetery. Visitation was held Friday, October 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel.

Hockett, Delbert D. -

Funeral services for Delbert D. Hockett, 71, of Clarinda will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. John Clark and Phil Jorgensen officiating.
Mr. Hockett died Wednesday evening, June 28,1989 at Municipal Hospital.
He was born Aug. 4, 1917 at Armstrong, la, the son of Otha Miller and Blanche Housemen Hockett.
Mr. Hockett was a truck driver and worked on road construction.
He was married to Lucille Porter on Nov. 3,1952.

Mr. and Mrs. Hockett had lived in Clarinda since August 1988.
Survivors include  his wife Lucille of the home, and children:  Mrs. Clifford (Janet) Clabaugh, Hesperia, Ca, Mrs. Melvin (Beverly) Whitacre, Council Bluffs, Robert Hockett, Estherville, and step son, Douglas Higgins, Clarinda. Former Clarinda resident, Wanda Holmes, 69, died Monday, August 30,1993. She lived in Denver, Colorado.
Her parents Harry and Hazel Smith and her husband Jim Holmes, preceded her in death.
Survivors include five children, eleven grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Four brothers, Everett (Bus) Smith of Gilbert, Az; Ken and Jack Smith of Clarinda and Ronald Smith, Sequim, Wa. Darrell and Ruth Holmes and Jackie Holmes, of Clarinda, nieces and nephews.

John Leo Hughes, 64, of Red Oak died Wednesday, August 11, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born December 26,1928 in Fremont County, the son of Leo and Lucille Hughes. He attended school in Imogene and graduated from St. Patrick's Academy at Imogene.
He married Phyllis Maca on June 17, 1952 in Imogene. Hughes worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission for over 25 years, both in Shenandoah and the past 18 years in Red Oak. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his children, Lee Hughes of Clarinda, Linda Reed of Minneapolis, Mn, Debbie Edwards of Plattsburgh, NY, Nancy Ehlers and Paula Woods, both of Bentonville, Ar, Chris Hughes and Matt Hughes both of Red Oak, Geri Kester of Emerson, Bruce Hughes of Bowie, Md, Monica Cole of Glenwood and Bart Hughes of Bella Vista, Ar.
He is also survived by 31 grand­children and his mother, Mrs. Lucille Hughes of Shenandoah, two brothers, Joe Hughes of Imogene and Jude Hughes of Essex, and two sisters, Mary Ditmars of Maryville, Mo, and Irene Maca of Columbus, Ne. He was preceded in death by his father Leo, brother Billy and grand­daughter Malyssa.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Oak with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak. Rosary services were held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Nelson-Boylan Funeral Chapel in Red Oak followed by visitation.

Hull, Kenneth -

Graveside services are to be at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 4, at Maple Hill Cemetery, College Springs, for Kenneth Hull, 64. He died on September 1,1993, at St. John's Regional Hospital in Springfield, Mo, after a lengthy illness.
Hull was bom October 18,1928 in Shenandoah, to Clarence and Marie AdkinsHull. He was raised in Southwest Iowa, where he met and married his wife of 43 years, Lois Blanche Smith.
After a career of farming in Iowa, he moved to Springfield, Mo, then to Skidmore, where he was known as "a pioneer and leader" in the bootheel's farm-equpiment auction industry.
In 1979, he purchased Cross Tractor Salvage in Lamar, Mo. In 1985, he moved to Willard, where he limited his business to selling certain pieces of equipment until 1986, when an unexplained spinal condition paralyzed him below the rib cage. Working from his wheel chair, he started a business to manufacture bumper-hitch trailers that is now under the direction of his wife and four of his children.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 3, at Praise Assembly of God Church in Springfield.

Survivors include his wife, Blanche, daughters Diane Kay (Standridge) and Marilyn Jannette Hull; sons Harvey H., Jerald Kenneth and Darrin Lynn; children by marriage, Terry Standridge, Karen, Doris and Lisa Hull; seven grandchildren; brother Dean Hull of Braddyville; and sisters Edwena Morrow, College Springs, and Velda Mae Anderson, West Des Moines. James H. Hutt, 72, born June 24, 1921, at Blanchard, to Charles J. and Viola Sherwood Hutt, died Tuesday, August 24, 1993 at the St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 27, at 10 a.m. at Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel, Burlington Junction, Mo. Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday, August 26, from 7-8 p.m. Burial will be at the Blanchard cemetery.
He was a retired well driller and worked for Lane Well Drilling at Blanchard. He was a graduate of Blanchard High School and served with the U.S. Army during World War II in England.     
Survivors include a son, David Hutt, Norwich, England; three daughters Jackie Henry, Burlington Junction, Mo; Marie Farmer, Coin; Kim Walters, Crocker, Mo; three brothers Harold Hutt, Liberty, Mo; Kenneth Hutt, Pomona, Ca; Jack Hutt, Maryville, Mo; a sister, Thelma Brand, Yakima, Wa; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Robert Harold Johnson died August 12,1993 in Las Vegas, Nv. Burial was in the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Co.
Johnson was bom July 28, 1949, the son of Roscoe and Evamarie Johnson. He graduated from Clarinda High School in 1967 and from a mechanic school in Omaha. He served a tour of duty in Viet Nam with the U.S. Army. After returning from the army, he settled in Denver, Co, where he met his wife. They resided there until a year ago when they moved to Las Vegas.
He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Jones, Helen M. Lawson -

