Daugherty, Glenn A. "Shag" - Graveside services for Glenn Daugherty, age 101, of Mountain Home, Ark., and formerly of Elmo, Mo., and Clarinda, Iowa area, who entered into peace Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at Gassville Nursing Home, Gassville, Ark., was held 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at High Prairie Cemetery, Elmo, Mo. Visitation with the family was held 1:00 p.m. -2:00 p.m. at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial was in the High Prairie Cemetery, Elmo, Mo. A funeral service were held at the Kirby and Family Funeral Home, Mountain Home. Memorials may be made in Glenn's name. Glenn A. (Shag) Daugherty, age 101, of Mountain Home, Ark., passed from this life on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at the Gassville Nursing Home, Gassville, Ark. Glenn was born on August 14, 1910, in Elmo, Mo. He was the son of the late Charlie and Clara (Honaker) Daugherty. He is preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Geneva Barr.
He married Edna Holmes on February 14, 1942. Glenn served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII on the South Pacific Islands of New Guinea and Biak. After the war, he and Edna bought a farm southwest of Clarinda, Iowa, where he farmed for 29 years. He was a member of the Lions Club, College Springs, Iowa, the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge, both of Clarinda, Iowa. He was a substitute rural mail carrier out of both Clarinda and Shenandoah, Iowa for many years. After he retired from farming, he worked part-time at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.
Glenn and Edna moved to Mountain Home, Ark., in 1983. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mountain Home, and served as volunteer for Hospice of the Ozarks for many years.
He is survived by his wife Edna, of 69 years, two sons; Allan and wife Judy (Thurman) of Mountain Home, Ark., Charles and wife Beth (Hart) of San Miguel, Calif.; grandchildren, Jeffrey, Dustin and wife Jill, all of Marietta, Ga., Shannon and husband Ted Mahoney of Orleans, Mass., and Casey Daugherty of Scottsdale, Ariz.; great-grandchildren Rylee Hayes, Clover and Miles Daugherty, Seamus and Dylan Mahoney, Riley and Hunter Gajdos, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins

 

Davis, Betty Jean - Betty Jean Davis was born on February 9, 1947 in Huron, South Dakota, the daughter of Charley and Amelia (Fassler) Davis. Betty entered into the arms of her Lord on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Nebraska Medical Center following a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Betty's life was spent primarily in the communities of Southwest Iowa. She attended Shenandoah Elementary School through the 3rd grade then attended school at the Glenwood State School. She later went to work with Nishna Productions at their Shenandoah and Red Oak locations.

Betty was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Shenandoah. She enjoyed watching DVD movies and spending time with her family and friends. She especially loved her cat "Ginger." Betty had a heart of gold and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. Those left to cherish her memory include her brother LeRoy Davis and wife Barbara of College Springs; sister Marilyn McCoy and husband Garlen of Shenandoah; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends

 

Davison, Pearl Edna Bower - Funeral services for Pearl Davison, age 97, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Westridge Care and Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa, were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Visitation with the family were held 5-7 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012 at the funeral home. Burial was in the Butler Cemetery, Shambaugh, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Shambaugh United Methodist Church or to the Iowa Hospice.
Pearl Edna Bower Davison was born November 19, 1914, in Coon Rapids, Iowa. She was the youngest of ten children. Her parents were William Bower and Harriet (Bates) Bower. She moved around frequently as a girl. Pearl attended school in Coon Rapids, Omaha and Council Bluffs. She moved to Shambaugh when she was a senior and graduated from Clarinda High School. She was united in marriage to Lain Davison in November of 1932. They had five children, Patricia Davison Whipp (Charles), Lowell (Patsy), Dewey (Paula), Dale and Joyce Davison Ripley (Gene). She has over one hundred grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
Pearl lived on the family farm with her husband and family. She was a good cook and raised a big garden. Her specialty was coconut pie. She loved flowers and had a beautiful flower garden. Pearl had a big collection of African Violets and could keep them blooming. She crocheted afghans and doilies that she gave away to friends and family.
Lain and Pearl owned and operated coin laundries in Illinois and Clarinda. Lain worked on the washers and Pearl assisted him in the office and operating the laundries.
In later years she started playing golf with her husband. She made many friends at the Clarinda Country Club. They moved to Clarinda in 1998. Pearl enjoyed sitting in her dining room watching the traffic go by.
Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lain Davison; all of her brothers and sisters; two daughters, Patricia Whipp and Joyce Ripley; one son, Dale Davison; two grandsons, Dan Whipp and David Ripley and one great grandson, Luke Morrison.
Left to cherish Pearl's memory are her son, Lowell Davison and wife Patsy of Clarinda, Iowa; son, Dewey Davison and wife Paula of Ft. Pierce, Florida; her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
Pearl was loved by all of her family and will be very much missed

 

DeBolt, Herby Walter - Funeral services for Herby DeBolt, age 81, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at his residence rural Clarinda, Iowa, were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 12, 2012 at the Ritchie Funeral Home with Reverend Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Visitation with the family was held 5:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 11 at the funeral home. Burial was in the Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa with military rites by American Legion Sergy Post 98 with taps by Bailey DeBolt. Herby Walter DeBolt was born March 5, 1931, near Macedonia, Iowa, to Lester L. DeBolt and Mathilda (Kruse) DeBolt. He was the youngest of eleven brothers and sisters. Herby grew up attending rural schools and Corning High School. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Eighmy of Gravity, Iowa on March 24, 1953 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They were blessed with three sons, Curtis, Loren, and Alan.
He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict as a Chief Switchboard Operator from November 1952 until honorably discharged in September 1954. Herb was a car and tractor mechanic most of his life. He worked for tractor implement dealerships in Clarinda and also leased and operated a service station in New Market for almost 15 years in a partnership with his wife and children. He also worked in construction as a caterpillar operator and during his tenure, Herb was a plumber. After retirement, Herb worked for a local fertilizer plant in Clarinda and also drove a food truck for the State of Iowa delivering food to the prison.
As a community leader, Herb was a member of the Methodist Church in New Market since 1964. He was on the City Council in New Market, a Legion member, and a leader and supporter of the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America and was a member of New Market's Civic Club. He also promoted and helped with several town events.
In 1983, Herb and Lorraine moved from New Market to their current residence. Herb always wanted a little acreage where he could raise hogs and cattle. He loved fresh food from the garden and also enjoyed planting garden and giving to family, friends, and neighbors. He took a lot of pride in his place and it showed as every board was painted and the grass always mowed. The compliments have been ongoing.
Herb was a family man and loved his wife, kids, and grand kids. He's watched a ton of ball games watching his kids play, his grand kids play and also Alan's baseball teams he coached over the years. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours hunting and fishing with his wife, kids and grandchildren. He loved music….from listening to live and recorded music and occasionally playing the harmonica in family Sunday gatherings.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy (Juanita), Marion (Edith), Dale (Renee), Merle, Earl; sisters, Vera Viner (Ralph), Viola McVay (Bea); brothers-in-law, Robert Hicks, Ivan Eighmy (Dorothy); sisters-in-law, Mildred Goslin (Dick), Mary Eighmy.
Herb is survived by his wife, Lorraine and sons, Curtis DeBolt and wife Traci of Clarinda, Iowa, Loren L. DeBolt of Shenandoah, Iowa and Alan DeBolt and wife Belinda of Shenandoah, Iowa; four grandchildren, Erin and Austin DeBolt of Clarinda and Bailey and Blair DeBolt of Shenandoah; sister, Vivian Hicks of Stanton, Iowa; brothers, Lester DeBolt (Evelyn) of Red Oak, Iowa, Robert DeBolt (Marjorie) of Charles City, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Elmerna DeBolt of Carson, Washington, Marie Babcock of New Market, Iowa; brother-in-law, Earl Eighmy of Clarksville, Tennessee; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Herb will be greatly missed by his family and friends but his memory will live on in their hearts. May God grant comfort and peace to all who mourn his passing.


