Well, George used to go after his cows, and young Mrs. Searcy went for theirs, the pastures adjoining, and the end of it was, they ran away to California.  Pretty hard on Mrs. George, with eight kids and expecting...she nearly died.  Her father and Mr. Searcy took after the runaways, and found where they were, but George heard them coming and took out, but they got the wife and took her home.  Later George sent for his wife and kids and they all came to California, so I never saw them, but they had thirteen kids in all, so I heard.  As that was several generations ago, am not surprised there's lots of McCords out there.  Kenneth met two of the boys, older men then, in Healdsburg.  Mr. Searcy was real well-to-do, and I heard that she (the young wife) influenced him to leave his property to the grandson, which they raised, instead of to Will.

Lee's father, John Morrison McCord, married Mary Ellen Short, a school teacher.  They had nine children:  Lora, Charles, Eva Alette, Bertha, Harry Lee, Frank, Estella, Ethel and Adah.

One of Mary's (Short) sisters married a man named Coker, and had two boys, dying when the last one was born.  Coker took one boy, Oral, with him and left the baby with Mrs. McCord, Lee's mother.  Never did come for him, so they raised him.  That was Charlie Coker.

Another of Mary's sisters married a Skinner and had one boy Walter, and three girls:  Janet, Lulu and Avis, and she died.  Granville Clark took the boy, but he was pretty bad, and the last I heard of him, he was killed while with a circus in Omaha.  Janet, who couldn't walk, stayed with her grandparents, the Shorts.  She got a wheelchair, and education, and a job in a store keeping accounts.  Lulu stayed with another sister of Mrs. McCords, a Mrs. Willets, and married Art James, and had two boys called them Fred and Jake.  Avis married Fred Snodderley.  I think there was a brother of the mother too, for there were two Short boys, cousins of Lee.  Frank Short was secretary to Andrew Carnegie, and Merton, who ran for President once on some minor party ticket...was a minister too, I think.

The oldest child in the McCord family was LORA, who married Granville Clark, and I've already told of their family.  Next was CHARLES who died when small.  Next was EVA ALETTE, who was a great help to the family, as her father was sick so much.  She did sewing.  Married late in life, to Arthur Smith, who's real name was something like Sawngris, but Smiths raised him.  He wasn't much liked by the family.

BERTHA  married Marquis DeLafayette Williams.  Was called "Lafe", was real likable.  They had eight children:  Faye, Alta Fern, Perry McCord, Harry, who died when a baby, Loran (Mike), Mabel, Ralph and Pearl.  Faye married--something like Wolcott or Walcott.  Her first baby was tiny and didn't live long.  When her next one was born the Doctor seeme to ignore it, but Faye prayed so earnestly for its life and Bertha worked with it and it lived.  But maybe that was a mistake, as it was never normal, and last I knew it was in Glenwood, Iowa (institution).  Then she had Harry Lafe, who was all right, but the next time she and the baby both died.  She had T.B.

Fern married Albin Carlson and there was several children.  Virginia Russell, Viola and Paul, and maybe more.  They lived in Red Oak, Iowa and I don't know much about them.

Perry eloped with a girl, but her father had them stopped.  Later he married Roxie, who had been married before.  I heard her first man was a drunkard, and finally she tied him up in the bedclothes and took a buggy whip to him and then left.  No children.  Perry fell with the top of a windmill, and it left him a stiff leg.

Mike married Lois Irvin, had three children, Mike died of heart attack.

Lora Lee married a farmer up by Clarinda, name of Pugh, or some such...Pauline married an airman, don't recall the name.  Charles, the last I heard, was still with Lois who runs the Telephone Central in Coin, Iowa.  Mable was the next of Bertha's children.  Was such a pretty little blond.  Was Kenneth's favorite cousin when they were kids.  Married Kennard Meiers, had one girl, Theda, and one boy, Leland.  Don't know who Theda married, but Leland was in the service and married a Greek girl.

Pearl was the next, married a McGinness, had Darlene and Jimmy.  This man cooked for the railroad, and they left the children with Ralph sometimes, while she traveled around with him.  They were in Portland a while, I tried to find them, but couldn't.  Last I heard they were in Omaha, and Pearl was poorly.  Ralph was the youngest Williams.  The woman he lived with couldn't marry, as she couldn't get a divorce, so I heard.  They had three children:  Billy, Beverly and Della.  I finally saw where they were married (in the paper) and soon divorced.  I heard Billy was sent to a home for boys.  Ralph married again, and also kept Pearl's kids, but he died of heart trouble.  I heard the girls didn't llke their stepmother, and left to go to their mother, only to find she was a prostitute.  So, came back.  Too darned bad!  Don't know what they did then.  End of Bertha's.

