Obituary, 1904

From his obituary in the Clarinda newspaper:
JAMES MADISON KELLY

James Madison Kelly passed away at his home in East Clarinda Monday afternoon, Aug. 1st aged 69 years, 6 months and 27 days. He was born Jan. 4, 1835 in Clark Co., Indiana. In 1840 he emigrated Johnson County, Indiana. On Oct. 19, 18xx he emigrated again, to Page county where he settled near Hawleyville. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Tetrick, who survives and mourns the loss of a dear, good man and kind and affectionate father. Nine children were born of this union of whom, Florence, Walter and Willie died in infancy. The six surviving children are Mrs. Clara Duncan of near New Market, Mrs. Alice McKinnon of Clarinda. Mrs. Lillie Brown of Rushville, Neb., Charley Kelly of near Clarinda, Ed Kelly of Hawleyville and Wilbur, the youngest and only unmarried member of the family resides at the home of his parents. All the children and grandchildren were present at the funeral of the father. He has been a constant and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church for thirty eight years, having united with that denomination in 1869 in Hawleyville. James M. Kelly is the eldest of four brothers - S.P. Kelly of Villiace, Ia, who was at the bedside of this brother in his last illness; T.J. Kelly of Washington, Kansas, N.D. Kelly of Bedford, Ia., and one sister, Mrs. W. J. Peterman, also of Bedford. James M. Kelly was one of those rare good men who loved his home and family, a man highly esteemed and highly spoken of by all who knew him; a conscientious Christian; an ______ husband and father, and an "A" model citizen. He has been school director in the district in which he lived for many years, and did the duty devolving on him as such director, with earnestness and ability. He became afflicted about three weeks ago with carbuncles on the back of his neck, which, in connection with diabetes, caused his death. He was often heard to eulogize his neighbors and took life as it came, always cheerful. He complained not even when suffering untold pain. In the death of James Kelly Page county has lost a pioneer citizen, and numerous relatives and friends mourn sincerely his departure. Peace to his ashes.