Delaney, Iris June Hensel - Iris June Delaney, age 87, passed away February 9, 2012 at Garden View Nursing Home. She was born and raised on a farm in Grant, Iowa on October 24, 1924 to Frank and Lillie (Johnson) Hensel. Her father was a farmer and her mother worked as a nurses aide. She has five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by a sister Ruth Olson of Fargo, North Dakota and a brother Ray Hensel of Shoemakerville, Pennsylvania.

Iris attended school in Grant, Iowa. In her teens and early 20's she worked at Karle's Bakery in Villisca.

Iris married Woodrow Delaney on December 16, 1946 and moved to Villisca, he worked as a farmer until the late 1950's, then he was employed by the Municipal Power Plant in Villisca. They had three children and son who died as an infant, two daughters, Christina Gray and Stella Baker both of Shenandoah. After the girls were in school, Iris worked as a nurses aide at Cozad and Gulick Nursing Homes in Villisca.

In 1971 her husband Woodrow died of a heart attack at the age of 52. Iris had to get a birth certificate and when she went to get it the name on the certificate was Girl Hensel, she was never given a name at that time being born at home, so her mother Lillie Hensel and sister Mable Weaver, had to go and prove who she was, she could of changed her name, but kept what she had, it is funny now, but was quite an ordeal, today it would have been impossible.

After the death of her husband, Iris delivered the Omaha World Herald all over the town of Villisca, she had quite a route, until the age of 78.

Iris has four grandchildren, three boys and one girl. She also has five great-grandchildren, four girls and one boy, and one step-great-grandson. Iris oldest great-granddaughter took Iris's married name Delaney.

Iris enjoyed doing Word Search, crocheting layettes and blankets for new born babies and making afghans for people, kept her real busy. She also enjoyed bowling and was on leagues until the early 1990's when she fell and broke her hip. She later moved to Shenandoah when she came to Garden View in October of 2008

 

Demanett, Norma Elizabeth Marie Otte - Norma Elizabeth Marie Otte Demanett, 101 of rural Clarinda passed away May 8, 2012 in Red Oak, Iowa. Norma was born on a farm 10 miles northwest of Clarinda, Iowa on January 12, 1911 to Anna (Rope) Demanett and Joseph Otte. She graduated from Immanuel Lutheran School. On July 17, 1941 Norma married Ralph Demanett from Concordia, Kansas. Norma raised oodles of chickens, a big garden, sewed, quilted, and tatted. Norma and Ralph had three children: Juanita (Wesley) Blume, of Clarinda, Iowa, Janet (Monroe) Neihart, Braddyville, Iowa, Richard Damanett who resides on the farm. Surviving Norma are three children, eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph; parents Joe and Anna Otte; and a brother Herbert (Frances) Otte.
Norma will be long remembered for her stubborn determination, spirit of life, delightful sense of humor and excellent cooking (from scratch). In her later years she wished to reach the age of 100 and stay in her home on the farm. That she did!
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery northwest of Clarinda, Iowa with Pastor Boye officiating. Desch, Lois "Charline" Giles - Mrs. Lois Charline Desch, age 83 of 1608 North 16th Street in Clarinda, Iowa passed away Monday June 11, 2012 at Houston Hospice in Houston, Texas.
Lois “Charline” Giles, the daughter of the late Grover C. Giles and Averill Ellen Webb, was born on May 8, 1929 in Mt. Moriah, Missouri. Charline attended high school in Bethany, Missouri. She later met and married John E. (“Ed”) Desch in 1949. She was a homemaker, devoted mother and loving wife. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John E. (“Ed”) Desch, brothers Joseph Giles and Russell Giles, and sister Faye Pool.
She is survived by a son, John Desch and his wife Sandra of Rock Hill, South Carolina; daughter Kathy George of Spring, Texas; daughter Karen McMillin and her husband Terry of Sugar Land, Texas; her sister Janell Carmichael and her husband Carl of Shawano, Wisconsin. Charline was the proud grandmother of nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Charline Desch will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday June 16, 2012 at St. Clare Catholic Church in Clarinda, Iowa with Father Joy officiating. Interment will be at Clarinda Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or Iowa Hospice. Visitation with the family present will be 5-6:30 pm Friday at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with a Rosary at 6:30 pm.

Dideriksen, Harry Andrew - Graveside services for Harry Dideriksen, age 93, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Thursday, June 28, 2012 at the Eiler House, Clarinda, Iowa, were held 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 2, 2012 at the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa. Visitation with the family was held 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Heartland Hospice, Red Oak, Iowa.
Harry Andrew Dideriksen was born July 25, 1918, in Neola, Iowa to Nels Dideriksen and Christina (Hellstrum) Dideriksen. He was one of eight children. He was raised on a farm and assisted his father with the farming operation. Harry honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II from February 10, 1941 to September 3, 1945. He was captured at Fade Pass, North Africa and spent twenty six months and ten days as prisoner of war of the Germans. On April 4, 1950, he was united in marriage to Juanita Snyder at Clarinda, Iowa.
Harry was a life long farmer and enjoyed being a farmer. He farmed in the Shenandoah and Clarinda area. Harry had an extensive collection of toy John Deere tractors. He was a member of the American Legion. Harry enjoyed visiting with his family and friends.
Preceding Harry in death were his parents; wife, Juanita (11/10/1999); siblings, Julius, June, Chris, Robert, James, Raymond and Clara.
Left to cherish his memory are his sisters-in-law, Ruth Dideriksen of Gravity, Iowa, Eleanore Liljedahl and husband Chuck of Shenandoah, Iowa; friend of the family, Mary Etta Otte of Clarinda, Iowa; nieces; nephews and many friends.
Harry will be missed by all who knew his friendly smile.
His memory will live on in their hearts. May God grant comfort and peace to those who mourn his passing

 

Docker, Edward Joseph "Joe" - Edward Joseph “Joe” Docker, age 84, of Essex, Iowa passed away Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Edward Joseph “Joe” Docker was born June 26, 1928 Northeast of Red Oak, Iowa the son of John Bernard and Mabel (Olson) Docker. He grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Red Oak High School. He was united in marriage to Jeanette Runyan on May 17, 1953 and two children were born to this union: David and James. Joe farmed and held various other jobs before starting to work for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He retired after many years as a driver‘s license examiner. Joe was united in marriage to Muriel Morris on February 14, 2002 and they made their home in Essex, Iowa. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak, Iowa. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and working with his Farmall Tractor. He spent many vacations at antique tractor shows.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his son, James Docker. Survivors include his wife: Muriel Docker of Essex, Iowa; son: David Docker and wife Kim of Red Oak, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Kelly Docker of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Ben Docker and wife Kellijo of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Matthew Docker and wife Kassie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Andrew Docker of Red Oak, Iowa; Mindy Docker of Red Oak, Iowa; Chris Docker of Omaha, Nebraska; and Dan Docker and wife Kilee of Emerson, Iowa; great grandchildren: Ellie and Brody Docker of Rock Rapids, Iowa and Colin Docker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brothers: Robert Docker and wife Ruth of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Bernard Docker and wife Delores of Red Oak, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, October 15, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak with Pastor Fred Pilecki and Pastor Jim Ressegieu officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 2-4 PM Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