Helen M. Jones, who served as Page County Auditor from 1964 through 1978, died Saturday at her home in Iowa City following a sudden Illness.
Mrs. Jones was born October 27, 1913 in Yorktown to Henry and Anna Elizabeth Lawson.
She was married to Eldon Jones October, 26,1935 in Maryville. The couple farmed until 1945 after which Helen served as Deputy Page County Recorder from 1947 to 1964. She served as Page County Recorder from 1964 until she retired in 1978. While in Clarinda, she was a member of the First Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She moved to Iowa City in November 1992.
Survivors include one son. Richard Jones; three grandchildren: six greatgrandchildren; three brothers, Harold Lawson of Des Moines, Robert Lawson of Clarinda, William Lawson of Victor, la; and one sister, Francis Mitchell of Portland, Or. She is preceded in death by two brothers.
Funeral Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Callahan Funeral Home in Iowa City with Rev. Nancy English officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Graveside services will be at a later date in the Baker Cemetary in Norwich, la.

Helen Jones, whose funeral was held in Iowa City Wednesday, served as Page County Recorder, not auditor, as stated in Monday's Herald-Journal. She was deputy recorder from 1947 to 1964, and served as recorder from 1964 until she retired in 1978. Jones, 79, moved to Iowa City to be near her son in November of 1992. Graveside services for 73 year old Robert "Bob" Joseph Keeler of Bigelow, Missouri, were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2007, in the Clarinda Cemetery in Clarinda. Pastor Scott Denham officiated the service. Bob passed away Sunday, April 8 at Fairfax Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri. Memorials may be directed to the family. Robert "Bob" Joseph Keeler was born on March 5, 1934, in New Market to Ellsworth Carroll and Bertha Irene (Stiverson) Keeler. Bob attended country schools in the Clarinda and New Market area. He was self-employed working as a mechanic, welder, farmer, locksmith and doing carpentry work.
Bob is survived by daughter Beverly and husband Benny Wardlow of Fort Dodge; daughter Carolyn Keeler of Des Moines; son Robert Jr. and wife Malena Keeler of Shenandoah; daughter Janice and husband Dean Thompson of Shambaugh; son Ronald and wife Kay Waggoner of Clarinda; daughter Judy and husband Melvin Wardlow of Havelock; son Randy and wife Stacey Keeler of Bigelow, Missouri; daughter Pamela Keeler of LaMars; sister Norma Bramen of Burlington Junction, Missouri; sister Marie and husband Richard Bramen of Shenandoah; brother Dwayne and wife Donna Keeler of Gravity; brother Darroll Keeler of Olathe, Kansas; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews and other relatives. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Violet Keeler in 1989, sister Louise Keeler, brother Darwin Dean Keeler, and two grandchildren Steven Dean Hoyt and Kile-Lee Brown.

