Page County, Iowa Composite Cemetery Transcriptions
by Pat Combs O'Dell: genpat@netins.net
Listings that have a bracket and place following are from the Social Security Death Index and what's in the bracket denotes where the person was "from," not where they are buried.

Butler Cemetery is in Amity Township section 1. I checked these stones 10 Oct 2004.

Cagley Cemetery [Rose Hill] is in Valley Township section 30. I checked these stones in May 1986 and have not rechecked them recently. This cemetery is officially now called "Rose Hill." In the past it was called Cagley and I have used that name because there is also a "Rose Hill" cemetery at Shenandoah.

Davis Cemetery is in East River Township, Section 18. I checked these stones June 8, 1986.

Fairview Cemetery (or sometimes called Valley Township Cemetery) is in Valley Township, section 22, Page County, Iowa. I copied this cemetery about 1980 and rechecked the stones 20 Aug 2004.

Franklin Grove Cemetery is in Pierce Township section 3. I copied stones 31 May 1986. Stones were copied west to east. Because the stones are not in definite rows, I did not number them. There was a pile of tombstone pieces in the northwest corner of the cemetery. They have reset many stones (very nicely) in new rows and I'm not sure they actually knew where the graves were. The restoration efforts were very helpful and neat.

NOTE: Jim and Ellen Houser [Jimhousersr1@aol.com] are "working" on the Franklin Grove cemetery. They have gotten about all of the headstones photographed. Some got damaged when the large tree fell last year. They do have a list of the graves there. At the time they bought their lots they were told that the original list got burned up in a house fire several years ago. Not very many graves get decorated on Memorial day and that is sad to see. Ellen says, "We did go out there today to add a bird house on Ted's grave and we see that God has decorated the cemetery with lots of bright fuchsia colored flowers. Even our two young grandsons said the flowers were pretty. The residents of Coburg, Iowa used that cemetery for many years. My husbands family moved to Coburg in 1900 and that is the Housers' that are buried there." There are probably a number of unmarked graves -- please let us know about them.

Hadden Cemetery section 18, Fremont twp, Page County, Iowa copied by Pat Combs O'Dell, 04 May 1986. This cemetery is abandoned. I found only a few stones thrown under trees. I don't think I found any stones that appeared to be on a grave.
Memory Cemetery is in East River Township, Section 12, Page County, Iowa. There are 10 sections listed. Please write to me if you need directions about where the sections are. Stones are up to date to September 2004.

Mental Health Institute Cemetery is on the southwest of the Mental Health grounds on the north edge of Clarinda. I copied some of the stones 17 Oct 2004 and took pictures of all the upright stones. Most of them are small rectangles of cement with the name and any dates shallowly etched in the homemade stones. They are difficult to read. There are many stones in this cemetery beginning about 1890 to present.
North Grove Cemetery is in Valley Township, section 25, Page County, Iowa. Stones are up to date to August 2004.
Oak Grove is in Nodaway Township, section 28. It at times has been called Rawlings Cemetery. I copied these stones 20 May 1986 and rechecked them 30 Sep 2004.
Shearer Cemetery is in Buchanan Township, Page County, Iowa. At times this cemetery will be referred to as Oak Grove and is easy to confuse with the Oak Grove/ Rawlings Cemetery east of Clarinda. Stones are up to date to September 2004.