Donaldson, Tina Marie Dunn

Funeral services for Tina Dunn Donaldson, age 48, of Farragut, Iowa, formerly of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Friday, October 12, 2012 at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Shenandoah, Iowa, will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 15, 2012 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Phil Jorgensen officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 4-6, Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa. Tina Marie (Dunn) Donaldson, daughter of Jim and Janet Dunn was born July 19, 1964 in Kansa City, Missouri. Tina grew up in Clarinda, Iowa where she graduated from the Clarinda High School in 1982. Tina furthered her education at Northwest Missouri State University graduating in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Tina was baptized in April 1976 at the First Christian Church in Clarinda where she also attended Sunday school, church, and Chi Rho youth group. Tina was blessed with two children, Andrew James and Eric Wayne. Tina raised her family in Farragut, Iowa where they moved to in 1995.
Tina was employed at the Shenandoah Medical Center as a billing clerk for the last 15 years; as well as worked for the Admiral Inn, Farragut, Iowa for her dear friend, Janet Burkhiser on Saturdays. Tina enjoyed her job and co-workers, with whom she developed many friendships. She also loved visiting with the dialysis patients. This is where many found Tina to be a very caring and open-hearted person. She always had a bright beautiful smile and would continue to offer her love and support to others even if she did not have much to give herself. Tina enjoyed all genres of music and especially dancing. She attended several concerts with family members and friends. She also enjoyed working on crafts; which she would give to others. She most importantly found the most joy playing with her two granddaughters, Abigaille Souix and Tannia Destiny.
Tina was preceded in death by Grandmothers, Lois Boardman, Mildred Dunn and Uncle Barry Boardman.
Left to cherish in the memory are her sons, Andrew Dunn of Farragut, Iowa and Eric Donaldson of Papillion, Nebraska; parents, Jim and Janet Dunn of Clarinda, Iowa; siblings, Jodi Gusman and husband, Peter of Kansas City, Missouri and Staci Dunn Pablo and husband, Manny of Clarinda, Iowa; her beloved granddaughters, Abigaille Souix and Tannia Destiny of Farragut, Iowa; nieces, Iris Gusman, Marisela Gusman, Miranda Gusman and Maleah Gusman of Kansas City, Missouri and nephew, Miguel Gusman of Kansas City, Missouri; along with many Aunts, Uncles, family and friends.

 

Downing, James Lewis - James Lewis Downing, son of Loren I. and Harryette I. (Baird) Downing, was born on January 9, 1938 in rural Casey, Iowa. He entered into eternal rest on Saturday, January 21, 2012 due to complications of congestive heart failure at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha with his family at his side.
Growing up in rural Casey, Jim attended the Casey Community Schools, graduating from Casey High School with the Class of 1956.
On June 10, 1956, Jim was united in marriage to the love of his life, Rosalie Ann Alff, daughter of Lawrence and Violet Alff. To this union were born four children, Kelly, Ginger, Matthew and Sherrill.
In 1961, the family moved to Shenandoah where Jim worked in construction and as a truck driver for the Post Office Star Route. In addition, he worked for Wesley Johnson at Johnson Welding. He purchased the business from Mr. Johnson in 1972, operating it as Downing Welding. In 1988, he opened Steel Fabrication Company, operating both businesses until his retirement in 1998. Following his retirement, Jim enjoyed working in his shop, mowing with his Cub Cadet and was an avid reader.
A long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, Jim held many offices within the church. He was also a longtime member of the Shenandoah Optimist Club, where he spent many hours working with the youth of the Shenandoah community. He was a two-time Past President of the Iowa Blacksmith and Weldors Association and was also active in the National Blacksmiths and Weldors Association. Jim served as Regional Representative for southwest Iowa with the organization, Youth For Understanding, placing students from other countries in homes throughout southwest Iowa for the school year. His family hosted two international exchange students.
Preceding Jim in death were his parents; mother and father-in-law; step mother, Mildred Fox Downing; step mother-in-law, Freda Lund Alff; and dear family friend, the Reverend Don Mann. Survivors include his loving wife of 55 plus years, Rosalie Downing of Shenandoah; four children, Kelly Downing and wife Dee Ann of Wahoo, NE, Ginger Downing and husband Jack Noble of Edina, MN, Matthew Downing of Shenandoah and Sherrill Ehlen and husband Jim of Miami, FL; four grandchildren, Doug Downing (Kim) of Yigo, Guam, Blair Noble of Edina, MN and Emily and William Ehlen of Miami, FL; three great granddaughters, Cheyenne and Gabriel Haney and Christin Downing of Guam. Other survivors include his sister, Mary Fredrickson and husband Norman of Omaha; brother, Robert Downing and his wife Ginger of Green Valley, AZ; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wendell and Darlene Alff of Sacramento, CA, and Bill and Shirley Kenny of Omaha; dear family friend, Nancy Mann of Ft. Drennen, Charles Guston - Funeral services for Charles Drennen, 80, of Yorktown, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda, with Ken Card officiating.
Drennen entered into peace on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda.

Charles Guston Drennen was born Oct. 3, 1931, in Taylor County, Iowa to Harvey D. Drennen and Agnes Marie (Laub) Drennen. Charles and his family lived several places around Blockton and Sharpsburg, Iowa and Nodaway County, Mo. He attended Burlington Junction High School. Charles' mother died when he was 14 and he and his siblings were a very close family. Charles was united in marriage June 4, 1948, in Elmo, Mo. to Joyce Merriett. They were blessed with three daughters, Patricia, Peggy and Pamela.
Early in his working career Charles worked for Roberts Dairy and Iowa Power and Light Company. He then owned and operated Drennen's Garage and Used Cars in Yorktown. He enjoyed being a mechanic and kept the cars, tractors and trucks of the community running. Charles was a very caring person, always ready to help someone. In later years, he drove hot-shot trips for Thummel Trucking. Charles served the community of Yorktown faithfully for many years as Mayor, council member and Volunteer Fire Department member.
Charles enjoyed riding horses, and rode in many parades he also enjoyed attending the 4-H horse shows of his grandchildren. He loved kids and was adopted grandfather to the kids of Yorktown. He enjoyed taking care of his children and grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy Drennen and Donald Drennen; sister, Betty Pfeifer.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joyce Drennen of Yorktown; daughters, Pat Huseman and husband Keith of Coin, Peg Barbee and husband Tom of Lincoln, Pam Lindholm and husband Russell of San Antonio; grandchildren, Jenny Huseman, Brian Huseman, Jill Mitchell, Lauren Barbee, Madison Barbee, Kristin Drennen, Abby Meadows; great-grandchildren, Reyna Huseman, Jordan Flores; brothers, Sam Drennen of Council Bluffs, Bobbie Drennen of Lenox; sister, Helen Ward and husband Paul of Maryville, Mo.; nieces; nephews and many friends

 

Dukes, Lela Ione Pershin - Lela Ione Pershin Dukes, daughter of Forest Pershin and Audrey Raynor Pershin, was born March 26, 1913 near New Market, Iowa and departed this life at her home at Ellston, Iowa on December 29, 2011 at the age of 98.
Lela graduated from Gravity High School and then attended teachers college at Red Oak. She taught school north of Ellston at the Dickson Country School.
Lela married Vincent Dukes on February 27, 1932. At that time, she decided to stay home and work on the farm and raise a family.
Family and friends meant everything to Lela. She was the neighborhood grandma to many. She enjoyed dancing, gardening and playing cards. Lela was a member of the Ellston United Methodist Church.
Lela is survived by five children oldest daughter Jane Lee Feeback (Jim) of Mount Ayr, IA, daughter Dorothy Burgher (Gary) of Kellerton, IA, daughter Doris Jean Redman of Mount Ayr, IA, son Joe Dean Dukes (Jan) of Ellston, IA, and daughter Donna Rae Greenland (Kevin) of Ellston, IA. Lela is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law Phyllis Dukes and nieces and nephews.
Lela was preceded in death by husband Vincent in 1987, son Jimmy Dukes in 1972 and brothers Dale, Lee, Elbert and Mack Pershin