Violet May Keller, 53 of Bigelow, Mo, died Monday, June 26, 1989, at the Fairfax Community Hospital in Fairfax, Mo, where she had been a patient since May 18. She was born Jan. 30, 1936 in Bethany, Mo. Her parents were Franklin John and Bessie (Stevens) Gardner. She was married to Robert Keeler on May 8,1954 in Clarinda.  
She had worked as a nurses aid at the Tiffiany Heights Nursing Home in Mound City, Mo, until her illness.
Survivors include her husband of the home and eight children. Mrs. Benny (Beverly) Wardlow of Havelock, la, Mrs. Dan (Carolyn) Schwaube of Osceola, Robert Keeler Jr. of Shenandoah, Mrs. Gary (Janice) Moss of Clarinda, Ronald Waggoner of Bedford, Mrs. Melvin (Judy) Wardlow of Havelock, Randy Keeler and Pam Keeler of the home in; Bigelow, Mo. Kirsch, Harold E. - Harold E. Kirsch was born June 28, 1926 in Daykin, Nebraska, the son of Fred Carl and Emma Augusta (Lackner) Kirsch. He passed away on Wednesday evening, February 26, 2014 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center in Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 7 months and 29 days.
Harold attended school through the seventh grade. On March 12, 1950 he was united in marriage to Verla May Long at the Immanuel Lutheran Parsonage near Clarinda, Iowa. This union was blessed by four children, Daniel, Glen, Linda and William. Verla preceded him in death in 2004. On May 22, 2005 he was married to Norma Jean Cleaver in Clarinda, Iowa. She passed away on September 13, 2008.
Harold worked at the State Hospital Milk Barn for 13 years from 1952 to 1965. He later worked for Lange’s Dairy for six years and was the Sexton of the Clarinda Cemetery from 1972 until 1976. In 1976 Harold went to work for NSK until his retirement in 1988.He also set cemetery tents for the local funeral homes for many years. In 1968 he started driving the ambulance. In 1971 he took the EMT class with his son Glen and then continued driving the ambulance for several years. Harold loved the outdoors, whether it was mowing a yard, plowing a garden or pushing snow in the winter, you could always find him on his tractor. He loved family gatherings and his grandchildren and great grandchildren were the true joys of his life.

Duane Landhuis, 54, of Stanton, died Wednesday morning, September 29, 1993 at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born October 30, 1938, near Leota, Mn, the son of Henry and Marie Bolluyt Landhuis. He was married to Beverlyn Schoolmeester on August 9,1963. He received his Masters Degree from the University of South Dakota. He was an employee of Lisle Corporation in Clarinda.
Survivors include his wife Beverlyn of the home and two children: Mrs. Alan (Belinda) DeBolt, Shenandoah and Bradley Landhuis of Clarinda. Brothers are Nelson, Howard and Joe Landhuis of Leota, Mn.; Henry Landhuis of Des Moines; Marinus Landhuis of Denver, Co. and one sister, Marie Rave of Norfolk, Ne.
He was preceded in death by parents and a sister-in-law, Gladys Landhuis.

Elner E. Larson, 89, of Villisca, died Friday, September 3, 1993 at Good Samartian Nursing Home in Villisca. He had been a resident of the care center for nearly two years.
Larson was born February 3, 1904, near Nyman, the son of Frank and Anna Johnson Larson. On December 24,1927 he was married to Frances James. The couple farmed all of their married lives.
Survivors include his wife Frances of Villisca, two daughters Mrs. Frank (Catherine Lucille) Froyd, Denver, Co, and Mrs. Mary Ruth Black of Des Moines, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joe (Margaret) Shipley of Nodaway, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephew and cousins.
His parents, a son Everett Elner, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Ivan (Bud) Larson, 77, of Clarinda died at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Friday, September 24, 1993.
He was born March 16, 1916 at Hepburn, the son of Louie and Elzie (Thomas) Larson. He was married to Patsy Howard on July 7, 1981.
Survivors include wife Patsy of the home; daughters Mrs. Jack (Christine) Baker of Clarinda, Mrs. Roger (Tonia) Foster, of Clarinda and Mrs. Ted (Sonia) Edwards of Clarinda. There are seven stepchildren, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Other survivors include brothers Ralph Larson, Clarinda, John Larson, Bedford and sisters Beatrice Smith, Bedford, Mrs. Albert (Idle) Spencer of Bedford, and Mrs. Norman (Juanita) Hawn of Bedford.
Graveside services were held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Oak Grove Cemetery near Clarinda. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Larson, Verlin Duane - Verlin Duane Larson passed away peacefully on February 28, 2014, at age 83 surrounded by his family at the Clarinda Regional Health Center in Clarinda, Iowa.

Verlin was born on November 16, 1930 in northern Page County, Iowa, the third of nine children of Herby and Lillie (Johnson) Larson. He attended country schools around Hawleyville and New Market, and graduated from New Market High School in 1949. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1951-1953, then returned to open and operate Larson Lockers in New Market for 17 years with two of his brothers. During his working years Verlin also managed the New Market Super grocery store, farmed, did plumbing, insulating & electrical jobs; worked for the New Market lumber yard, and finally as a Taylor County road maintenance operator before retiring.

He was very active in community service, including President of the New Market school board, President of the Civic Club, Cub Scout leader, town council, American Legion, 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, and numerous positions in the New Market Church of Christ, including Sunday school teacher, deacon and treasurer. Verlin loved hunting, fishing, and working the family farm.

He married Shirley (McAlpin) Larson on September 2, 1954; Verlin was very proud that they had been married for 59 years. They raised four children: Randy Larson and his wife, Janet, reside in Merrimac, Massachusetts; Mark Larson and his wife, Terri, of Magnolia, Texas; Tim Larson and his wife, Angie, of New Market, and Amy (Larson) Skeries and her husband, Alex, of Cedar Rapids.

