Gaza School |
From the Paullina Times June 30, 1988
The Gaza school filled social as well as educational needs for the community. Children attended country school until 1921, when Gaza built its consolidated school on the south end of town, During the first year the primary and intermediate grades were held in a little country school on the north end of town and grammer school was held in the church. the eighth grade and high school classes were held in the town hall. All classes moved into the new school building the next year.
The last class to graduate was in 1956. It was used as an elementary school for a few years. It torn down in 1994.
Gaza School Memories Saved
From O'Brien County Bell August 10, 1989
Years of school memories were pulled from boxes and given a special place of honor earlier this year at Gaza Producer's Co-op.
Built in 1921, the Gaza Consolidated School closed in 1961 when the district reorganized and students were transferred to three differnt school systems: Sutherland, Paullina, and Primghar. When the facilities was closed the trophy case and its contents, along with class photos, were placed in boxes and stored in the town fire station, The building was sold in 1965 to James M. Seger of Des Moines. He used it as a home and insurance office for a short time and then abandoned the building. It still stands on the south edge of Gaza, but it is vacant and in disrepair, It was going to be burned last year, but insurance problems forced as end to those plans.
Several months ago a group of local men decided that the memorabilia saved from the school should be given some kind of showcase.
"Several of the guys were sitting around one day and decided we ought to do something with those boxes of trophies and pictures," said Dave Hicks, manager of the co-op. Tom Horton, Wedell Tjosse, Hicks and a few others decided to pitch in and build the display area at the co-op.
The addition of the Gaza display has been welcomed by the community and area residents, all of whom think of the old school with fond momories.
"It's nice to preserve a little something from the school," said Hicks. "Even though the trophy case and pctures have taken away some of the store's display area. It's worth it!"