 

Duley, Katheryn Messerly - Katheryn Duley, age 68, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Visitation with the family were held 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 27 at Hillside Missionary Church. Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at the Hillside Missionary Church, with Pastor Brian Bontrager officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Duley family.
Katheryn Ann was born December 12, 1943, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Dale Messerly and Bernice (Minikis) Messerly. She was the oldest of three children and grew up on a farm in the Fort Dodge, IA area. After graduating high school, she went on to become a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse for over 40 years in various capacities.
She was married to Walter Slininger on May 1, 1964. They had three sons, Greg, Jeff, and Jason. Katheryn and Walter were married for 41 years until Walter passed in 2005. It was a year later that Katheryn met Robert. They were married on December 22, 2006.
Katheryn had a giving, joyful, servant's heart. This was made evident many times throughout the years of her life in many different ways. She was active in her family, her community, and her church. She particularly loved children and was always very involved in Sunday School or youth groups. She loved sharing Jesus with kids! She also very much enjoyed photography. She was the official family memory keeper, and her photo books were something to behold.
Katheryn was preceded in death by her first husband Walter Slininger, mother Bernice Messerly, and sister Kay Shamblin.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Robert Duley, children Greg and Carmon Slininger of Harcourt, IA, Jeff Slininger of Bozeman, MT, and Jason and Angela Slininger of Omaha, NE, eight grandchildren, father Dale, mother Grace, brother Douglas, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Katheryn will be greatly missed by her family and friends but her memory will live on in their hearts.

Dunkin, Charlotte Lorraine Bomer - Charlotte Lorraine (Bomer) Dunkin was born March 30, 1929 in Burlington, Iowa to Elmer and Alice (Julius) Bomer. She married Raymond Strand in 1949 in Glenwood, Iowa. Charlotte worked at Ben Franklin and Lee’s for many years. After Raymond’s death in 1964, Charlotte married Lynn Dunkin in 1966 and moved to Villisca, Iowa. She worked at Clarinda Company until she retired. After Lynn Dunkin died in 1973, Charlotte moved to Clarinda where she was very active in the Legion Auxiliary and volunteered with R.S.V.P. She loved traveling, playing cards and spending time with her family. Charlotte was an excellent cook and was very proud of her large cook book collection. She enjoyed her companionship with her dog Daisy that she loved dearly.
Charlotte passed away August 2, 2012 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa. She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Raymond Strand and Lynn Dunkin; son John Strand; brothers: Gerald Bomer and Randall Bomer; and great-great grandson Carter Meaike.
Surviving Charlotte are her daughters: Barbara Wingerd and husband Leonard of Glenwood, Kathy Clark of Villisca, Joyce Howrey and husband Stephen of Glenwood, Jona Nelson and husband Randy of Villisca and Robin Strand and fiancé Kelvin Jones of Red Oak; daughter-in-law Connie Strand of Osage Beach, MO; 15 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephew, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services for Charlotte L. (Bomer) Dunkin, 83 of Red Oak formerly of Clarinda, will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 6, 2012 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Clarinda with burial in the Glenwood Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Charlotte Dunkin Memorial Fund.

Easter, Verla L. Peterman - Verla L. Easter was born April 18, 1918 in New Market, Iowa to Merrill and Edna (Thompson) Peterman. She departed this life April 25, 2012 at the Pine View Manor in Stanberry, Missouri at the age of 94 years.
Verla graduated from High School and worked as a sales clerk at Montgomery Ward for many years. She was united in marriage to Clifford D. Easter. They were the parents of two daughters, Sharon and Marilyn.
Verla was preceded in death by her husband Clifford, daughter Sharon, parents Merrill and Edna, sister Pearl Pershin, brothers, Dale, Kenneth, Dennis, and Floyd Peterman.
She is survived by her daughter Marilyn and husband Bob Tibbetts of Grant City, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren, one brother Ray Peterman, Bedford, Iowa. Verla will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Edwards, Fern Margaret Vogel - Fern Margaret was born September 26, 1917 near Latimer IA, to John and Emma (Ahrens) Vogel- the 8th of 9 children. She moved with her family to Blanchard, IA in the 1930’s.Early in her life Fern worked for families in the area helping with cooking, cleaning and care giving. These were skills well taught by her mother and ones she used throughout her life.
She married Ted Edwards in 1938 in Council Bluffs, IA. They first lived and farmed near Westboro, MO, before moving to their home of 65 years east of Blanchard, IA, where they raised 4 daughters, all of whom were born at home.
Fern was a member of the Eastern Star and a founding member of the neighborhood Kil Kare Klub. She was active in the Blanchard Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and served church functions. Fern was always available and capable of doing many things to support the community.
As a farm wife she spent many happy hours tending and sharing her vegetable and flower gardens. She enjoyed sewing for herself and her daughters. Fern was an expert quilter and many of her infant quilts wrapped community babies. To some, she was known as “Fern Heloise” with many helpful hints.
Fern passed away October 16, 2012 at Smithville, Missouri. Fern was preceded in death by her husband Ted, her parents, sisters Lena Rathman, Flora (Dolly) Dorhman, Alma Winger, and brothers Walter and Lewis Vogel.
Surviving are one brother Leonard Vogel, sisters Vera Wiley-Dunn of Colby, KS and Helen Cato of Pueblo, CO. Also surviving are daughters Dorothy (Kelley) Snipes of Kirksville, MO, Norma (Glenn) Mackey of Braddyville, IA, Mary (John) Richmond of So Sioux City, NE, Lois (Terry) King of Smithville, MO, 11 grandchildren 3 step grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Eitzen, Liva Louise Bartles - Liva Eitzen entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012 at Bickford Cottage in Marshalltown, Iowa, while under the care of Iowa River Hospice.

Liva Louise Bartles was born on May 17, 1921. She was the eldest of three daughters, born to Merle and Emmer (Alley) Bartles. She was raised in the Shenandoah, Northboro area; graduating from Northboro High School in 1939. Liva was united in marriage to Staff Sargent Orville H. Eitzen on September 8, 1942 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. They made their home in Denison, Texas where Orville was stationed at the Perrin Field. Orville was killed in flight training exercise on August 14, 1944. Liva then returned to Shenandoah, Iowa where she was employed with Earl May company for several years and in the offices of Drs. Weaver and Hoverholser. She was also employed with the Lone Star Gas Company of Grapevine, Texas. She then retired in 1985 as office supervisor at Iowa Electric (Alliant Energy) in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Liva was a long time member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Builders Class and United Methodist Women. In recent years she was a member of Hope United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her sister Loretta Bartles Trullinger of Marshalltown, Iowa, five nieces and nephews: Bart Latta, Lanis Latta Pittard, Mark Trullinger, Carmi Trullinger-Olson and Jeri Ann Trullinger-Meyer.
Liva was preceded in death by her husband Orville, her parents Merle and Emmer Bartles, her sister Lila Latta and her brother-in-law Jerry Trullinger

Funeral services for Walter Eitzen age 93, of rural Villisca, Iowa, who entered into peace Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Good Samaritan Care Center, Villisca, Iowa, will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 11, 2012, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Clarinda, Iowa with Pastor Jerome Wagoner officiating. There will be open visitation at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa 2-4 p.m., Sunday June 10. Burial will be in the Immanuel Cemetery, rural Clarinda, Iowa.