Also left to cherish his memory are three brothers: Merrill and wife, Harryette, and Lyndall and wife, Joyce, of New Market; and Darwin and wife, Sharon, in Fargo, ND; five grandchildren: Joe and Mashel Larson of New Market, Nicole Larson in Magnolia, Texas; Shane Elliff and wife, Brooke, of Magnolia, Texas, and Ryan Elliff and wife, Jenny, and their children Rylie & Ezra, of Silsbee, Texas, plus many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Verlin was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Ruby (Larson) Wilson and Donna (Larson) Hill; and by three brothers: Bradley, Dallas and Gary.
Funeral services will be conducted at the New Market Church of Christ on March 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. A visitation will be held at the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda on March 2nd from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Memorial tributes can be made to the Verlin D. Larson Memorial Fund.

Verlin was a husband, brother, grandfather and loyal friend to many people. To his four children, he was more than just a father; he was our friend and our hero. We always admired our dad and had a great deal of respect for him. He will continue to be with us and inspire us for the rest of our lives. Rest in Peace, Dad

 

Laverty, Lois A. Whitney -

Lois A. Laverty, 67, of New Market died Wednesday, July 28,1993 at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital.
She was born November 22,1925 at Minneapolis, Mn, the daughter of Thomas and Francena Castle Whitney. On May 29,1949 she was married to Kenneth Laverty, who preceded her in death March 1,1981.
Laverty was a teacher for 34 years before her retirement in 1988. She had taught in Manning, Albion, Bedford, New Market and Clarinda. Her husband Kenneth had been school superintendent at New Market.
She had been active in the New Market United Methodist Church, Clarinda OES and Past Matrons when living at Manning. She was also a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, past president of Southwest Iowa Reading Council and life member of the National Education Association.

She is survived by a son, Brian Laverty of Phoenix, Az; a daughter, Julie Laverty of Overland Park, Ks; a brother, Grant Whitney of Clarinda. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother Hugh.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Visitation will be at Walker Merrick Funeral home from 7-8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Summitt Cemetery at Yorktown.

June (Ernst) Litsch of Utica, Mi, died June 26,1989, at a hospital in Rochester Hills, Mi.
She was born May 17, 1919 in Clarinda, the daughter of Lyman Ernst and Lucretia (Douglas) Ernst. On June 11, 1939, she was married to O.D. Litsch at Savannah, Mo. She was a retired teacher, having taught 30 years. She was a 1937 graduate of Clarinda High School and Wayne State University in Detroit, Mi. She was a member of the Methodist Church and Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.
Survivors include her husband, O.D. and a son, James of Liberty, Mo.

Martin, Evelyn Fleming - Evelyn Fleming Martin, 87, a previous resident of Clarinda, died in Phoenix, Az on August 14, 1993.
She was born in Wheaton, Ill. June 25, 1906 but the family moved to College Springs when she was very young. She married Rex S. Martin in 1937, after working for the Clarinda Light and Power Company for several years. Her husband, who was injured in an accident and was paraplegic, died in 1971.
The Martins, along with their son Richard, moved to San Diego and then to Phoenix in the 1950s where they made their home for the next 43 years.    
She was a member of Royal Palms Baptist Church, as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution, Delta Gamma Sorority, Freedom Foundation and the Sun City Geneological Society.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Richard Martin, two grandchildren and two brothers, Ray Fleming of Des Moines and Howlend Fleming of Portland, Or.

Walt W. McCall, 80, of Clarinda died at his home Tuesday, August 3, 1993 after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 6 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Mr. McCall was a farmer until 1964 when he opened the McCall Lumber Yard in Clarinda.
He married Artie Luna who preceded him in death February 1, 1988. On February 15, 1991 he was married to Gladys Burright who survives. Milleson, Merrill L. -

Merrill L. Milleson, 70, of Clarinda died Monday, July 5,1993 at Sunwood Care Facility in Redwood Falls, Mn, where he had been a resident since March.
He was born September 4, 1922 at Clarinda, Ia , the son of Pearl C. and Marie Allen Milleson. He was a veteran of World War II. On May 10, 1946 he was married to Helen Bain who preceded him in death October 26, 1979. Milleson was a mail carrier for the postal service for 28 years.
Survivors include two sons, Steven Milleson, Des Moines and Terry Milleson, Redwood Falls, Mn. There are three grandchildren and one brother, Lloyd Milleson of Clarinda. Mrs. Edna Bain of Clarinda is his mother-in-law.

