Obituary

Emma Reed Johnston was born Sept 6, 1865, at Pittsburg, Pa. She answered the Master's call "come up Higher" at Shannon City, Iowa, May 23, 1919. Orphaned in early years she came to College Springs, Iowa, when 10 years of age, growing to womanhood here, uniting with the United Presbyterian church, marrying G.T. Williams Dec 13, 1891.

Five children blessed the Union and were dedicated in early life to the Covenant Johovah. They were all present in their mother's lasts sickness and tenderly bore her body to its last resting place. We all know them as Jeannette, Mrs Harry Neidigh, George, Howard, Walter and Ralph. The Mother's wish was granted in that all are members of the church and her youngest son was graduated ere her departure.

Surviving sisters are Mrs Mary Buchanan who rendered tender ministry in the closing weeks, Mrs Sarah Montgomery, Mrs Margaret Bell who was present at the funeral and Mrs Elizabeth McDonald, all of Pittsburg, Penn.

The body was brought to the church at the close of the morning service Sabbath, May 25.

The choir sang the psalms she had chosen, the pastor used her favorite chapter, John 14th, and a great company of people paid tribute to one of God's best and most loved women.

Mr William's brother, C.F. and sister, Mrs M.N. Burris of Clarinda were at her bedside, a brother, W.W., wife and daughter of Coin driving over for the funeral.--Shannan City Messenger [Shannon City, Iowa'

Emma came to live with Samuel Herron and wife - this from the 1890 Page County, Iowa history - page 477 - He [Samuel] is a native of the "Emerald Isle," born in county Down, July 3, 1821. His parents emigrated to America when he was less than two years old, and settled in the State of New York. At the end of eight years they removed to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and thence to Ohio, where the father died in 1854, aged seventy years. The mother died in Page County in the spring of 1886, aged ninety years. Samuel is the only child of the family who lived to maturity. He was united in marriage January 7, 1851, to Miss Susan Graham of Columbiana county, Ohio, a daughter of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Graham) Graham. She was born in Ireland, and when she was four years old her parents emigrated to America and settled in Columbiana County, Ohio. Her father died in 1878, aged eighty-three years, and the mother passed away in 1881, aged seventy-seven years.