Walter Herman Eitzen was born September 7, 1918 on the family farm near Bethesda, Iowa north of Immanuel Lutheran Church to Herman Eitzen and Emma (Sunderman) Eitzen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Walter attended Immanuel Lutheran School. Walter was united in marriage on September 19, 1948 to Ruth Herzberg at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Walter grew up on the farm and helped with the farming operation. He purchased a farm on Highway 71 in the Forty's near Villisca where he spent the rest of his farming career. Walter was a lifelong farmer and proud cattle feeder. He took great pride in his farm and cattle. He and Ruth made many cattle buying trips to the Sand Hills of Nebraska forming longtime friendships. Walter was well known for his western attire and fondness for his red tractors. He was an active longtime member of the Page County Cattleman Association and was chairman of the board of the Production Credit Association. Walter and Ruth enjoyed going to auctions and antiquing. He was an active longtime member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Villisca, Iowa.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wilbur, Loyd and Harold Eitzen; sisters, Leona Robberts and husband Orville, Margie Moore and husband Charles; sister-in-law, Toni Eitzen; brother-in-law, Lyle Sunderman; nephew Merle Robberts.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Eitzen of Villisca, Iowa; brother, Raymond Eitzen of Villisca, Iowa and numerous nieces, nephews and friends

 

Elliott, Russell William

Russell William Elliott, 83 years, of Fort Madison, Iowa, died at 4:45 pm Sunday July 15, 2012 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, Iowa. He was born April 17, 1929 at Clarinda, Iowa, the son of Ralph Vern and Della Mae (Maley) Elliott. On August 30, 1953, he married Nola Leona Huffer at Shenandoah, Iowa. They have been married for 58 years.

He first worked as a projectionist in Clarinda, Iowa. After college in 1961, he moved to Fort Madison, where he taught Driver Education for 6 years. Russell’s career in education led him all around the state of Iowa where he worked as principal in many schools, including at Carson, Burlington, and Hamburg. In Sheldon, Iowa he was director of the Northwest Iowa Workshop for the handicapped. He returned to Fort Madison in 1979, where he developed an education program at the Iowa State Penitentiary. He also worked as a substitute teacher and at Freuhauf Corporation for a few years. He then spent an additional 16 years doing maintenance work for a private family.

Russell spent 28 years in the Iowa Army National Guard and attended two officers schools. He was a member of Joy Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife: Nola Elliott, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one son: Russell W. (wife Mary Kay) Elliott II, of Burlington, Iowa; two daughters, Sheryl D. Elliott, of Aurora, Illinois and Brenda L. (husband Mark) Maine, of Springfield, Missouri; four grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is preceded was death by his parents.

His family will greet friends from 10:00 - 11:00 am Monday, July 23, 2012 at the Joy Baptist Church, Fort Madison, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, July 23, 2012 at the Joy Baptist Church, Fort Madison, Iowa, with Pastor Earl Beal, officiating.

Ellison, Stanley Eugene - Stanley Ellison, age 85, of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of Fredericksburg, Iowa entered into peace Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend Leslie Traylor officiating. A funeral service will also be held Monday, April 23, 2012 at the Peace United Church of Christ, Fredericksburg, Iowa with Pastor Bert Williams officiating. A visitation with the family will be held in Fredericksburg from 2-5- p.m., Sunday, April 22 at Chenoweth Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Iowa.
Stanley Eugene Ellison was born July 20, 1926 to Lyle and Blanche (Thompson) Ellison in rural Chickasaw county. He attended Fredericksburg elementary and high school graduating in 1944. On May 29, 1948 he married Lois Elizabeth Mattke at the Evangelical Church in Fredericksburg, Iowa. Stanley and Lois resided in the Fredericksburg, Iowa area until 2005 when they relocated to Clarinda, Iowa. They were members of Peace United Church of Christ in Fredericksburg, where Stanley served on the church advisory committee of Northeast Iowa for 6 years. Stanley also served on The Chickasaw County Board of Education, Chickasaw County Soil Conservation Board, Chickasaw County Extension Service, and was a member of The Lions Club. After moving to Clarinda they were members of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Stanley and Lois enjoyed traveling to Port Aransas, Texas over the winter months for the past 20 years.
Left to cherish Stanley's memory is his wife of 63 years, Lois Elizabeth (Mattke) Ellison. The couple was blessed with four children: Tom (Myrna) of San Antonio, TX; Rodney (Beverly) of Omro, WI; Sue Milius (Tom) of Denver, IA; and Kristin Smith (Michael) of Clarinda, IA. Stanley always had a special place on his lap for his grandchildren: Sonja, Ann, Thomas, Heidi, Adam, Andrew, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Jessica, Caleb, Austin, Owen, & Isabelle. Stanley and Lois were also blessed with 10 great-grandchildren, whom he loved and enjoyed very much, as well as extended family and friends.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Blanche Ellison; one brother, Hubert Ellison; and infant son, Edward.

Farmer, Chelsie Dawn - Chelsie Dawn Farmer was born August 23, 1986 in Clarinda, Iowa the daughter of Gary Mack and Debra Dee (Pratt) Farmer. She passed away on Wednesday morning, July 11, 2012 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah following a lengthy illness at the age of 25 years, 10 months and 18 days.

Cheslie grew up in Clarinda and graduated from Clarinda High School in 2006. Prior to her illness, Cheslie enjoyed participating in athletics and playing in the band. She was an avid reader and enjoyed puzzle books. She loved listening to country music and supporting the Clarinda A’s Baseball team. She was a very active member of Hillside Missionary Church in Clarinda.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Delbert Pratt, Mack and Jean Farmer and Tobe Durfey; her parents, Gary and Deb Farmer; her aunt, Nancy Kirsch; great uncles, Jack McCall, Kenneth Davison and Don Humphrey; cousins, Laura Wymore and Anthony Kirsch.

Ferrell, Robert Sherman - Robert Sherman Ferrell was born November 10, 1942 in Rock Springs, Wyoming, the son of Sherman Earl and Ellen Marie (Keeler) Ferrell. He passed away early Friday morning, July 27, 2012 at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 17 days.

Bob grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 1961. For over 40 years he worked as a printer in Lincoln retiring as a 1st Pressman. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and had a love for model and remote control airplanes. He was a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and enjoyed not only flying his planes but also building them. He also enjoyed being outdoors camping, fishing or racing his jet ski. His true love was his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Norman Ferrell.