Dorothy Irene Neal, 80, of Red Oak, died Friday, July 9,1993 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Red Oak.
Born February 22, 1913 in Clearmont, Mo, she was the daughter of George and Virginia (Lawrence) Bishop. She married Harry Neal on November 5,1932 in Maryville, Mo. They lived and farmed in Page County, Iowa before moving to Red Oak in 1964.
She worked at the Holiday Inn and at the Murphy Memorial Hospital for several years. She attended the Nishna Church of Christ.
Neal was preceded in death by her parents, husband and granddaughter, Melissa Neal.
Survivors include her son Larry Neal and wife Margaret of Red Oak, daughter Janice Neal of Red Oak, three grandchildren and six great­grandchildren; also two sisters, Fae Pittam of Clarinda and Georgia Mae Neal of Stanton.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 12, at Nelson-Boylan Funeral Chapel with burial at the College Springs Cemetery in College Springs. Nelson-Boylan Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Nishna Church of Christ Building Fund.

Owen was born October 14,1917 at Clarinda, the son of George and Lois Parker Owen. He died Saturday, August 21, 1993, at the Municipal Hospital after a brief illness.
On July 8,1951, he was married to Thelma Scholes, who preceded him in death April 23,1972. Owen was a bookkeeper at Lisle Corporation before his retirement.

Treva A. Pearson, 74, of Indianola, died of cancer Saturday, Oct. 1,1994, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
She was born in Clarinda and had lived in Indianola for 48 years. She was a self-employed cake decorator and was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church, VFW Auxiliary and Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Zingg and Karen Stumpf, both of Des Moines; a sister, Ruth Cade of Brighton, Co.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Verla McCoy; her husband; son; two brothers; and a sister.
Services were Oct. 5, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Des Moines.

Perkins, Madalene R. McDermott - Jul 11, 1919 - Mar 2, 2014 -Madalane passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Red Oak, Iowa. Hackett Livinston Funeral Home, Shenandoah, Iowa.

Madalene Rose Perkins was born July 11, 1919, near Farragut, Iowa the daughter of Ralph and E. Gertrude (Johnson) McDermott. Madalene passed away March 2, 2014 in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 94 years, 7 months and 19 days.
She grew up on a farm in Fremont County, Iowa and attended several rural elementary schools and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1937. Following graduation she worked at Mount Arbor Nurseries for a short period of time.
On June 20, 1939 she was united in marriage to Thomas N. Perkins at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. In this union seven children were born Thomas, Jr., John, Paul, Leo, Richard, Mary Rose, and Rita. After their marriage they were farmers in Montgomery, Mills, Page and Fremont counties. Madalene was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, and oil painting.
Madalene was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, infant son Thomas, Jr., parents Ralph and E. Gertrude McDermott, brothers Ernest and JR McDermott, sisters Irma Dinville and Lucile King, daughter-in-law Sharon (Anderson) Perkins, grandson-in-law Jeff Wheelbarger, brothers-in-law George Dinville and Dale King, and sister-in-law Viola McDermott.

Lois E. Pollock, 89, of Clarinda died Saturday night, September 18, 1993, at Goldenrod Manor, where she had been for the past three months.
She was born October 22, 1903, near College Springs, the daughter of William and Luna Cuttell Turner. She grew up and attended school in College Springs and later taught in a rural school. On October 12, 1925 she was married to Frank Pollock, who preceded her in death May 13,1988.
Mrs. Pollock was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank, two children, Maurice and Marilyn Tracy; brother Marvin and sister Emma.
She is survived by a sister, Freda Parker of Berkeley, Ca; a brother, Dallas Turner of Walnut Creek, Ca; son-in-law, Ken Tracy of Omaha; daughter-in-law, Janice Wheeler of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Beth Turner of Pensacola, Fl; and three grandchildren.

