MCCORDS IN BOND COUNTY,
ILLINOIS
Truman Douglas in his unpublished autobiography
describes the McCords of Maury County, Tennessee and Bond County, Illinois
as a clan because the migrating family was so large as to merit the description.
Perhaps the clan label should begin with William McCord, the Immigrant,
settling in Derry in what was then Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in
the 1720s, but surely it reached that stage when his son John McCord sheparded
his brothers' families out of the killing fields of central Pennsylvania
into Virginia and North Carolina with individual families settling along
the way in Bedford and Washington Counties in Virginia and at least one
William remaining in the Franklin County area of Pennsylvania. The core
of the clan reached the Mecklenburg County area of North Carolina where
a nucleus remained but the area also served as the departure point for
migrations into Kentucky (David and Ann Shipley McCord), South Carolina
(James McCord, a son of William, the Immigrant), Tennessee (led by David
and James, the sons of David, the Weaver) and Georgia (the family of John
of Bedford County, Virginia). It is the Georgia migration of which the
Robert and David McCord families were a part which will then go first
to Maury County, Tennessee and then to Bond County, Illinois together
with most of their children's families, establishing Bethel Church as
the center of the McCord's settlement. A part of the clan would then
make the migration to Grant County, Wisconsin after the death of Robert,
but would never again reach the numbers or cohesiveness of the Bethel
Church group prior to 1850.
Bethel Cemetery
There stands a large monument
in the Bethel Cemetery, Section 11, T-6N, R-5W, Shoal Creek Township in
Bond County inscribed "Named in 1817 by Robert McCord, Alex Robinson
and Samuel Dixon by driving a stake and kneeling they consecrated this
spot for a Church site." (Nelda Neer Anthony. Bethel Cemetery
Bond County, Illinois. Greenville, Illinois: Bond County Genealogical
Society, 1992) Samuel Dixon had married Robert McCord's oldest daughter
in Georgia and Alex Robinson may have been the father of the Margaret
who married John McCord.