Survivors include his wife, Janis Kruzich of Farragut, Iowa; his children, Lisa Erickson and her husband J.R. of Lincoln, Nebraska, Mike Ferrell and his wife Margie of Lincoln, Nebraska, Marcie Poteet and her husband Clint of Elmwood, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, Katrina, Roxanne, Justin, Andrew, Mathew, Brianna and Megan; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Larry Ferrell and his wife Gail of San Diego, California, Jim Ferrell and his wife Sandy of Lincoln, Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Virginia Ferrell of Farmersville, Texas; step children, Michael Kruzich of San Francisco, California, Jeffrey Kruzich and his wife Roxanne of Chicago, Illinois, Lori Kruzich Smith and her husband Jeff of Lexington, North Carolina; two step grandchildren, Chase and Trent; along with many other relatives and friends. Folden, Robert Frank "Lucky" - Robert Frank “Lucky” Folden was born December 1, 1963 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Frank Harvey and Darlyne Mae (Harms) Folden. He passed away on Thursday afternoon, April 5, 2012 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha at the age of 48 years, 4 months and 4 days.
Lucky grew up in Shenandoah and attended Shenandoah Schools. Following high school he worked various jobs, most recently with Hy-Vee in Shenandoah for 12 years. Lucky was a very avid bowler in the youth program growing up. He later bowled in the men’s league in Shenandoah and Red Oak. He was a very active supporter of Shenandoah Athletics for 30 years. You could always find Lucky at the score table or in the dug out for all of the Shenandoah games. He was also a member of the Eagle’s for over 20 years in Shenandoah and was an avid WWE wresting fan. His true love was all of the student athletes and alums of the Shenandoah School District.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Foster, Lotus Lorraine Perkins -Lotus Lorraine Foster, daughter of John Wilson and Mary Etta (Young) Perkins, was born September 9, 1932 on a farm near Randolph, Fremont County, Iowa. Lotus passed away unexpectedly Thursday, June 21, 2012 at her home in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Growing up in Fremont County, Lotus graduated from the eighth grade at Anderson, Iowa and from Sidney High School. Lotus worked in the office of Interstate Nurseries after graduation. In 1962 she and her adopted son, Michael Holman, moved to Shenandoah. In Shenandoah she worked at Hy-Vee and then for Joseph Emge, DDS, as a dental assistant. In 1966, she started working at Henry Field's in the Customer Service Dept. A short time later she became Assistant Manager of the Shenandoah Garden Center and later became manager of that store. Lotus was then promoted to general manager of Henry Field's Garden Center Operations, which consisted of the Shenandoah store, one in Omaha, Nebraska and one in La Vista, Nebraska.
On December 19, 1973, Lotus married Raymond Jack Foster, owner and president of Henry Field's. She then retired in 1977 and devoted her time to gardening. When they moved from their home on Elm Street to South Moreland, she had two acres to enjoy, including an orchard, vegetable garden and many flower gardens. Roses were one of her favorites, and for a few years she tested roses for Jackson & Perkins. They also built a greenhouse where she enjoyed growing orchids and many other exotic plants. In 1995 when they built their new home on Bluegrass Lane she no longer had a greenhouse and had a much smaller lot, but still planted many flowers.
Lotus and Jack enjoyed traveling, fishing and flying. She also enjoyed the company of her cats. Jack had been a pilot for many years and Lotus started flying after she retired and got her private pilot's license. They made many trips to northern Saskatchewan, Canada to fish for Walleye, Lake Trout and Northerns. They also kept a car and boat at Branson, Missouri and would frequently fly down to fish for Trout on Lake Taneycomo. They also enjoyed trips to Europe, especially to visit Jack's relatives in England. They spent time in Hawaii almost every year after 1973.
She was a member of Pythian Sisters Temple #37 in Sidney, Iowa. Lotus was also a lifetime member of the Fremont County Historical Society and served on the Board of Directors. She was responsible for doing the research on the Fremont County country schools and getting signs placed at their locations. She was also on the Ferrel House committee for the Ferrel House Museum in Randolph, Iowa, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah.
Preceding Lotus in death were her husband, Raymond Jack Foster; parents, John and Mary Perkins; her son, Michael Holman; her brother Jim Perkins; and a sister Mary Lou Rasmussen and brother-in-law, Frank Rasmussen. She is survived by her cousin, Richard Perkins and wife Pat and special friends, Todd and Donna Greenwalt and family; other relatives and many friends

 

Franks, David Lee - David Lee Franks, son of Richard Lee and Edna Louise (Maher) Franks, was born on May 15, 1948, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 63.

He attended the Essex Community Schools, graduating from Essex High School with the Class of 1966. Dave then attended Iowa Western Community College in Clarinda where received his Associate's Degree.

On April 4, 1970, Dave was united in marriage to Peggy Ann Royer, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex. They were blessed with two children, Gregory David, 36, and Heidi Marie, 34. They lived in the Essex community all these years.

Dave worked at Farmaster Corp for three years before going to work at Eaton Corporation. He retired after 31 years with Eaton's, in 2003, with a perfect attendance record. Following his retirement he enjoyed spending time fishing, golfing, collecting large rocks and most of all, enjoying time with his family and friends.

Preceding Dave in death were his parents; brother, Martin Franks of Essex; brother-in-law, Verner Dean Isaacson of Red Oak; and grandson, Zachary David Mohatt (three months old).

Funeral services for Leslie Freed, age 85, of rural Clarinda, Iowa, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church, Bethesda, Iowa. Leslie entered into rest Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held 5-8 p.m., Friday, November 2, 2012 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa . Burial will be in the Bethesda Lutheran Church Cemetery. Leslie John Freed, son of Caleb John and Minnie Rachel (Johnson) Freed was born September 23, 1927 near Bethesda, Iowa. He attended Hillcrest Country School and graduated from Essex High School. Leslie served in the United States Marines Corp during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to ConaMara Pollert on Valentine's Day 1954 at Rose Hill Church near Clarinda. They were blessed with four children, Michael, Marvin, Edgar and Melanie.

Leslie was a life long farmer. He was born and raised on the family farm and lived there his whole life with the exception of serving in the military. In addition to farming, Leslie also worked at the Shenandoah Sale Barn and read meters for the Rural Electric Company.

He was an active member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities. Leslie was also very active in the community, serving as a 4-H leader for many years, delivering meals on wheels, and was very generous with his time helping out many neighbors. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids. He spent endless hours watching their ball games. This was an activity that he continued to do and enjoy the rest of his life.

Preceding Leslie in death were his parents and sister, Lorene Nelson.

Fundermann, Randall Lane - Randall Lane Fundermann, the son of Frank J. and Carol (Eyer) Fundermann Sr. was born November 1, 1961 in Sioux City, Iowa. He passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2012, following a courageous seven year battle with cancer at the Immanuel Medical Center, Omaha, NE. Randall lived 50 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Randy's earliest childhood was lived in the Anthon, Iowa area. When Randy was in 2nd grade the family moved to Tabor, Iowa. In 1980, Randy graduated from Fremont Mills High School. Following graduation, he began his farming career in the Tabor area. Randy was united in marriage to Phyllis M. Sell on September 14, 1985 in Glenwood, Iowa. In 1990, they purchased and moved to their farm south of Red Oak. Along with crops, Randy also raised hogs. He had a knack for repairing equipment, along with 'fixing' anything else that broke. Randy especially enjoyed when his family gathered for the harvesting and canning of fruit from their orchard's 30 fruit trees. Randy loved to hunt, fish and to ride his motorcycle. Along with farming and for the past 15 years, Randy had worked for UPS as a pre-loader. He attended the Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman.

Randy is survived by his wife, Phyllis Fundermann of rural Red Oak, IA; three children: Ethan Fundermann of Red Oak, IA; Ciera Soukup and husband Levi of Ankeny, IA; and Haley Fundermann of the home; parents, Frank and Carol Fundermann Sr. of rural Red Oak, IA; brother, Frank Fundermann Jr. of Red Oak, IA; sister, Carrie Ramnes and husband Jeff of Omaha, NE; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends.