Rankin, Frances May -

Funeral services were held at l p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 1996, at the First Congregational Church in Shenandoah, Iowa, for Frances Rankin of Shenandoah. Services were under the direction of Hackett Funeral Home of Shenandoah. Frances Rankin, age 78, passed away Saturday, February 17, 1996, at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah where she had resided since 1993. She was born at Shenandoah on April 28, 1917, to Gertrude (Welch) and Earl May. Frances was raised in Shenandoah, graduating from Shenandoah High School. After high school, she attended National Park Seminary, an all women's college at Washington, DC, later attending Northwestern University.
On June 23, 1939, Frances was united in marriage to J. D. Rankin, Jr., in Shenandoah. Mrs. Rankin was a lifelong resident of Shenandoah, except during World War II when she lived in Memphis, Tennessee, and Chicago, Illinois, where her husband was stationed.
Frances was not only involved in the Earl May Seed and Nursery Company and May Broadcasting as an officer, serving as Chairman of the Board until 1993, but also was involved in many other activities in the community. She was a very active member of the First Congregational Church. She was an active and involved member of the Greater Shenandoah Historical Society, serving on its board of directors. She also was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, Order of Eastern Star, P.E.O, Study Club, and D.A.R. She loved to play bridge and was a member of many bridge clubs and was an avid golfer.
Survivors include: two daughters, Betty Jane Shaw and husband, Bill, and Diane Kidd and husband, John, all of Shenandoah; four grandchildren, Gordon Sherman and wife, Kris, Shenandoah, Melinda Driskell and husband, Damon, Adams, Nebraska,and Jordan and Jerod Kidd of Shenandoah; two great­grandchildren, Cassandra Driskell and Alexandra Sherman; a brother, Edward May, Sr., Tucson, Arizona; other relatives; and a host of friends. Mary Lorene Reece, 92, formerly of Coin,died Tuesday, July 20, 1993, at Garden View Care Center where she had been a resident since January of 1989.
Funeral services for Reece will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Coin United Methodist Church. The Rev. Gerald Allsup will officiate and interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery. A memorial to the Coin United Methodist Church is being established. Open visitation will be at the Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah.
Reece, the daughter of Robert Addison and Celeste (Michael) Sallee, was born September 9,1900 at Blanchard, Iowa. She grew up in the rural Blanchard community and received her education at the Victor School.
In 1928 she was united in marriage with Walter H. Reece. They lived and farmed in the Coin and Blanchard area until 1961 when they moved into Coin.
She was a member of the Coin United Methodist Church and enjoyed making personal calls for the church. She was also active in the United Methodist Women and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Elite Club.
Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Burdette Sallee; one sister, Carrie Speakman; one grandson Tom Reece; and her husband, Walter on June 20,1986.

Max Richardson, 73, of Clarinda, formerly of Tarkio, Mo, died Friday at his home in Clarinda.
He was bom July 5.1920 at Hamburg [Iowa] to Neal K. and Lemma Findley Richardson. He was a 1938 graduate of Hamburg High School and a veteran of World War II. serving in the U.S. Army overseas.
Richardson owned and operated his own heavy equipment business in Tarkio for many years before moving to Clarinda in 1982. He was the manager of the Page County Landfill until retiring in 1991.
He was preceded in death by an infant son Randy and one sister, Hazel Barnhart.
Survivors include one son, Ricky M. Richardson of Clarinda; one daughter, Roxanne (Mrs; John) Mayger of Muncy, Pa; one brother, Boyd Richardson of Hamburg; five sisters, Neva Matthews, Velma Smith. Doris Ryan, all of Hamburg, Maxine Douglas of Los Angeles, Ca, and Clara Welch of Portland, Or, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Services are to be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Davis Funeral Home at Tarkio. The family will receive friends there Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. Burial is to be at the Tarkio Home Cemetery. Robertson, Howard J. -

Howard J. Robertson, 73, of Solon, died at University Hospitals in Iowa City on July 20,1993, following a drowning accident. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 23, at the First United Methodist Church, with the Reverend David Schuldt officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the University of
Iowa Foundation, Scholarships for the School of Music.
Robertson was born on November 18, 1919 in Confidence, Iowa, the son of Jacob and Iva (Morlan) Robertson. He graduated from Centerville High School, Centerville Junior College, and received a BA and MA from the University of Iowa School of Music. He was a teacher and Band Director at Iowa City High School for 20 years.
He married Vona Van Alstine on June 7,1942 in Clarinda. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City and was also a member of the University Alumni Association and an Army Veteran
of WWII.
Among survivors are his wife, Vona Robertson of Solon, two daughters, Randa (Mrs. Jack) Behrens of Burlington.and Lisa Robertson of Tallahassee, Fla., two grandsons and a brother, Bernie Robertson of Corydon.

Scotton, Reva Hutt -

Reva Hutt Scotton, formerly of Blanchard, died of a heart attack Saturday, August 14,1993. There will be an Eastern Star graveside service at Lake Elsenore, Ca. Memorials are to go to Eastern Star.
Scotton is survived by her husband, Lyle, a son Ronald and his wife Susan and two grandsons.
Mrs. Scotton was the sister-in-law of Ruby and Byron Scotton of Northboro.