HARRY LEE was the next McCord child.  Was the only blond baby they had.  Didn't get much schooling, didn't like grammer, so his Dad told the teacher he didn't have to take it.  Got to be a steam engineer with a thrashing machine.  Also did carpenter work.  Was a fine hand with horses.

FRANK was next.  He took to painting early and stuck with it.  Was very neat and conventional, and married Lillian Gibson.  No children.  Died of heart attack on way to church one Sunday.

ESTELLA MAUDE married Andrew Turner.  Had six children:  Marvin (Doll), Tal, Leora, Florene, Byron and Pierce.  Florene died in her teens, and I don't know where the boys are.  Think Marvin was at Fayette, Missouri.  Leora married a Todd and had several children.  Seems to me she lived in Omah or Council Bluffs.

ETHEL was just a day younger than I.  Born February 5, 1883.  Married Hollie Ecker.  They had nine children, and lost one at birth:  Orrie, Marjorie, Pearl, Thelm and Zelma (twins), Verlee, Grace and Geraldine.  Orrie married Lola May McCumber and had three boys, Larry, Gary and Kenneth.  Lary and Gary both married, but Kenny had something wrong with his back and died young.  Marjorie was next, but when they had measles, she had pneumonia and died.  Then Pearl, she married an Adkins, had one boy named Max.  Then the twins, Zelma and Thelma (they called them Jimmy and Sammy).  I think one married a Hull and one a Ray, but not sure, and think one of them had a child or two.  Next was Verlee, who married a Weland, I think.  And Grace, who married a Carlson.  These two have families, but I don't know them.  And Geraldine, married a Richardson, who was related to the Jackson's that I used to know, and they have one girl, Marlee.

Ethel's children were interestingly diverse.  Orrie was blond, Marjorie was brunette, Pearl was a redhead, and the twins blond, Verlee and Grace brunette, and Geraldine had reddish brown hair.

ADAH was the last of the McCord children, except one baby who died at birth.  Married Arthur Clark, think I told about them.

Charlie Coker, the cousin they raised, married Grace Carpenter.  They had a girl, Anna May, who was kinda odd and she married Charlie Turpin, who was just as odd.  One boy, Oral, married Ira Gate's grandaughter.

I have been told the McCords were of Scotch descent, and one characteristic that happens sometimes in the family, is that their second and third toes are slightly webbed, a little way.  Harry is the only one of our family that has this.  They used to laugh and call 'em "bogtrotters".  Don't know what nationality the Shorts were.  I remember there were other relatives named Osborne near Maryville, and Aldritghes in Elmo, but I don't know how they were related.

If you will take note, you will see that the McCord, Clark, Snodderley and Ecker families are pretty well inter-married, and maybe it's a good thing we got out of the country and got some new blood in the family.

From Federal Census for Iowa, 1850, Page County published by the Iowa Genealogical Society, 1975:  None of the McCords or Carvers or associated families are listed.

From College Springs Iowa published by the College Springs Bicen-tennial Committee, 1976:  Austin Stanton changed the course of a creek to form a pond to have a body of water for ice production.  This became Crystal Lake with Albert Arendsee's improvements.   An early pioneer, Irvin Stanton had a meat market.  His son Milo expanded the meat market into a grocery store with his son Warren under the name of Stanton and Son.  In February 1961, Warren and Winona Stanton sold the store to Robert and Rosemary Houchins.  McCords and Snodderlys were among those who had cafes in town.  Of veterans buried in Maple Hill Cemetery are listed Clifford, Franklin, Mellin and Niles Carver from the Civil War; David and Oscar McCord from the Civil War; Harry McCord from World War I; Jacob Snodderly from the Civil War; and Warren Stanton from World War I.  David Harlan McCord, Gerald's father, died age 90 in 1957.  There is a good picture of Warren and Nona Stanton.  Warren Stanton was listed in the 1976 College Springs Telephone Exchange.  There are good articles and photographs on Amity College, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches, Crystal Lake and the Business section.