Funk, Ivan Dale - Ivan Dale Funk was born on September 26, 1923 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Floyd "Jack" and Fairrell (Ingram) Funk. Ivan entered into eternal peace on April 17, 2012 at Bergen Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
Ivan spent his entire life in the community of Shenandoah. He graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1941. In January of 1943 enlisted in the United States Air Force, he later received an honorable discharge.
On December 28, 1947 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Bradley at the Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah. During his working days Ivan was employed by Townsend Wholesale, Central Surveys, and Farmaster. He and Phyllis along with Melinda and Eldon owned and operated Funk's 66/ Funk-Kirby Oil. Inc. Ivan enjoyed working with the public and visiting with the customers. He was known by many of his friends as "Pinky", a nickname given to him by his uncle.
Ivan was a member of the American Legion, the Jaycee's and the Presbyterian Church. He loved to travel, play golf and spending time with his children and grandchildren, brought him much joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Robert and Jack; and a sister Shirley Young. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Funk; daughters Melinda Kirby and husband Eldon and Lori Smith and husband Dan; grandchildren Brett Kirby and Valerie, Erin Taylor and husband Jon and Amanda Smith; great-granddaughters Madison and Braelynn Kirby; sisters Phyllis Funk and Patsy Gilliam; brother Rex Funk and wife Barb; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends

Gee, Mari"lynn" Taylor - Marilynn Taylor Gee was born on April 11, 1923 in Shields, TX, the daughter of Eugene and Jamie Clyde (Sheffield) Taylor. Lynn entered into the arms of her Lord on Saturday, March 24, 2012 in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Lynn grew up with 6 siblings in "The Valley" of Texas. She graduated from high school following the completion of the 11th grade. She then attended Durham Business School in Austin in 1940.
It was her beloved Aunt Maddie who introduced her to John Gee, who was stationed at Moore Field Air Force Base. The couple was united in marriage on January 18, 1946. In an effort to assist the war effort, Lynn and her friend Dorothy traveled to Washington State to work on a "top secret" job. She later found out her work would be related to the Atomic Bomb! After the war, She and John returned to Iowa where they resided on a farm west of Shenandoah. They later moved into town to their home on Clarinda Avenue.
Lynn's first job was as a secretary in Austin, Texas. After her marriage to John she was a stay at home mom, caring for her boys and husband. Lynn later worked for Elm Heights Care Center as its' activities coordinator, retiring after 18 years of service. After retirement she volunteered countless hours giving back to her community at Meals on Wheels and Hospice.
Lynn thoroughly enjoyed sharing her love of family and traveling all over to see them. She especially enjoyed returning home to "The Valley" and attending the Bluegrass festivals in Arkansas. While at home she was passionate about sharing her gifts of sewing, gardening, walking and being healthy. She had a very strong faith and was very active in her church through Presbyterian Woman. She also enjoyed being part of PEO, Chapter JA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John W. Gee; son Greg J. Gee; and siblings Galvond, Jack, Dorothy and Vida Mae.
Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Gary T. Gee and wife Patti of Shenandoah and Gil N. Gee and wife Kim of Farragut; Greg's wife Mary Kay Gee of Clifton Park, NY; grandchildren, Heather Gee-Wood, Andrew Gee, Wesley Gee, John Robert Gee, Jasmyn Walker, Haleigh Gee, Taylor Gee, Allison Lyman, A. Gibson, Joyce Ann Zirfas - Joyce Ann Gibson was born June 26, 1949 in Maryville, Missouri, the daughter of George Sebastian and Agatha Cecilia (Steinhauser) Zirfas. She passed away on Thursday evening, March 29, 2012 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 62 Years, 9 Months and 3 Days.

Joyce grew up in Tarkio, Missouri and when she was 7, her family moved to Shenandoah. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1967. On November 11, 1967, she was united in marriage to Bill Gibson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah. This union was blessed with two daughters, Tammy and Marsha.

Joyce was a homemaker, raising her two girls and later babysat. She enjoyed reading, collecting cook books and camping. Her true love was her family, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Donald, Jim, Joe, Clarence and Robert Zirfas; and one sister, Agnes Burmania.

Funeral services for Charlene (Houston) Gilmore, age 96, of Clarinda, Iowa, who entered into peace Friday, August 10, 2012 at the Clarinda Regional Medical Center in Clarinda, Iowa, will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2012 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clarinda. Visitation with the family will be held Sunday, August 12, at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Clarinda from 5 to 7 PM. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery, in Clarinda, Iowa.

Charlene Alice (Houston) Gilmore was born November 11, 1915, at the family farm home, the daughter of Roy Edward Houston and Eda (Hoskins) Houston. She grew up attending Jackson School through the elementary years and graduated from the Clarinda High School with the Class of 1932. She later went on to attend Northwest Missouri State University where she obtained her Master's Degree in Elementary Education.

On February 16, 1938, she was united in marriage to Harlan Claire Gilmore at the home of her parents. They were blessed with four children; Doris Elaine, Ruth Ann, William Houston and Harlan Claire, Jr., who died at birth on November 15, 1942.

Charlene was a teacher for many years in rural schools, South Page and Clarinda Schools. After her retirement she enjoyed traveling, quilting, volunteer work and her family and friends. She was a long time member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Women of Song and various teachers' organizations.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Eda Houston; her loving husband Claire Gilmore on June 26, 1969; infant son Harlan Claire Jr.; a sister Doris Engleka, and an infant brother.

Left to cherish Charlene's memory are her children, Elaine Hilsabeck and husband Larry of St. Joseph, Missouri; Ruth Ann Shepherd and husband David of Savannah, Missouri; Bill Gilmore and wife Rita of Clarinda; seven grandchildren, Rod, Brad and Ryan Hilsabeck, Dennis, Steve and Diane Shepherd, and Van Gilmore; eleven great-grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren; and four step-great-great grandchildren; her only niece, Kay Rowen; and two nephews; Merle Engleka and Roy Engleka; along with many other relatives and friends

Phyllis Charlene Goecker was born April 15, 1927, at her home in Coin, Iowa to W. H. Meyers and Ruth (Mace) Meyers. Phyllis grew up in the Clarinda area graduating from Clarinda High School in 1944. She was united in marriage on April 15, 1945 to Eugene Goecker at the First United Methodist Church, Clarinda, Iowa. They were blessed with daughters, Debby and Dee Ann.
Phyllis and Gene farmed five miles northwest of Clarinda most of their married life. They moved to Clarinda in 2008. Phyllis enjoyed farm life and raising her children. In later years, her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her passion and she enjoyed being active in their lives. She was an excellent cook; will be remembered for her apple pie, chocolate cake and fried chicken. Her grandchildren's favorite was her macaroni and cheese.
Gene and Phyllis spent over twenty years wintering in Arizona where they made many friends. They also enjoyed traveling which included trips to Hawaii, Europe, and many places throughout the United States. Phyllis was definitely a people person with a great sense of humor and a streak of orneriness. She enjoyed being with her friends and family, golfing and playing a good card game. Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Clarinda for over fifty years.
Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents; infant daughter, Susan Kay; infant brother; son-in-law, Charlie VanNordstrand; granddaughter, Hallee VanNordstrand.

Good, Daniel Lee - Daniel Lee Good was born in Shenandoah, Iowa on September 11, 1956, to George Lee and Anna Belle (Richardson) Good. Daniel entered into eternal peace on Monday, October 8, 2012 in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Daniel was born and raised in Shenandoah and attended Shenandoah High and Elementary School's. On September 1, 1977 he was united in marriage to Colleen Elizabeth Greene in Rock Port, Missouri. Through the years they had lived in rural Riverton, Imogene and Shenandoah.

Daniel had worked for Eaton's Corporation for the past 11years. Before that he had worked for Henry Fields for a number of years.

Daniel was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shenandoah, he was a soldier and servant of the Lord. He enjoyed camping, boating, and being with family and friends.