Smith, Leona C. Gray -

Leona  C.  Smith,  82, of Clarinda died July 2, 1989, at Stanton Care Center where she had been a resident since last December. 
She was born April 30,1907 in Nodaway County, Mo, the daughter of Causby and Anna Royer Gray.
She graduated from Villisca High School in 1926 and taught school in the Guss area from then until 1933. On March 12, 1932 she married Howard W. Smith, who preceded her in death in 1981. Mr. and Mrs. Smith operated the Lunch Box Cafe in Maryville from 1956 to 1971.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Clarinda United Methodist Church.
Survivors include five children Mrs. Bob (Anna Lou) Burham, Stanton; Mrs. Kenneth (Wylene) Henderson, St. Joseph, Mo; Mrs. Jon (Sandra) Abbott, McAlester, Ok; LeRoy H. Smith, Kansas City, Mo; and Mrs. Ron (Margaret) DeBois, Kansas City, Mo. There are 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband, and sister, Violet Walters.

Funeral services for Mrs. Leona C. Smith, 82 of Clarinda were held Wednesday, July 5th at the Clarinda United Methodist Church with Rev. Eric Kutzli officiating.
Mrs. Smith died Sunday night at the Stanton Care Center.

Earl Snively,75, of Council Bluffs died August 11, 1993. Snively was a member of Twin Cities Christian Church and Council Bluffs Senior Center.

Spaulding, John R. "Jack" -

John R. (Jack) Spaulding, 67, of Chicago, Ill, died Friday, August 6, 1993 in St. Luke's Hospital, Chicago, after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Shenandoah April 21, 1926, to Mr. and Mrs. John R. Spaulding and was a 1944 graduate of Clarinda High School. He graduated from the University of Nebraska and later from Creighton University.
He taught in Council Bluffs before moving to the Chicago area where he taught until he retired a few years ago.
Survivors include two nieces, Donna Blubaugh of Garden Grove, Ca, and Martha McDaniel of Denver, Co.
Memorial services were held in Chicago Wednesday, August 11, and graveside services on Thursday, August 12, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah.

Strange, Harold Lewis "Junie" Jr -

Funeral services for Harold Lewis (Junie) Strange Jr., 35, will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. John Clark officiating. He died suddenly Saturday, August 28, while in Tennessee.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial is to be in the Riverton Cemetery.
Strange was born August 8,1958 at Fairfax, Mo, to Harold and Phyllis Strange.
He worked at Cardinal Auto in Clarinda and resided in Villisca. He served in the U.S. Army from 1978 to 1981, when he received an honorable discharge with the rank of sergeant.
Survivors include a son, Joshua, 7; two daughters, Shawna, 13; and Tessa, 16; of Friendville, Tn; his parents, Harold and Phyllis Strange of Villisca; sisters, Ilene Kovar and husband Mike of Clarinda, Mary Gage and husband Kent of Villisca, Vicki Gardner and husband Larry of Lawrence, Ks, and Patricia Kimbro and husband Rick of Clarinda, also seven nieces, eight nephews, aunts and uncles.

Summers, Ivol Lee -

Ivol Lee Summers, 78, of Romoland, Ca died Thursday, August 19,1993 at Medical Arts Convalescent Hospital. Graveside services were held at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Ca, at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 23.
Summers was born in Clarinda on October 7, 1914 and moved to California 46 years ago. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was employed by Lockheed as an aircraft mechanic for 20 years.
He is survived by a brother, Wayne E. Summers, Kirkland, Wa.

Tait, Vera L. Peach -

Vera Tait, 54, of Red Oak, formerly of Clarinda, died early Thursday morning September 30,1993 at the Care Center in Griswold. She had been ill the past two years.
She was born December 5, 1938 at Bedford, the daughter of George and Naomi (Adams) Peach. She was married to Kenneth Lawson on April 20, 1960. He preceded her in death on May 21, 1983.
On October 20, 1984, she married Harold Tait, who survives. Other survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Harry (Michelle Ann) Ridnour of Clarinda, two grandchildren, sisters, Mrs. Ermal (Marjorie) Raynor of San Diego, Ca.; Mrs. Vernon (Louise) Herzberg of Clarinda; Mrs. Jim (Dorothy) Linkins of Shenandoah; Mrs. Marlin (Erma) Shrimpton of Clearfield; Mrs. Don (Donna) Overman of Omaha, Ne.; Mrs. Wilbur (Wilma) Campbell of Clarinda; Mrs. Rich (Marilyn) Arrick of Missouri Valley: brothers, Paul Peach of Orlando, Fl.; Glen Peach of Detroit, Mi.; and Alan Peach of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kenneth Lawson and a brother, Clark Peach.

Mrs. Duane (Martha) Thomas of Hamburg died Sept. 18 at Grape Memorial Hospital in Hamburg after several years of declining health. She was born Dec. 15,1924 to Will and Nelle Wubker McDonald at College Springs.
Mrs. Thomas graduated from New Market High School in 1942. In June 1945 she was married to Duane Thomas of New Market, who proceded her in death on August 15, 1993.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one sister Helen Potter.
Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Shepherd of Shenandoah, one son Michael Thomas and wife Dorothy of Hamburg; one sister Mrs. Alfred (Ruth) Hunter of Clarinda; and two brothers, Robert McDonald of Tempe, Az. and Bill McDonald of New Market. There are seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Edward C. Tuttle, 82, of Clarinda died Friday, August 13, 1993, at Bcthesda Care Center.
He was born November 8, 1910 at Tekamah, Ne, the son of William J. and Edna Bauers Tuttle. Tuttle had been a laborer and lived at the Page Care Facility before going to Bethesda Care Center.
He is survived by a brother, Bern Tuttle of York, Ne, and sisters, Wilma Wilder of Fontana, Ca, and Luella Griffith of Newport Richie, Fl.

Donald Eugene (Gene) Walker
Memorial Services were held for Donald Eugene (Gene) Walker, 58, of Denver, Co., at the St. Martin in the Fields Church in Aurora, Co. after his death on September 11, 1993. Officiating the service was Rev. Richard A. Kautz.
He was born November 29,1934 to Sadie (Young) and Floyd Miles Walker in Shenandoah. He attended Clarinda schools and entered the air force. After returning from Vietnam he worked as a mechanic for Continental Airlines.
He is survived by his wife Jane; daughters Lorinda and husband Chuck Davis, Shari and husband Jack Knous, of Elizabeth, Co.; Tammy and husband David Allen of Kirkland, Ill; step daughters Dena Benfield, Pottstown, Pa.; Javina and husband Greg Davis of Schwenksville, Pa.; Marie and husband Ken Ray, Aurora, Co. and eleven grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers Floyd Walker of Anaheim, Ca.; Kenneth Walker of Clarinda; sister, Joyce Hagemeier of Washington, and Patricia Moore of Indianapolis, In.

Mrs. Gary (Joy) Webb, 50, of Clarinda died on August 24,1993 at Methodist Medical Center in Omaha after a brief illness. Webb was born October 9,1942 at Corning, the daughter of Ernest and Anna Simmons Cross. On March 31,1961 she was married to Gary Webb who survives. She had worked at the Clarinda Company for many years.

Patricia Wheeler, 94, of Braddyville, Iowa, entered into peace Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Lincoln, Nebraska. Patricia Viola Wheeler was born September 29, 1919, in Wallagras, Maine to Paul J. Michaud and Rose M. (Austin) Michaud. She grew up in Maine and graduated from High School. Pat and Eugene Wheeler met in Hartford, Connecticut where he was stationed in the Navy. They were united in marriage in 1945 at Mare Island, California. They were blessed with two sons, John Wayne and Richard Henry.

Following her husband’s discharge from the Navy in 1956, they made their home in San Diego, California where she worked as a secretary for the Government General Services Administration Inter Agency Motor Pool. Pat retired in 1981 and returned with her husband to Braddyville, Iowa where he had lived growing up.

Pat was very energetic and had many activities. She had a large garden and enjoyed gardening and canning, preserving and cooking. Quilting was her passion. Pat also enjoyed reading and all forms of art craft. She was a wonderful mother, mother-in-law and grandmother; always remembering birthdays and anniversaries.

Preceding Pat in death were her parents; husband, Eugene Wheeler and son, John Wayne Wheeler.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Richard Wheeler and wife Karen of San Diego, California; grandchildren, Anna Wheeler of San Diego, California, Devin Wheeler and wife Alondra of San Diego, California, Laura Padilla and husband Michael of San Diego, California, Evan Wheeler and wife Lizelle of North Carolina, Duncan Wheeler of San Dielgo, California and Elise Johnson and husband Nicholas of Japan; great grandchildren, Jaden Wheeler, Addison Wheeler, Liam McCartney and Collin Wheeler; sister, Bernice Puckett of Yucaipa, California; other relatives and many friends

Funeral services for Harry Whipple, 88, of Villisca, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 24, at Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca, with Rev. Albert Baker officiating. Visitation is Monday between 7 and 8 p.m. Burial is to be in the Braddyville Cemetery.
Harry Ernest Whipple, son of Earl and Mary Bourn Whipple, was born May 14, 1905, at Hitt, Mo, and died Sunday, August 22, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center, where he was a resident. Whipple had been a farmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Florence Irene Erickson; one brother, Roscoe Whipple; and one sister, Mable Heitmier.
Survivors include two children, George Whipple of Red Oak and Mrs. Dale (Frances) Moore of Omaha, nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