Daniel was preceded in death by his; father George Good, grandparents Ray and Iva Mae Richardson and Bill and Azure Good, and brother, David Good. Those left to honor his memory include his wife Colleen Elizabeth Good of Shenandoah; sons David Terry, Matthew Lee Good, Aaron Wayne Good; grandchildren Dustin Lee Terry, Gabriel Daniel Terry, Noell Elizabeth Terry, and Jacob Samuel Terry, great-grandson, Logan Jack Terry, and mother Anna Belle Good. Funeral services for Deborah Annan Gramlich, age 57, of Gladstone, Missouri, who entered into peace Thursday, July 19, 2012 at North Kansas City Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Reverend Carl Phillips officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Polsley Cemetery, rural Yorktown, Iowa.

Deborah Ruth Gramlich was born February 24, 1955, in Kansas City, Kansas to Vernon Ross Annan and Wilma (Semmons) Annan. She was a lifelong resident of Kansas City with the exception of six years as a child in Shenandoah, Iowa . Deborah graduated from Oak Park High School, Kansas City. She continued her education and became a dental hygienist. She was united in marriage on July 27, 1973, in Kansas City, Missouri to Christopher Gramlich.

Deborah enjoyed classical music and attended Park College in Parkville, Missouri as a young girl and played the violin in the Kansas City Philharmonic now known as the Kansas City Symphony. She attended the Mid-America Photography school and managed many photographers taking sorority pictures for their colleges. Deborah also attend the University of Santa Monica and became a licensed Gemologist. She enjoyed using her artistic ability in sewing and cooking and especially enjoyed helping her special friends baking and decorating wedding cakes.

Preceding Deborah in death was her mother.

Grebert, Darlene Amelia - Memorial service for Darlene Grebert, age 91, of Clarinda will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2012 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda. Darlene Amelia Grebert, born on July 14, 1920, passed away at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, Iowa on May 30, 2012.
Darlene was born just north of Clarinda in Valley Township to Henry Frederick “Oscar” Grebert and Kathryn “Sophia” Forst Grebert. She graduated from Clarinda High School in May of 1937 and after six years of college, she graduated with a focus in special education.
Darlene’s teaching career began at Centennial Country School north of Shenandoah followed by years at Braddyville High School, McCunn, and Johnson Schools in Clarinda.
From 1947 – 1967 Darlene worked for Miss Hensley, the county superintendent of schools. She visited the country schools and led many long meetings when they were redistricting.
In 1967 Darlene began teaching at the Yorktown School where her sister, Wilma was the principal. Darlene treasured all of the children that she worked with. She touched and shaped many lives. She loved traveling, camping, and any adventure with family or friends. Her nieces and nephews loved staying at her house with her. Auntie Darlin’ always had good food on hand. She was generous, fun, and a little mischievous.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Sophia Grebert; sisters Wilma Rope and her husband Otto and Selma Forst and her husband Stanley; nephew James Forst and niece Evelyn Forst Warren.
She is survived by nieces Kathryn Callahan of Tampa, Florida and Theresa Rope Miller of Tucson, Arizona; nephews Randy Warren and his wife Connie of Waukee, Iowa and Vernon Rope of Clarinda, Iowa; great nieces and nephews Kathy Hunchberger, Richard Callahan, David May, Denise Gioffredi, Brian Callahan, Marty Whip, Jennifer McCall, Stefanie Stoner, Matthew Warren; many great grand nephews and nieces and her life-long friends.
Darlene received an award for 35 years of service to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and was acknowledged by Governor Terry Branstad for her contributions to the development of special needs children. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Clarinda and of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Darlene and her family are grateful for the loving care that she received during her years at Goldenrod Manor and through Hospice of Iowa.
Services were held Friday, June 1, 2012 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with Rev. Daryl Thompkins of St. John Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was at Clarinda Cemetery. Green, Lyle Douglas - Lyle Douglas Green, son of Roy Orsen and Mable Dorothy (Dahlgren) Green, was born on May 20, 1948 in Hamburg, Iowa. He passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 on the family farm north of Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 63 years, 7 months, 21 days.
The Green family lived on a farm north of Imogene at the time of Lyle’s birth. In 1950 the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa before moving back to Shenandoah in 1951. In 1952, they purchased the family farm north of Shenandoah where Lyle would reside the majority of his life. Lyle attended the Shenandoah Community Schools graduating with the Shenandoah High School Class of 1966.
On February 7, 1968, Lyle was drafted into the Army during Vietnam. He was stationed at Fort Louis in Washington. He received the National Defense and Sharpshooter Rifle Medals. Following his Honorable Discharge from the Army, Lyle worked for J. C. Penney’s in Shenandoah. When Penney’s closed he immediately began working for Bernie’s Gambles Store. He continued in the same position when the business was later sold and became Shenandoah Home Furnishings. Lyle worked on Main Street for over 40 years.
In 1989, Lyle moved back to the farm to care for his mother, Mable. He cared for her for over 23 years until her recent passing in October of 2011.
Preceding Lyle in death were his parents. Survivors include his two brothers, Ronald Green and his wife Kathy and Curtis Green all of Shenandoah; sister, Atoya Oliver and her husband Steve of Sac City, Iowa; 16 nieces and nephews; 17 great nieces and nephews; and innumerable friends and loved ones

 

Greenlee, Mildred Berringer - Mildred (Berringer) Greenlee was born October 25, 1916 in Clarinda, Iowa; the daughter of Vern and Lou (Jackson) Berringer. Mildred grew up in the Clarinda area and graduated from high school there. She married Charles Greenlee on July 27, 1938 and to this union were born three children: Merrill, Mariedith and Marvis.

Mildred passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Hillcrest Hospice in Bellevue, Nebraska. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Charles and brother Jack Berringer.

Surviving Mildred are her children: Merrill Greenlee and wife Barb of Seattle, Washington, Mariedith Pagel and husband Roger of Bellevue, Nebraska and Marvis Cussigh and husband John of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren: Mitchael Greenlee of Granite Falls, Washington, Darren Greenlee of Bremerton, Washington, Scott Pagel and wife Angie of Taichung, Taiwan, Shelby Bartlett and husband Lance of Bellevue, Nebraska and Shawn Pagel and wife Michele of Aurora, Colorado; 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Graveside services for Mildred (Berringer) Greenlee, 95 of Seattle, Washington formerly of Clarinda will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Clarinda Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for one hour prior to the service beginning at noon at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Gruber, Barbara Jean Kerr - Barbara Jean Gruber was born July 5, 1949 in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of David Lyman and Evelyn Elizabeth (Kofoed) Kerr. She passed away on Saturday afternoon, May 12, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society Care Center in Villisca, Iowa at the age of 62 years, 10 months and 7 days.

Barb grew up in the Red Oak area and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1967. She later attended Iowa Western Community College for two years where she received her LPN. On April 4, 1970, she was united in marriage to Randy Gruber in Red Oak, Iowa. This union was blessed with three children, Nathan, Eric and Lynae.

Barb worked as an LPN for 10 years and worked for Shenandoah Schools for three years then returned home to raise her three children. She was a member of the Norwich United Methodist Church and was active in the UMW there. She was also an avid reader. Her true love was her family, especially her children.

Survivors include her husband, Randy of Shenandoah, Iowa; her children, Nathan Gruber and his wife Anne Marie of Dubuque, Iowa, Eric Gruber of Shenandoah, Iowa, Lynae Gruber of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Kathy Selles and her husband Carl of Denver, Colorado; two brothers, David Kerr and his wife Cathy of Johnston, Iowa, Don Kerr and his wife Ginny of Urbandale, Iowa; father and mother-in-law, Carrol and Pauline Gruber of Shenandoah, Iowa; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sherry Hoffman and her husband David of Independence, Virginia, Sam Gruber and his wife Adrian of Clarinda, Iowa, Shelia Freed and her husband Mike of Essex, Iowa; along with many other relatives and friends
